EAGLE TO SOAR ON RICH RACEDAYBy Tom Peacock

It is not only at Gulfstream Park that history will be made this

weekend. Kenilworth=s meeting on Saturday, featuring four

consecutive Grade 1s, will be the most valuable card ever held

in South Africa.

Frankie Dettori and Stephane Pasquier have been invited to

Cape Town for the event worth R23.5-million ($1,775,000/

,1,405,000), and the former has been booked for rides in both

centrepieces.

The G1 Sun Met, newly sponsored by Sun International and

Mumm after a long relationship with J & B whisky, has doubled

in prize money and can be considered the country=s most

prestigious race. Dettori would not appear to hold the strongest

of winning chances with the Joey Ramsden-trained The

Conglomerate (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), who has not tasted victory

since last year=s Durban July. Cont. in Worldwide News p4

winners with 39 of those being siblings to Group 1 winners,

including Flying Artie (Aus) (Artie Schiller), Extreme Choice (Aus)

(Not A Single Doubt {Aus}), Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American

{Aus}), Shooting To Win (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}), Able

Friend (Aus) (Shamardal), Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}),

Preferment (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), Shamus Award (Aus) (Snitzel

winning mares including 22 out of Group 1 winners. Those

include the first foals of Samaready (Aus) (More Than Ready),

Secret Admirer (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}), Gondokoro (NZ) (Zabeel

{NZ}) and Steps In Time (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). There are

304 lots that contain black-type under the first dam.

Inglis National Bloodstock Manager Jonathan D=Arcy described

the catalogue as, Atruly world-class and representative of the

enormous investment that Australasian breeders have put into

the bloodstock industry over the past 10 years.==

AOur breeders have sourced some of the best-credentialed

young fillies and mares from North America and Europe and

bred them to the best stallions in the world,@ D=Arcy continued.

AThis will be a special year to be at Newmarket and I am very

proud that we have been entrusted by our clients with this

amazing array of top-class yearlings to offer to the market.@

The number catalogued this year is down 100 from 2016, and

D=Arcy said, AInglis has always maintained a strict selection

policy with the Easter sale and this year we have trimmed the

catalogue to showcase what we feel are 480 of the finest

yearlings to be offered in Australasia in 2017.@

Eagle To Soar On Rich Raceday cont. from p1

The Conglomerate should, however, have reasonable place

claims over this 1 1/4-mile trip.

Instead, the latest South African superstar Legal Eagle (SAf)

(Greys Inn) can confirm his superiority under Anton Marcus.

Sean Tarry=s 5-year-old has unfinished business with the Met,

finishing second to Smart Call (SAf) (Ideal World) 12 months ago.

Most recently he beat many of this field, including The

Conglomerate, to retain his title in last month=s G1 L=Ormarins

Queen=s Plate.

AHe=s a pretty laid-back horse, very honest but with a lot of

heart and great acceleration,@ said Tarry, the champion trainer.

AHe=s unbeaten over a mile and won the South African Derby as

a 3-year-old. He was beaten by a better horse on the day last

year, but he was also probably ridden too handy.@

Legal Eagle is one of numerous horses under the Mayfair

Speculators umbrella, a partnership which principally involves

leading owner-breeder Markus Jooste. It has been suggested

recently that a group could be moved to the U.S. and Legal Eagle

would be a fascinating contender for turf events culminating in

the GI Breeders= Cup Mile.

AThe owners are thinking about taking him overseas, but we=ll

see what happens here first,@ said Tarry, who also likes his other

runner French Navy (SAf) (Count Dubois {GB}).

AHe=s a fast horse and he=s got a chance, especially at the big

price he is,@ he added.

The other key player looks to be locally-based Brett Crawford,

whose pair of runners made the front page of newspapers last

week when photographed on their traditional Friday walk

through the sea at Muizenberg Beach.

Captain America (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf} was fifth in last year=s

race and has been bumping into Legal Eagle all season, but the

horse even more have been talking about is Whisky Baron (Aus)

(Manhattan Rain {Aus}), who likes the course and is seeking a

four-timer after a lower-key campaign. Kenilworth=s director,

hugely successful entrepreneur and owner-breeder Hassen

Adams, will be looking to cause a surprise with Mac De Lago

(Aus) (Encosta De Lago {Aus}).

