Dear Parents and Carers

Happy Education Week! The 2019 theme for Education Week is ‘Every student, every voice’.

Each week at Gunnedah South we encourage student empowerment, agency and ownership of education and this theme certainly reflects our efforts to ensure students have access to high quality learning experiences. To support this, our teachers include learning goals and success criteria in every lesson they deliver to your child/ren. Put simply students are provided with a roadmap for success.

At Gunnedah South, my team work hard to ensure every student is known, valued and cared for and I believe my staff do this well. Ultimately we all want the same thing, we want successful students who thrive beyond the school gates.

Today we celebrated achievements of public education in our area at the Namoi Partners Schools combined Education Week Awards. The combined choir was amazing. It certainly was positive to see three highly deserving individuals from our school highlighted for their efforts, value and dedication to education at South. The recipients where:

Student Award: Charlotte Semmler

Staff Member Award: Debbie Fleming

Community Member Award: Melinda McCulloch

While it is not possible to highlight every student, staff member, parent or community member at this award ceremony, I would like to say thank you to all who contribute to our school!

School Athletics Carnival Students were treated to an amazing day of sporting success at our carnival. One of the clear highlights for me, was observing the continuous encouragement for individual students to succeed from peers, parents and community members. The change in venue was well received and I would like to thank all involved in supporting the day. I especially would like to thank Mrs Tydd and her amazing team of volunteers and our mobile barista who all ensured everyone was well feed. I would also like to highlight Miss Karen Willcocks for her amazing organisation and efforts to ensure the day ran smoothly. Also a special mention to Miss Gabriel Reynolds and Miss Claire Tudgey who co-ordinated K-2. Finally, thank you to everyone who helped out on the day to ensure the smooth running of the carnival. Like with everything we do at South, we value feedback. Please do not hesitate to provide feedback directly to me in person or through the Skoolbag App.

School Photos: Monday 12th to Thursday 15th of August

Montage Fotos are again taking our school photos this year. The orders are due back by Friday 9th August.

If you misplaced your photo order form please call into the front office to claim one.

The wonderful benefit of utlising the local team at Montage is they have kindly offered for parents to contact them directly to arrange alternative sibling times for individual and family photos for those who may be away on the scheduled days. Please drop into the shop or contact them on 6742 6616 to arrange an alternative times.

School Communication: How are we doing as a school community and how can we improve it?

At Gunnedah South Public School, my staff and I consistently work hard to communicate with parents / carers and community members through a variety of mediums. The reason we do this is to ensure everyone is kept up to date and informed of the incredible array of learning opportunities, activities, experiences and happenings that occur in our school each week for our students.

The ways we communicate are:

Our outwards communication sources are:

In person Telephone School Newsletter (available on our webpage,

app and Facebook page) Notes (uploaded onto App) Skoolbag App School Facebook Page Email (this is linked through Skoolbag App) Letters Text messages for attendance P&C Meetings

Our inwards communication sources are:

In person Telephone Email through our school account Skoolbag App – look under eforms and you can

contact all staff directly Notes Letters Response text messages for attendance P&C Meetings

Amazingly, numerous staff members take the time to write newsletter articles, notes, create flyers and even send items through the post on our Facebook Page and Skoolbag App. I personally would like to take this opportunity to thank all who make this effort in an attempt to keep everyone informed.

At this point I would like to say thank you to the parents / carers and community members who are still reading, as I often wonder if anyone reads what is written in the newsletter. If you have made it this far, please make the effort to catch me at school over the next week and you might discover a bonus.

It is timely that parents and community members are reminded about our schools social media rules of engagement and the parent code of conduct. These are available on our Facebook page and school website.

In joining our community on Facebook, Gunnedah South Public School follows the Department of Education Code of Conduct and Facebook Terms and Conditions. Please ensure you take the time to read these ‘Rules of Engagement’ at the top of the Facebook page. Our page is monitored closely and we thank parents for not sharing our logo, publications or student or staff names or pictures on any other social media page.

I kindly ask parents and community members before having a spray on social media, why not model to your children, our students the value of communicating directly with the source.

