PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Congratulations to the high number of students (16 in total) that recently entered an art work in to the WRAD Competition. This year’s competition saw 90 entries (a record number) from a range of students across South West Victoria. The WRAD Art In Schools Competition provides a unique and powerful opportunity for young people to explore and discuss important subjects which impact on lives and communities. The school environment creates a ‘safe place’ to bring these topics into open forum. The feedback from students, teachers and families has been overwhelmingly positive. The project has enabled students to share and support each other and understand the complexities of addiction and mental health issues as well as the opportunities and options for support and recovery. I would encourage you to visit the exhibition over the next month at the Outlaw gallery, Fletcher Jones, Warrnabool. Shelby Gristede (pictured left) achieved second place overall for her work Jessica Treble (pictured right) achieved the staff choice award.

Shelby Gristede: ‘Symbolising Hope & Community’ (pictured above) In my artwork, I used symbols that reflect hope, community and connectedness. The hands represent family, friends and community. The trees: growth and life. The birds: freedom and escape. While the people linking together communicate the support we need from each other to stay safe, well and loved.

Uniform: All students are expected to wear the correct uniform.

As we approach winter it is important that students remain warm

and comfortable. There are a number of uniform items available

to support this, including: a warm waterproof school jacket, a

school beanie and scarf. All items can be purchased through

LOWES in Warrnambool. Layby options are available. School

beanies and scarves can be purchased through the school

canteen. Alternatives to this are not acceptable; follow up from

your classroom/form group/ Year level coordinators will occur on

a regular basis. The school is always willing to support families in

need – if you require support please contact the school.

Attendance: Attached to this newsletter is information highlighting the importance of school attendance for all students P-12. Parents are required to ensure their child attends school and provide an explanation for their child's absence from school. Where possible, parents should inform the school in advance of upcoming absences. We appreciate your ongoing support in promoting and ensuring your child’s attendance at school. Weekly Building Update: The school building works continues to take shape with rapid progression of the new 7-12 building. The retaining wall has been put in place, with further steel arriving this week and the building is on track to be completed by November. The construction of the commercial kitchen will take place over the school holidays.

Congratulations to all our students who recently competed at the Western Region Cross Country event. A special congratulations to Heidi Stansfield and Emily Morden who have qualified for the state finals. Congratulations to the students who participated in the TRI-SPORTS and all the best to the Netball and Soccer teams playing tomorrow.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Well done to our students who participated at the regional cross country championships in Warrnambool on Monday 5 June, 2017. We were represented by eighteen excellent young people who tried their best. In fact Heidi Stansfield and Emily Morden will now go through to the state championships as they both finished fifth in their age groups. Well done girls. Our VCE students will be sitting the General Achievement Test (GAT) next Wednesday, 14 June. This will run from 10am to 1.15pm. Students studying a Unit 3 and 4 VCE subject are required to attend this test. We encourage students to do their best as the test is used as a moderation tool for Year 12 results. It is important that students complete all sections of the GAT. All Year 10 and 11 students should by now have been given feedback on their exams held two weeks ago. Some questions to ask your children in review their exam performance are:

What did you do well to prepare for the exam?

What could you do better in preparation for the next set of exams in Semester 2?

How did you feel you performed working under pressure? What did you do in the exam that set you up to perform in this way?

What was your grade for the exam? Which aspects of the exam did you do well on? Which aspects of the exam do you know you need to work on for next time?

(The million dollar question) Out of all of those ideas which one do you need to get started on first and when can you do that?