Dettori, who is appearing as part of his role as an ambassador

for the Investec Derby at Epsom, teams up with Crawford in the

Investec-sponsored Cape Derby. His mount Edict Of Nantes

(SAf) (Count Dubois {GB} has posted a respectable series of

results but is up against hot property Horizon (SAf) (Dynasty

{SAf}).

A record-breaker in South Africa when bought for R5.2-million

($393,000/,309,700) by Andreas Jacobs=s Maine Chance Farms

at the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sales and trained by Candice

Bass-Robinson, Horizon has been showing steady improvement

and won the G3 Cartier Politician S. at this track last time.

Perhaps Dettori=s best chance of a winner will come aboard

Ramsden=s Just Sensual (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}) in the CTS Mile,

one of two richly endowed

races for graduates of Cape

Thoroughbred Sales.

She has an outside gate to

overcome but has swept to

victory the last three times,

including the G1 Cape

Guineas for fillies. In

opposition is the equally

prolific William Longsword

(SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}),

winner of the colts= Cape Guineas.

Tarry gives Dettori the leg-up for the CTS Sprint with French

Legend (SAf) (Count Dubois {GB}) but admitted, AShe=s a nice

filly but she probably has a bit to find on the ratings.@

He continued, AI don=t think there=s a bigger day in South

Africa; we=re all going there hoping to win, but you=ll need your

horses at their best even to pick up some of the money.@

Inglis Chairman=s Sale cont.

AProvocative, who won four of her eight starts as a racehorse

including the G1 Queensland Oaks, is an outstanding

opportunity for a breeder to invest in a blue chip mare at the

beginning of her stud career,@ said Newgate=s Henry Field.

ANewgate Farm are thrilled to be supporting the inaugural

Chairman=s Sale and I can see this concept growing into a really

exciting sale in years to come.@

Provocative will be offered during Session II of the Chairman=s

Sale, the Elite Breeding Prospects session, on Apr. 7.

TBA APPLIES FOR RESEARCH LEVYEdited Press Release

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia has applied for a federal

government-funded levy that will raise A$2.4-million over the

next three years for research and development projects. The

levy will be funded by mandatory breeder contributionsBstallion

owners will pay a A$10 levy per mare covered and broodmare

owners A$10 per mare returned. The money generated will be

matched by the government. The TBA will soon begin

consultation with breeders to draw up a list of priorities for

research. Topics are likely to include disease control,

reproduction and welfare.

AHaving almost $1-million to spend on research year-after-year

on breeding will be very valuable,@ said TBA President Basil

Nolan. AIt gives our industry certainty and means we can

develop research projects that will bring real benefits to all

breeders. Up until now spending on research has been sporadic

and we=ve not been able to plan as a nationwide industry.@

Organisations and individuals can also make contributions to

the levy, with those also eligible for being matched by the

government. Racing Australia, which owns the Australian Stud

Book, has already committed A$150,000.

The TBA advises any levy payer who objects to it to contact

the Department of Agriculture and list their reasons for

objection.

>GIFT= ANCHORS KARAKA MILLIONby Heather Anderson

The field for the 10th edition of the NZ$1-million Listed Karaka

Million, the co-richest race in New Zealand racing, features 14

starters and one emergency slated for the 1200-metre feature

Sunday, Jan. 29. The entrant with the most prize money is the

three-for-four Gift of Power (NZ) (Power {GB})--one of two

group winners in the field--who will break from gate two.

Favored in her first three racecourse appearances, the Graeme

and Debbie Rogerson trainee landed a Wanganui maiden Sept. 3

and doubled up

in the Listed

Wellesley S.

switched to

Trentham over

1000 metres

Oct. 22,

defeating

runner-up

Waldorf (NZ)

(Highly

Recommended

{Aus}). Making a

successful foray into group stakes company, Gift of Power won

the bob from Hasahalo (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) in Trentham=s

G2 Challenge S., with Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands {Aus})

completing the trifecta Dec. 3. The positions were reversed at

Ellerslie on New Year=s Day, with the daughter of Coolmore

shuttle stallion Power failing to repel the late rush of Hasahalo in

the G3 Eclipse S. by only a head. In the wake of that duo was

fourth-place finisher Princess Rihanna (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}),

Dijon Bleu (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}) fifth and the aforementioned

Waldorf sixth.

