RBs
High knee running over bags
Purpose:
A. To develop high knee running and body awareness.B.
Improve Ball Security
Description:
A. Have 5 square bags placed accordingly.B. Have a back run (full speed) over each bag in succession.

Purpose:
To develop hip flexibility, body balance, and increase body control.
Description:

C. The runner should keep eyes up, drop hips to change direction, gather (no stuttersteps) before direction change, head north and south and accelerate.

Purpose:

A. Bunny Hop1. Each player will hop (both feet on ground-together-then jump) hitting
every hole.2. get good height and arm action. Move as quickly as possible.

B. Checker Board1. Each player will hop (same technique as bunny hop) checker boarding
hitting 1 space and then jumping 45 to another hole. The zig-zag will
continue until space of stepper is covered.
C. High Stepper1. Each player will high step the entire distance stepping into each space
separately churning the legs. This will be the left foot on the left side each
time it comes down and the right foot on the right side.
D. Cross Over1. The cross over is moving down the ropes alternating right foot to left side,
left foot to right side, right foot to left side, etc.
Coaching Points:
Running movement should be smoth and rhythmic. Check also that ball is always held
correctly.

Purpose:

execute an exchange of the ball accordingly to proper handoff technique at that moment
the next player starts to get the next handoff and handoff the ball to the next playercoming at him.

QB
Dropback drills
Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB on dropback passes.
Description:
Have QB take his presnap stance, giving a short cadence, simulating the snap and take 3-,
5- and 7-step drops, ending with a throwing motion without actually throwing the ball.
In teaching period each QB should do it on his own, but when using this drill as a routinedrill, all QBs can line up about 3 to 5 yards apart, with one QB giving the cadence and all
QBs doing the drop.
Coaching Points:
(everything is explained for right-handed QBs, for left-handed QBs you have to exchange
left and right)
The first step has to be taken with his right foot and should be big and directlybehind the left foot so that the drop is straight backwards.
While taking his first step the QB turns by bringing his right hip, shoulder andelbow back to accelerate his separation from the LOS
The last two steps have to be shorter, so that QB is in good body-control positionand ready to throw on his last step.
QB should take the ball up in front of his right armpit with his first step, holding ittight with both hands.
During the drop the ball should stay put in front of his right armpit, while theelbows should hang/swing loose to improve balance
QB should always look over his left shoulder downfieldEquipment:

Rollout drills
Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB on Rollout passes.
Description:
Use a line-strip or put cones up marking the Center and Tackles.
Put cones or towels about 6 yrds behind the Tackles.

out around the cone/towel in the backfield and doing about 1 yard behind the LOS with a

throwing motion without actually throwing the ball. QB should continue running
downfield about 5 yards across the LOS.The throwing motion is just to give the QB more of a feeling where that LOS is, so he
will know when he crosses the LOS and can't throw the ball any more.
In teaching period each QB should do it on his own, but when using this drill as a routinedrill, all QBs can line up about 5 yards apart, with one QB giving the cadence and all
QBs doing the rollout (to the same side, of course :-) ).
Coaching Points:
QB has to push off with the left foot (when rolling right) and get depth. The top of the arc should be behind the Tackle (where you put the cone or towel)
and be reached with 5 steps.
Then the QB should shorten his stride running 'downhill' under control. When running towards the LOS the QB should turn the upper body with non-
throwing shoulder pointing downfield (almost "turning his back to the receiver"),
while his hips are still turned towards where he is running.
QB should take the ball up in front of his right armpit (for left-handed QBs theleft armpit) with his first step, holding it tight with both hands.
During the rollout the ball should stay put in front of his right armpit, while theelbows should hang/swing loose to improve balance

The scrambling triangular

Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB if he is ever under attack when dropping
back into the pocket.
Description:
Have the QB drop back 5 steps with the ball up right showing pass. After the drop(keeping the ball in the passing position) run upward to the right at a 45 degree angle,
side shuffle to the left, and drop back at a 45 degree angle again the right end up where hestarted. After he returns to the start position he then throws a pass to a player or coachstanding on the right or left to develope throwing in different direction.

