TRONTHEATRE

THE THEATRE HAD JUST GONE THROUGH TWOyears of change with two leaders of the theatre comingand then going after a short period so there was theneed for some sense of stability and consolidationcoupled with a clear focus as to what we should beachieving artistically. It was important to me that the Tronshould set out its stall with the Glasgow and Scottishtheatre environment with clarity and a sense of vision and purpose.

I arrived here with a commitment to increase the range and output of our own Tron Theatre Companyproductions, to address the needs of the Glasgow theatregoing community by providing an exciting and diverseprogramme, and to turn the building into a thriving andenergetic theatrical powerhouse and key resource for the arts in Scotland. In my view, Glasgow has the besttheatre audiences in the UK coupled with the bestcollection of theatre artists and those two factors provide us with a wonderful opportunity.

We immediately started rehearsals for what was to bethe first of my Tron Theatre productions, Michael Healey’samazing play, The Drawer Boy. During the same first weekswe addressed the issue of maximising space within thebuilding. The box office was moved back into the frontfoyer area and its previous location converted into aspace called ‘The Education Suite’ and given over for

rehearsals, workshops, and classes. This move freed upour studio space, the Changing House, to be moreregularly used for performances, particularly from visitingcompanies. Programming of occasional events – cabaret, music, and theatre – started to be developed in theVictorian Bar to complement the productions running inthe other two performance spaces.

Within this report are images and details of what wehave produced during the 2008 / 09 season. It is still earlydays but we have set about the task very quickly and theresults are already there to see... an increased number ofin-house shows, a significantly increased number ofperformances throughout the building, and anacknowledgement in Glasgow and across Scotland thatthings are happening at the Tron with an energy anddynamism that this wonderful theatre is well capable ofand which people in Glasgow deserve.

Any theatre is only as good as the people who work in itand none of what we do at the Tron would be half asgood without the hard work, energy and commitment ofthe Tron staff. I give thanks to them all. I would also liketo thank the Board of Directors who are very supportiveof what we are doing and I also give thanks to all thoseorganisations and individuals who contribute financially tothe work of the Tron – principally of course Glasgow CityCouncil, and Scottish Arts Council.

WE WERE DELIGHTED THAT BOTH STV AND ROYALMail Group came back on board for a fifth year of sponsorshipof the Tron’s panto – Mother Bruce. STV returned as MediaPartner providing a television advertising campaign andRoyal Mail continued to provide the schools activity packsassociated with the panto to take workshops out toclassrooms in advance of the production.

Belhaven Brewery Limited have enhanced their support byjoining us as a Corporate Partner in addition to theircommitment to annually sponosring the season brochuresfor a fourth year and we are delighted that we have developeda new relationship with Inver House Distillers and theirbrand AnCnoc.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTAgainst the backdrop of a difficulteconomic climate the Tron has managedto maintain relationships with all of itsexisting Corporate supporters during2008/2009 and indeed attracted anumber of new partnerships duringthe year in question.

AnCnoc are now the official ticket sponsor for the Tron andwill also be sponsoring all opening night receptions for TronTheatre Company Productions. This is complemented by anew sponsorship relationship with Oddbins who will besupporting Exhibition launches in the Long Gallery.

Other new Corporate Partners include Danwood Scotlandwho have committed to the Tron for the next three years;Reid Printers, Alba Facilities,Walton and Parkinson and wehave also managed to secure in-kind support fromWag Designand Fraser Suites.

During 2008/2009 we also managed to encourage a numberof our original patrons, who had not renewed theirmembership in the previous year, to rejoin the scheme. It isour intention to relaunch the scheme in April 2009 and thispositive response has provided us with a really solid basis fromwhich to do that.

In the current financial climate it is becoming more andmore difficult for arts organisations to secure large-scale cashsponsorships. With this in mind it is our intention over thenext three years to focus our attention on ways of increasingalternative income streams including individual support andall recent research in this area supports this move. To thatend we have recently launched a donations campaign aimedat attracting a £1 donation from all ticket buyers and this willbe monitored throughout the next twelve months. Initialresponse to this campaign has been encouraging.

Support from Charitable Trusts and Foundations continuedto grow and has helped to support a wide range ofEducation and Outreach activities throughout the year, enabling us to reach as wide a range of people as possible.