Leading the colts and geldings brigade, Star Treasure (NZ)

(Lonhro {Aus}), third in his career bow at Ellerslie Oct. 22,

improved to be the bridesmaid in the Listed Murdoch Newell S.

at Pukekohe Nov. 19. The Stephen McKee trainee put it all

together with a late run to graduate at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, Felton Road (NZ) (Pins {Aus}), the lone entrant to

bring a perfect record into the Million, albeit from only two

starts, looks an intriguing prospect for trainer Tony Pike. The

narrow winner of an Ellerslie 1200-metre maiden with next out

Trentham winner Padraig (NZ) (Power {GB}) third Dec. 29, the

chestnut continued his forward progress in the Countdown To

Karaka 2yo prep Jan. 14 and will leave from gate one.

Partnered in his work by James Doyle, the 6-year-old was given a

BIG WEEKEND AHEAD FOR TVG=S WEAVERby Lucas Marquardt

TVG racing analyst Dave Weaver has a busy Saturday ahead of

him. In between playing for the $800,000 first prize at the

National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas, the

42-year-old will make a quick jaunt to Miami to watch a horse

he co-owns, War Story (Northern Afleet), compete in the $12-

AI qualified [for the NHC] back in May, when I obviously had no

idea that this horse would be in a race like the Pegasus,@ said

Weaver. AI had the choice of doing one or the other, or doing

both.@

Weaver chose both. So he=ll put his entries in first thing

Arrogate sports his Breeders= Cup Classic blanket | Leslie Martin

Pegasus Preview cont.

After an abbreviated 2015 season, the Alan Sherman pupil

earned more than $8 million last season at five, with wins in the

G1 Dubai World Cup and GI Pacific Classic before falling a half-

length short of his re-opposing foe at the Breeders= Cup. Chrome

prepped for this with a 12-length laugher in the Winter

Challenge S. at Los Alamitos Dec. 17, and got the nod over

Arrogate for Horse of the Year honors announced here one

week earlier, but must overcome the dreaded 12 post with a

very short run into the first turn (For more, read The Pegasus: It

final pre-Pegasus breeze Jan. 21 at Gulfstream Park {5f, :58 4/5,

Juddmonte=s >TDN Rising Star= Arrogate, meanwhile, was

named the Longines World=s Best Racehorse Tuesday in London

off the strength of his Classic victory, and appears to be entering

Keen Ice | Leslie Martin

The lightly raced now 4-year-old took his first major class test

in Saratoga=s GI Travers S., and to say he >aced= it would be an

understatement--the $560,000 KEESEP pick-up looked like he

had been given the answers beforehand, dropping jaws en route

to a record-smashing 13 1/2-length romp that earned him a

gaudy -4 3/4 Thoro-Graph number and 122 Beyer. He silenced

any talk of the Travers being a fluke when he reeled in California

Chrome in his last racetrack appearance, good for a -5 Thoro-

Graph and 120 Beyer.

There are 10 other horses and three alternates entered in the

Pegasus, and while the top two certainly appear on paper poised

to complete a stone cold quinella, there exists at least some

possibility of a hot pace materializing.

Noble Bird (Birdstone) could be the key to the pace and

maybe the race. Brilliant on occasion, the 6-year-old Grade I

winner is most dangerous when allowed to speed off up front.

He employed those tactics when annexing Churchill=s Lukas

Classic Oct. 1 and Keeneland=s Oct. 29 GII Fayette S. by a large

margin, the latter good for a -3 1/2 on Thoro-Graph and 109 on

the Beyer scale. Unable to make a clear lead after a rough start

in the Nov. 25 GI Clark H., however, he checked in seventh

behind Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky) (second) and Shaman

Ghost (Ghostzapper) (third) and ahead of Prayer for Relief

(Jump Start) (ninth).

Shaman Ghost, who carries the colors of Pegasus visionary

Frank Stronach, upset Frosted (Tapit) in Saratoga=s GI

Woodward S. in September. Breaking Lucky was fourth, beaten

three heads that day.