Description:
Mesh Drill: the first progression will just include a center (you should never practice QBtiming without a snap) and the diveback. On command the center snaps the ball to the
QB, the diveback runs on his path, while the QB just does his steps to mesh and ride the
diveback, and then continues downhill the LOS.Give or keep drill: the next progression is to include a DE who will either slant downthe LOS to tackle the diveback or stay to stop the QB. The QB should read the DE and
decide whether to give the diveback the ball or keep it.
Option pitch drill: the next progression is to include the pitchback. Everything stays thesame, except that the QB will pitch the ball to the pitchback when he gets to the end of

the LOS (if he didn't read give before).
Full triple option drill: the last progression is to include an OLB, who will either attackthe QB or goes on a path to take the pitchback out of the play. The QB then has first to
read the DE, and if he read keep then to read the OLB and decide whether to keep the
ball or pitch it to the pitchback.Each progression should be started in slow motion and increase speed as the coach is
satisfied with the accuracy of the execution of the drill.
Don't proceed to the next progression, if the previous isn't well run on full speed.
Coaching Points:
Precision on every step is the key to a successful option. QB has to run along the LOS
and cannot fade into the backfield.
The read progression of the QB should always be: if in doubt inside first, thus give to the
diveback overkeep and keep overpitch to the pitchback.

Grip drop drill
Purpose:
To strengthen the grip and to improve the feel for the ball.
Description:
Hold ball at waist level with one hand. Bring ball up 6 to 8 inches. Let go of ball completely, then regrip it. Alternate right and left hand. Increase speed as you get better.

QB shouldn't slap at ball, but squeeze it.

Description:
Hold ball at chest level with two hands. Let go with the left and wing arm to right. Turn palm out with thumb pointing down. Lock elbow at full extension. Bring ball back to starting position. Exchange ball to left hand as fast as possible.

There are many drills that could be used that are not included here. Take a few drills at
each workout period and work on these that best suit you and your QBs's abilities. Ibelieve that these are good drills and accomplish much of what you want. Taking
everything into consideration, drills are fine, but you still must practice most those things
you will be doing in the actual game.
Two knee drill
Purpose:
The purpose is to warm up the arm and, at the same time, teach concentration on targetand ball release.
Description:
Pair off about 10 yards apart directly in line with each other, kneeling on both knees.
Receiver will hold both hands up, giving the QB a target to throw to. Don't throw hardand concentrate on target.
Coaching Points:
Check for correct arm movement, high release and follow through.
Equipment:

One knee drill
Purpose:
To develop stronger arm and wrist snap.
Description:
Put your knee on the throwing side down. Place the ball on the ground, grip it with just
the throwing hand, lift it up with one hand, cock it high with two hands, and throw topartner. Exaggerate follow through, pick up grass. Use the arm only. Switch the down
knee for variation.
Coaching Points:
Make sure arm movement is lead by elbow.

Feet parallel drill
Purpose:
Purpose is to warm up the arm and, at the same time, teach concentration on target and
passing technique.
Description:
Pair off about 12 yards apart directly in line with each other. Increase the distance as you
warm up. Don't exceed 20 yards and do not take a step with your foot.
Coaching Points:
QB should not throw with power but only with correct arm technique.

Opposite foot drill
Purpose:
Basic warm up and to teach how to throw off the wrong foot. Simulates throwing offwrong foot while scrambling or sprinting out.
Description:
Right hander with right foot forward in heel to toe relationship. Point the toe in the
direction of the throw. To throw with body, must rotate hips. If thrown with correct
motion, you will be forced forward on the ball of your right foot and weight will followthrough.
Coaching Points:
QB should rotate shoulders and hips as much as possible to get them in a correct positionto deliver the ball.

Purpose:
To work on the complete throwing motion.
Description:
Same as above except step with correct foot. Right hander step with left foot. Point the
toe in direction of throw. Throw and follow through. This motion assures tip of ball will
be up for soft pass. Over-emphasize the follow-through until it becomes an automatic partof throwing motion.
Coaching Points:
When throwing at release of ball, QB should turn hand to outside and palm down.

Circle toss
Purpose:
To work on throwing on the run, like on a rollout pass.
Description:
Run in circle playing catch and reverse the action. Release the ball quickly. As avariation, one man can stand still and the other run around him. Change direction and
switch positions.
Coaching Points:
Shoulders and hips should always be squared up to target on begin of throwing motion.

Purpose:
Improve throwing on the run technique. Plus conditioning.

Run the length of field and back playing catch. Keep 10 yards apart. Release ball quickly.
Work to increase speed.
Coaching Points:

Purpose:
Improve mechanics on throwing the sprintout pass
Description:
Sprint right and left. Throw to other QB or target. Release the ball quickly. Practice
throwback pass also. Get a depth of 6-7 yards.
Coaching Points:
Square the shoulders and hips to target.

