TIDBITS® EXPLORES THE RAINFORESTS

by Sarah Bates

It’s something every first grader learns about, and it’s something we should all be concerned about--the Earth’s rainforests. This week we take a look at the wonder and beauty of one of Earth’s most amazing biomes.• Earth’s rainforests are a natural wealth of re-sources and wildlife. Of all the earth’s many spe-cies, over half are found in the rainforests alone. That’s over 50 percent of Earth’s species in an area that takes up only 2 percent of Earth’s surface. Esti-mates project more than half of the rainforest could be destroyed by 2030. • Rainforests are located in three major areas of the world: Indonesia and Malaysia, Central America and the Amazon River Basin, and Africa, all areas along the equator. Because of this, the average temperature in the rainforests never drops below 64º F (17º C).

THE RAINFORESTS (continued):

• Did you know that rainforests are responsible for turning over a large portion of Earth’s carbon dioxide? The many plants in the rainforest help turn carbon dioxide into 28 percent of the world’s oxygen.• Rainforests get over 80 inches of rain each year. Because of this, many plants have adapted to prevent the large amounts of moisture from adversely affecting them. Some plants have what could be called drip spouts that help excess water run off. Other plants have an oily coat that also keeps excess water at bay.• Rainforests can be broken down into four major layers. Everything begins at the forest floor. Most of the floor is clear of plants because very little sunlight penetrates that far down. Any leaves or animal waste that fall to the floor decompose very quickly due to the lack of light and high humidity levels, leaving the area bare.• The second layer is the understory, which gets more light than the forest floor and is home to many plants and animals, such as snakes, jaguars and trees that can reach up to 60 feet (18 m) tall. It is very humid in the understory, and there is little air movement.• The canopy layer is next, formed of 98- to 131-foot (30-40 m) trees that comprise a thick canopy that covers everything below. A majority of the rainforest’s life lives in the lush and plentiful canopy layer, and some species never leave it. • The final layer of the rainforest is the emergent layer, which is made up of even taller trees that grow anywhere from 147 to 262 feet (45 - 80 m) tall.• Because most food resides so high in the cano-py, rainforests aren’t suitable habitats for humans. Most tribes that utilize rainforests for food live outside the forest in nearby areas.• The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s larg-est biomes. It covers 1.4 billion acres (5.5 million km2) of the Amazon River basin and supports more than 300 species of mammals, including two species of freshwater dolphins.• Although they are some of the oldest in the world, most of Southeast Asia’s primary rain-forests are expected to be completely destroyed within the next decade. This means animals like the Bengal tiger, king cobra and the Javan silvery gibbon will all lose their homes. As of 2008, there were less than 2,500 silvery gibbons in the wild, and some estimates show that at least 50 percent of the gibbons’ population will disappear in the next decade, putting this creature in danger of extinction.

¥ It was British mathematician, historian and phi-losopher Bertrand Russell who made the following sage observation: “If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappi-ness of others, we could have paradise in a few years.” ¥ Do you know why camels are artiodactyls, while humans aren’t? It’s because dromedaries have an even number of toes (two) on each foot, while we have an odd number. ¥ According to a poll conducted in the United Kingdom, 80 percent of male college freshmen and sophomores in that country have never done a load of laundry in their lives. ¥ At weddings here in the United States, it is com-mon for the bride to toss her bouquet to determine who will be the next to be married. At weddings in Finland the custom is a bit different, though the outcome is the same: There, the bride traditionally wears a golden crown, and at the reception she is blindfolded and spun around. Then all the single girls in attendance dance around her while the bride, still blindfolded, tries to place the crown on one of them. It’s believed that the lucky girl who ends up wearing the crown will be the next to wed. ¥ It takes about 2.5 pounds of grapes to make a single bottle of wine. ¥ Ever wonder where the phrase “cool as a cu-cumber” came from? It’s actually an established fact that the interior of a cucumber can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the ambient air temperature surrounding it.***Thought for the Day: “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction.” -- Albert Einstein

