Introduction
Tourism is an important human activity
It has economic, social, cultural & educational impacts
It accounts 6% of world’s service sector exports
In many countries, it is major source of FE income
Bangladesh has many potential tourist attractions
But growth of tourism industry is very slow

Beach and Natural Tourism inNational Tourism Policy 2010
Evolved from earlier policy of 1992
Main goal is to establish tourism industry as one of the main sectors for economic development
It has 30 specific objectives and 11 policy targets
Development of beach and natural tourism is number one policy target

Purpose and Scope of the Evaluation
To examine overall effectiveness of the policy
With the context of development of beach tourism
Beaches are main tourist attractions in Bangladesh
Success of tourism industry largely depends on it
Aligned with of 7th FYP (GDP growth, good job creation)
Hence it is significant to conduct this evaluation

Based on secondary data
Sources: books, reports, articles, websites, newspapers

Limitations
Time was short and within busy schedule of SSC
No beach is visited for evaluation purpose
There is no separate data on beach tourism
Evaluation conducted on secondary data, so facts and information may not be updated in some cases

Cox’s Bazar beach was placed in ‘new 7 wonders’ world competition
A tourism village is under construction through PPP at 120 acres land of Shaibal motel of BPC

Problems and Barriers
Government allocation is not sufficient
No field offices both of BPC and BTB
Lack of skilled manpower to meet increasing demand
“Beautiful Bangladesh” does not represent any special identity for Bangladesh
Do not have any country icon to promote tourism

Poor tourist friendly facilities, inadequate infrastructure
Poor communication system
Weak security specially for the foreign tourists
Tourists do not find any night-life activities
Foreign tourists face problem to enjoy food and drinks

Conclusions
Inadequate investment, poor promotional activities,management problem and scarcity of skilled manpower are major weaknesses for beach tourism development
Private investment is necessary to develop beach tourism
Effective implementation of the policy may reduce these weaknesses and able to develop beach tourism industry

More government allocation for tourism development
Creating tourism offices at filed level
Capacity development to meet increasing demand
Re-branding of tourism and introduce a country icon
Fostering beach tourism
Create friendly environment for foreign tourists
Introducing Tourism Satellite Account System

Policy is being implemented within limited resource
Beach tourism has potentiality to generate huge employment, poverty reduction, earning foreign exchange
Beaches and islands need careful use to maintain ecologically balance and sustainability
