Here we have two of the Forbidden Angels, Jesa and Amber being sexy with Cory Bloom’s Yella 2010 Road Glide. Fitting that the shot is taken

next to the paint booth at Custom Paint Special-ists. Chris Cope put the Yella and tribal scheme on the bike and made it “pop” from the normal Road Glide population. You can reach Chris at 515-971-4579 or fi nd him at 2905 Delaware in Des Moines. Th e Forbidden Angels Promo Girls can be reached

Here we go into October already. It seems that the time just fl ies by anymore and summer is gone, fall is in full swing, and winter is just around the corner. I think that we accomplished all that we wanted to this year. We hit some great events, saw some cool scenery, got to see lots of old friends, got to meet many new friends, and we even got married in Soldier, without much of a hitch. Labor Day weekend on the west side of the state had beautiful weather on Saturday and on Monday, but Sunday, not so much. On this day, some of the biggest rains, heaviest winds, and green skies adorned the wedding day. We changed the plans for the ceremony and Steve and Dee let us get hitched right on the stage in the Midway. Thanks to everyone that braved the weather and came out to enjoy

the day with us. We certainly had fun! One of the best parts of the deal is that we can now have a wedding anniversary party every year at the Midway Tavern! Another person that we

would like to thank is Leo at the elevator in Soldier. We camped on the

east side of the grain bins on the old ball fi eld. Leo is gracious enough to let people set up campers and tents, and with the torrential rain, the bottom was a mess. Leo and crew have a bit of work to get the ground back in order after the truck and camper traffi c. Leo, thank you for being a gracious and understanding host.

I would also like to thank some great friends of mine in Kimballton for putting up with me and helping me out so very much. The Hansen clan has done more for me over the years than I can even put into words. Ken and Barb, Troy

and Cammy, Tyler, McKenzie, Angie and Brian (Petersen) and Peanut and Trav. This is one of the hardest working families that I have ever known, but always have time to help a friend. They do commercial and residential mowing; trucking, farm, and Angie runs a salon and keeps my locks pretty, but they still have time for one another and for friends. Thanks guys for all that you do for us, it is greatly appreciated. K&T Enterprises and ShAnTe Salon Rock!

As we are getting into the colder weather, don’t forget to do fall preparation on your bike. If you are going to keep riding, keep a close eye on that tire pressure with changing temps, keep the fuel conditioned just in case it does turn instantly nasty, and get the two wheeled loves of our lives ready for the cold. Be safe out there this fall!

October brings the last few remaining Fun Runs of the year, as well as the Toy Runs that are getting rolling. Get out and enjoy the two wheeled life while you can, you never know when it will be done for the year. While you are running around, don’t forget to stop at the sponsors of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa and tell them we sent you. They keep this train rolling month after month, and ensure that you have a magazine to put in your hands and enjoy. On that note, we would like to thank all the sponsors of the magazine. They are all listed on page 10-12 in the Biker Friendly Listing, so check out the list, and stop by as many as you can.

Roll it, live it, love it.

I can’t say that I grew up around motorcycles, but they were certainly present in my life. My fi rst real vivid memory of motorcycles was a red Honda that my dad owned when I was in fourth grade. I spent a lot of miles on the back seat and would pretend to take the controls while it was parked in the garage. I vaguely remember a blue Harley that took up space in the garage once, but I don’t think he ever got it running. A few years later it was a black Yamaha with a Windjammer fairing. This wasn’t too long after the movie Purple Rain came out, so I used to pretend I was Prince (Shut up, I like Prince! So what?!?!)

Many years will go by before I got back on two wheels. It wasn’t until I was 14 or 15 that I ended up with a Honda Spree moped. It lacked power and I did everything I could to change that. By the time I was done, it could do 42 instead of 25. In hindsight, I suppose that is how I blew it up.

In my mid 20’s I picked up a Suzuki 650. I rode that thing everywhere. I only owned it for one summer, but I probably put 10,000 miles on it. Being young, foolish, and broke, I ended up having to sell it. Another decade would pass before I got another bike. It seemed like every time I put a leg over it, some fool was right there trying to run me off the road. I only kept that bike for a month before it was sold. Let’s call it “maintaining family sanity.” Yeah, I know that’s an oxymoron.

A few more years went by and my wife, Heather, attended a funeral for a coworker that happened to be a motorcycle enthusiast. Several bikes were part of the procession; Heather rode with a friend that day. When she got home, the fi rst thing out of her mouth was, “You

need a bike!” Well, who am to argue, right? So, I bought a 2000 Yamaha Vstar 650 Classic from one of my coworkers and “made it mine”. Two years later, in the October 2009, I bought my very fi rst brand new vehicle, a 2009 Yamaha Vstar 950 (I just can’t seem to break the 1,000 mark).

