From the principal

Staff Smile of the Week (Week 2)

Goes to Patty for always being on duty even when its not

your turn. Ensuring our students are well looked after!

Hi everyone – Everyone at TCS is doing SOMETHING extra!!

The Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department

of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student

learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes.

The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year.

Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as

track engagement and motivation across the school year.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think

about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in

Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at

school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30

minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in

the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is attached to this weeks newsletter. If you do not want

your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday the 19th August 2016. Copies of the

form and FAQs are available from the website above.

Great News for 2017

2017 looks like being another great year at TCS. We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten and Year 7 and our

information evenings for both these groups will be on Monday 22nd August at 5.30pm for Kindy and 6.30 for Year

7’s. Kindergarten will almost certainly be a straight class in the capable hands of Miss Druce and Years 7 and 8 will be

divided into three groups again, as this year, making core subject groups usually not exceeding twenty.

The Kindergarten will continue to be in the Early Action for Success program which is an amazing program of

individualised learning and where your child’s progress is monitored at every step. Our amazing Year 3 NAPLAN

tests are testimony to the success of this program. Why miss out? Enrol now.

Sporting Success

Students at TCS have a huge range of sporting opportunities and for a small school we have had some notable

successes. Last week Jacana Powell reached State level in javelin. We really congratulate Jacana on continuing to

strive for excellence and being such a worthy representative for our school.

We were thrilled at the number of students who made it to WSSA and the results will be published as soon as they are

received.

Finally ........

My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing

something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single

day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us.

All the best

External Competitions

There is a wealth of opportunities for our students to pursue their interests and passions in external competitions. Keep

your ears and eyes open – teachers will share these competitions in lessons and Monday Musters, and there are often

prizes to be won. There are so many chances for you to improve your skills and demonstrate your talents, so get

involved. You’ve gotta be in it to win it!

Term 3 Focus: Reading

Did you know? Reading independently for just fifteen minutes per day means that you will read over a million extra

words every year. Just think what that will do to grow your vocabulary, not to mention the wonderful stories you will

get to read!

Open Girls League Tag

Last Thursday, nine girls travelled to Coonabarabran to participate in the open Girls League Tag competition. The girls

joined forces with Warren Central School and had a great day!

The team was up against Coonabarabran in their first game going down 10-4 with Taylah Brown scoring the first try

for the day from fullback. We played against Baradine twice on the day with the score in the first game being 8-6 our

way, with Meegan Seymour and Demi Dunn going over for tries. However, as the day progressed and injuries

occurred, the girls lost their second game to Baradine 10-6 with Jacana Powell and Sam Hamilton scoring and

conversions successful from Meegan. Nyngan proved to be strong competitors on the day successfully winning all four

games and taking the day out.

We look forward to next year as the TCS team is young and eager and there is no doubt we will be strong competitors

next year!

Below is a list of safety tips that may help with preventing and avoiding a magpie attack.

Keep alert and pay attention for any magpie nesting sites.

Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.

Wear sun glasses and with a hat to protect your head and eyes.

If a magpie swoops while you are cycling, it will probably stop swooping if you get off your bike and walk.

If you spot a magpie nesting site then stay well clear and even plan alternative routes.

Remember magpies are urban species too, so there is generally no escaping them! If you get swooped then tell others, log the attack and inform your local

council.

Do not provoke the magpies, they are very territorial and will protect their nests.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat or carry an umbrella.

It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.

Try to protect your eyes with your hands, those large beaks are very sharp and eye injuries have been previously recorded.

Magpies seem to have very good memories and have attacked the same people over subsequent seasons and others they just leave alone. If it's attacked

you before probably a good idea to use an alternative route next season! Face the magpie, they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack.

WARNING! They’re back………..

Jacky Murtagh PRIMARY Assistant Principals’ Report

Helper’s Needed Our school is running the Gobonderry/NARRAF Athletics Carnival in a fortnight’s

time (Tuesday, 17th of August) and this gives our school P&C a terrific opportunity to

run the canteen for the event and hopefully, make a substantial income to be spent

within the school. The athletics carnival will be taking place at Barden Park, Dubbo;

giving students from the district the opportunity to experience professional facilities.

It’s promising to be a great day.

The P&C are asking all families to bake one or two cakes

or slices to be sold on the day. Please write the

ingredients on your package and drop them into school

on Monday the 16th for collection and delivery to Dubbo.

If you are available to help on the day, please contact our

P&C organisers; Amanda Kater, Meredith Andrews or

Sally Jane St Clair.

Your support is greatly appreciated!

Good Luck - Wellington Eisteddfod

Best wishes to our Year 3/4 and 5/6 Dance groups who are heading to Wellington next

Monday the 8th of August to compete in the Eisteddfod. Information notes have gone home

regarding the requirements for the day as well as departure and return times. The

participants are all very excited and have been giving up their lunch plays for two terms to

rehearse.

5c Fundraiser

All children are encouraged to bring

spare 5c coins into class for the P&C’s

5c Fundraiser. All classes will have a

jar in their room to fill with silver

coins. There will be a friendly

competition between the classes to see

who can bring in the most 5c coins.

The school captains will count up the

coins each Friday afternoon and

announce the tally at Monday morning

assemblies. The winning class by Term

4-Week 5, will win a class party!! Money raised will be used to

purchase a climbing frame for the playground.
