Dear Parents and Community Members,

Welcome back to all students and families after the Easter holiday break. I trust that everyone is well rested and ready for a busy term full of academic and sporting activities.

Throughout the holidays there were a number of highlights that students, staff and families were involved with:

ANZAC Day Congratulations to all students who marched with the school and represented our school so proudly on ANZAC Day at services. It was impressive to see the number of students attending the dawn service with families. Please enjoy some of the photo highlights courtesy of school staff and NVI later in this welcome back newsletter. A big thank you to all who proudly represented Gunnedah South throughout the day.

Show Success It was very pleasing to see a huge number of entries from our students and staff at the Gunnedah Show this year. A clear highlight was the successful student entries from our school kitchen and farm. Super effort 5L, 5/6M, 6T and congratulations to all students for their highly successful entries.

School Uniform—Transition Period With the fluctuations we are currently experiencing in the weather that this time of year typically brings, we kindly ask parents to make the personal judgement each morning on which uniform their child wears to school for the first two weeks of this term. This can be either summer or winter uniform.

Don’t forget to check tags on uniforms (especially jumpers and jackets) that names are clear marked so they are less likely to be misplaced.

Please remember that our school stocks a large range of quality winter uniforms.

NAPLAN In week 3 of this term, students in years 3 and 5 will sit National testing at school (NAPLAN). This testing is invaluable as it allows teachers to identify further areas where we can assist students to improve with their learning at school. It also gives parents a very good opportunity to see the academic growth their children are having at school.

Building Maintenance and Upgrades Throughout the holidays a great deal of maintenance work and construction has occurred in our school with some works still to occur. The majority of the work yet to be completed has been organised to occur over several weekends throughout Term 2, to minimise interruptions to our school and classes.

The long term impact of the works for students, staff, parents and visitors will hopefully be positive and ensure our school feels vibrant and positive for our students who are our core business.

There are some very noticeable changes, particularly in our outside primary area, Kindergarten classrooms and school administration area. Today many of our Kindergarten students were treated to fun new carpet designs in their classrooms.

New Teacher This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Miss Meg Foster to our teaching team at Gunnedah South Public School. Miss Foster is very excited to be working at Gunnedah South and I encourage you to make her feel welcome to the South School family. Don’t forget next week is Teacher Appreciation Week (5th to 11th May).

Finally, I would like to extend my appreciation to all who assisted with the 4-day P&C show clean up over the last weekend. The P&C has allocated monies raised from this event to contribute to a new learning centre for our students which will begin construction shortly.

Looking forward to a terrific term 2!

Kindest Regards,

Pete Baum (Aka Mr B)

Yarn Up

with Kallie &

Tyler …

Do you know the difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country?

A Welcome to Country is delivered by Traditional Owners, usually an elder who are welcoming visitors to their Country.

An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the

continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

Last term two amazing students in Year 1 presented their

Acknowledgement of

Country at the

Easter concert. We are so proud that our

infants students are showing confidence

and sharing their

learning with us.

Well done Kallie and Tyler!
