Cook BookQ: I have an early edition of the WatkinsCookbook. It is in excellent shape, and I amcurious about how much it might be worth.— Marilyn, Kissimmee, Fla.

A: The Watkins Cook Books were published

as a marketing tool by the J.R. WatkinsCompany of Winona, Minn. One of theearliest and most popular editions waspublished in 1926. It featured a dark-greencover had a stapled binding, and contained64 pages of recipes. It currently retails in the$30 to $60 range, depending, of course, oncondition. Other popular Watkins publicationsinclude the 1936 Cook Book, $27 to $48; the1945 World War II collection, $28 to $49; andthe 1952 “Hearthside” Cook Book, $34 to $61.One of the better price guides is AntiqueTrader Collectible Cookbooks, a reference byPatricia Edwards and Peter Peckham (Krause,$21.99). It lists values for more than 1,000cookbooks in addition to interesting tidbitsabout authors, publishers and foodcompanies. You can check out the

Web site of Edwards and Peckham atwww.OldCookbooks.com.

• • •Q: Can you tell me the name and breed ofdog that was the logo for RCA Victor? — Dora,Surprise, Ariz.

A: The dog was a type of terrier, although theidentification of his exact breed varies. Whatwe know for certain is that the animal wasborn in Bristol, England, in 1884, and wasnamed Nipper because he liked to “nip”people on the leg. In 1898, two years after hisdeath, Nipper was memorialized in a paintingtitled “His Master’s Voice” that featured himlistening intently to a talking machine. Twoyears later, the painting was registered as atrademark by the Berliner record company, and later used by both HMV in the U.K. andVictor in America. It is one of the most famouscorporate logos ever.

• • •Q: It is my understanding that you providedealers and collector names. I would beinterested in obtaining same. — Marvin,Wiggins, Miss.

A: I provide general information aboutcollectibles, but only in this column. I do notpublish lists or make appraisals.

Cat’s Litter Box Looks Like Mud Bog

By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My female cat “Sandy” will drink a quart of watervery quickly. Then for the next couple of days, her litter box looks like sandboxafter rain storm. It’s a big mess, and looks like a mud field. What’s wrong withher? — Fred in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR FRED: I can’t tell you what’s wrong from here, but I can tell you totake Sandy to the veterinarian as soon as possible and describe to him or herexactly what you told me. If Sandy has any other unusual behaviors or symptoms, such as seeming lethargic, irritated, hiding out for long periods and so on, tellthe vet this as well.

Frequent urination is a sign that a serious illness may be developing. It’s oneof the symptoms of feline diabetes, for example — although only the vet canmake this diagnosis. Often, the illness can be managed, but only if your cat getsprompt medical attention. If caught early, Sandy might only need minimalchanges in how she’s cared for — a change in diet, some medication and morefrequent checkups.

If you’re worried about the cost of care, please mention this to the vet whenyou go in. Something can be worked out so that Sandy can get the help sheneeds. Many states and cities offer assistance to senior citizens with pets, sothat pets can get annual checkups, needed shots and tags at little or no cost.

Besides the vet’s office, the best places to find information about discountedpet care include senior community centers and the local Humane Society.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is SVT? Whatcauses it? What is heart ablation?

My grandmother, my mother and I all havehad SVT episodes. I required heart ablation.— J.P.

ANSWER: “SVT” is short for “supraventriculartachycardia.” Tachycardia is a fast heartbeat.“Supraventricular” indicates that the fast beatarises in the upper heart chambers, the onesabove (supra) the ventricles, which are theheart’s pumping chambers. Those upperchambers are the atria.

SVT covers many different conditions. Sinceyou spoke of “episodes,” I assume you hadPSVT, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia— fast heart-beating that comes on suddenly, doesn’t last too long and stops abruptly.

Causes for PSVT can involve the little electricgenerator that delivers a small jolt of electricitythat initiates the heartbeat. Or it can comefrom an extra pathway that the electricimpulse takes on its way to the lower heartchambers. Both conditions can be there frombirth, and both can be a family affair, onecontrolled by genes. It sounds like yours is thegenetic kind.

Medicines often can keep supraventriculartachycardia controlled. Your treatment, ablation, is a permanent cure. Literally,“ablation” means “a taking away.” In the caseof supraventricular tachycardia, tissue thatinitiates the fast heartbeat is destroyed. That’s

Fast HeartbeatSometimes aFamily Affair

done with a catheter — a soft, thin tubeadvanced into the heart from a surface bloodvessel. The catheter emits radio waves. Whenit reaches the place that gives rise to the fastbeats, the radio waves are turned on, andthat bit of tissue is erased, ablated.

Ablation is successful in preventingresumption of fast-heartbeat attacks in a highpercentage of cases. I trust your procedurewas successful.

