BREEDING GuARANTEE:

All cattle are sound and right and sell with a “Responsible

Breeders Guarantee”. All bulls are guaranteed to be structurally

sound and to have passed a fertility examination by a licensed

Veterinarian. We guarantee satisfaction or we will replace the

bull with one of equal value. Should this not be possible, an

adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question

or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. All

females sell under the terms and conditions in accordance with

the Canadian Angus Association.

Each animal will carry a CCIA digital frequency tags as well as

corresponding Lot tag and tattoo.

Bovi-Shield Gold FP 5VL5 , poured with Ivomec, and will be fer-

tility tested and guaranteed sound by Dr. Jackie Dobinson,

Stettler Veterinary Clinic. Al l s al e femal es have been vacci-

nated with a Clostridial 8-way, Cattlemaster 4 VL5 or Bovi-

Shield Gold FP 5VL5, and poured with Noromectin.

ANNOuNCEMENTS:

Errors in this catalog will be corrected by announcements from

the block at sale time and such corrections will take precedent

over any printed material. Any disputes will be settled by the

auctioneer.

At the end of their forage test, the less efficient andunadapted bulls are culled, as well as those with struc-tural problems. Most of the survivors will be offeredfor sale in our spring bull sale with a complete breedingsoundness guarantee.

Although this program has an extremely high fall-out rate, we believe it is the best way to performancetest our maternal genetics.

There are several obvious advantages to usingolder, forage-tested bulls. Since these bulls are olderand more mature they are able to handle a heavierworkload. Since they are in range condition, in contrastto being overweight, they’re able to maintain or gainweight during their first breeding season. Many cus-tomers have reiterated testimonials how their Chapmanbull was the only bull not to lose condition throughoutthe breeding season.

Since these bulls have never been confined tosmaller pens and/ or forced to eat a high concentrateration, they will be much healthier and will last muchlonger. Bull longevity is an extremely important eco-nomic trait.

Ultimately, since these bulls have proven their abili-ty to survive and perform in an all-forage environment,they should pass that genetic potential on to their off-spring.

The Advantages of Forage-Developed Bulls

What is a 100% ‘Forage-Developed Bull’? This isa bull that has been developed and tested for his abilityto perform on an all forage (grass/hay) diet. Typically,most bulls are developed and tested on a high concen-trate (grain) ration similar to the rations used to fattencattle in a feedlot. Even claims of a high-roughage dietmay not accurately define how that bull has been devel-oped.

It is common knowledge that these hot feedlotrations will negatively affect a bull’s fertility, digestivesystem and liver function, as well as the soundness ofhis feet and legs.

It stands to reason, the bulls that perform best in aforage-raised environment should sire cattle that arealso more efficient foragers. Therefore, this is a veryimportant economic trait for ranchers who produce theirown replacement females to select for.

Chapman Cattle Company started marketing forage-tested bulls in 2006. Why? the reasons are twofold.First, we believed in the basic concept of forage testingour maternal genetics since we were already movingour cowherd towards a grass-based production system.Second, it provided a way for us to market our late-spring born bull calves as long yearlings.

The bulls are initially weaned in November wherethey begin their forage testing. They are roughedthrough their first winter on mixed hay with little, orno, protein supplement. This stage of developmentalways does an excellent job of “separating the menfrom the boys”.

The bulls will spend their second summer on an all-grass diet. It’s not uncommon for them to gain over 2pounds per day during the summer. In October, thebulls come off grass and are weighed. This marks theend of their forage test. Since the bulls are run in largegroups, our ratios should accurately reflect their truegenetic merit when comparing gain.

EPD’s evaluate group averages and offspring’s per-

formance. They can not predict individual perform-

ance or weights.

For example, if Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and

Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten simi-

lar cows, we would expect the group average weaning

weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than that

of Bull B’s (60 - 10 = 50).

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual

assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate

optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for

extremes generally results in unexpected consequences

due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selec-

tion for high yearling weight will also increase birth

weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful

and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and

carcass merit while improving profitability and

efficiency.