“As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti...” This lyric from a rock song just hints at the majesty and wonder of Africa. Get ready to learn some wild facts as we adventure through the savanna.• In African folktales, the hare is a trickster. The tales of the African hare migrated with the slaves who told them in America and are thought to be part of the basis for the Br’er Rab-bit stories by Uncle Remus. The African hare is an herbivore that lives among the wooded savannas.• Bongos aren’t just drums. They are a type of antelope as well. Bongos are the largest and heaviest of forest antelopes. They live in the rainforests of West Africa and are nocturnal by nature. The male bongo will actually live on his own except during mating season. It is the females and calves that form the bongo herds. An adult bongo can weigh anywhere from 500 to 900 pounds (227 to 408 kg).• An elephant never forgets! Likewise, once you learn about an African elephant, you’ll never forget it. Unlike most four-legged crea-tures, an elephant’s legs are placed directly under it. An elephant’s skin can be up to an inch thick in some places. And elephants drink up to 50 gallons (189 liters) of water each day to stay hydrated in the hot African sun.• Let’s not forget about our other African giant, the hippopotamus. Did you know that a hippo-potamus can live up to 50 years? The hippopot-amus is the third-largest living land animal and can weigh up to 31 tons. In ancient Egypt, the hippopotamus was revered as a deity. There is also another type of hippopotamus that lives in Africa, the smaller pygmy hippopotamus of West Africa, which is listed as an endangered species.• You might not think of penguins when you think of Africa, but the dark continent certainly has its fair share of our fine-feathered friends. You can find this semi-aquatic creature along the islands off the coast of Southwest Africa.

You may not realize it, but July 24 is Amelia Earhart Day. July 24 was chosen because it’s the birthday of perhaps the most famous female aviator in history. Earhart’s story ended tragically when she became lost in the Pacific Ocean in 1937 on her voyage around the world, but she is still celebrated for her bravery and pioneer spirit. As an investor, you can learn a lot from Ear-hart’s career. Here are a few lessons to consider: Plan ahead. After a lengthy analysis of Ear-hart’s final flight, decades after it occurred, a noted aviation expert came to one succinct conclusion: “poor planning, worse execution.” Yet on her successful flights, Earhart was known to have produced, and followed, detailed flight plans. As an investor, you, too, must plan your journey toward your financial goals. First, you need to identify your destination, such as a comfortable retirement. Next, you must create a “map” to reach your goal, in the form of a de-tailed financial strategy based on an investment portfolio tailored to your risk tolerance and time horizon. And along the way, you must chart your progress via regular reviews of your investments’ performance. Use the right “tools.” Some sources have noted that, on the fateful flight, Earhart did not appear to fully understand how to use her plane’s direc-tion-finding loop antenna, which at the time was a new technology. If you don’t fully understand the “tools” — that is, the investments — you need to help achieve your goals, you may run into difficulties. Always know exactly what you’re investing in and why you’ve chosen those spe-cific investments. Without this information, you could end up with investments that are either too risky for your comfort or too conservative for your goals. Follow your vision. On the day they disap-peared, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were scheduled to land on Howland Island. Un-fortunately, it was a cloudy day; some research-ers speculate that the clouds’ dark shadows on the ocean surface may have camouflaged Howland and confused the aviators. As an inves-tor, you need a clear view of what you want to accomplish in the long term — and you need to avoid having your vision “clouded over” by short-term events such as price drops and recessions. Put sufficient “power” in your portfolio. Many aviation scholars and researchers believe Ear-hart’s plane simply ran out of gas before she could land on Howland Island. Does you portfo-lio have sufficient “fuel” to help you go the dis-tance? Specifically, do you have the right mix of growth- and income-oriented vehicles to power you toward college for your kids, a comfortable retirement and your other goals? If you’re not sure, you may want to work with a professional financial advisor to get the assistance you need. You probably will never try to circumnavigate the globe in a small plane. But if you can emulate the best features of Amelia Earhart — such as her courage, perseverance and faith in the future — while taking steps to help focus on what you can control, your investment journey may be rewarding. IT TAKES TWO by Bonnie St. ClairLaurel without Hardy? Bert without Ernie? Hall without Oates? They just wouldn’t have been the same. Join Tidbits as we share stories behind some famous “people pairs”

