PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The rough weather on Monday has created a significant holiday workload with several trees now requiring removal. On the positive side our buildings remained dry and safe.

The windy weather has highlighted the conditions that our bus drivers face daily and I would like to thank the bus companies for the great job they do in getting our students to school safely.

Hopefully the holidays will provide families with an opportunity to rest, recover and prepare for a busy term 3.

The community consultation meeting for our school rebuild will be held on Monday 21

st July at 7:30 in the Library.

Concepts, ideas and proposals can be presented at this meeting. Remember, this is your school, your contribution and ideas are valued.

I would like to wish Sean Fitzpatrick a well-earned long service leave. Matthew Haugh will be taking over Sean’s duties for term 3.

On Friday P-6 families will have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress during our formal Parent-Teacher interviews. 7-12 Students will receive their reports today and their term 2 will finish at 2:30pm on Friday.

And remember:

SEAN FITZPATRICK ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL We are just beginning our Kinder to School transition process. Our school classrooms hosted last week’s Kinder meeting for parents to make themselves familiar with what it mans to be ‘school ready.’ Over the next few months many visits and activities will take place between the Timboon Kinder and our school. These include buddy sessions, where our current preps work with kinder students, parent information meetings, kinder classes in our prep rooms and student orientation visits. We are also offering guided tours around the campus for parents who are considering enrolling students here in 2015. The dates and times for these tours are: Thursday 24th July at 9:30 am, Tuesday 5th August at 9:30 am, Friday 15th August at 9:30 am and also on Open Morning 27th of August at 9:30. To take part in a tour simply ring the office on 55983381 and register for a tour that suits. If you know of any families who are not currently attending Timboon District Kinder but may be interested in taking part in our transition could you please let them know about the tours. Our Prep to Grade 6 reports were distributed home on Tuesday 24th June. Written reports will provide families with an indication of what your child has achieved, what they will next be working on and what both school and home can do to support this. Many parents find it difficult to understand that for a child achieving at their grade level they will receive a ‘C.’ This means that most students performing well, learning and understanding the work that is introduced to them a grading of “C’ is expected. Higher or lower gradings are an indication of working above or below the expected standard for that year level. In other words ‘C’ means they are right on target. In the report envelope there will also be a letter indicating the time allocated on June 27th for you to attend a Parent teacher interview. THIS IS A PUPIL FREE DAY. If you find that the time doesn’t suit or you are unable to come in on that day, please contact the school so alternate arrangements can be made. Families with a student in year 6B will have their interview day on Friday 18th July as Mr Venn is unavailable this week. We have had a number of incidents at the morning bus stops, while students are waiting for the bus to arrive. These include: teasing, daring to run over the road, pushing, not waiting back at the safe distance and general misbehaviour. It is the responsibility of parents to supervise your child while they are at the bus stop. For more information on this please refer to our Bus Manual on the website. While on the bus topic, please ensure that any changes to your bus arrangements are accompanied by a note. Without this in place we will follow whatever the current arrangement is. We do not accept a child

telling us that this is what they think is meant to happen on this night. School starts at 8:55 daily. Our staff begin their supervision 15 minutes prior to this. If your child arrives at school before this time they will not be supervised. ANDREA TAYLOR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Friday Night Rock Climbing.

We will be running several Friday night indoor rock climbing trips during Term 3 as we have done in previous years. The cost will be a minimum covering a school discounted entry to “The Rock” indoor rock climbing centre in Geelong and 20 seater bus hire. The school can supply harnesses and may be able to supply climbing shoes, depending on size. Last year the cost were $35 per person, it may be possible for parent volunteers, particularly females could come as a member of staff. These are trips for students who enjoyed the rock climbing on the year 9 camps and would like to do more. These trips were originally an extension to our year 9 program but they are in no way compulsory. Other students and/or parents who would like to try indoor rock climbing are encouraged to come along and would be welcome. Younger students would need to come with an older sibling or parent who is prepared to belay them. Places are limited on the bus so it will be first in best dressed. The bus will leave Timboon as soon as practical after the school buses about 3:40 pm. We will stop at Waurn Ponds where a variety of takeaway franchises are available for an early tea. We climb from about 6 to 8:30 pm, and return to Timboon about 10:30 pm. The proposed dates at this stage are Friday 25th of July Friday 8th of August Friday 22nd of August

GAINING A PLACE IN GRADUATE-ENTRY MEDICINE – At the University of Melbourne, medicine is a graduate-entry degree, with applicants first needing to complete a degree including prerequisite studies (eg the University of Melbourne’s B. Biomedicine or the B. Science). Selection to this degree is based on the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT), usually sat in the final year of the undergraduate degree, performance in the undergraduate degree (including completion of prerequisite studies) and an interview. Students attend an interview if they meet the other two criteria. Each criteria is weighted equally by the selection panel. Information:

www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/study-here/md/application_process. As this is a postgraduate qualification, there is no need to sit the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test. (The UMAT is now only required in Victoria by applicants for Monash undergraduate medicine). Two other graduate-entry medical degrees are offered in Victoria, at Deakin University in Geelong and Monash in Gippsland (Monash also offers the only Victorian undergraduate medical degree). From 2017, at least 50 of the 75 domestic places in the Monash Graduate Entry MBBS will be reserved for students who have completed Monash University’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science. The others will be for students who have completed the following Monash degrees: Bachelor of Biomedical Science (including double degrees), Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Science (dependent on the completion of designated units). Selection of students for the Graduate-entry MBBS will include a multiple mini interview; GAMSAT will not be required. Deakin does not specify any undergraduate degree to be completed first, but applicants will need to be equipped to answer questions in the GAMSAT and complete an interview. MONASH UNIVERSTIY NEWS –

Monash VTAC domestic first preferences increased by 4.7% this year (+635), while under-graduate offers of places increased by 3.5%, with 10,866 offers being made.

New courses at Monash for 2015 – Berwick campus will offer the Bachelor of Nursing, Clayton will offer the Diploma of Higher Education – Science, a new City location will offer the Bachelor of International Business, and Peninsula will offer the Bachelor of Education (Honours)Primary and Secondary Health and Physical Education.

Monash offered 5,868 scholarships in 2014 – up 37% on 2013.

From 2015, all 4+ year Monash degrees will give an honours qualification. This can lead on to a one year Masters’ degree, with only one year being full-fee.

Selection to the medical imaging degree is expected to include an interview for the 2015 intake.