Rolette, ND. Extremely long bodied, there is a lot of muscle expres-

sion down his top which and he carries this muscle out into a big

expressive rump and is a very stylish bull. He weaned off his out-

standing dam with a 205 day weight of 732 lbs. to ratio 108 and

scanned exceptionally with an IMF of 5.23 to ratio 128 and a REA of

13 to ratio 106. His perfect uddered, big ribbed, easy fleshing dam

has been outstanding to this point with a WWR of 2/112, YWR 2/107,

IMF 2/111 and a REA of 2/110.

218U was our pick of the Sinclair Rito Legacy 3R9 sons to retain

and use. 3R9 sons have added muscling, traditional Angus character

and moderation of frame and as a young sire 218U exhibits all of

these characteristics.

His dam, Pat Lady Erica 8984, is a model Angus cow and per-

haps the best cow Crowfoot has sold to date, was flushed this sum-

mer, and is extremely sound as a 14 year old cow.

scanned exceptionally with an IMF of 5.23 to ratio 128 and a REA of

13 to ratio 106. His perfect uddered, big ribbed, easy fleshing dam

has been outstanding to this point with a WWR of 2/112, YWR 2/107,

IMF 2/111 and a REA of 2/110.

For example, if Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and

lar cows, we would expect the group average weaning

weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than that

of Bull B’s (60 - 10 = 50).

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual

assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate

optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for

extremes generally results in unexpected consequences

due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selec-

tion for high yearling weight will also increase birth

weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful

and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and

carcass merit while improving profitability and

efficiency.

The Advantages of Forage-Developed Bulls

What is a 100% ‘Forage-Developed Bull’? This isa bull that has been developed and tested for his abilityto perform on an all forage (grass/hay) diet. Typically,most bulls are developed and tested on a high concen-trate (grain) ration similar to the rations used to fattencattle in a feedlot. Even claims of a high-roughage dietmay not accurately define how that bull has been devel-oped.

It is common knowledge that these hot feedlotrations will negatively affect a bull’s fertility, digestivesystem and liver function, as well as the soundness ofhis feet and legs.

It stands to reason, the bulls that perform best in aforage-raised environment should sire cattle that arealso more efficient foragers. Therefore, this is a veryimportant economic trait for ranchers who produce theirown replacement females to select for.

Chapman Cattle Company started marketing forage-tested bulls in 2006. Why? the reasons are twofold.First, we believed in the basic concept of forage testingour maternal genetics since we were already movingour cowherd towards a grass-based production system.Second, it provided a way for us to market our late-spring born bull calves as long yearlings.

The bulls are initially weaned in November wherethey begin their forage testing. They are roughedthrough their first winter on mixed hay with little, orno, protein supplement. This stage of developmentalways does an excellent job of “separating the menfrom the boys”.

The bulls will spend their second summer on an all-grass diet. It’s not uncommon for them to gain over 2pounds per day during the summer. In October, thebulls come off grass and are weighed. This marks theend of their forage test. Since the bulls are run in largegroups, our ratios should accurately reflect their truegenetic merit when comparing gain.

Shield Gold FP 5VL5, and poured with Noromectin.

At the end of their forage test, the less efficient andunadapted bulls are culled, as well as those with struc-tural problems. Most of the survivors will be offeredfor sale in our spring bull sale with a complete breedingsoundness guarantee.

Although this program has an extremely high fall-out rate, we believe it is the best way to performancetest our maternal genetics.

There are several obvious advantages to usingolder, forage-tested bulls. Since these bulls are olderand more mature they are able to handle a heavierworkload. Since they are in range condition, in contrastto being overweight, they’re able to maintain or gainweight during their first breeding season. Many cus-tomers have reiterated testimonials how their Chapmanbull was the only bull not to lose condition throughoutthe breeding season.

Since these bulls have never been confined tosmaller pens and/ or forced to eat a high concentrateration, they will be much healthier and will last muchlonger. Bull longevity is an extremely important eco-nomic trait.

Ultimately, since these bulls have proven their abili-ty to survive and perform in an all-forage environment,they should pass that genetic potential on to their off-spring.