and how they managed to discover one another.• In the original story, Batman met the boy who would become Robin in 1940. Dick Grayson was an eight-year-old circus acrobat, the son of trapeze artists. When a gangster who’d been extorting money from the circus sabotaged the riggings, Dick’s parents fell to their deaths. Batman investi-gated the crime, and he became fond enough of the boy to become his legal guardian (as his alter ego, Bruce Wayne). He instructed the youngster in the ways of fighting crime

and dubbed him Robin, the Boy Wonder.• Cherilyn Sarkisian dropped out of school and moved to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actress. At 17, she met Sonny Bono at Aldo’s Coffee Shop. Bono worked for music producer Phil Spector and was able to get Cher, as he called her, work as a background vocalist. A songwriter at heart, Sonny had peddled his tunes without much success. But when he and Cher became romantically involved, the pair recorded his tune “I Got You, Babe,” which hit number one on the pop chart and made stars of Sonny and Cher.

• One day in 1881, Dr. John Watson happened to rent a room at a lodging house at 221B Baker Street in London, England. His roommate was a mysterious chap named Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was quite secretive about what he did for a living, but eventually confessed that he was a private detective, which (at the time) was a rather rare profession. Fascinated by Holmes’ tales and the way he employed logical deduction to

solve cases, the two became not only friends but also coworkers and confidantes. • That levelheaded, sturdy housewife Blondie wasn’t so very domestic when she first appeared in the newspaper comics section some 70 years ago. Blondie Boopadoop was a carefree flapper back in 1930, when she met Dagwood Bumstead, the young play-boy son of a railroad tycoon. In fact, Dagwood’s millionaire father opposed his son’s re-lationship with Blondie, and threatened to cut off his financial support if they continued seeing one another. The elder Bumstead grudgingly gave his blessing to the marriage, but he still nixed his son’s inheritance, forcing Dagwood to become one of the working

class.• Clyde Barrow was born into extreme poverty in rural Texas. As he came of age, the Great Depression ravaged the nation, and the angry young man turned to burglary and robbery as a means of survival. One December evening in 1929, he was visiting a friend when he heard a clatter in the kitchen. “That’s Bonnie Parker,” the pal told him. “She’s making hot chocolate. Go say hello.” It was love at first sight; the pair chatted into the wee hours of the morning. The next day, Bonnie hit the road with Clyde and the pair

machine-gunned their way to infamy.• Daniel Wesson was born to a family in Worcester, Massachusetts. At 18, he was apprenticed to his brother’s shoe manufacturing company, but grew dissatisfied and joined up with another brother, Edwin, as a journeyman gunsmith. In 1852, Daniel met Horace Smith, a fellow gun enthusiast who’d learned about firearms while working at the

National Armory in nearby Springfield. They formed a partnership with the goal of marketing a lever action repeating pistol, and the

two became well known as Smith & Wesson.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Don’t Fall for This Free LunchHave you seen the ads? They offer us a free lunch at a posh loca-tion while we attend a seminar on financial investing, with experts to advise us. Don’t be taken in by it. It could be the most expen-sive lunch you’ll ever have. The Securities and Exchange Commis-

sion and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority just released a report detailing the investment scams that are becoming rampant against seniors. While the study concentrated on Southern states, there’s no doubt this is happening

across the country. The scam works like this: When you think you’re going to an in-vestment education seminar that includes a free lunch at a nice place, you end up facing high-pressure sales tactics and misleading claims. You might be pushed to open new accounts, sign complicated docu-ments (without being given the opportunity to read them or take them to your attorney for review) or buy investment products that aren’t suitable for you (or that

might not even exist).Because we’re seniors and the top-ic is important to us, we’re prom-ised high returns on our life sav-ings with safe investments and excellent liquidity for a financially

secure retirement. Here are two ways to educate your-

self against investment fraud:¥ Go to AARP (www.aarp.org) and look at its online videos. Search for investment fraud and “The Lure of Money.” While you’re there, take the Investment Fraud IQ test

to see how you score.¥ Go to www.sec.gov and search for “free lunch report” for the whole 46-page study. It includes examples of the ads that are used in these scam free-lunch invest-ment seminars. If you have ques-

tions, call the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy at 800-SEC-0330.