Todd Pletcher, dominating Gulfstream=s championship meet

again this season as he typically does, will be represented by a

pair of entrants in the main body of the Pegasus field. Late-

running grinder Keen Ice (Curlin) ran on for third behind the big

two in the Classic, and was second off a slow pace set by

stablemate and Pegasus alternate/Poseidon H. favorite Stanford

(Malibu Moon) in this venue=s 8 1/2-panel GIII Harlan=s Holiday

S. Dec. 17. Neolithic (Harlan=s Holiday) came out of nowhere to

be second at 22-1 in the GIII Discovery S. Nov. 12, and cruised by

nine lengths in a local allowance Dec. 14.

Fans gather for California Chrome=s final race

The world=s richest horse race will take place Saturday, featuring

a beloved fan favorite, California Chrome. Michelle Miller reports

from Hallandale Beach, Florida, with the popular participant

preparing to gallop one last time.

PEGASUS REPORT: SHAMAN GHOST

SHARPENS UP ON PEGASUS EVEby Ben Massam

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - The week leading up to Saturday=s GI

Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park has followed

a similar pattern every morning with the

key contenders coming to the track on a

predictable schedule, and Friday was no

exception. 6-5 morning line favorite

California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) was out

in the early morning, 7-5 second choice

Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) exercised

toward the end of training hours at 9

a.m., and the other 10 entrants hit the

track during the intervening hours.

Stronach Stables= Shaman Ghost

(Ghostzapper) had one of the more

interesting pieces of work Friday,

concluding his gallop with a three-furlong

blowout down the backside. The 5-year-old has looked well all

week and seemed to be full of energy as he was greeted by an

outrider on the far turn. Shaman Ghost, who is stabled in the

former barn of trainer Jimmy Jerkens= father and Hall of Famer

Allen Jerkens, figures to settle off the pace and make one run

Saturday.

California Chrome had an uneventful final morning of training,

galloping a circuit of the track under the cover of darkness with

an assortment of admirers and media lining the rail once again.

The chestnut has been kept under a firm hold all week and

appears to be coming into the race in fine

condition.

Juddmonte Farms= >TDN Rising Star=

Arrogate was out on the track after the

second renovation break once again and

jogged the opposite way down the

backstretch before turning around to

gallop one easy circuit of the track.

Trainer Bob Baffert was joined by his wife,

Jill, and son, Bode--who blended in well

with the local crowd, sporting a Miami

Dolphins jersey. Having completed a

noticeably lighter workload than in

previous mornings, Arrogate made the

short walk back to Barn 15 through a large group of spectators

waiting at the gap. Among those on hand to observe Arrogate

was Brian Beach, jockey agent for California Chrome=s regular

rider Victor Espinoza. Cont. p6

Todd Pletcher | Horsephotos

While >Chrome= drawing post 12 was understandably a

concern for Beach, the agent said he is hopeful that the nine-

furlong trip of the Pegasus plays to their favor.

Ruis Racing=s War Envoy (War Front)

schooled in the gate, while Reddam Racing=s

Semper Fortis (Distorted Humor) and John

Oxley=s Noble Bird (Birdstone) had up-tempo

gallops. Perennial leading Gulfstream

conditioner Todd Pletcher=s pair of Neolithic

(Harlan=s Holiday) and Keen Ice (Curlin) also

capped off solid weeks of training with

controlled gallops.

Pletcher Pair Eyes Seaside Riches

in Poseidon While the GI Pegasus World Cup is

undoubtedly the centerpiece of Saturday=s card

at Gulfstream Park, the undercard offers an

intriguing mix of stakes action and competitive maiden races.

The $400,000 Poseidon H., carded as the fifth race of the day,

features a pair of Todd Pletcher trainees also entered as

alternates in the Pegasus. Stonestreet Stables and Coolmore

Partners= Stanford (Malibu Moon) looms as a heavy favorite and

figures to assume his typical forwardly placed running style in

the mile-and-an-eighth event. The bay recently captured the 1

1/16-mile GIII Harlan=s Holiday S. in wire-to-wire fashion Dec.

17, and will be joined in the starting gate once

again by Madefromlucky (Lookin At Lucky), who

is arguably positioned to take a major step

forward off a fourth-place finish in that race.

Madefromlucky--a two-time graded stakes

winner over nine furlongs--found himself

stymied without clear running room behind a

decidedly slow pace in the Harlan=s Holiday. Both

Pletcher entrants made a favorable impression

since arriving to Gulfstream this week.

