Harley Rider Nearly Scalped
By Rosie Singhose
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEPOhhhh, its time to getup, I groaned into Jims armpit. What time is it?
he mumbled. Its 6:30. We need to leave by 7:30if were going to get to Salem in time to ride with
the Old Farts Club.
I heard you get up at 2:30 this morning but Inever heard you come back to bed. Were you
working on the book?Yeah, I didnt quit until
5:30 but thats ok, Ill go to bed earlier tonight.
Lets get cracking. I looked out the window at ouroutdoor thermometer. Its 48 degrees and
completely overcast out there. Pull on the long
johnnies.
Jim and I ate a hurried breakfast of instantoatmeal and headed to the bike shop where we
donned still more layers of warm clothing. Out
came our heated vests, velour facemasks, gloves,
and rain gear. You dont need any rain gear,Rosie. Its not supposed to rain today.Famous
last words if Ive ever heard em. I commentedas I rolled up the bottoms to my Frog Togs and
put them into my pack. I added a jacket for Jim
and buttoned it up. Then I pulled my rain jacketon and was ready to roll. Even if it doesnt rain,
this jacket keeps me a lot warmer. You do what
you want, Im wearing mine.
We left the shop at 7:28 and headed to Creswellfor gas. Gas is always a few cents cheaper there

As we approached a stop sign, something flew off
of Toms bike. It floated up into the air from theleft side of his bike and waffled about before
landing in front of my trike. At first, I thought itwas a tin can as all my mind registered was a
flash of blue and gray. I was able to dodge it with
the front of my bike but it flew under one of myback wheels and that was all she wrote. As my
Harley stomped that tin can, I realized it was the
license plate offToms Indian. I tried to stop but
the riders behind were veering every which way togo around me and the side of the road was not
wide enough to pull off.
I slammed back into gear and hurried to catch
Tom at the stop sign before he could take offagain.Tom! Wait, youve lost your license plate!I shouted. He hurriedly rode back to retrieve his
plate while the rest of us waited near the stop
sign.
About half way through the ride, Tom pulled over
into a viewing area where we were treated to agorgeous panorama of the surrounding hills. He
looked over his plate and found it was in good
shape but the blue glass buttons on the cornershad not faired very well. One of them had a large
chip taken out of it and the other three were
scratched. Bummer of a deal but it could have
been a lot worse.
We got back to Tom and Stephanies just in timefor lunch where we met with nine more people for
a fantastic BBQ and licked the bean pots clean.
Thanks to both of you for another great day. Bythe way, Tom, I really am sorry I ran over your
plate but your Indian should know better than to
try to scalp a Harley.
Editors Note:
On behalf of allthose who attended this yearsBBQ, Id like to thankTom and Stephanie for anenjoyable day spent with OTC family and friends.