The booklet on heartbeat irregularitiesdiscusses tachycardia and other heartconditions. Readers can order a copy bywriting: Dr. Donohue — No. 107W, Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check ormoney order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6Canada with the recipient’s printed nameand address. Please allow four weeks fordelivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Every evening, my

wife and I take a long walk. It’s our dailyexercise. I attract mosquitoes, but she doesn’t.Why? Is there a medical explanation for this?— L.P.

ANSWER: People who emit more carbondioxide than others draw mosquitoes to them. The mosquitoes are attracted by it.

Mosquito magnets also have othercompounds on their skin that enticemosquitoes. Cholesterol on the skin seems todraw them to a person. Skin cholesterol hasnothing to do with blood cholesterol. Uric acidand lactic acid on the skin are otherattractants.

Mosquito repellent will keep you free ofmosquito molestation.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a carrot eater

and have been so for a long time. Someonetold me that people who eat lots of carrotsget cancer. Is that true? — S.T.

ANSWER: That “someone” has confused a

message about beta carotene, a substancefound in carrots (and other foods). It’s aprecursor of vitamin A.

Smokers should not take beta carotenesupplements. It raises their risk for getting lungcancer. You don’t have to worry about eatingfoods with beta carotene, including carrots.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer

individual letters, but he will incorporate them inhis column whenever possible. Readers may writehim or request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Green leaves justdon’t get the attentionthey deserve. Usually,we “ooh” and “aah” inthe fall at the emergingsplashy colors ofcrimson and goldenleaves on trees andbushes. But there isinfinite variety in the

green and the gray of those leaves on trees, vegetable plants and bushes that continually grow, shade and add a natural umbrella in gardens andparks in the hottest of summer days.

Pick a handful of fresh leaves and sproutinggreens from your trees, shrubs and vegetablegarden, and look at them with your kids through amagnifying glass. Observe their intricate patternsand delicate design, and then print them onto fabricwith a zany technique using a hammer from thetoolbox and your child’s muscle and energy.

First, collect the fresh green leaves. Ferns froman indoor floral bouquet also work well. Then, decide what you would like to print, such as a plainwhite or cream-colored cotton fabric T-shirt, anapron, potholder or library book bag.

Cover a hard, flat surface such as a picnic table

Hammer Natural PrintsWith Garden Leaves

or wooden breadboard with plain paper bags. Setthe fabric to be printed on top. If using a T-shirt ortote bag, place a sheet of wax paper or cardboardinside the shirt or bag.

Arrange a leaf or fern on the fabric (secure it inplace with small pieces of masking tape, if youwish), and cover with a sheet of wax paper.Hammer over the wax-paper-covered leaf until itscolor has been absorbed into the fabric. It’simportant that you hit every part of the leaf torelease the naturalpigments. Remove theleaf or fern and waxpaper to reveal thenatural image. Colorsvary in intensity, soyou may wish to testseveral varieties on apiece of scrap fabricfirst.

Repeat the processwith additional leaves.Try it with a fewflowers too, and seehow the beautifulcolors from natureappear. Label each

print with the name of the tree, plant or flowerusing a permanent marker.

Note: The natural pigments may eventually fade.Wash fabric in cold water.

Extra Idea: You also may use paper instead offabric to create lovely stationery, gift tags orbookmarks.

Hot-Starting Busch Is Now StrugglingAugust 6 - 12, 2009

Kyle Busch’s Nationwide Seriesvictory at Gateway InternationalRaceway was his sixth of the season.Three times he has won at the Sprint

Cup level. Busch also has won two of his seven Camping World TruckSeries starts to date.

At age 24, Busch has won more races, by far, than anyone else inNASCAR over the past two seasons.

Yet Busch maintains a precarious position in the Sprint Cup point stand-ings with seven races remaining in the regularseason. Twelve drivers will advance to the Chasefor the Sprint Cup. Busch currently ranks 10th,and his edge over 13th-place Greg Biffle is only13 points.

In the first 19 races, even though he has wonthree times, Busch has finished in the top fiveonly four times and six times in the top 10. Bycomparison, the points leader, Tony Stewart, has15 top-10 finishes.

“Results side of it, I think we’ve been a bigfailure,” said Busch. “We’re struggling here tomake ourselves comfortable for the Chase.

“Last year was a great year. It just seemed likeeverything fell into place. It was easy: easy torun up front, easy to win races. It just felt weirdbecause it was just too easy.”

Busch began the 2008 Chase as the favorite. He had won eight times during the first 26 races. In the Chase, Busch opened with finishes of 34th,43rd and 28th, leaving his championship hopesin ruin. He wound up 10th.

Perhaps this year Busch, from Las Vegas, canget hot at the right time.

“Through the year, the regular 26 races (in2008), everything was just easy,” he said. “Thisyear has been a struggle. Everything has been sohard. It’s just so hard to gain any track position. It’s hard to finish a race in the top five, let aloneeven in the top 10.

“It’s just pathetic. We’ve got to do somethingto change our performance where we can at leastpass cars and go to the front instead of being inthe front and letting cars pass us and trying tosalvage a finish. It’s not what wins races.”

