ITM Architecture
IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agents: monitor applications
Tivoli Management Server: Hierarchy of linked Tivoli Servers that gather data from Agents and report back to the main "hub" Tivoli Server
Tivoli Enterprise Portal: Provides browser and desktop. It is user interface for monitoring, management and administration
Tivoli Data Warehouse: Performance data repository for management reports

Agents and Agentless
ITM has the following types of agents Operating System Agent – provides basic OS monitoring. It is the base agent
Application Agents – monitor application such as: Database, Exchange, .Net etc.
Provide application specific monitoring for different types of applications.
 Universal Agent
Universal Agent is a monitoring agent you can configure to collect monitoring data from different sources. It allows you to create a custom monitor agent for your own specific application and integrate with ITM.
IBM Software Group
Universal Agent accepts Data Providers from different sources
File Collects information from sequential files
Socket Provides support for resource connected through TCP/IP or UDP
API Provides a set of API calls that can be used from applications, batch files, scripts, or console commands
Post Accepts console commands
HTTP Monitors Web sites
SNMP Includes SNMP components and trap support
ODBC Integrates data from ODBC data sourcesSCRP Script DP allows to integrate data from custom scripts

Integrate Tivoli Business Service Manager (TBSM) for executives to alert line of business status
Allows executives to drill-up to business impact view or drill-down to resource details
Integrate Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) for administrators with different skill level
Allows customers to define policy
Provide events correlation engine for complex situation or rules

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Distributed Systems
Proactively manage Windows, UNIX, Linux, OS/400 and Tandem systems (disk space, memory usage, processes, CPU utilization and more) from single pane of glass
Swiftly pinpoint, analyze, resolve performance and availability problems/bottlenecks
Availability Solution for Multi-Platforms
Maximize availability and performance of critical business services
Reduce potential for manual error; enable IT to focus on most critical tasks
Benefits

17
Situation Multiple thresholds linked by Boolean logic for determining complex problems
Allows for an automated/reflex action in response to violation

18
TEP (single user interface) customizable user interface for centralize control
A single UI for your environment but customizable for different types of users.
Each user can customize his view to see what he wants immediately without the need to
drilldown.

Expert Advice Reduces Time/Cost of Problem Resolution
Initial Cause
Current State
Expert Advice
Take action to fix
the problem
Expert advice provides detailed description of problem and recommended recovery actions
Helps enable IT operations to resolve known errors and frees up subject matter experts to
work on more value-added activities
Can be customized to capture expert knowledge, or may be linked to web server
Capture support knowledge of your critical systems
- - Remove human dependency
- - Faster recovery and correct escalation

Predefined situations (correlation policy) – predefined situations that include preset thresholds, sampling intervals, boolean logic, and expert advice
• Product-provided
situations out-of-the-box •Includes multi-metric
• Situations allow for
correlation of metrics to avoid event overload and
false alerts
• Expert Advice and automated actions speed
resolution
Predefined situations help you quickly deployed
Define your own situation (correlation policy)without using any programming language

Out-of-box Failover
Agents can be configured to connect to an alternate TEMS if the primary is not available.
Automatic „migration“ if connection cannot be established
 No automatic re-migration
