Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to welcome you to Hiltingbury Junior School. We are delighted that you and your child will be joining our school community in September. Since taking up my appointment in September 2013 I have felt very privileged to be leading such a dedicated group of staff who seek tirelessly to provide the best possible opportunities for each child in our care. We appreciate that every child is different, with their own unique interests and aptitudes, as well as areas which they may need additional support and encouragement. Our aim is to work in partnership with you to ensure that we can meet these needs as best we can. Our aim is to have a school community where every member feels safe and happy while also ensuring that they are supported on their journey as a lifelong learner. I am so pleased that you have chosen for your child to make that journey with us. I hope to see you at the information evening on 16th July. We look forward to getting to know you and hope that you and your child will spend a happy and fulfilling time at Hiltingbury Junior School. Sam Hunter

Voluntary Help in the Classroom

We are keen to encourage parents to come into school to help in the classroom and to share their interests with the children. Activities could include reading with children, working with small groups, teaching recorders, helping in the library, transporting children to sporting events, accompanying children on school trips. If you have any time, however brief, to give to the school in this capacity we would love to hear from you.

We are required to ensure that adults who have regular contact with children, even on a voluntary basis, have a DBS check. Parents/carers who offer one-off help e.g. offsite visit require a List 99 check in advance of the activity.

To facilitate this, please complete the following form. Once we have received this form we will initiate a DBS check and you will receive an email with a link to complete the DBS form.

DBS Checking & Rehabilitation of Offenders Form

In accordance with statutory requirements and the school’s policy, certain pre-employment checks are conducted for positions involving working with vulnerable groups, specifically children and vulnerable adults.

The information obtained from these checks is used to help safeguard these groups. It will not be used to discriminate unfairly against those with convictions which we consider as unrelated to working with vulnerable groups. Having a criminal record will not automatically bar you from employment or voluntary work with the school.

This process will be conducted in accordance with school’s policy and the Disclosure and Barring Service’s Code of Practice (previously Criminal Records Bureau). The information that you provide will be risk assessed against the requirements of the role.

It is a criminal offence to apply for a position working with children if you are excluded from doing so, by virtue of a court order or exclusion by the Disclosure and Barring Service (previously the Independent Safeguarding Authority).

This applies to any paid or unpaid work that you carry out.

As helping in school gives you privileged access to vulnerable groups, it is an Exempted Occupation under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975.

This means that you must disclose spent and unspent convictions on this form. This includes any driving offences.

Through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), we will make a check to establish any criminal record background. We will do this by asking you to complete a DBS Application Form. Helping in school will be subject to completion of a satisfactory DBS check.

As part of a background check on you, we may also need to request certificates of good conduct / criminal background checks from other countries where you have been a resident or have worked.

Welcome to the HSPTA On behalf of the HSPTA we would like to extend a warm hello. For those who are new to the schools we look forward to meeting you and your children over the coming months. For those who are more familiar with the HSPTA, thank you for all your support to date and we hope this leaflet provides a useful update.

Hiltingbury Schools Parent Teacher Association (HSPTA) is a registered charity. Our aim is to raise money to support Hiltingbury Infant and Junior Schools achieve their ambitions and objectives.

The HSPTA is run by a group of parent volunteers with the support of the leadership teams and teaching staff from both schools.

Every year the HSPTA raises in the region of £15,000. This money enables the two schools to develop their resources or commission special projects to enhance the children’s learning.

Last year the money raised from the HSPTA contributed to the refurbishment of both school libraries. These spaces have now become the heart of the schools; inviting, welcoming places where children can develop their love of books and learning.

In addition to running a number of events over the last year, behind the scenes we have been working on a new website for the HSPTA (detailed overleaf). This is a really exciting development for the HSPTA. We hope the site will simplify and improve things for you as a parent.

With best wishes for the coming year, The HSPTA Committee

We need you! Getting involved in the HSPTA is a

fantastic way to meet like minded

parents and give something back to

your child’s school. It is fun, social

and rewarding.

We appreciate that everyone leads

busy lives so there are various ways

that you can get involved with the

HSPTA; from donating an hour of

your time at an event through to

understand that not everyone can

help out behind the scenes; coming

really, really appreciated.

Ways you can help the HSPTA

Become a Class Rep The aim of the Class Reps scheme is to have a central point of contact within

each class; a facilitator to enable new ideas and feedback to reach the

HSPTA but also a quick and easy way for us to disseminate information out

to you through the classes. This is a new initiative that we will be

developing in line with our new website. Get involved to help shape how

the Rep role works.