If you have any feedback regarding the provision of exams could you please let me know. I would really value feedback on whether you feel they will continue to help improve the academic rigour of our school? Whether there are any other steps or advice you might need to help assist your child with exam preparation? Also, did we communicate effectively enough about the implementation of exams and their purpose? Thanks in advance for your feedback. Dan Walker, Secondary Assistant Principal

Engineers without Borders – Year 7 Water for Life Workshop The Year 7 science classes experienced a thought provoking design activity last Thursday. Engineers without Borders (supported by staff from the Origin Gas Plant) presented a workshop based around designing water filters. Their aim: to turn VERY muddy water into clean water. The twist was that each group was a different country with different resources to reflect challenges faced by different countries. Here are some of our reflections. In the real world each country has a different way to get clean water. – Thomas Dai I now have a better understanding of other countries and how hard it is to get clean water. – Sophie Gleeson Now I’ve seen this activity I might kind of want to be an engineer. – Poppy Haugh Today some people from Monash University and the Origin Gas Plant came to talk to us about Engineering. The different types of engineering were just some of the things we covered. We used cheese cloth, charcoal, fine sand, coarse sand and fine gravel to make our filter. – Lucy Jones I learnt how to filter water with rocks and sand. There are different types of water you get from filtering. The water in Australia has to have a turbidity under 5 to be able to drink. - Tom Archibald Having Engineers without Borders come really opened my eyes to the more unfortunate countries like Ethiopia and Vietnam. They have unclean water and a lot less materials to filter water with than we do. They have to filter water by hand. I also realised that the countries that are sympathetic to others will give what they can to help. – Mali Glendinning

Rooster Bob finds a new home Mr Bob left on Monday 29th May. He went to the Van Rijthoven’s and is very happy with his new home. He has met some ‘good looking’ girls that he likes. Sharni said Mr Bob sleeps next to Mother Fatty on the perches. By Sharni Thank you to the Van Rijthoven family for giving our rooster a new home.

LIBRARY NEWS

From 1st July 2017, the library will no longer be mailing overdue or reservation notices to library members aged under 18 years. Families and individuals can prepare now for this change by advising library staff of an email address or mobile telephone number to enable notices to be delivered by email or SMS. Ask our staff to help you do this now, so you will continue to receive notifications. Emailed notices have an added advantage of sending a reminder notice 3 days prior to your items falling due (excluding the 1 week loan items). The email also has a direct link to the website to renew your loans if you choose. Both emailed notices and SMS notices ensure timely notification of your reservations being available.

Classroom Helpers Program

At Timboon P-12 School, we are very fortunate to receive great support from our parents, many of whom volunteer their time to assist in a variety of our classroom programs. To support parents who are assisting in our classrooms, I will be conducting a Classroom Helpers Training Program over the next few weeks. This program will be run over two sessions, which will be held on 14th and 21st June. These Wednesday morning sessions will be held in the Library, beginning at 9:30am and finishing at 10:45am. The focus of this program is to help prepare parents to assist in our classroom programs, and it will provide you with many tips and strategies that will enable you to work effectively with students at school. We will look at how children learn to read and write, as well as discuss a variety of activities that can assist student learning in these areas. These tips and strategies can also be used at home with your own child/ren. If you are interested in assisting in your child/ren’s classroom, then it is recommended that you have participated in this program. If you wish to participate, could you please complete and return the attached form to school. Regards, Matt Haugh P-6 Sub School Leader.

Classroom Helpers Program I would like to participate in the Classroom Helpers Training Program, to be held on 14th and 21st June. Name _________________________ Phone_________________________

After their visits to a processor and supermarket, the Year 4 TAP into Farm Science students travelled to see where their Paddock to Plate journey could begin. Students visited the beef and prime lamb property of Richard and Marilyn Gristede where they learnt about farm maps (Marilyn Gristede), healthy pastures (Jo Groves, Whitehouse Fertilizers), beef farming (Nick Maddison, Landmark and Richard Gristede) and sheep and wool (Steve McKenzie). At Ash and Michelle Gristede’s, students investigated animal health (Tom Walsh,The Vet Group), water recycling (Ash Gristede), the dairy plant (David Case, DeLaval) and effluent recycling (Michelle Gristede and Andrea Vallance). Students were challenged with questions issued by the guest presenters after their workshop sessions and enjoyed a FM Milk courtesy of Sungold. Thank you to everyone involved – what a wonderful way to learn about the science around us!
