foreWordFor a practice with a history extending over nine decades, the work of tp bennett has a freshness, an openness and a commitment to innovation and experiment that is rooted in creative teamwork. Founded by Thomas Penberthy Bennett in 1921, the practice pioneered the development of high quality commercial architecture in Britain, through its built projects, some of them now protected by listing, include theatres, housing, hospitals and religious buildings. Bennett wrote that “the great contribution of the architect to the living population is design” and this credo drives the practice today.
Good design for tp bennett is about problem solving, about balancing the creative urge with the imperative to address the practical requirements of clients and future users. Long experience matters here – hence the practice’s impressive list of regular clients – but more important is its willingness to discard preconceptions and obvious solutions and develop a concept based on a detailed analysis of the client brief. Concept-led design is fundamental to the practice’s approach. The design concept provides a framework for developing a project from an initial idea through detailed design to delivery. This process provides the opportunity to test the strength of the concept – only if it has the required qualities of practicality, robustness and legibility will it evolve into a completed project.
The work of the practice, whether the project in question is a new building or an interior fit-out, is about the management of light, space and materials. Diversity is a key element in the culture of the practice. The range of recent and ongoing projects is remarkable, extending, if not quite to the classic
formula of “everything from a chair to an entire city”, across the public and private fields and from Britain to a number of international locations. A design-led approach for tp bennett embraces core values – including collaborative teamwork, extending to a close working relationship with clients, a commitment to design that is socially and environmentally responsible and responsive to physical and human context, and a belief that intelligent design is about professionalism and the need to constantly explore new ways of doing things. The culture of the office is that of a creative atelier, where the first test of a design concept is whether it can survive rigorous internal review and debate. The office team is youthful and drawn from many countries. Its meritocratic ethos attracts outstanding talents from schools worldwide and gives them the scope to flourish in the real world of construction and development. The office is a sociable place, where teamwork is not an aspiration but a reality, extending beyond working hours into, for example, study tours and sporting events. At the heart of teamwork is creative interaction, building the design strengths of the practice.
Today tp bennett’s expertise is being applied to an ever wider range of projects, with education, healthcare and infrastructure as areas of growth alongside the established commercial sector. With its unshakeable commitment to the art of architecture, the practice is responding energetically to an age of social and environmental crisis and building on a fine legacy of work.

Our core values underpin everything we do. We are design-led, responsible, intelligent, and collaborative.
Established in 1921, we value our past but always look to the future, evolving and embracing the constant shifts in culture and technology whilst ensuring good design is the one thing that remains constant.

shoWcaseAs a creative practice we are constantly looking for new artistic channels to generate fresh ideas and debate. Each year we hold an internal design competition wrapped around a theme, often working in collaboration with like-minded companies, with the aim of showcasing and nurturing in-house talent.
Over the years our designers have brought to life an on-stage fashion performance for Disruption in conjunction with the Barbican (inspired by the Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion exhibition), created a chair in conjunction with renowned model makers ak:1, and shaped innovative solutions for underutilised spaces in our local community in conjunction with Better Bankside.
We have furthered our collaboration with the Barbican through partnering and support for a number of major recent exhibitions: Le Corbusier: the Art of Architecture (2009); Bauhaus: Art as Life (2012); and Pop Art Design (2013).
