The China Horse Club, which has experienced globalsuccess with its runners this year, recently unveiled theChina Equine Cultural Festival, which will take place inInner Mongolia Sept. 20 & 21, and will feature the first-ever live Thoroughbred racing in Mainland China. Theevent is expected to attract strong internationalsupport, and is part of an ambitious plan to build theThoroughbred industry in that country. The TDN=sKelsey Riley sat down with Eden Harrington, GeneralManager of the China Horse Club, to discuss thecurrent operations and future of the China Horse Club.

KR: Can you explain why the China Horse Club wasformed, and what its main goals and objectives are?EH: The China Horse Club's goal is to become thepremier lifestyle, business and racing club in China. Toachieve this goal we not only need to provide a peerlessservice to our members--we need to make a meaningfuland lasting contribution to the industry in China. Coreto the CHC is the successful establishment of aself-sufficient Thoroughbred industry in Mainland China. That means a breeding industry, racing industry, logistics, auctions, horse feed, media, veterinaryservices, etc.--a value chain that established jurisdictionshave. To achieve these standards, the CHC haspartnered with leaders of industry in a number of fields. We are also mindful that an industry needs a lot ofskilled people, and we have set up a scholarship programthat has already seen students work in the industry inIreland and France, and in 2014 this will hopefullyexpand to Britain, Australia and beyond. As a club and service provider, we offer our membersa bespoke experience that will not only provide themwith the highest standards of service and amenities, but will also provide members with the opportunity torace both locally and internationally. This is quiteunique anywhere in the world. We have internationalstables in Australia, France, Singapore and the UnitedStates.

KR: Can you explain how the different syndicates underthe CHC umbrella are differentiated?

EH: Our syndicates are based around the countries andcities in which we have stables. We have fourinternational stables: France(Paris/Chantilly), Singapore,Australia (Sydney, Melbourneand Brisbane) and the UnitedStates (New York), and each ofthese centers has a slightlydifferent appeal for differentmembers of the CHC. We wantto provide a reason for ourmembers to go and race in citiesthat they enjoy going to, andthese cities are among the mostpopular cities for our members. We ensure they have awonderful getaway in their cityof choice and enjoy racing theirhorses while they are at it.

KR: I understand the CHC has had six winners in fourdifferent countries this year, and the club has also beenactive in sales rings around the world, including anexpense of almost A$5-million at the Inglis Easter sale. Can you describe the club's strategies for sourcinghorses?

EH: We have been delighted with the manner in whichour racing operation has begun. We have had sixindividual horses race across four countries and eachhas won at least one race. Our program is to bedisciplined and seek opportunities. We have had somegood fortune to date in determining what opportunitieswe should take and which ones we should let go. It isimportant our members enjoy racing, and winning ishard to beat. This year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale wasthe first sale in which we have bought under our ownbanner, but it certainly isn't the first sale we have beenactive at. At Easter we purchased some lovelyyearlings, including some high profile ones with ourpartners, Coolmore. We remain hopeful they can run upto their looks.

KR: How does this fit in with the club's announcedintention to import more than i100 million ofbloodstock over the next 10 years?

EH: The announcement that i100 million will be spentin the next decade is naturally exciting for theThoroughbred industry internationally. The focus of thismoney will be on breeding stock. China requires qualityfoundation mares and stallion prospects. Again, theintention is to be selective and play to our long termplan. I would expect this will open opportunities for thebreeding industry in America. There are some wonderfuloperations in the U.S. that continue to breed greatracehorses and have very successful breedingprograms.

KR: How many horses-in-training does the CHCcurrently own?

EH: Across our racing and breeding divisions we havean interest in nearly 100 individuals. It is an excitingspace to be in. Our racing team has some lovely younghorses set to race in the next 12 months as well assome promising older individuals that I think you willhear more of. Hopefully we will be able to expand ourinterests in the U.S. later this season as well. Our U.S.stable is the newest of our four stables and focuses onone mare at present called Tabreed [(GB) (Sakhee)].

Tabreed was selected atthe Arqana Sale in Decemberby our French trainer NicolasClement to race in the U.S.under the care of hisbrother, Christophe. Tabreedis a winner and is stakesplaced. She is possiblyunlucky not to have wonmore than once underChristophe's care. In timeshe will be an importantaddition to our breedingprogram.