Set up drill
Purpose:
To work on dropback in combination with quick but precise release.
Description:
Concentrate on speed on getting back. Get depth, step up and throw to a target. Start at 20
yards and work to 40 with lowest possible trajectory. Throw hard and soft. Use centers ifpossible. May time drops.
Coaching Points:
If with centers - first priority: secure the ball, then quick drop. Second to last dropstep is
shorter, QB should throw immediately after setup step, but never throw off balance.

Individual pass routes drill
Purpose:
Improve the accuracy and timing of throwing to specific receivers on specific passroutes.
Description:
In addition to working on the passing drills that have been mentioned, it would obviously
be to your advantage to throw to an end or a back running any of our individual pass
routes. You should work the most on the routes that are the most difficult for the QB tohit consistently.
Depending on the level you are coaching, you might have relatively big differences
between receivers and how they run their routes (speed/quickness, accuracy). If so, letyour QBs call out the receivers name to better remember the individual style of eachreceiver.
Coaching Points:
Watch for proper timing of QB, don't let him throw off balance just to hit a receiver
quicker, rather work on quicker drop, nor let him throw too early.

Find the open receiver drill
Purpose:
Improve the ability of the QB to scan the whole field and find the open receiver and
automatize his footwork.
Description:
Set the QB up on the goal line. Scatter 10 - 15 receivers from sideline to sideline at varied
depths ranging from 5 yards to 30 (be creative with your spacing). Have the QB to face
his receivers and then the coach, standing behind the QB, will point to one of thereceivers. After telling which one will be live, have the QB to simulate the snap and drop
5 - 7 yards and set to throw. All the while he should be scanning the field looking for the
raised hand of the designated receiver (the receiver should wait 3 - 5 seconds beforeraising his hand). Upon seeing this, the QB will have to get into proper throwing position
and determine the depth. Repeat this until all receivers have had one pass.
Coaching Points:
The coaching points are the proper use of feet to turn the body (making him ever ready to
throw) and the non-stop scanning of the field.

Side to side
Purpose:
Conditioning
Description:
This drill starts with two players standing on the goalline facing each other and about five
yards apart. On the command "GO", both players start running sideways tossing the ball
back and forth until they reach the endzone. They get a quick rest and start back up thefield. Some type of time can be used.
Coaching Points:
Stress good body control
Equipment:
1 Ball per 2 players
Front and back
Purpose:
Conditioning
Description:
Two to six players can be used for this drill. The drill with one player lining up on the
five yard line facing a second player. The second player is standing on the goalline. The
player on the five yard line starts running backward and at the same time the player onthe goalline starts running forward. The ball is tossed back and forth and caught in theirhands. After they reach the endzone, they get a quick rest, switch places and start back.
The coach stands at mid-field.
Coaching Points:
Stress good body control. The players must stay five yards apart when moving downfield.

Equipment:

Mirror drill
Purpose:
To improve the ability of the receivers to stay in front of the DB they are supposed to
block.
Description:
Pair your receivers up between cones (which are about 5-8 yards apart. Let one receiver
be the DB and have the other one mirror him.Let them go for 6-8 seconds, then switch duties.
The 'DB' may turn his hips and do everything to fake the blocker. The DB might take oneor two attempts to pass the receiver, but should step back as soon as he feels contact from
the receivers hands.
Coaching Points:
The blocker should always keep a good balanced body position in front of thedefender, and never cross his feet or turn his hips.
The blocker should have his hands ready to fire out if DB tries to pass him.Equipment:

Stalk block
Purpose:
To teach and improve the runblocking of receivers vs. DBs lined up on them
Description:
Have a receiver line up on a given LOS, and another receiver lining up as a DB about 6 to8 yards deep in front of the blocker.
When the blocker takes off on command the 'DB' starts backpedaling for a few steps,
stops and comes forward trying to pass the blocker.
The blocker locks on the DB and stays on the block until whistle or command.

