Jane Smith was at her child's pediatrician’s office where she read a newsletter from Harvard Medical School.

It stated:

“According to some surveys, America’s children spend an average of 6 ½ hours a day with electronic media.” (A prescription for better health; go alfresco, 2010)

Since Jane is the mother of a small child beginning grade school, she wanted to know what other factors could play into childhood obesity.

She knew the obvious was eating properly but decided to go over the nutrition pyramid chart so she could become familiar with different food groups.

Jane decided to search www.cdc.gov

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a web page at: www.cdc.gov this website allows you to search updated information from disease and conditions to life stages and populations.

It offers many different publications as they relate to multiple health topics.

Jane realized that the food pyramid changed since she was a child.

“One size doesn't fit all. MyPyramid offers personalized eating plans and interactive tools to help you plan/assess your food choices based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” (MyPyramid.gov Steps to a healthier you, 2010)

If you put the mouse cursor on a specific color (i.e. the color orange represents Grains) it will not only tell what each color represents but it also gives intake/portion information.

Jane still wanted to learn a little more and decided to go to a public library.

Once there the Librarian directed her to the online catalog and typed in the subject of causes of childhood obesity and several books came up.

Jane remembered to use the Dewy Decimal System when locating the books in the library, which made them easier to find.

Since the library has computers she was advised to log in as a guest to Galileo.

Galileo Scholar is a online search engine of the University System of Georgia.

It allows students to view a wide range of databases, journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries and any other resource that may be needed or referenced on multiple subjects as they apply.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY - PREVENTION

Childhood Obesity no doubt is becoming an epidemic in our society.

Experts are linking this problem not only to our environment but also the types and amounts of food we have allowed our children to consume.

It is time to get serious about the overwhelming problem that most children may face.

In our research we will attempt to uncover cultural causes, effects and name a few of many organizations to help prevent Childhood Obesity.

The part parents play towards prevention Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding, with its many benefits for mothers and babies, is recognized as a way to reduce childhood overweight and related chronic diseases.

Several studies provide evidence that any breastfeeding as well as breastfeeding for longer durations protect against overweight in childhood, although the mechanism by which this protection occurs is not clearly understood.

Despite the need for a better understanding of the relationship between breastfeeding and childhood overweight, a number of studies conclude that promoting breastfeeding would be a reasonable strategy for reducing childhood overweight.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY - PREVENTIONObesity is easier to prevent than to treat, and prevention focuses in large measure on parent education.

Children are getting less exercise compared to earlier years. Parents should consider monitoring the amount of time children watch television, play video games and use the computer. Encouraging bike riding and other outdoor activities regularly gives children the exercise needed to help prevent obesity.        Due to the economy , more mothers are out in the working which makes it harder to prepare healthy home-cooked  meals. We are purchasing quick meals that our children can prepare themselves. Usually they are packed with tons of calories, fats and sugars.

Parents should start considering preparing wholesome meals in advance. These meals could easily be packed and stored for future use. This process alone will eliminate those unhealthy quick meals. Replacing chips, candy, cookies and other junk foods with veggies and fresh fruit can ultimately help prevent childhood obesity.

Active parents,  encourages active children

Parents that eat healthy, encourages children that eat healthier.
