Trinity 4

Collects

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal and that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever

God is ever faithful and with us whatever we are going through.

NB: Church starts online at 10.30am, Sunday mornings. Please try to be ready and log on at approx. 10.20am if you’re joining.

The Church will soon be open for private prayer, in line with C19 guidance. More information to follow.

”The church of Jesus Christ is never closed. In fact, the church is more open than ever. +Keith Bishop Keith is encouraging us all to join together as a diocese every Sunday at 8pm by placing a lit candle in your window and praying for the diocese and our nation.

But what can we do? Well, the thing about having hope, faith and courage is that although they are gifts from God, we can do our bit to nurture them. We can take some time to sit quietly and pray, letting God know about those things that are on our hearts and minds. When we do that, we make that connection with God that nourishes and sustains us. Readings for Sunday (Trinity 4)

Romans chapter 7 verses 15-25a I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.

Matthew chapter 11 verses 16-19,25-end ‘But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.” For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.’ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Encouragement through the Word of God

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James chapter 1 vs 17)

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians chapter 4 vs 4-8

We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. Those living far away fear your wonders; where morning dawns and evening fades you call forth songs of joy. You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the desert overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing. (Psalm 65 vs 4b-end)

‘’So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah chapter 41 vs 10 )

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1984/tutu/biographical/ https://www.britannica.com/biography/Desmond-Tutu Tutu was born in 1931 in Transvaal, of Xhosa and Tswana and was educated in South African mission schools at which his father taught. Though he wanted a medical career, Tutu was unable to afford training and instead became a schoolteacher in 1955. He resigned his post in 1957. He then attended St. Peter’s Theological College in Johannesburg and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1961. In 1962 he moved to London, where in 1966 he obtained an M.A. from King’s College London. From 1967 to 1972 he taught theology in South Africa and then from 1972 to 1975 he served as an associate director for the World Council of Churches. He was appointed Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg in 1975, the first black South African to hold that position. From 1976 to 1978 Tutu served as Bishop of Lesotho. In 1978 Tutu accepted an appointment as the general secretary of the South African Council of Churches and became a leading spokesperson for the rights of black South Africans. During the 1980s he played an unrivaled role in drawing national and international attention to the iniquities of apartheid. He emphasized nonviolent means of protest and encouraged the application of economic pressure by countries dealing with South Africa. Desmond Tutu had formulated his objective as “a democratic and just society without racial divisions”, and had set forward the following points as minimum demands: 1. equal civil rights for all 2. the abolition of South Africa’s passport laws 3. a common system of education 4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called “homelands” The award of the 1984 Nobel Prize for Peace to Tutu sent a significant message to South African Pres. P.W. Botha’s administration. In 1985, at the height of the township rebellions in South Africa, Tutu was installed as Johannesburg’s first black Anglican Bishop, and in 1986 he was elected the first black archbishop of Cape Town, thus becoming the primate of South Africa’s 1.6 million-member Anglican church. In 1988 Tutu took a position as chancellor of the University of the Western Cape in Bellville, South Africa. During South Africa’s moves toward democracy in the early 1990s, Tutu propagated the idea of South Africa as “the Rainbow Nation,” and he continued to comment on events with varying combinations of trenchancy and humour. In 1995 South African Pres. Nelson Mandela appointed Tutu head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated allegations of human rights abuses during the apartheid era. Tutu retired from the primacy in 1996 and became archbishop emeritus. In July 2010 he announced his intention to effectively withdraw from public life in October, though he said he would continue his work with the Elders, a group of international leaders he cofounded in 2007 for the promotion of conflict resolution and problem solving throughout the world. On October 7, 2010—his 79th birthday—he began his retirement. Tutu is an honorary doctor of a number of leading universities in the USA, Britain and Germany.

The Light Shines in the Darkness https://www.chester.anglican.org/news/the-light-shines-in-the-darkness.php

Bereavement, unemployment, sadness... it might feel like the darkness is closing in. Yet despite the suffering and difficulties, perhaps it is just the start of the journey to something better. Archdeacon Ian reminds us of the first chapter in the Gospel of St John: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it," and says, "whatever darkness you might know in your life today, I hope you can hold on to St John's promise." Looking ahead to the time when we can meet for public worship again, Ian says: "I hope that we will return with a greater awareness that Christ is not locked down in a building, however beautiful that might be, his presence, his light, is all around us illuminating this world he has made and if we just look we will see and we can wonder...if we have learned anything, let it be that our buildings are but one small part of the full revelation of God and we should not allow ourselves to become obsessed with what happens in them."

Wilmslow Wells for Africa Gardens Day – Thank you! A wide variety of wonderful gardens, each video telling a different story through photographs and commentary, complemented by music, the Virtual Gardens Day has raised £14,000 so far thanks to your support. If you have not seen the videos they are still available to be viewed through our website www.wilmslowwells.org. You can pop in and out of the list of seventeen gardens as you wish. For millions of people theirs is a daily struggle to access fresh water and adequate sanitation and now COVID 19 has added an extra burden. Thank you that we will be able to fund more projects and bring about change.

Beat the Bounds As you know we couldn't organise the Beat the Bounds for East Cheshire Hospice this year in the normal way due to the Coronavirus but I would like to thank Ned Spencer who organised routes for people to walk on their own and raise money. Thank you to everyone who took part and I am pleased to say we have raised £1695.00 plus £330.00 Gift Aid for the Hospice which is fantastic, especially as they are short of funds due to events not being able to take place and the shops being closed. However plans are now in place to reopen the ECH shops on July 6th