Loooch Racing Stables and Imaginary Stables

acquired 7-year-old GSW Imperative

(Bernardini) following a sixth-place finish in the

Nov. 27 GIII Native Diver S. at Del Mar, and the

gelding has been in training with Bob Hess, Jr. at

Gulfstream in recent weeks. Imperative is one of

a handful of runners who figure to need a contested pace to fire

their best shots, along with 2016 GI Preakness S. runner-up

Cherry Wine (Paddy O=Prado) and recent restricted Sunshine

Millions Classic S. winner Hy Riverside (Macho Uno). Cont. p7

Suffused | Sarah K. Andrew

Curlin=s Approval the One to Catch in

Hurricane Bertie Happy Alter=s Curlin=s Approval (Curlin) has shown

considerable talent in her six-start career, but endured a pair of

tough beats in her most recent two starts in graded stakes

company. A gritty fourth after dueling with highly regarded Lucy

N Ethel (During) in Keeneland=s GII Raven Run S. Oct. 22, she

recently put away third place-finishing Genre (Bernardini) on the

front end before being tagged late by Eskenformoney

(Eskendereya) in the one-mile GIII Rampart S. here Dec. 17. Both

Curlin=s Approval and Genre--who has never raced at a distance

shorter than a mile--cut back to seven furlongs in Saturday=s GIII

Hurricane Bertie S. If the aforementioned duo falters, You

Bought Her (Graeme Hall) brings sharp recent form into the race

as a seven-furlong specialist.

The Long and the Short of It Pegasus Day also features four stakes races scheduled on the

turf course--two at five furlongs, and two at 12 furlongs.

If Arrogate proves successful in the

day=s main event, Juddmonte Farms

can add some icing to the cake with

3-1 morning line favorite Suffused

(GB) (Champs Elysses {GB}) in the

mile-and-a-half GIII La Prevoyante H.

Drawn widest in a field of 12 in her

first start since finishing second in

the Oct. 16 GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine, the Bill Mott trainee

must outfinish a number of talented rivals, including Arles (Fr)

(Monsun {Ger}), who finished within a length of Suffused in

Saratoga=s GIII Glens Falls S. in September. Try Your Luck (Lookin

At Lucky) could be poised to take another step forward

stretching out in distance in her second start off a three-plus

month layoff for trainer Mike Maker.

The GIII W.L. McKnight H. features a pair of previous winners

in last year=s victor Charming Kitten (Kitten=s Joy) and 8-year-old

Twilight Eclipse (Purim), who won when the race when it was

held at Calder in 2012 and 2013. Danish Dynaformer

(Dynaformer) is a two-time winner over the McKnight=s 12-

furlong trip, while Mr Maybe (Ghostzapper) returns from an

autumn layoff for the ever-dangerous Chad Brown barn.

The Ladies= Turf Sprint S. goes as the seventh race on the

Saturday card, and includes a rematch between Triple Chelsea

(Hat Trick {Jpn}) and speedy Nite Delite (War Chant), a close first

and second, respectively, in Tampa Bay=s Lightning City S. Dec.

17. The race appears to contain an ample amount of runners

with early speed--a scenario which could play into the hands of

Triple Chelsea, who closed from ninth to capture the Lightning

City.

The Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint S. for males is one of the more

intriguing races on the Pegasus undercard, mainly due to the

presence of division stalwarts Mongolian Saturday (Any Given

Saturday) and Power Alert (Alert {Arg}). Power Alert captured

Tampa=s Turf Dash S. on New Year=s Eve and owns a flawless

four-for-four record over the Gulfstream turf course.

Manhattan Dan (Big Brown) is also unbeaten in two starts over

the local lawn and makes his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher

here.

BIG WEEKEND FOR TVG=S WEAVER cont. from p1

AHopefully, I=ll be able to make the final table when I get back,@

said Weaver.

Weaver bought into the 5-year-old War Story just before last

November=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic, where he ran up the track

at 104-1.

