Year 3 Team
2016-2017
Mrs Pollock (Head of Year) – teaches 3P
Mrs Oldham – teaches 3O
Mrs Preston and Mrs Nurdin – teach 3PN
Miss Dyer, Mrs Derrick, Mrs Harvey and Mrs Howe – supporting
children from our Speech and Language unit
Mrs Raja – our teaching assistant across the year group
Mrs Lee, Mrs Bidgood, Mrs Tombleson, Mrs Flack and Mrs Fowler
– working with children across the year group
And our school pet, Sheldon!
All the children will get the chance to
take care of Sheldon during the school
year: feeding, weighing and bathing him
On Tuesday 6th September 2016, the year three teachers will meet you and your child in
the small playground, outside the main entrance, and we will then take the children into
their new classrooms.
The children will need to bring the following items with them on their first day:
their PE kit in a named bag
a painting apron/shirt (a plastic/nylon apron or an old shirt)
a reading book
personal headphones (cheap ones to keep in school all year)
a bag
water bottle
At the end of the first day, we will release the children from the classroom, where they
can then meet up with you outside on the path or playground (personal choice).
And
Each child will be allocated a personal locker, in which
they can keep their bag, lunch box, art apron and coat.
Children will also have their own tray, within their
classroom, and somewhere to store their water
bottles during the day.
PE = indoor
Games = outdoor
PE and games days are currently on: Tuesday and
Thursday.
This may change but we will ensure the children know what
day it changes to, if it does.
Indoor PE is dance or gym.
Games in Year 3 includes orienteering, netball, hockey,
athletics and rounders.
The children in year three will have a
slightly early lunch for the first few days, so
that we can share the routine for that part
of the day and help them to get settled,
before the rest of the school come in to
have their lunch.
Children may choose from a meat or
vegetarian option. During the summer term, there will be a school packed lunch
also offered. If children prefer, they may bring in sandwiches from home.
Children do not need to pre-book their lunch choices in advance: a choice is made
at registration every morning. Many have a mix of school dinners and sandwiches
from home, during the week.
Breaks
Before school (arrival from) 8.40am – 8.55am
Morning break from 10.30 – 10.45am
Lunch from 12.00 – 1.00pm
After the first shorter
week, the children will go
straight onto the
playground before school
and then come in to class
in the same way as the
rest of the school: a whistle
will be blown for all the children to stand still and stop talking. Year group cards
are then held up by the teachers on duty. Children walk into school with the rest
of their year group. If there are any issues, please see your child’s class teacher, as
we can always work around teething problems during the first few weeks – for
example, we can find early morning jobs to help your child feel settled in the
mornings.
Buddy System
For our children new to the Hiltingbury schools, each
teacher will organise a Hiltingbury buddy from
within their class. The buddy will help the new child
to settle in to the school and to make new friends.
Giving our children a voice is something that we are passionate about at
Hiltingbury Junior School. Currently there are the following opportunities for the
children:
Hiltingbury Learner – chosen by the class teacher
Pupil Forum – after a small presentation by those who would like to be
considered, a boy and girl are chosen by the pupils from each class
Environment
Anti-bullying
Charity
Digital Leaders
Newspaper committee – chosen by the class
teacher
Timetable
All the lessons are taught within home classes. We do
not organise children into ability groups, with the
exception of some guided reading sessions.
The morning session is 8.55 – 12.00pm.
The afternoon session is 1pm – 3.30pm.
Learning Wherever possible, there is a thematic approach to our
learning: history, geography and science drives the
curriculum.
In Year 3 we learn the following:
Autumn:
In science we learn about light and rocks and soils
In geography we learn about our local place
In history we learn about the Stone Age
Spring:
In science our topics are Healthy Me and Forces and magnets.
In geography we learn about France
Summer:
In science our topic for the term is plants
In history we learn about the Romans
Other foundation lessons = RE, music, art, design technology, PDL (Personal
Development Learning), computing and French
The children have at least one computing lesson a week and
are taught in our ICT suite, where the children have their own
logon name and work at their own computer. We also have
chrome books for classroom use. In order to use the chrome
books, every child will require a google apps login.
Reading During the first two weeks of term the children will be given a
reading test to give us some idea of their current reading ability.
Each child will then be given a reading book suitable for their
reading ability – some from our school resource library and some
from own class book corner or the main school library. Every
child will also be given a READING RECORD. They will keep these
themselves and we ask you to hear your child read regularly (at least 3 – 4 times
per week) and write in these books. These records can include home books as well.
They will read regularly in class and the class teacher will keep their own reading
records and so may not always write in your children’s records. We have guided
reading lessons every day where the children read a range of texts where we teach
the skills of comprehension.
More detailed information about the curriculum can be accessed from either the
main school or Year 3 website.
We have a wonderful school library which we
encourage the children to use. This is open daily from
10.00 – 2.00pm. Children may borrow up to three books at a time.
Each book may be kept for up to three weeks.
Music Lessons
During Year 3, children will have already been invited
to participate in recorder lessons.
From Year 4, additional music lessons are offered.
Please note that music tuition normally takes place in
the morning so children are likely to miss part of an English or Maths lesson.
Weekly reading, spelling and maths (either number bonds or
times tables). In the spring term we have an extended project on France.
A detailed letter regarding homework will be sent home at the beginning of the
term.
Each child will have an orange homework book in which we communicate the
homework that has been set.
We ask for your help to ensure children complete their homework. The children
are given their spellings on a Monday and tested the following Monday, classes can
decide differently to this and so this will be clarified by your class teacher

