CELEBRATING DIVERSITY HARMONY DAY 2018

On Wednesday, March 21 Gunnedah High School cele-brated Harmony Day.

Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange to show their support for cultural diversity.

A morning tea was held for staff, with many sharing food from their heritage/culture.

Harmony Day is a day to cel-ebrate Australian multicultur-alism, based on the successful

integration of migrants into our community.

It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic back-ground, united by a set of core Australian values.

Harmony Day occurs on March 21 each year and coin-cides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimi-nation of Racial Discrimination.

The region’s Lions Club members were treated to a memorable perfor-mance from Gunnedah’s Haylee Mur-rell at the Lions Club regional Youth of the Year finals.

Competitors from across the region gathered at Wee Waa to battle it out for a spot in next month’s district youth of the year finals in Gunnedah.

After claiming the Gunnedah Lions Youth of the Year in November last year, Haylee put on another strong showing to finish runner-up in the highly competitive finals.

The Gunnedah High School student told The Namoi Valley Independent she was pleased with her performance.

“My impromptu speaking didn’t go so well in the first round (in November) so I was a bit surprised to win,” Ms Murrell said.

“But I was really happy with how I went at regionals, really happy.”

Ms Murrell gave a speech at the competition about women in agricul-ture, a topic very close to her heart.

“I spoke again about agriculture because that is absolutly what I love,” she said.

“More specifically the speech focused on women in agriculture and what has changed and what is chang-ing within the industry at the moment.”

Gunnedah Lions Club president Nev Adams said Haylee should be proud of her performance throughout the competition.

“Her entry form for the Gunnedah competition was a classic,” Mr Adams said.

“It was a little disappointing Haylee didn’t get the nod at regionals but us as a club, as well as her school and family are extremely proud of her efforts.”

The Gunnedah teenager is encour-aging all interested students to get involved in the next youth of the year competition.

“It’s a great way to get more involved with the community, work on public speaking, practice your interview skills for jobs later on, even if you don’t get through it’s a beneficial experience,” she said.

“It’s such a good experience and Nev and Robin are inspirational people and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Haylee claims runner up in Lions Club Youth of the Year regional finals

Students are complet-ing the Tell Them From Me surveys this week.

The survey is a chance for students to give their opinions on things that matter at Gunnedah High and it will help teachers and the Princi-pal identify changes that can improve our school

It is confidential and voluntary.

The Girls Academy at Gunneah High School will benefit from a new partner-ship with Bis.

Girls Academy was established at the school in 2017 and provides in-school programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.

Bis chief executive officer Brad Rogers said the company was proud to partner with the academy, which “helps thou-sands of Aboriginal girls overcome some of the common barriers, which keep them from attending school”.

“At Bis, we foster an inclusive culture which embraces difference,” he said.

“We also provide a range of oppor-tunities in our business for women and Indigenous Australians to build a career in the mining industry.”

Girls Academy chief executive officer Ricky Grace said private sector support was vital to the organisation’s efforts to close the gap in education outcomes.

“Our aspirational funding model includes one-third from the business community and partners like Bis are vital to the work we do,” he said.

“We have grown significantly in recent years and now work with more than 2,500 students across Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the North-ern Territory – but there is still much work to be done.

“The Girls Academy encourages the girls to see they are somebody important and capable who can help themselves and help others as well. When these girls believe in themselves, they can achieve

anything – and they will be the commu-nity leaders of the future.”

Bis’ Arron Johnson visited Gunnedah High School on Tuesday to meet Girls Academy’s Kylie Milsom and Blanche Biles and some of the students.

“Bis believes in empowering our local workforce through community engage-ment activities and we are glad to have the opportunity to support this powerful initiative in Gunnedah,” he said.

Ms Biles and Ms Milsom said they were grateful to Bis for supporting the pro-gram, which focuses on school attend-ance, academic performance, health and well-being, post-school planning, and cultural connection.

Parents and senior students are invited to attend an information evening hosted by special guests providing important insight about the university admissions process and the future world of work.

PART 1: UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS PROCESSThe University Admissions Centre will be hosting an information session on how to apply for university, key dates and critical information for students and parents leading in to senior years.

PART 2: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE WORLD OF WORKKirsty Mitchell, Director of the Career Development Centre at Bond University will be providing important insight on the changing careers landscape and how students can prepare for the changing world of work. Reality is careers are rapidly changing, with young people needing a different set of skills to thrive in a technology rich, competitive job market. A job for life is no longer the norm and individuals will most likely change jobs, even careers, several times over their working life. The key question is how do we prepare students for this changing landscape?

THE ART OF FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

Year 10 Food Technology stu-dents are currently studying a unit that investigates the secrets of food photography.

Armed with enthusiasm and their knowledge of photography tricks and

current food trends, students had to make a Chicken Pie and photo-graph the item in a styled setting that would be appropriate for a food magazine cover.

Delicious!

The last month for Zoe Fleming has been, in a word, busy.

The Gunnedah High School student has played in three separate carnivals in the past month, representing a range of teams.

The hectic period culminated last week with Fleming playing for the NSW CHS Second XI side at the NSW Schoolgirl Championships in Bathurst.

The Year 11 student played alongside fellow North West players Lara Graham and Deni Baker for the NSW side as they claimed one win and three losses at the championships.

“We went pretty good, I think we’re stronger as a batting side,” Fleming said.

“We batted alright against [similarly skilled teams] but struggled against our [NSW] first team.”

Fleming was only required to bat once at the carnival but said she still managed to learn a lot about game awareness and choosing the right times to play big shots.

“I think I ended up with 13 but I stayed out there for a while which was the plan because we were sort of falling in a hole,” Fleming said.

Fleming, Baker and Graham were selected in the NSW Second XI side after performing well for North West the week before the NSW Schoolgirl Champion-ships.

But before that carnival, Fleming was helping NSW claim an 11th consecutive

National Indigenous Cricket Champi-onships (NICC) at Traeger Park in Alice Springs.

The NSW side scored a big nine-wicket victory in the final against Queensland.

NSW flew past Queensland’s total of 6-135 in just 12.5 overs.

GUNNEDAH HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parents/Caregivers,ANNUAL GOLF DAYWe have just had our annual Golf Day. Thank you to the Gunnedah community for turning up in larger numbers to sup-port the day. Also thanks to Head Teacher PDHPE Adam Mooney, the Communities Team and P&C for all the work they did in organising what was a very well run, successful and enjoyable day. Again, best steak sandwiches ever.

YEAR 7 ADVISOR 2019Congratulations to Miss Tash Constable from the Science faculty who has been successful in applying for the position of Year 7 Year Advisor for 2019. We will have

our transition night, which was a major success last year, early in Term 2. The date will be posted on our Facebook page shortly.

SRC TRAINING DAYJenny Sullivan SRC co-coordinator and DP Bec Maybury held an SRC training day which is part of overhauling our stu-dent leadership structure. The students involved had some very positive ideas for school improvement.

FAST FOOD NOT WELCOMELastly I have made this request previous-ly. We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs Gai Bowen as our canteen manager and the food and service provided by the canteen is the best I have ever encoun-
