May 23rd, Week 4 - Term 2 TPS NEWS From John and Silvia ..... NAPLAN Our year 3, 5 and 7 students have completed NAPLAN Online for 2019. As reported in the media, day 1 of testing resulted in some glitches. For our year 5 and 7’s there were occasional disruptions where students were logged out for up to 20 seconds. This was an inconvenience and could have interrupted a child’s train of thought momentarily. With this is mind, it is important to remember NAPLAN is just a snapshot of student learning. It is one of many assessment pieces we use to identify where students are at with their learning, and where their learning heads next. SunSmart Our Governing Council has reviewed our current Sun Protection Policy. From next term, hats will be worn in terms 1, 3 and 4, and in term 2 when it is a day of high UV ratings. Classrooms will also have Sunscreen dispensers. With this in place Torrensville Primary will be a SunSmart School. Election Day BBQ WOW, what a fantastically successful day! Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers from our Torrensville Primary community, who gave their time generously to assist in the running and planning of Election Day, and to the many who donated baked treats. Thank you to Nova 919 for donating the chicken parmi sausages and to Woolies (Brickworks) for donating the bread. The Parents and Friends raised an impressive $2,500, that’s quite a lot of democracy snags!! Volunteers If you are intending in volunteering at School, (this includes attending excursions, listening to reading, supporting in the classroom/across the school, coaching sports teams), then you need to complete Responding to Abuse and Neglect training. If you were unable to attend the last training session, another session has been scheduled for Thursday the 30th of May, 1:00 til 3:00pm in the library. Phone or email Jen to book in ([email protected]).

Eggy News

I was extremely excited when I found out that we were going to get a surprise. I thought it was a plant but we got 10 chick’s eggs. I was so surprised and happy.

We were so happy. On Wednesday we had two hatched but one had a crack in it and we watched it and it finally hatched but we watched it for so long we were late for P.E. We learnt that it can take 21 days for a chick to start tapping the shell and 24 hours for it to come out.

We had so much fun. These were my favourite activities holding the chicks and letting them run free outside when we are sitting in a circle. It was so fun getting into groups, naming the chicks and getting to know them better.

Chicks Life

I felt so eggcited to guess what the surprise was. I guessed it was Easter eggs for all of us to share. But I was wrong but that’s okay. I loved the scrambled eggs that we had as a clue. They were so buttery, I loved them!

Watching them hatch was so cute to watch. I had never seen a real chicken hatch. At first they looked weird but then they got fluffy and cute. It was so amazing.

I love that they got to run free. It was fun watching them run free, it made me feel happy. It also made me feel happy seeing them grow up and get strong and brave.

I was feeling really excited before our surprise came. I thought it was going to be a chicken and I was right. The chickens hatched out by pecking and flapping their wings. I learnt about the chickens that they eat

a lot and sleep a lot too.I have had a lot of fun with all the baby chicks.By Billy

Eggstra Eggstra Read All about It….Rooms 3 & 4 have had a very exciting start to term 2 with the arrival of 10 chicken’s eggs. Students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of observing the hatching process and watching the baby chicks develop, learning how to take care of them and the stages of a chicken’s life-cycle.

Rooms 3 and 4 have worked cooperatively on tasks together and individually creating some gorgeous chick art sketches, writing responses including narratives, summaries of their experiences and short focused written tasks. Students followed the chick’s development by measuring each baby chick’s growth within mathematics. We even enjoyed a whole group ‘Chicken Dance’ session.

Torrensville participated in SAPSASA 2019 for the airport district a few weeks ago. 3 people in our school got through to the next round, state carnival. Myself and Leo participated in the same U12 relay and came 5th, which was two places off a medal. Harry Lee also made it in to the state carnival and participated in the long jump. Harry managed to come 5th in the state, which is also two places off a medal. Overall we all had a fun day and it was especially great to see Airport (the district we represented) win the whole thing. Airport has only won two times in the history of SAPSASA (since 1912). The Hellenic Presidential Guard Last Tuesday 30th of April, a group of 15 Middle Years students, John McCade, myself and a small group of fabulous parents and grandparents had the privilege to be invited to St. George College to attend a special assembly that they hosted for the Hellenic Presidential Guard ( the Evzones ). Whilst they were here on their visit to Adelaide to pay their respects to our ANZACS, the Commanding Officer shared insightful information regarding the Evzones history, the uniforms origins and its significance, making it a truly memorable experience for all. We had the rare privilege to see four of the Evzones in their traditional uniforms and to get up close and take a group photo, as well as being given the experience to allow our students to be in absolute awe and pride as information was shared by their commanding officer.

The Evzones are historically the elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army, hence their different uniforms for different regions of Greece. Today the Evzones are members of the Hellenic Presidential Guard, who stand guard in front Parliament on Syntagma Square in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A huge thank you to our parents and grandmothers who assisted in transportation of students and making this event possible for us.

Jenny Stavropoulos - LOTE Teacher

It was a pleasure to see and meet the Evzones. It was nice how their captain shared a power point with us. The Evzones each wore different uniforms to show us. It was an amazing experience, we learnt loads and were extremely impressed with the whole presentation. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.By Lana and Katerina Rm 12

It was really cool to see the Evzones and I think we were really lucky to see them in Adelaide.

When we went to visit St. George we saw the Evzones. They walked up to the stage and stood there on guard whilst their captain talked about what they were wearing and what they do in Greece. It was an overall great experience because they taught us how they work and the history behind the costumes.By George Rm 10

It was great to see the Evzones march, and getting to know the uniqueness of their different uniforms from different parts of Greece.By Thomai Rm 10