Join the Committee Are you interested in joining the Committee? There is lots of scope to have

fun in the planning and delivery of our family friendly fundraisers. The

Committee currently consists of the following positions: Co-Chairs,

Treasurer, Co-Secretaries, Teacher Representatives alongside roles in

Sponsorship, IT & Communications and Fundraising Support. The

Committee meets once every half term (currently on a Wednesday or

Thursday evening at alternating schools) with additional sub-committee

meetings and event specific meetings throughout the year. The Committee

meetings are open to all parents so you can dip in and out or attend

regularly depending on what works best for you.

You can sign up to our Golden Draw Would you like to raise money for the HSPTA and also be in with the chance of winning a prize for you and your family? Taking part in the prize draw costs from as little as £1 per month and it is an ideal way to support the schools in turn enhancing our children’s learning even further.

How does it work? The draw takes place once a month, and there’s an extra annual draw in August. It’s open to all parents, friends and staff of Hiltingbury Infant and Junior Schools (entrants must be over 16), and it costs £1 per number, per month. Payment is by standing order (form on reverse or you may set your SO up on-line through your own bank). You can buy as many numbers as you like! Half of the monthly total raised goes to our schools, half to the prize fund.

How much could I win? Currently, our monthly prize stands at approximately £30, and our annual prize at just over £288. If, however, 100 more people purchased just two numbers for £2 per month, we would raise £200 extra every month. Out of that fund, £100 more would be raised for our schools, and an extra £100 would go towards both the monthly and annual cash prizes. With almost 700 children at both schools, participation – and prizes – could be even higher!

You have got to be in it to win it! Please complete the entry form on the reverse of this page and hand it in to either school office. Good Luck!

Good Luck!

School Governors

Our Role

Alongside the head teacher and staff, the governors are committed to the provision of an excellent and varied experience for all our pupils, ensuring they meet their potential, learn effectively and achieve high standards across a diverse, challenging and inspiring curriculum.

Governors help the head teacher and staff set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. The day-to-day running of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher and staff who create a caring, supportive and stimulating environment for the children to learn and achieve in, and the governors help with the strategic direction of the school. In addition, the governing body has a legal responsibility to:

- ensure the national curriculum is followed - oversee the school’s budget - monitor the condition of the school buildings and grounds - ensure that Special Educational Needs are met

Our approach

The Hiltingbury Governors approach to their role is one of commitment, honesty and openness in the performance of our responsibilities. We pride ourselves in the integrity of our members and the commitment shown in performing our duties. As governors, we support the staff and head teacher, balancing constructive criticism with positive comment, always striving for the best outcomes.

Types of governors

Governors are appointed to provide strong links between the school, parents and our local communities. There are four categories of governor, appointed by different bodies that have an interest in the school. These are:

- Community Governors - Local Authority (LA) Governors - Parent Governors - Staff Governors

We welcome governors with a variety of skills and from all walks of life – an open mind and a willingness to be involved are more important than particular qualifications.

Meetings

We meet every half term as a full Governing Body, and have two committees (Resource, and Curriculum & Standards) that meet once a term. Most governors also have special responsibility for a particular subject or area within the school, and will attend occasional meetings for that subject as needed.

Contacting us:

The best way of contacting any of the governors is through the school office, but if you see one of us at the school, do not hesitate to introduce yourself. We are always interested in feedback and comments – good or bad – as they will often help us to improve even further!

Autumn 2015 Launching www.pta-events.co.uk/hspta

In September we will be officially launching a new HSPTA website. The site will enable us to achieve many things all ‘under one roof’ including: on line ticket sales, on line volunteering, social media and paypal integration, on line nearly new uniform shop and lots, lots more. The site provides a platform for us to more easily establish Class Representatives within the Schools. This is something that we have been keen to develop and now have the technology to progress. The aim of the Class Reps scheme is to have a central point of contact within each class; a facilitator to enable new ideas and feedback to reach the HSPTA but also a quick and easy way for us to disseminate information out to you through the classes. If you are interested in becoming a Class Rep, please email us at [email protected]. Alternatively complete and return the Parent Information Sheet attached. As parents and carers, it is also possible for you to share your contact details with your Class Rep(s) and other parents/carers within your son/daughter’s class on the HSPTA’s website. Under the Data Protection Act the Schools are not permitted to pass on your contact details to other parties (including ourselves), so the initiative must come from each individual member within each class. We hope this is something you will find valuable. We will be sending home letters at the beginning of term with further information on how to register your details on the site. The website is being funded through a mixture of sponsorship and the Parent Business Directory. Please visit the site for further information and contact us at [email protected] if you would like to discuss advertising opportunities with us further.

number of events that take place over