KR: How is the CHC governed?

EH: The China Horse Club is managed by internationalstaff that have experience in a range of fields. Many ofthe senior staff were heavily involved in the highlysuccessful Meydan grandstand project. Assisting in themanagement of the China Horse Club is an eliteadvisory board. This >council of peers= are leaders ofindustry from many fields, and we are very fortunate tohave these esteemed individuals involved in our club. The makeup of this board has not yet been publiclyannounced, but that will happen very soon. KR: The CHC recently announced that it will host twodays of live racing at the China Equine Cultural Festivalin Inner Mongolia, which takes place Sept. 20 & 21.Can you describe for our readers what the China EquineCultural Festival is?

EH: The CECF is a celebration of Thoroughbred racingin Mainland China. It is also the first internationallyendorsed Thoroughbred event in this part of the world.Aside from international participation from breeders, owners, jockeys, sponsors and support from fellowJockey Clubs over a two-day festival, there will be awonderful blend of local and international dignitaries. There will also be invited speakers at an InternationalSymposium. His Excellency Professor Joseph Deiss, theformer President of the United Nations GeneralAssembly, heads a list of VIPs who will be present. Intime we hope to build the profile of this event, and itwould be wonderful to have participation fromAmerican vendors, jockeys, trainers and administrators, and possibly a guest speaker next year or in the nearfuture. The U.S. has a great deal to offer.

KR: How will the club's operations and objectiveschange when racing commences in Mainland China?

EH: Our objectives are long term and take into account2014 and beyond. Next year is the Year of the Horse, and so it will be very significant in China for the CHC.There will be some significant and very excitingannouncements on this in due course.

KR: Are there any plans for live racing dates inMainland China beyond the China Equine CulturalFestival?

EH: The CECF will be the first exhibition race the CHCis involved with, and we are honored that the HohhotSports Bureau is hosting this event. It is our intention torace more regularly in 2014 and beyond.

THE GERMAN INDUSTRY: SMALL BUT MIGHTY Liesl King has been filling you in with maximumefficiency and her usual flair for fashion about thesales, races, and other social activities last weekend inBaden-Baden, which is gaining a reputation in racingcircles as >the Deauville of Germany.= Certainly the sale, the latest edition of which was last Friday, just getsbetter and better, with more and more buyers fromoutside Germany. Seven yearlings sold for i200,000 ormore, five of which went to foreign buyers, plus twoDansili colts bought for German owners. Emmanuel deSeroux=s Narvick International (for Japan); Darley(which bought seven total through their English-basedGerman representative, Franziska Schaertlin Coffey);Angus Gold, (for Shadwell) were high on the buyerslist, along with Freddy Seitz of Brookdale Farm inKentucky, who signed for two, including an i260,000Montjeu filly. Overall, with 19 fewer yearlingscatalogued and 20 fewer sold (-12%), the grossshowed a 26% increase, and the average jumped amassive 44% to i47,983. The success of German-breds, and German families, hardly needs advertising after their exploits of the lastfew years. Danedream (Lomitas) of course burst intoprominence when scoring in the 2011 G1 Prix de l=Arcde Triomphe. She then came back to win the 2012 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, defeating Nathaniel in a good battle, and added asecond win in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, but wasprevented from defending her >Arc= title by a diseaseoutbreak and subsequent quarantine of her traininggrounds in Cologne. In what proved to be her final racein last year=s GP von Baden, she defeated Germany=sthen-two top 3-year-old colts, Pastorius (SoldierHollow) and Novellist (Monsun), who finished third andfourth. Both colts came back this year to win Group 1races in France: Pastorius won the G1 Prix Ganay, butcame back after a fruitless trip to Singapore to finishdown the field in the G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown, and isnow on the shelf with an injury. Novellist, meantime, won the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, then ran alifetime best for a second consecutive impressiveGerman win in the >King George.= Like Danedream, hefollowed up last weekend in Sunday=s edition of the G1Grosser Preis von Baden as his Arc prep, and is nowgeneral co-favorite, along with the Fabre-trained likelyG2 Prix Niel-bound Flintshire (Dansili), or secondfavorite. It=s a pretty impressive roll of honor over thelast 24 months. But the German racing brand has a problem, and, unusually, the problem is not quality, but quantity. There aren=t enough of them. German foal cropnumbers are in decline--down a third since 2008, andnot really because of the Meltdown. Cont. p8