Here’s a scary thought: Research shows that 78 percent of us have received one of these free-lunch invitations.

If you’re just getting into his music, you’ll know him as Yusuf Islam, but if you’ve been a fan for years, Cat Stevens is no stranger to you. Sit back and relax as we fill your brain with facts about this legendary musician.• Steven Demetre Georgiou was born in Lon-don, England, on July 21, 1948. His father was from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and his mother was from Sweden.• Georgiou developed a talent and love for music at an early age. At 15, he convinced his father, who owned and operated a restaurant, to buy him his first guitar for £8.• Georgiou was also a talented artist and spent one year at the Hammersmith School of Art where he considered becoming a cartoonist. While at Hammersmith, he developed his first musical pseudonym and went by Steve Adams when he performed.• Georgiou’s second stage name is his most memorable. In 1966, he recorded his first demo, under the name Cat Stevens. His demo immedi-ately began climbing the charts and before long, Cat Stevens was touring with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. He was just 18 years old.• Over the next two years, he continued writing music, releasing his 1967 album “New Masters.” The album contained the song “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” which was most recently made famous by artist Sheryl Crow in 2003. It was also covered by Rod Stewart.• The hard-hitting pop star lifestyle took its toll on Stevens in 1969. After contracting tuberculosis, Stevens was admitted to the hospital with a col-lapsed lung. The illness kept Stevens in the hos-pital for months and out of public life for a year.• After his illness, Stevens’ musical sound under-went a notable change. He signed with a new re-cord label in 1970. He released two more albums, but it was the second, “Tea for the Tillerman,” that truly gained Stevens international success. “Tea for the Tillerman” went on to sell three million copies and was No. 206 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.• Stevens nearly drowned in 1976 while swim-ming off the coast of Malibu. Stevens considers this incident the beginning of his spiritual conver-sion.• It was his brother David that brought Stevens a copy of the Qur’an for his birthday. Stevens was immediately drawn to the book and as he read it, began his personal conversion to Islam.• After his conversion to Islam, Stevens only performed one more time before taking a 25-year hiatus from music.• Yusuf Islam married his wife Fauzia Mubarak Ali in 1979, and together they have five children.• Yusuf released his most recent album, “Roadsinger,” in May of 2009.

The Dog Days are here. It’s hot, Independence Day is well past, and Labor Day is a long way off. Here are a few books that can alleviate the summer doldrums: “Head to Tail Wellness: Western Veterinary Medicine Meets Eastern Wisdom” by Stacy Fuchino, V.M.D. Alternative medicine has gotten sidewise looks in the past from vets and owners alike. It’s fine to go to an acupuncturist yourself, but what good does it do for a dog or cat? Dr. Stacy Fuchino, who has augmented his degree in veterinary medicine with studies in Eastern medicine and Feng Shui, argues that it does a world of good. He presents case studies from his own practice of pets with chronic illnesses that improved following treatment with a combi-nation of Western medical treatment and East-ern practices. “Cat-echisms: Fundamentals of Feline Faith” by Ellis Weiner & Barbara DavilmanThis is a fine example of the pet-persona genre, which many cat lovers probably will find endearing. “Cat-echisms,” as the title suggests, bases its style on the Catholic method of outlin-ing fundamental beliefs and principles through a question-and-answer series. This is a small book, short enough to read in one sitting or just to leave on your coffee table. “Stay” by Allie Larkin Finally, a bit of fiction to chew on. “Stay” takes a fur-laden twist when our heroine, Savan-nah, impulsively buys a puppy off the Internet. (I won’t go into all the reasons why Internet pet sales are wrong, but the author does take pains to point out many of them.) If you’ve ever owned a big dog, you’ll immediately identify with Joe and Savannah’s first day together. The slobbery wake-up call. The harrying first walk with an excited canine. The big pile of poo on the carpet. Yes, it’s not your typical romance novel. But it’s definitely worth a read.