AMy friends have owned that horse since his second start, and

I=ve always followed and rooted for him,@ said Weaver. APrior to

the Breeders= Cup, they invited me to come aboard for the ride,

and offered me a real small percentage of the horse.@

The ownership group includes Ron Paolucci, Glenn Ellis, and

Imaginary Stables. War Story has some back class to draw on. He

hit the board in each of the three Derby preps in Louisiana at

three--the GIII Lecomte S., GII Risen Star S. and GII Louisiana

Derby--before running 16th in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. A

lifetime earner of $559,395, he has come on smartly since the

Breeders= Cup. He ran a good fourth in the GI Cigar Mile, then

romped by 7 3/4 lengths in the $125,000 Queens County S. at

Aqueduct Dec. 17.

AHe=s had some success lately,@ said Weaver. AHe finished

fourth in the GI Cigar Mile, then won a nice stakes last time out

and earned his best number ever. So, he=s heading in the right

direction.@

War Story earned a 105 BRIS figure in the Queen=s County.

He=ll be making his first start for the Jorge Navarro barn in the

Pegasus, his seventh trainer since October of 2015. He made his

last three starts for trainer Mario Serey Jr.

Weaver is aware that taking on Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song)

and California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) is a mammoth-sized order,

but expects a good effort from War Story.

AHe=s been a bad gate horse throughout his career,@ he

explained. AIn the Breeders= Cup, he got left and then was rank.

In the Pacific Classic, he got left and was rank. You can=t do that

against California Chrome. But in his last two races, [jockey

Antonio] Gallardo was able to get him out of the gate well. If he

breaks clean, and we think he will, he shouldn=t be that far back,

and we think he=s going to run well.@

Weaver is making his first appearance at NHC, and is a relative

novice to the tournament scene. ABut my home track, Los

Alamitos, had a few tournaments last year, and so I entered one

and qualified.@

Anyone who=s watched Weaver man the desk at TVG knows

his affinity for the Aice-cold exacta,@ and, true to his Twitter

handle (@icecoldexacta), he punched his ticket to the NHC with

that wager.

AThere was a $200 bankroll for the tournament, which was live

money, and in the very first race on the card I put down a $190

straight exacta,@ said Weaver from the Treasure Island sports

book, where he was resplendently dressed in custom-made Ice

Cold Exacta gear. AIt hit and paid like $6.30 for a buck, so I was

able to open up a big lead and then coasted in.@

Weaver said he=s enjoying himself at the NHC so far. AIt=s been

great,@ he said. AIt=s a good group of people here. I know a lot of

people through social media, and have been able to meet a lot

of them here in person.@

Still, he can=t wait to get to Gulfstream Park for the Pegasus. AI

just want to be there and experience that atmosphere,@ he said.

AGulfstream can=t hold that many people, so you know it=s going

to be real party atmosphere.@

Should War Story run well

Saturday, Weaver hopes to bring

some of that party back to Vegas.

How the Tournament

WorksY TDN contributor Steve DeCaspers

did a terrific job reporting from the

NHC the last two years, but if you've

forgotten, here's a refresher on how

the NHC works.

Throughout the year, dozens of

NHC-affiliated tournaments are held

across the country, the winners of which earn a seat to the NHC.

In 2016, there were roughly 160 of these feeder tournaments

that comprise the NHC Tour. The racetracks, off-track parlors

and ADW sites that hold these contests are free to choose the

format in which their respective contests are held. Some use

mythical win and place bets. Others are live-money

tournaments, whereby you put up a certain amount and bet

from that pool, and whoever has the most cash at the end of the

day wins. To get to the NHC, you must qualify. You can't just buy

your way in. So these are truly the best horseplayers in the

country fighting it out.

The NHC format was tweaked a few

years ago and is now held over three days,

from Friday through Sunday. The first two

days are open, as players vie for the 66

available slots for Sunday morning's

semi-final round. There are 18 contest

races on both Friday and Saturday, so 36

combined. Eight of the races each day are

mandatory, while the other 10 are

optional, which gives players some

latitude to play the types of races they're

best at. (And while the races are optional,

the NHC determines the eligible tracks,

typically four or five major tracks.)

As mentioned, the top 66 earners move to the semi-final on

Sunday, where they wager on 10 races from 9 a.m. to roughly

12:30 p.m. (local time). Importantly, all 10 are optional races.

Also important to note is that players carry their earnings

forward, so Sunday's semi-final builds on Friday and Saturday.

From there, 10 of best handicappers in North America earn

their way to the Final Table, located on the stage of the main

Pat Nufrio | LM

ballroom at Treasure Island. There are seven mandatory races--

no optional races at all.

