2017 Garden Thyme

Mark Gorczyca: Mark is with Bruce Ewing Landscaping and has a Master of Landscape Architecture from BSU. He will explain how his landscape design process has evolved over nearly 20 years of experiences as a land-scape designer. The “inventory & analysis” phase of a project increases your knowledge of the site and pro-vides useful tools for better designs, how site features and design elements are implemented, and what makes a good finished product. A “hardscape” discus-sion will explain how elements other than plants add to the garden. Ryan Baker: Ryan opened the Country View Greenhouse

in South Whitley 15 years ago. He is a consistent vendor at

the Columbia City Farmer’s Market and currently serves on the

board of the market. Ryan is constantly on the lookout for

something new, unusual or different to grow. Recently he has

expanded his succulent offerings. He will be speaking about

new plants and shrubs for 2017, as well as several other rare,

unusual and underused plants.

John Woodmansee: John is the Purdue Extension Educa-

tor for Whitley and Noble Counties. One of his favorite topics is

trees, including proper selection, planting, pest management,

and pruning of woody ornamentals for the home landscape.

Jack Caster: Jack is a full time faculty member at Ivy

Tech. He became serious about gardening the past five years

and now has close to a dozen gardens throughout his yard.

Last year he began successfully growing vegetables and flow-

ers in late winter. He will speak about proper soil, moisture,

little or no cost small “greenhouses” as well as how to transi-

tion the small plants into larger flowerbeds.

Jasmine Hiss: Jasmine was born with a shovel in her

hand! The entire family loves plants and all that they entail.

She began helping her parents at the Columbia City Farmer’s

Market at the age of 6 and progressed to growing her own

flowers, then making and selling arrangements of cut flowers

for the past eight years. Jasmine is a student at Indiana Tech.

She will show us how to keep beautiful arrangements in our

homes from early spring through late fall.
