DO YOU HAVE VARICOSE VEINS?

We are a clinical site participating in the VeClose clinical research study that compares a new treatment method for symptomatic varicose veins with a current treatment option. If you qualify to participate, your procedure costs are covered by the research trial. If you would like more information about this study, please call 858.657.1004

Sometimes, no matter how much we diet or exercise, we find ourselves with stubborn deposits of fat we wish we could eliminate. Unfortunately, genetics and hormonal fluctuations with age are typically to blame, making it difficult.

Tumescent liposculpture is the most advanced technique for permanently removing excess fat. Once the area is completely numb, the fatty deposits are gently removed with small microcannulas allowing the surgeon to artistically sculpt the body and feather the areas treated with the surrounding areas for a smoother silhouette. Tumescent liposculpture is commonly used to treat the love-handles, hips, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, back (bra-line) arms, and neck.

A great non-invasive option is CoolSculpting®, an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that can be used to treat unwanted love handles, bra-line and stomach fat. The device works by drawing the fat bulge into a clamp, lined by 2 cooling panels that precisely control cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. No anesthesia or downtime is required, and one, 1-hour treatment typically can achieve a 25% reduction of fat in the treated area. The procedure is non-invasive, so patients can return to their normal activities immediately after.

THAT IS THE QUESTION

Aging of the skin results from a combination of damage from ultraviolet exposure and the intrinsic aging process. Sun-damaged skin is characterized by skin laxity, lines/wrinkles, brown spots, redness, roughness and fine blood vessels. Intense Pulsed Light is a simple procedure that can address any and all of these concerns with no downtime. A new study has documented that when the IPL is performed once a year after 8 years of treatment, patients look 9 years younger. The body’s natural process then removes the injured tissue over the course of three weeks leaving the skin with a more even and youthful appearance. EVENTS

SATURDAY, JULY 20TH Beauty Boot Camp with Dr. William Groff

Join Dr. William Groff as he presents and demonstrates tools and technology to battle the war on aging. Get your skin in tip top shape by reserving your seat TODAY!

We are excited to announce that a new filler for volumizing the cheeks will most likely be available late 2013 or early 2014. This filler, by Allergan, is soft, natural and lasts 18-24 months!

Our center participated in the multicenter clinical trial for the FDA. Our own Dr. Butterwick, testified to the FDA subpanel in May, and the product was unanimously passed that afternoon! It will now go through a few more checks and balances. We will let you know as soon as it arrives in our office!

COMING SOON...VOLUMA

According to recent reports from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, non-invasive cosmetic procedures are on the rise. Laser and light procedures were very popular with 1.5 million treatments in 2012, followed by neuromodulator injections and soft tissue fillers.

Though 2012’s data is quite similar to the year previous, as a Board Certified Dermatologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, and President-Elect of the ASDS, I believe that 2013 may bring new changes to the data in several ways.

One of the more interesting statistics of the survey depicted that only 8% of patients that underwent soft tissue fillers in 2012 were male. I notice more and more men seeking facial rejuvenation than ever before so absolutely believe that this number will continue to rise in 2013.

Sclerotherapy is another procedure that we continue to see increase every year. It is an extremely safe and effective treatment for hand, chest and leg veins. Dermatologists will continue to treat more patients experiencing unwanted spider veins as people find out how easy the procedure is!

Ultimately, using the latest technology we can treat almost every sign of aging. Please call our office to schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss your options!

TREATMENTS

This time of year many patients come in to look better before a big event....a graduation, wedding, or reunion. They don’t want to look different, just less tired, more vibrant, a little younger and refreshed. The combination of neuromodulators and fillers is one of the best ways to look refreshed quickly. First, neuromodulators (Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®) are used to relax frown lines in the forehead and crow’s feet lines about the eyes. These injections relax the muscles so they don’t crease as deeply with facial expression. Injections in the neck muscle bands (the platysma) relax some of the downward pull for a lifting effect and diminish the strands or ropey look under the neck. Next, fillers are used to reduce wrinkles, hollows, dark circles and to add beauty to the cheeks. Starting in our 30’s we lose 1 tsp of volume every day. Adding volume back to the face creates the most natural rejuvenation because it addresses the major cause of the aged look--not gravity-- but volume loss. These 2 treatments can be done in one office visit, usually with little down time. However, sometimes bruising can occur. At our office, we can treat any bruising that develops the next day with a pulsed dye laser free of charge. Following, patients can easily cover up any discoloration with makeup.

THE HAIR!

At our practice we are constantly looking for new ways to help our patients avoid the need for surgery. We have developed a new technique that combines laser technology with the newest state of the art skin tightening device, Ultherapy®. This combination can yield results that are superior to a traditional facelift!

This new treatment, which we refer to as Ultralift, combines our UltraRepair procedure with Ultherapy. Any patient with sun damage or loss of elasticity can benefit from this procedure. Some patients may require 1-2 lasers and some patients may require 5-6 devices in one treatment session. How can the UltraLift/ UltraRepair procedure be better than a facelift? First and foremost, it is non- surgical. This means no need for general anesthesia. This makes the procedure safer and much less costly than a surgical facelift. Secondly, facelifts don’t address any of the surface issues with our skin, including wrinkles around the mouth, brown spots, broken capillaries, and texture changes. UltraLift/UltraRepair not only lifts and tightens skin, but addresses surface changes too. Lastly, because UltraLift is a non-surgical procedure, there are no scars like there are with a traditional facelift. There is no risk of looking like a wind tunnel victim. Schedule a consultation with any of our doctors to see if UltraLift/Ultrarepair is the right procedure for you!

GOT SOMETHING BETTER

Non-invasive

cosmetic procedures

such as lasers,

injectables and

sclerotherapy are

on the rise.

We are continually making tremendous progress in our abilities to surgically restore hair growth in a very natural-looking manner. The natural appearance is achieved by transplanting hairs into the natural units in which they grow, usually small units of 2 or 3 hairs. One of the limitations of this procedure, though, is the limited supply of donor hair. Fortunately, we’re not far from being able to develop new hair follicles without transplanting them. Local company, Histogen, has developed a bioengineered formulation, Hair Stimulating Complex (HSC), that triggers stem cell activity to produce new follicles and stimulate growth in existing ones. Large studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in stimulating hair growth in just one treatment. The amount of hair stimulated in each person varies, but increased density was seen in all patients and persisted through the 6-month study period. In addition, a variant of this formulation, Follicular Holding Solution (FHS), has been used to store hair follicles prepared for transplantation. By stimulating stem cells, FHS enhances survival of hair follicles. Studies of FHS used with follicular unit hair transplantation have demonstrated faster healing, less scarring and enhanced follicular survival. Using FHS with another transplant procedure results in better hair growth and density than either alone. I’m currently working with Dr Gail Naughton, developer of HSC and FHS, on clinical studies using both formulations. I am excited about these opportunities and the capability to provide unequaled results in hair growth restoration.