Coaching Points:
Receiver has to take off hard as if going deep, first to drive the DB deep andsecond to close down on him as quick as possible.
Receiver has to watch the feet of the DB. As soon as they stop he has to slowdown and be ready for a move by the DB.
Equipment:
Shoulder block progression drill
Purpose:
To teach and improve the crack blocking ability of receivers vs. LBs
Description:
Surface
Fit into bag with shoulder and forearm of block.
The blocking surface is the shoulder, chestplate and forearm, keep butt down, back
straight and eyes up.
Strike a blow
6 point stance in front of bag with helmet 6" away from bag. Push off with legsdelivering blow with forearm and shoulder sliding head to side of bag. Roll hips so
beltbuckle hits ground first - eyes up.

Freeze & quick tuck
Purpose:
To work on hand and eye position in catching the ball and tucking the ball away.
Description:
Four receivers pair up with four QB's, facing each other about 10 yards apart.On the Freeze Drill the coach controls the drill with five commands:
1. Ready - alerts QB to get in a throwing position2. Go - QB's release ball to receiver3. Catch - Receiver catches ball and holds that position until next command4. Tuck - Receiver secures ball away, and keeps head and eyes locked into ball5. Toss it back - Receiver tosses ball back to QB
On the Quick Tuck Drill the coach controls the drill with only three commands:

Description:

Purpose:

Firing squad
Purpose:

Description:
Receiver stands in front of net facing QB. The coach stands behind the net and the

then points to one QB which alerts him, he is the one to throw to the receiver. On the
command "GO", each QB starts his throwing motion, but only the QB that wasdesignated by the coach lets the ball go. The receiver catches the ball, tosses it back to the

Warm up drill
Purpose:
These drills can be used before practice to let receivers warm up and at the same time

Description:
Divide receivers into two groups with a coach on both sides of the field to throw balls.
Receivers start in a two point stance and run across the field at half speed. The coach
waits until receiver runs ten yards before throwing the ball. The ball should be thrownwith a good high arch. The receiver catches the ball mid-way across the field and strides
across to the sideline. After each player has gone one time in both lines, the drill is then

TEAM DRILLS
Hustle drill
Purpose:
Conditioning, combined with rehearsal of plays under physical and time stress.
Description:
You need a half football field and all offensive Players for this drill. Spot the ball on the
40 yard-line. The starting unit huddles at midfield and the QB calls the play he got
signaled from the coach. The starting unit lines up according to the play called andexecutes the play. When the ball has been thrown (on a pass play) or the Ballcarrier
breaks through the line, the whole offense (not only those executing the play but
everybody) sprints down into the endzone and huddles around the ballcarrier. Who will
break the huddle with shouting "1-2-3" and the whole team replying "score". Then again11 players form a huddle at the end of the endzone and execute the next play from the
goalline out to the 40-yard-line. Rotate players as much as possible. Do that either a fixed
number of plays and time the total time or do it for a fixed time and count the playscompleted to control if the players really do hustle and if they improve (e.g. less time for
the given number of plays or more plays within the given time)
Coaching Points:
Make sure the plays are still executed correctly and that everybody is really hustling. Geteverybody excited about "scoring" on every play.
Perfect Play drill
Purpose:
Getting all defensive players to take correct pursuit angle on sweep plays and the like.
Also good for conditioning.
Description:
Put a ball in the middle of the field on the 40 yard line. Put a DB on each hashmark atabout the 45 yardline. Line up a defense on the ball defending the nearer endzone call a
lineup, coverage, and eventually a stunt or blitz. Then another player or a coach will pick
up the ball and pitch it to one of the two DB's standing at the hashes, who then will run
with the ball paralell to the LOS towards the sideline an then will turn upfield about 3-4yards inside the sideline. All defensive players will pursue the ballcarrier, and touch him
with both hands at his hips, without stopping him.
Coaching Points:
Make sure the players execute their assignments before they start pursuing (i.e. the DL'sshould penetrate, execute a called stunt. LB's take their correct first steps, etc.). It is also
important that the players really touch the ballcarrier's hip with both hands, otherwise
they wouldn't be able to make a tackle if it were "live".

