IsDegenerativeDiskDisease(DDD)Really a Disease? For many years, patients have been told they were suffering fromdegenerativediskdisease and there was nothing they could do to relieve the symptoms of this disease. It has now been discovered, that degenerative disc dis-ease is not a disease at all; it is a consequence of putting too much pressure on a certain disc or a group of discs. It has been renamed “CompressiveDiscSyndrome”.Asadiscdegenerates, itwillusuallybesymptomfreeforthefirstyears and sometimes even decades. Eventually, the spinal disc will degenerate or compress to the point that it begins to bulge or herniate. At that point it may put pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves, which often leads to pain, either at the sight of the disc or “downstream” where the nerve ends. An example of this would be sciatica or radiating leg pain. The problem is not in the leg, theproblemisinthelowerbackcausedbytheirritantofpressureonthespinalnerves.Whenthis happens, it affects nerve function. A person may lose strength in certain muscles, lose sensa-tion at that nerve level (numbness), or lose proper function of the organs the nerve is attached to. Mosttraditionaltreatmentsforbulgingdisks,stenosisandsciaticafailinthelongtermbe-cause they address the symptoms and not the cause of the condition. A degenerated disc is a physical problem and it requires a physical solution. There are no pills or injections that can create a postural balance in the body, which is necessary to reduce the nerve pressure. It requires stretching, unique postural exercises, soft tissue manual therapy and spinal adjustments.