The following trips and residentials are offered in
Year 3:

House System
Aquamarine ~ Emerald ~ Ruby ~ Topaz
Every child and teacher in the school belongs to one of our four houses
Children are awarded house points as individuals
Within each classroom there is a class tally of House points that have been
awarded during the week
The weekly totals for each House are announced in our Friday Celebration
Assembly
Each House has two Year 6 House Captains
The winning House for each term is given a special House treat
Each term, teachers award a House certificate for one child from each of the
Houses, in recognition of effort and achievement for the whole term
Hiltingbury Learner: We Care
The Hiltingbury Learner is a phrase
which is understood by all the teachers
and children in our school.
It describes the learners we want at our school.
The Hiltingbury Learner shows us all what a good learner is like and helps us
know what we need to do to improve.
There are six different skills that a Hiltingbury Learner needs: Working
together, Enthusiasm, Creativity, Ambition, Reflection and Enquiring
These skills can be applied in any subject and our teachers make us think
about how to use them in each lesson.
There’s always a reason that we could use all of them!
Learning skills can be part of the success criteria in our lessons.
We evaluate our learning and reflect on if we have used the skills.
When they mark our books, the teachers use WE CARE stickers.
Our Hiltingbury WE CARE skills are reported on our end of year report.
Each week, a child’s learning is celebrated in our Friday Celebration
Assembly and are awarded with a WE CARE certificate and badge.
Watch this space for WE CARE learning ladders, so we know the next steps
in using the skills.
Whole school Assemblies
Class Assemblies
Singing Assemblies
Celebration on a Friday (once a term, this includes House certificates and
trophies – Hiltingbury Learner Star, Smart Presentation. Most Improved
Handwriting, Endeavour, Hiltingbury Citizenship, Risk Taker, Lower School
Star and Upper School Star)
Special assemblies happen at Easter and Christmas, which parents are
invited to attend.
Once a year each child will participate in a class sharing assembly, to which
parents are invited
As and when any problems or concerns arise,
please come in to see your child’s teacher,
either before or after school. It is far better
to nip something in the bud, rather than let
it grow into something bigger!
Extra-Curricular Activities
These will vary according to which Year group a child is in, per term and even per
academic year, according to the skill set of the staff!
Currently Year 3’s will have the opportunity to go to:
Choir – run by Mrs Nurdin on a Thursday lunchtime
Board games – lunchtimes
Before and After School Club
Breakfast Club, which is held at the infant
school, and 3:30 club will both be running. There

least two different sports clubs and a street dance club per year
group. The sports clubs, run by R&R sports, include:
Football, rugby, cricket, athletics, netball and tennis

Forms and Letters
Forms, replies to letters, or money that needs to go to the
office, etc. need to come in with the children. They can
then put them in the class register bag, which then gets
handed in to the office after registration.
Keeping Parents Informed

Information evenings – these will vary year to year, but may include e-
safety, maths, information relating to specific residentials, etc. Look out for
information relating to these during the year.
Community Events
During the course of the academic year, we will offer a variety of community
events. These may typically be:
Forest walks
Theatre trips
Bedtime stories – spring and summer
Football match at Eastleigh stadium
Orchestra Day
Watch out for information about what will be offered this academic year
We do welcome parents in to school. If you
would like to help, for example with
photocopying, reading or playing maths
games, etc. then please indicate this on the
separate letter.
HSPTA
Getting involved in the HSPTA (Hiltingbury Schools Parent Teacher Association) is
a fantastic way to meet like-minded parents and give something back to the
school. The committee relies on volunteers. There are various ways you can get
involved, from donating an hour of your time at an event through to joining the
committee. The main events in a calendar year are:
Spooks and Sparks (fireworks night)
Christmas fair
Easter Egg hunt
Quiz nights (for parents)
Summer fair
Please refer to the Parent handbook or the HSPTA website for more information:
www.pta-events.co.uk/hspta
The School Office
The office and telephone line are open from
8:00am until 4:30pm Monday – Thursday
8:00am until 4:00pm on Friday
Children can to go to the office for advice, first aid or if they
are lost or don’t know their home time arrangements.
Message to children from the ladies in the office – “please don’t let
something upset you there is nothing we can’t sort!”
Children leaving school early must be collected by an adult and signed out.
Children cannot be sent out to meet you before the end of the school day.
For safety reasons children should be told that if they are
not collected they should return to their class or the office
rather than wait outside for an extended period. This
applies throughout their entire time with us.
Change of Home time arrangements: -
Please call the office, as early as possible, if you need to change your child’s home
time arrangements. Please note that this is for emergencies only and shouldn’t be
used for changes such as ‘please meet at Bay Leaves as I haven’t finished my
coffee!’ (This is a real example!)
Most items can be paid for via SCOPAY – www.scopay.com if you aren’t already
registered and would like to do so please contact the office for an access code. You can
also check your dinner and after school club balances. In addition to SCOPAY we also
accept cash or cheques and, for the after school club only, childcare vouchers.
We take absences very seriously, so please
call or email the school office by 9:30am
on the first day of every absence. You do
not need to call each day thereafter but we
would appreciate regular updates if your
child is off for more than a few days.
Please also notify the office of absences for medical, or any
other appointments if your child will not be present at
morning or afternoon registration.
If your child is going to arrive at school after morning
registration and would like a school lunch, please let us
know by 10am so that the kitchen can include them in
their numbers.