If players have problems finding the right angle, slow it down to walking speed. (nobody

Punt-/Kickoff-Cover drill
Purpose:
To teach and practice discipline in staying in position on Punt- and Kickoff-Coverage.
Description:
1. Form two lines of players at one sideline in an appropiate split. Put one player asthe returner on the opposite side's numbers or halfway between opposite side's
hashes and the sideline.2. A coach or a QB at the sideline calls out the same cadence as on the puntteam and
throws the ball in a high arc to the returner - you can also have your Punter punt
or Kicker kick the ball to the returner, but if they are not very constant andaccurate it's getting more time-consuming.
3. From each line one player sprints 100% to the opposite side's hashmark and breakdown, while the returner catches the ball and stops.
4. As soon as both players made their breakdown, the coach gives the returner a 'GO'call. The returner runs parallel to the sideline with about 50% speed changeing
directions after 5 to 10 yards.
5. The responsibilities of the cover-players is to keep the returner between them. Theplayer the returner is running to has 'fast-read', he moves fast in front of the
returner. The player the returner is running away from has 'slow-read' he moves
slower behind the returner. When the returner changes directions theresponsibilities switch.
6. After two or three direction changes the returner tries break through between thetwo cover-players who will perform a form-tackle.
Coaching Points:
1. It is important, that the cover-players keep their distance constant while sprintingto the 2nd hashmark and that they arrive there at the same time if possible. (It's a
good idea to pair them up like they are on punt or kickoff).
2. It is also very important, that the cover-players keep their hips and shoulderparallel to the returner and the returner must not get outside either of them.

Teams Line up opposite, parallel with cones, players slide
down line as it becomes their turn to run the ball. Use a 5 yarddeep lane with about a 4yard width. You can run them in a
number of patterns ( by position, by size, but I think the best
is to do offense at random but let the defense choose who willdefend against each player, let the captains of the defense
decide). The offensive player runs down the line and chooses
which hole to run through and the defensive player must reactto his movement and stop him from crossing the line on the
defensive side. Fast players would run to the end, quick the first, agile wherever, if a
tackle is made then the defense scores, if the offense gets the ball past the line they score.
The offensive play must stay within the hole that they choose but may spin or deke in thathole, if the tackler takes the player outside of the lane it is considered a tackle. You can
have both teams run the ball as the defense sometime needs to run and the offense to
tackle. The ball carriers cut to the hole must be decisive with no stutterstepping orreversing direction. This is a drill to practice cutting to the goal line. One coach to watch
the line and call a score and to whistle a play dead, one to signal go!
Coaching Points:
Check for good technique of the tacklers but also of the ball carriers.Make also sure that the ball carriers understand that in full scrimmage they wouldn't have
the time to stutterstep or reverse direction.
If you want to add an extra kink to it give extra points for the defense for forcing and/or
recovering fumbles.

DL
4-pt wave drill
Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to get the players used to stay low and keep their feet movingall of the time. It also strengthens the shoulders and arms.
Description:
Players get into a good 4-pt stance about 2 to 3 yrds apart. The coach stands in front of
them, holding a ball on the ground. The coach shouts out a cadence, and when he movesthe ball they start moving their feet, watching the coach, and shuffling into the indicated
direction, always keeping their hands on the ground. On command the players will sprint
past the coach.
As a variation you can include seatrolls, i.e. every change of direction begins with aseatroll to the new direction.
Instead of a command and the final sprint, the coach can drop the football and have the
players recover the fumble.
Coaching Points:
Feet and hands should always be at a wide base.
Quick change of direction is more important than speed on the lateral movement.
Off the ball
Purpose:
To develop quick reaction on movement of the ball for defensive line.
Description:
Defensive linemen assume good stance on designated line. On movement of football,defensive line comes off the ball with good pad level, sprinting 5 yards. Coach shall call
out different signals to train defensive linemen to move only on movement of football.
Coaching Points:
Proper stance, weight forward, pad level, good key on football.

Purpose:

Description:
Defensive lineman assumes good football position, on coaches command the defensive
lineman steps over dummies, leading with the front foot with his eyes up and pads down,
as lineman comes off of last dummy, the coach throws a medicine ball at DL feet, while
the DL uses his hands to defend himself of ball.

Read the head drill
Purpose:
To teach the DL to read and recognize the type of block of the opposing OL by his first
headmovement, and condition the correct response.
Description:
This is a progression drill,
first have 3 DL at a time lineup facing the coach, who will do the head motions. Have the
DL react to the motions quickly.
The second progression will be to pair up the DL, and a coach standing behind thedesignated DL signaling the kind of block and snapcount to the designated OL. Have the
DL react to the movement of the opposing OL.
The third progression will be to line up one DL to three OL to work on correct reactionon away- and combination blocks (i.e. trap- or double-team blocks). Again the coach will
stand behind the DL and signal block and snapcount. (To extend this you also can include
linebackers.)
Coaching Points:
Make sure DL focus on a point of the head/helmet. Have them react as quick as possible,work more on quickness and correct technique, than on overpowering the blocker.
Read
Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to improve the reaction of the defensive lineman to the
movement of the offensive lineman.
Description:
Set up 3 cones in a triangle about 10 yards apart. Put two linemen facing each other in the
middle between two cones, put a designated ballcarrier at the third cone. The player
facing the ballcarrier will be the defender, the other player the OL. The coach shouldstand behind the DL and signaling the direction and the snapcount. On the command, the
ballcarrier runs in a straight line to the designated cone, while the OL blocks accordingly.
The DL reacts to the movement of the OL, controls & escapes the OL and makes the

