PORTRAIT GALLERY

Washington, D.C.

Cost: $35 pp Reservations Open: December 19

We are offering a one-day bonanza with three exhibits for the price of one. Our destination is the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum located in a building that covers four blocks. There are three exhibits that are a must see. The first exhibit is ―The Sweat of Their Face‖ that combines art and social history with representations of American laborers across genres and centuries of art. Artists such as Winslow Homer, Dorothea Lange, Elizabeth Catlett and Lewis Hine depict laborers throughout the changing landscape of America; from child and slave laborers to miners, railway and steel workers, to the modern gradual disappearance of the worker. Approximately 75 objects in all media (including video) highlight a point of connection between the artists and their predominately anonymous subjects. The second exhibit is titled Recent Acquisitions: From Francis Scott Key, Madeleine Albright, Gertrude Jeannette and Dr. Norman Francis to Harry Callahan, Rita Moreno and Dustin Lance Black, this annual exhibition features 27 objects that tell the story of America through the art of portraiture and showcase some of the newest additions to the museum‘s collection. The third exhibit is entitled ―Portraits of the World.‖ ―Switzerland‖ is the inaugural exhibition of a series that will highlight the global context of American portraiture. Each year, the National Portrait Gallery will showcase a portrait created by an international artist affiliated with the lending country. The featured work for 2017-18 is Femme en Extase, a portrait of the Italian dancer Giulia Leonardi by the great Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler, on loan from the Museum of Art and History in Geneva. Hodler‘s experimentation with the abstract elements of color, line and expression created a vibrant new mode of Swiss art at the dawn of the twentieth century. You will have ample time to investigate each exhibit as well as time to enjoy lunch on your own in the cafeteria located in the Atrium. We will depart Manassas at 9:45 a.m. and Woodbridge at 10:30 a.m. Return time back is approximately 3:45 p.m.

Baltimore, Maryland.

Cost: $85 pp Reservations Open: December 20

Many of the 12 artists represented, such as Los Tres Grandes—Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—are celebrated as the leading proponents of Mexican modernism. Through expressive figurative imagery, the works of these artists often underscored the political, social, and cultural shifts taking place in Mexico after the Mexican Revolution. We have arranged for a private docent to provide insight into the exhibition followed by free time to go back and linger over special works. You are also free to visit the many treasures always housed in this museum. The museum has 95,000 works of art—including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world. NEWSIES

But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys‘ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what‘s right. Newsies is inspired by the real-life ―Newsboy Strike of 1899,‖ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