Costs, as everywhere, are high, and returns on theGerman racetracks are low. Smaller breeders have beengetting out, and even the big owner-breeders who arethe backbone of the German industry have been cuttingback as the risk-return ratios haveworsened. Until last Friday=s salethose breeders who could beidentified as >commercial= wereworking against revenues averagingin the i30,000 range at theirflagship sale. The only way Germanowner-breeders have been able tomake it pay is by selling their beststock as it develops. Markets asdiverse as Australia, Japan and America, as well as themajor European operations, are keen to buyGerman-breds. With a collective foal crop which wassmall enough to start with and has been shrinking, thetop German breeders can see that it won=t take long tokill the goose that laid the golden egg--especially whenthey sell the good fillies from those top Germanfamilies. If they need to see any examples of what happenswhen a country sells off their top pedigrees, they needonly look at what=s happened in America. For over 30years American breeders have been selling to theMaktoums, to the Japanese (especially during themarket crash of the late 1980s and after 2008), and toanybody else prepared to compete at that level, spending big money for the best available stock. Nowinternational buyers stay away from the American salesin droves, because they don=t know the sires and don=tunderstand the pedigrees. They say it=s because ofdrugs, but that=s actually a secondary issue, and aconvenient excuse. The real reason is because, on thewhole, they don=t understand the pedigrees any more, and they don=t need to try and understand them, because the sires in Europe are so good. It=s probably amistake, because American-breds in Europe punch wellabove their weight in terms of numbers, but it doesn=tmatter as much to European buyers when you see thereare 47 yearlings by Galileo in Tattersalls= October SaleBook 1.Cont. p9

“In 2008, Doncaster’s Premier Yearling Sale saw 401 horses sell for just under £13.5-million and an average of £33,650. Now, five years later, the totals are back in that neighborhood: in last week’s sale, 410 yearlings grossed just over £13.3-million and averaged £32,441, with a monumental 86% clearance rate from the catalogue. The gross was up 25% from last year, and is within 1.5% of the 2008 total; the average was up 21% from last year, and is within 4% of 2008’s. Massive sale last week in Germany, too.” – Bill Oppenheim

One thing about being smaller to start with is it canbe easier to reverse the trend of declining numbers--alittle bit can go a long way--and there are several movesafoot in Germany, both short- and long-term, whichcould result in the creation of more German-breds, bothfrom the old, established families, and from new oneswhich could be developed if there were more breederswith commercially justifiable reasons to invest. I can=temphasize enough how different a program it is tocreate quantity from quality than to try and createquality from quantity. They have a real basis on whichto grow. Maybe there are only eight or 10 majorbreeders in Germany, but the traditions of theirinvolvement routinely go back three to five generationsin their families--that=s the human families as well asthe horses. There are good indications that this centralcorps of top breeders realize that only by joiningtogether to reinforce existing structures, and creatingnew ones can they lay the groundwork for the >Made inGermany= racing brand to grow and expand. It=s anironic twist that they already have all the internationalrecognition and demand they need. It is their domesticmarket which is in desperate need of development. They need more domestic racehorse owners, to createdomestic demand so that breeders can justify expandingtheir numbers. It=s a big project in a country with a greatequestrian tradition, but little recognition of horse racingby the vast majority of the German public. Cont. p10

But German breeders have the raw material to buildfrom, and if the big owner-breeders--because it actually does all dependon them--can muster the politicalwill, and find the time and the peopleto help implement the plans whichmust be drawn up and financed--there is a chance they can reversethe decline in the foal crop, andenhance the chances of theGerman-bred horse racing brand tofirst, sustain itself, and, second, grow.

The Thoroughbred of the Year Award is given to aThoroughbred that has been successful in a non-competitive career. AThrough Rascal=sgenerous heart and instinct to serve, children withautism and Down Syndrome have said their first words.Adults with multiple sclerosis and children withneurological disorders have improved balance andgained strength.