Purpose:
Drill to teach the proper technique of playing the outside contain for DE and OLB.
Description:
Mark an offensive line with cones or use a line-strip, have a participating player lining up
as the offensive last man on the line (LMOL) and a RB or WR lining up in the backfield
to run sweeps. Now put the contain man in his position, on command have the backfieldplayer run parallel to the LOS to the contain man's side and only turn upfield outside the
contain man, while the offensive LMOL tries to block the contain man to the inside. The
contain man should force the ballcarrier wide, never letting him get outside.
Coaching Points:
Make sure the defender first gets into the backfield and only when he recognizes that theplay goes wide charges to the outside, always staying outside the ballcarrier. Make sure
he's not to wide outside the ballcarrier, and rather have him give some ground than letting
the ballcarrier to his outside.

Purpose:

Description:

Wave drill
Purpose:
Developing quick changes of direction, and quick reactions.
Description:
Players get into a good football stance about 2 to 3 yrds apart. The coach stands in front

Square drills
Purpose:
To work on footwork on all phases of linebacker play.
Description:
Set up a square of about 6 by 6 yards with the cones.The player lines up at one cone facing away from the square.On signal the player runs to the next cone, like on a straight zone drop, then he runs
forward in an 45-degree angle to the next cone, from which he drops again straight back
to the last cone, from there he runs to the starting cone, on this way the coach throws himthe ball to intercept it.When all players are through, start over except do 45-degree drops and straight-forward
runs.
You also can include shuffle passages.
Coaching Points:
Look for proper foot-technique at the change of direction. This should be a technique
drill not a conditioning drill.

Piano drill
Purpose:
To develop body control, flexibility and reaction to a low block
Description:
LB assume position with outside foot slightly back. On command LB shuffles back two
steps in football position & then shuffles forward to line touching line with both hands tosimulate taking on blocker. Repeat two more repetitions. Then flip to other side.
Coaching Points:
Player must keep eyes up and outside leg back. Chest over knees and chin over toes.
Shed and throw drill
To develop proper position to defeat potential blocker and make the tackle.
Description:
On three men sled LB's assume proper football position one yard from their sled. On

Purpose:
To teach the linebackers to read the block of the offensive lineman and recognize the play
and react properly.
Description:
Align 4 players as three OL-men plus a FB, put two players as DL on the outside two OL

Signal the offensive players their assignments and a snap count.On the snap count the offensive players carry out their blocks and the linebacker reacts
accordingly. Make sure all linebackers get a sufficient number of repetitions.
Start off at half speed, and pick up the speed as players get better.include DL personnel if you don't have enough linebackers.
Coaching Points:
Make sure offensive personnel carries out its assignments correctly.
Linebackers have to be in proper stance and alignment before the "snap".
Emphasize the correct movement while reading the block/play and the correct reaction tothe read play.
Don't allow any sloppiness on either side.
The intensity of contact should be low, correct and quick reaction is the purpose of thisdrill.

Description:
Align two players about 5 to 6 yards apart. On command they jog at each other, when
they meet, the designated defender will thrust his arms out to shed the would be blocker,then they backpedal to their starting point and repeat. When they meet the third time the
defender performs a form tackle.
As a variation you can have them moving down a line and have the defender perform anangle tackle.
Coaching Points:
Check for proper body position on each contact, and on the variation an inside out

Place two cones three to five yards apart on any given line, representing the goalline.
Place one linebacker with his heels on the goalline. The ballcarrier (another linebacker ora runningback) lines up 2-3 yards in front of him, holding a ball. On command the
ballcarrier starts and tries to break the plane between the cones, while the linebacker has
to prevent this.This drill should be run at full speed and therefore not the first tackling drill of the
practice.
If working against the runningbacks you can make it more competetive by keeping scoreand have the "loosers" do some extra sprints or pushups.