Q: Last weekend, my husband and I found a housethat we fell in love with. It’s a bank-owned property, and has been vacant for some time — meaning that ithas sustained some vandalism and the exterior lawnand bushes are overgrown. I’m sure with a little TLCwe can restore it to good condition. Do you have anytips for first-time buyers making home improvements?— Laura in upstate New York

A: The most important thing at this stage of the home-buying process is to tread carefully, get as muchinformation on the property as you can, and make sureall your i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. And, eventhough you’re in love with the property, be prepared towalk away if the sale terms can’t be agreed upon or ifthe scope of the needed repair work rises past the costand effort you’re willing to put into it.

I recommend you work with a real-estate agent, ifyou haven’t contacted one already. You’ll also want toretain a building inspector and a real-estate attorney, once you decide to make an offer on the house.

What’s LoveGot to DoWith It?

The agent can lead a walk-through of the house soyou can view it from top to bottom. Agents will discloseany known issues with the property, like water damage— although a problem with bank-owned properties isthat agents often don’t know any more about the housethan you can learn in the walk-through. So bring anotebook, a flashlight and a camera to record good andbad impressions of the house.

A good agent also can look for similar properties foryou and will help you through the entire buying process.

A building inspector does a more thoroughexamination of a house and its systems — plumbing, electrical, heat and structure — and provides a reportprior to the sale. Many problems aren’t seen during awalk-through, so this report can be invaluable whennegotiating the sale. And a real-estate attorney canprovide additional advice — and ferret out informationabout the house that may not have been disclosed.

Finally, take a realistic assessment of the home-improvement work that the property will need. Do youhave the time and skills to do the repairs yourself? Doyou have the funds to hire a contractor for complexjobs? Can the repairs be staggered over time?

In short, take the time to research the house and thelocal market as thoroughly as possible, and don’t letlove blind you to possible problems.

You love spending time in the great outdoors, especiallycamping out. You’ve spent many a summer’s day campedout in the woods, hiking on the numerous trails and relax-ing at night by the fire. You can’t go camping every day,of course, but you can still enjoy evenings around the firein your own backyard.

There are a number of avenues you can take to create a

Relaxing By The FireBy Tresa Erickson source of fire in your backyard. The simplest is to buy a

chiminea or a portable mesh fire bowl. All you need to do isset up the structure in a safe area in your yard away from allflammable materials and you’re ready to go.

If you would rather have something more permanent, youcan build an outdoor fireplace in your backyard. Be aware, though, that this project will take time and money and mayeven require the help of a professional.

If time and money is tight, you may want to considerbuilding a fire pit in your backyard. You can hire a profes-sional to install the fire pit for you, or you can tackle the jobyourself. If you take this route, your first step is to select anappropriate site for the fire pit. For the best results, it shouldbe several feet away from all plants, trees and structures. This will reduce the risk of fire and soot and ash damage.

Depending upon the laws in your area, you may need toget approval from the city and perhaps even a building per-mit. Contact local officials for guidelines, and if you needto move gas or power lines, you will most definitely want toconsult the appropriate professionals for that.

Next, you will want to prep the area. Start by markingthe outline of the fire pit, making sure it is large enough tohold a fireplace grate in the center with a couple of feet oneach side. Remove all vegetation within the outline and trimany overhanging tree branches. Dig out six inches of soilfrom the pit and rake the remaining soil smooth. Line theouter edge of the pit with moss rock, firebrick or some othertype of fireproof edging.

If drainage is a concern, you may install a drainpipe. If

not, go ahead and line the bottom of the fire pit with an inchor two of gravel or sand to prevent it from becoming muddywhen it rains. Insert the fireplace grate in the center of thepit. This will hold the wood in place. Add some decorativecover to the pit, such as lava rock. Just make sure it is heatresistant.

Your fire pit is now complete. If needed, you may dressup the area surrounding it with plants. Just make sure thereis nothing too close to the fire.

Just think. With a fire pit, you can enjoy a fire outdoorson any day of the week. You can even pitch a tent if youwant to recreate the camping experience.

A retired Marine Corps gunnery sergeant by the nameof Sally Drumm has hit on something worth noting. Shebelieves that writing about our experiences in the mili-tary is a step on the way to healing.

Four years ago, Drumm started Milspeak, a series ofno-cost creative-writing workshops that bring veteranstogether to put their stories — memoirs, if you will —down on paper.

There’s also a Web site: www.milspeak.org. Checkout the stories in the Writers Gallery. They include aMarine who worked in the military mortuary in Iraqand one who writes of his experience in Desert Storm. There’s a story by a teenage girl who has been raised inthe military, another by a Korean War veteran and doz-ens more. All are worth reading.

Check the Milspeak Memos, writing from veteranslike us. Volumes 1 through 3 detail the Vietnam Warexperience, taps and tattoos, and sea stories.

Additionally, there is an invitation to submit work.Milspeak is accepting submissions for Volume 4 of theMemos until Oct. 3. The overall topic is essays, mem-
