Save the date: MSBA Summer Seminar will focus on equity

The 2016 MSBA Summer Seminar — “Framing the Equity Conversation” — is slated for Monday, August 8, at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park.

WHY should you attend the Summer Seminar? The Summer Seminar will help you start the next school year informed and inspired. Meet new people and share ideas. Learn about key education issues. Demonstrate your commitment to lifelong learning. Hear what’s happening in Minnesota schools. Be the best board member you can be.

Also, an Early Bird Session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, August 7, and a Phase I-Phase II Combination Workshop is set for Tuesday, August 9.

Program information and registration will be coming later this spring.

MSBA Insurance Trust endorses Marsh & McLennan for property, casualty and workers’ compensation insurance

The Minnesota School Boards Association Insurance Trust (MSBAIT) announced April 20 that, effective July 1, 2016, it will be endorsing Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC (MMA) for property, casualty and workers’ compensation insurance and risk management products and services for eligible Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) members.

“MSBAIT is excited to endorse MMA,” said Kirk Schneidawind, Executive Director of MSBA and Secretary of MSBAIT. “MMA brings incredible experience with school risks, exceptional relationships with insurers, and tremendous local resources ... all of which will help us deliver a fabulous risk protection program for our Minnesota public school members.”

The MSBAIT Risk Protection Program, developed with MMA and supported by multiple property, casualty, and workers’ compensation insurers, will be available to eligible Minnesota public school districts who are current members of the MSBA. The MSBAIT Program will be available directly through MMA, as well as to other local, qualified, school-selected insurance agents through MMA.

Series of Every Student Succeeds Act Topic Area Meetings conclude in May

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Topic Area Meetings hosted by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) will wrap up this month. The purpose of the meetings is to share and clarify the ESSA law and to collect important stakeholder feedback that will inform future workgroups. Given that final guidance from the U.S. Department of Education is not expected until October, MDE does not expect to reach consensus during these meetings, nor to produce final recommendations for implementation. However, the input gathered from these meetings will have a significant impact on shaping Minnesota’s new system.

MSBA encourages its members to attend these meetings. All meetings will be held at the MDE office in Roseville in Conference Center B (Room 15 or Room 16). For directions to the MDE office, please visit https://education.state.mn.us/MDE/Welcome/Direc. See the remaining schedule and topics below or visit http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/SchSup/ESSA/MDE035276.

Two Minnesota schools recognized as 2016 Green Ribbon SchoolsOn April 22, U.S. Secretary of Education John King announced the 2016 Green Ribbon Schools. These

awards honor schools across the nation that are leading the way in reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring high-quality environmental education programming that prepares students with the skills and sustainability concepts they need in the growing global economy. Among the 2016 honorees are two public schools and one college from Minnesota. Those schools are:

■ Glendale Elementary School (Prior Lake-Savage Area School District)■ Henry Sibley High School (West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area School District)■ Macalester College, St. Paul

In total, 47 schools, 15 districts, and 11 postsecondary institutions throughout the U.S. were honored. The list of all selected schools, districts, colleges and universities, as well as their nomination packages, can be found on the U.S. Department of Education website. A report with highlights on the 73 honorees is also available. Visit https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MNMDE/bulletins/144f3c4 to view the complete press release from the Minnesota Department of Education.

U.S. Department of Education has free school climate tool for school districtsThe U.S. Department of Education (ED) is dedicated to helping keep students safe and improving their

learning environments. In particular, ED developed the new, high-quality, adaptable ED School Climate Surveys (EDSCLS) and associated web-based platform that allows states, local districts, and schools to collect and act on reliable, nationally validated school climate data in real-time. The EDSCLS builds on two initiatives: President Obama’s Now is the Time Plan and his My Brother’s Keeper Taskforce, which recommended that the Department work on the issue of school climate.
