Welcometo the 36th Annual Towaw Bull Sale.The last year has been a very good one here at Towaw. We had ample rain and sunshine, producing very good pasture, hay and grain crops. We weaned off as good a group of calves as we have ever produced in our 40 plus years of raising Purebred Red Angus. Mom and Dad continue to enjoy good health and are still spending part of the winter in Arizona. Thomas is over a year past his treatments and is growing like a weed. The twins are enjoying showing cattle and school and cheer activities. As a family we got to spend quite a bit of time at junior shows and really enjoyed it. Jill has also started selling livestock insurance as a new venture.

In last year’s catalog we talked about how good of a time it was to be in the cattle business. We wrote about buying price insurance to guarantee $1145 calves and $1445 yearlings. Well the market definitely blew by those numbers and cattle producers had their most profitable year in recent memory! The cattle numbers are down and we, as producers, are certainly reaping the benefits. The markets should be good for another couple of years yet, but this is also a time to look to the future when the prices may start to dip a bit. With the outstanding commercial market it has been easier for us to cull the bulls hard. Of the bull calves born in 2013, only about 40% are on offer in the sale. A big part of your bull purchase this year is not only his calves next spring, but also his daughters’ having their first calf three years from now. We have based our cowherd on the strong economic principles of fertility, longevity and easy fleshiness, and these traits are passed on to their sons. Towaw genetics are right for these times but will also not leave you in the lurch when every cow has to pay her way on a tighter budget.

Once again this year Dave, Rhonda, Brooke and Bryce from Rainbow Red Angus are consigning a strong group of yearlings to the sale. Dave and his crew have always been a strong part of the sale and their exciting offering is chock full of new genetics highlighted by their embryo program. Kolby Heaven has been working with Rainbow, as well as our herd, and knows the genetics as well as any of us. All bulls in the sale sell with the same guarantee, and if a problem occurs please contact us so we can work to rectify the situation.

We will be starting the sale at 2:00 pm MST. We feel this gives folks time to get things done at home and still have time to look at the bulls prior to the sale. If you can’t make it to the sale we have a sight unseen purchase plan as well as a number of sales staff that would be able to bid on your behalf. We are also working with DLMS who will have the sale broadcast on the internet. The DLMS information will be displayed on future pages where Mark Shologan and his crew can get you set up to bid online. Please join us for lunch prior to the sale, and a meal and refreshments after the sale as well. After a long build up to this day, it sure is nice to relax and visit with customers and friends, both old and new.

RETAINED INTERESTSWe are selling some bulls in this sale as 2/3 interest and full possession. The 2/3 interest part means that the seller wishes to retain a 1/3 interest in the bull entitling him to use the bull through artificial insemination and sharing in any future drawing expenses and revenue of semen on a 1/3 basis. Full possession entitles the new owner to all physical rights to the bull. As in any other information, announcements from the block take precedence over any written information in the catalog.

DELIVERY & BOARDA rebate of $50.00 per bull will be offered to buyers who bring their trailer and truck their bulls home themselves within one week of sale day. We Will deliver bulls free of charge within Western Canada or closest U.S. port of entry. Bulls will be kept at Towaw, free of charge, until April 20, 2015. If bulls are left longer a fee of $2.00 per day will be charged. Bulls are left entirely at the risk of the purchaser and we recommend that insurance be taken.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSTErMs: Unless otherwise previously arranged with Towaw Cattle Co., terms of this sale are cash or cheque, payable in Canadian funds. As soon as an animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the stand at sale time, and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.

DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

This year we will be working with Mark Shologan and broadcasting our sale over the Internet on DLMS.ca.

The bulls will be videotaped prior to the sale and on sale day we will have large TV screens set up with the bulls video running while they sell. Two weeks before the sale, videos of every bull will be available at our website www.towawcattle.com or at www.dlms.ca.

With this change we will be going with a traditional auction system with Robert Lind auctioneering for us. He will be ably assisted by Ryan Dorran. Bryon Wolters, will also be acting as a ringman at the sale.

We purchased Excel from Glen and Darlene Glesman in the summer of 2011 to add a little more performance to some of our cows. He is a long bodied, powerful bull that is sound as the day is long and he certainly shows that in his calves. He goes way back to an Expansion son we sold Glen and also has Bieber Design way up in his pedigree. His dam had 16 natural calves in her lifetime including an Indeed daughter they have been flushing in partnership with Miller Wilson Angus. Excel is co-owned with Rainbow Red Angus.

Three winters ago we went down to Benchmark Angus to look at sons of Basin EXT 45T5, impressed with his performance and set of EPDs. We were so impressed with sons and daughters of this bull, a son Better Beef, won Denver in 2012, that we purchased a half interest in him to breed cows at Towaw. He is in the top 1% for most all of the growth and carcass traits and in the top 10% for calving ease. We have a large group of his sons in the sale this year, look for big performance and expect good carcass traits in his progeny. Kingman is one of the main herdsires here at Towaw and his son’s were our top sellers in last year’s sale. We purchased him in partnership with Ter-Ron farms as the high seller in Lazy MC’s 2010 bull sale for $21,000. He has an outcross pedigree for our herd and has passed on his thickness, ease of fleshing and calving ease to his sons. He has naturally bred upwards of 250 females in three years of breeding and always stays in great shape. His daughters are easy fleshing with picture perfect udders. We used two of his son’s in our herd last year.

Calidad has turned into a very impressive sire for adding muscle shape and easy fleshing genetics to our herd. He was our pick of the Brigadier genetics we imported from Argentina. His full brother sold for $10,000 in our 2013 Sale to Grant and Tanya Chittick and has bred well for them as well. He was only with a small group of cows his first year as he was only 13 months old when he started breeding. Next year he will have our largest group of bulls in the sale and they look awesome right now. Reese showed a daughter of his last fall and she was the Champion Red Angus Yearling heifer at the strong Olds Fall Classic Gold Show.

He is incredibly attractive and sound and passes that extra eye appeal on to his sons. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for milk, calving ease and birthweight; just what you need in an elite calving ease bull. His dam is one of our top cows and the Tiger bull has done an extremely good job of breeding across North America.

Another bull that is very typical of the Recoil sire group, being dark red, very hairy and stout made. He is backed by an outstanding cow that has been designated an Elite Dam by the Canadian Angus Association. She has had 4 bulls go through the sale. Volcom is an awesome bull to evaluate in person and is great on paper as well. He is in the top 10% of the breed for WW, YW, Milk, and Carcass Weight, and is in the top 5% for Total Maternal.

Low birth, superb phenotype and backed by a great cow. That’s the formula to make a great heifer bull, and this stylish young bull has them all. It’s not all that often that a bull this big hipped and stout is also a heifer bull. His dam has quickly become a standout in our herd and possesses an absolutely fantastic udder. Transcendence is a bull that we have been excited about all year. He is moderate, extremely stout, hairy and monster bellied. He is backed by two phenomenal parents. His sire, Protocol, was our high seller two years ago at $22000 to U2 Ranch, and his dam is one of the best we own. She is also the mother of last year’s high seller, Defiance, who sold to Meadowvale M Red Angus and Phantom Farms in SK. This bull is a truly unique red angus bull and those that have seen him agree. We thought enough of this calf at a month old, that we flushed him mother for full sibs last spring. From that flush, we calved out 5 full brothers, and wow, they look awesome. Selling ½ interest & full possession.