Chances are you might actually help us to communicate better .

P&C Meeting – Notice of discussion with Gunnedah South P&C regarding revision of School Zone

At our next P&C meeting I have been asked by our School Director Mr Mark Young to share the following proposed changes to school intake areas for Gunnedah South as provided to him by Brad Pollard, Graduate Asset Planner, Planning and Strategy.

I have been advised that it is for me and the school P&C to review. As this is the first direct consultation with the Gunnedah South School Community in relation to school zones, all feedback and opinions are welcome.

I strongly encourage you to attend this meeting on Tuesday 13th August at 7pm (even if you are not a P&C member) if you would like to share your viewpoint.

As always you are welcome to come along and express your opinion in relation to zoning, with the knowledge all feedback will be forwarded back.

If you are unable to attend this meeting and would like to share your opinion, please do not hesitate to contact me at school or through the school email address or Skoolbag app.

New Communication opportunity

Would you like us to start a weekly Coffee and Chat / Yarn Up?

We do listen and after reviewing the very limited number of parent surveys from 2018, we have been following up directly with parents and community members to get views and opinions. If you would you like an open invitation to have an informal chat with Miss Leonie and Mr B over a cuppa, then please let us know if you think this idea would be helpful?

Kindergarten Transition

Last Friday, we welcomed our 2020 Kindergarten Transition group. This was the first day of our Kindergarten Transition program and we will be expanding to four classes for transition next Friday.

Our Kindergarten Transition program is always lots of fun and I encourage parents to support their children in attending this quality program. Last week we welcomed 61 of our 2020 Kindergarten students to our transition program. The enthusiasm and excitement of transition is always a very special time in our school and I look forward to getting to know each and every transition student over the program.

In Terms 3 and 4, we will be providing a number of opportunities for children to be supported in our Kindergarten Transition Program.

Reminder: Our 2020 ‐ Transition Packs are available from our school office. Mrs McGowan our Kindergarten Transition Coordinator has dropped some packs at local preschools to support people who can’t make it to our school office during the opening hours.

Please remember it is not too late, we are still taking all enrolments for 2020.

Yarn Up

With 6T

Yaama! During NAIDOC week the students from 6T were able to experience lots of different culturally significant learning experiences. They were involved in an excursion by Year 6 to Coonabarabran sandstone caves where students read and viewed the history of the area and also learned aboutthe significance of the site and it’s stories. Students began to understand the significance of the history that comes from our local area, viewing artefacts that are over 40, 000 years old. 6T created stories using a variety of Aboriginal symbols, using animal tracks, waterholes and more to tell a variety of stories. Students studied the meaning of “Voice, Treaty, Truth” discussing the importance of cherishing our amazing history. 6T worked with our KM buddies to create artworks that show ‘the way we grow in our education together’, creating discussions between students to share their learning together.

A 6T member, (Riley Price) was one of the deadly hosts of the NAIDOC week closing ceremony, doing a magnificent job running the show and assisting teachers/ staff with smooth transitions and flow of the performances.

Mackenzie Keeler is also a member of 6T and was the recipient of the Ethan Stevens award, this award highlights students who show a dedication to their schooling, sport and culture. Timothy Marshall-Thorning was awarded the racial harmony award for year 6, proudly representing 6T.

6F show they are respectful by using active listening skills, being cooperative, using manners when talking to others

and being reflective of our actions towards others.

Stage 2 Excursion

On Wednesday 24th July Year three and four went on their NAIDOC Week

excursion to Mullibah Lagoon. We left after recess and arrived at the lagoon.

When we got off the bus Mrs Craig entertained us on our walk to where we

were leaving our bags, we zigged and zagged in a snake (dhuru) in and out of

trees. While we waited for the final bus to arrive we played a game of Simon

Says.

We then were able to participate in many activities, including a native scavenger

hunt, storytelling about the Red Chief, Indigenous games and Indigenous art or

tiles. We were all having so much fun and were thoroughly engaged that we

didn’t all get to complete all the activities.

Thank you to Miss West for planning such as engaging and hands on excursion

for us.