And that's it. The winner after the final takes home the

$800,000 first prize. Second gets $250,000, third gets $125,000.

Not insignificantly, the tournament pays down to 66, which is

awarded $5,000. (There is also a consolation tournament on

Sunday that pays $10,000 to the winner.)

In all, there is $2.44 million in available prize money at NHC.

Nufrio Lead Early at NHCY With two mandatory races to go at Friday's opener of the NHC,

retired fireman Pat Nufrio was atop the leaderboard with a

bankroll of $159.50. A resident of

Belleville, New Jersey, just outside of

Newark, Nufrio cashed on 10 of his 16

plays. It was a steady stream of singles

and doubles for Nufrio, whose biggest

hit came in the 6th at Gulfstream

when the 8-1 Zitman (Big Brown)

rallied to win a $25,000 maiden

claimer on the turf.

"There really haven't been that

many big prices today," said Nufrio. "I didn't think there would

be too many bombs, so I had the strategy that middle-line

horses were going to be good. So far, I've caught the trips and

won the photos, and I got lucky."

It's the second NHC appearance for Nufrio. He came in 2012

with his brother, but finished out of the money.

"When I came in 2012, I had the greatest time I've ever had in

Vegas, and I've been coming here for years. I had a ball. I play in

about 10 tournaments a year hoping to qualify, and I finished

third in a tournament at the Meadowlands last year, so here I

am."

UNBEATEN MCCRAKEN TO SAM F. DAVIS Unbeaten >TDN Rising Star= McCraken (Ghostzapper), who

remained perfect with a dramatic come-from-behind win in

Churchill=s GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 26, is being aimed at

Tampa=s GIII Sam F. Davis S. Feb. 11. The Whitham

Thoroughbreds homebred worked a bullet five furlongs in

1:00.45 (1/10) at Palm Meadows Jan. 25.

AEverything went well,@ trainer Ian Wilkes said of the move.

AHe was professional and relaxed, sat just behind another horse,

finished well and galloped out strong. He got everything I

wanted out of the work.@

Wilkes continued, A[McCraken] has always shown he is very

STALLIONS’ FIRST FOALStalented. He has matured a little since he last ran, and I think

he=s stronger now. He=s a nice horse who can be a little playful,

and I love being around him.@

In 2007, as the assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Carl Nafzger,

Wilkes brought GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile and subsequent GI

Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense to Tampa Bay Downs for a

victory in the (then) GIII Tampa Bay Derby.

AI don=t want a tough, tough race for him yet,@ Wilkes said. AI

want a race that will enable him to move forward right now. I=ve

had good luck at Tampa Bay Downs, so we=re planning to start

him in the Davis and see where he takes us.@

FRAC DADDY (Scat Daddy; Park Stud)

$ The MGSW sired his first foal Jan.

26, a bay filly born at Park Stud in

Mono, Ontario.

$ The filly was bred by Park Stud and

is out of the stakes-winning and

mare Itstartswithadream.

$ AThis is a great beginning for Frac Daddy, if they all look like

this, he=s going to have a bright future,@ said Mike Byrne of Park

GREENPOINTCRUSADER (c, 4, Bernardini--Ava Knowsthecode

{GSP, $156,596}, by Cryptoclearance), an impressive winner of

the 2015 GI Champagne S. at Belmont, checked in seventh as

the 7-2 favorite in champion Nyquist (Uncle Mo)=s GI Breeders=

Cup Juvenile that year. Runner-up to Mohaymen (Tapit) in the

GII Holy Bull S. just short of a year ago, the dark bay was last

seen finishing a non-

factor seventh in the

GII Louisiana Derby in

March of 2016 for

previous trainer

Dominick Schettino

and was subsequently

transferred to Todd

Pletcher. Away well

from the outside post

in this six-horse affair,

the 6-5 chalk pressed Flashy Jewel (Flashy Bull) from a close-up

second through early fractions of :24.35 and :47.58. Ranging up

outside turning for home, the $575,000 KEESEP buy swept by

the pacesetter in mid-stretch and skipped clear to a 2 3/4-length

victory. AI think the way he handled a mile today puts us in a

position to do just about anything,@ Pletcher said. AUltimately, I

think he will stretch out further, but he is also tactical enough

that I think you could consider backing him up to seven-eighths.@

A son of the very productive mare Ava Knowsthecode, the

winner is a full-brother to the undefeated Algorithms, GSW,

$301,500; and a half-brother to Justin Phillip (First Samurai),

GISW, $1,293,437; Keyed Entry (Honour and Glory), MGSW,

$322,852; Successful Mission (Successful Appeal), GSW,

$353,043; and Alex=s Allure (Sky Classic), SW. Ava Knowsthecode

is also responsible for the once-raced sophomore colt Jon

Knowsthecode (Giant=s Causeway), who was a $300,000 KEESEP

yearling, and a juvenile colt by Giant=s Causeway, who brought

$100,000 at Keeneland September. The 23-year-old mare did

not produce a foal in 2016, but was most recently bred to

Bernardini. Lifetime Record: GISW, 7-3-2-0, $470,300. Click for

Trainer Rene Araya Passes Away at 73:

Multiple graded stakes-winning trainer Rene Araya, a longtime

veteran on the New York Racing Association, died Thursday in

Florida at the age of 73.

A longtime resident of Floral Park, New York, Araya began his

career in horse racing working for Maryland-based trainers Jack

Weipert and Pedro Biones before taking out his trainer's license

in 1985. He trained throughout the Mid-Atlantic circuit and

became a regular at NYRA tracks in 1992.

Araya saddled 354 winners with career earnings of more than

$9.8 million during his 31-year career.

A native of Chile, Araya saddled former claimer

McKaymackenna to seven stakes victories, including a pair of

Grade III wins in 1993, the Beaugay H. and Noble Damsel. He

also trained Nappelon, winner of the 1995 GII Comely S., who

Araya claimed for $35,000 earlier that year, as well as stakes

winners T Storm, Textbook Method and Standswithafist.

Araya briefly retired in 2004 and worked as a jockey's agent

before returning to training the following year. He also took a

three-year hiatus from 2008-11. In 2015, he relocated his stable

to south Florida with his wife, Gloria.

"Rene was a great guy," said longtime owner Paul Pompa, Jr.,

who teamed up with Araya to win the 2002 Yaddo at Saratoga

Race Course with Textbook Method. "He was a terrific human

being. When I started [owning horses], he was my first trainer.

It's so overwhelming when you become an owner, you need to

have somebody explain everything and teach you what to do,

and Rene was so special. He basically tried his best to explain

how to run horses, raise them in class, drop them in class.

Araya is survived by his wife Gloria, daughters Carmen and

Elba and son Ricardo. Arrangements for a memorial service in

New York will be announced by the Araya family at a later date.

IT'S YOUR NICKEL (c, 3, Dialed In--Bold American, by Quiet

On Fleek (Frost Giant) when unveiled in a six-panel test on the

Belmont main track July 9 and returned a winner next out when

switched to the lawn and extended to 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga

Aug. 28. Receiving Lasix for the first time in this sophomore

bow, the 6-1 shot was squeezed in tight in the middle of a three-

horse battle for second through an opening quarter in :24.28.

Edging ahead of those rivals to sit on the leader=s outside hip

through a half in :49.07, the bay drew even with the pacesetter

on the backstretch and began to edge clear in mid-stretch, but

was run down late by Senior Investment (Discreetly Mine) to

finish a neck second. However, the winner was disqualified and

placed last after a steward=s inquiry for interference near the

five-sixteenths pole. It=s Your Nickel was promoted to first and

Society Beau (Curlin), who finished a length behind the new

winner, was moved into second. It=s Your Nickel has a juvenile

VALADORNA (f, 3, Curlin--Goldfield, by Yes It=s True) earned

when last seen Nov. 5.

Hammered down to 1-9

favoritism, the homebred was

away well from her rail draw

and caboosed the quintet

early as What What What (Archarcharch) ticked off opening

splits of :24.04 and :48.51. Still last at the top of the lane, the

bay came storming down the center of the track to swiftly inhale

the field and roll clear to a half-length success. The pacesetter

hung on for second. Valadorna=s unraced dam produced a now

2-year-old colt by Ghostzapper, who summoned $125,000 at

Keeneland September, and a yearling colt by Maclean=s Music.