In the fall of 2009, I heard about Thunder in the Sand in Conesville and decided that I needed to check it out. A friend and I packed up our bikes and took off. That

weekend is nothing but a drunken blur (good thing I have pictures) with a killer hangover on Sunday, but I was hooked. I fi nally found my kind of people. We made a return trip to the spring 2010 Hog Wild Rodeo. All summer long I’m dying with anticipation for the 2010 Thunder in the Sand and I’m on Facebook looking at the invited people list to the event. I see a name I haven’t heard in over 20+ years. Just a few minutes of looking at pictures from the profi le,

I knew it had to be the same guy I knew so many years ago. A quick Facebook message confi rmed I’d just found my friend Harvey Hunter (TRMI’s central Iowa Event Correspondent).

Harvey was extremely instrumental in my introduction to Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa. After we’d done a little catching up, Harvey started talking to me about TRMI and suggested that the magazine could really use someone to distribute in

northern Iowa. A few months later, Vernon just happened to be in Mason City attending the ABATE Motorcycle Expo; after introductions and some get to know ya stuff, I joined the TRMI family. It’s been a hell of a ride. I’ve met some of the best people I’ve ever known; not only in the TRMI family, but also at different events across Iowa.

Iowa used to bore me and I always longed to move away, but after rolling two wheels through the scenic byways of northeastern Iowa, logging a couple hundred miles through the Loess Hills in southwestern Iowa, attending rallies in Conesville, Algona, and Soldier, I think I might just stick around a little longer. I guess Iowa isn’t quite as boring as it used to be, I just hadn’t found the right people or places.

Heather and I both work full time and have two daughters; a 14 year old still at home and a 21 year old. We’re usually fairly busy from day to day, but we try to get the bike out on the weekends. I’m slowly introducing (corrupting?) Heather to the world of bikers. She has been helping me with the magazine deliveries and has even offered suggestions on ads. We enjoy a local bike night from time to time and one day she might even join me at a rally. Time will tell. Until then, I look forward to seeing you on the road.

I sit in the dark at 7:50 in the evening, bumming as our fl eeting summer races towards end. It seems as if it takes

forever for Sturgis to arrive and then afterwards time fl ies by. But there are still some opportunities to take advantage of. This last weekend I was able to go back and forth between the Conesville Redneck Revival Rally and the Davenport antique swap meet. Both were good times with many friends to see. The swap meet seemed to be well attended but I couldn’t fi gure out how to get that old Indian by my wife if I took it home. It would be a bit harder to hide than bringing home a new gun. Conesville, while not near where it used to be in attendance, had a considerable increase in people and bikes

again and some excellent music Saturday night with Dallas Hendrix and then Dallas Moore. Sunday everyone including the kids had a great time at the mud bogs. “ F” Man Charlie becomes Uncle Charlie while the kids are there. What a hoot.

I was thinking over our Sturgis trip, especially the one day of the week where we usually take the Devil’s Tower loop. Six of us took off under a few clouds but were hoping for a dry ride. We stopped in Hulett, Wyoming, to see if some of our vendor friends were around and as we were getting ready to leave, the sprinkles started. As we made the corner at the Tower it started to pour, and then the hail began. At that point in the ride the visibility was about nil and man, does hail hurt when it smacks you in the lip. We coasted to the side of the road. No turnoff; no tree; we just had to ease onto the shoulder and hunker down until the hail quit. It’s always amazed me how seemingly every year out there we can count on getting hailed on whichever way we go. After a bit, it quit hailing and we continued at 40 mph in the driving rain. Karla had said that when we pulled off she couldn’t see if there was a shoulder or not. She just trusted that I was leading right. Talk about blind faith. The blind faith that Karla had in following me in the storm was because she knew I had her well-being in mind. Even though her glasses were fogged and she could only see my taillight, she knew that I was with her and would try to watch out for her to the best of my abilities. Wherever we are - and usually she doesn’t have a clue, as she is severely geographically challenged - she knows that we have a destination in mind and the goal is to arrive together and safely.

It should be that way with our trust in the Lord, only stronger. He does know the way and he cares for us way more than humanly possible. The Bible tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. He will never leave nor forsake you. God can lead us on roads we do not know exist and where we see only obstacles he can safely show us the way. Psalm119 tells us that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path. What a Road Captain we have in this life and the next if we just put our trust in Him.

Note: CMA has its annual Changing of the Colors Rally in October at Iron Mountain, CMA’s headquarters in Hatfi eld, Arkansas. Every fi ve years it is an international rally and this year we have people coming from 27 countries. If you are looking for a destination and a chance to ride the Ouachita Mountains in October, check out the details on the website listed below. The rally is open to all.

Blessings, Mark

99 Counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 47 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties in Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month I will revisit each county as a featured article. I will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of touring curiosity for our state of Iowa.

Jones County Iowa

Doing it with friends is always better than doing it on your own, and this adventure was no different! Jones County offered our own Eryka and me the best of what eastern Iowa has to offer, hills, curves, history, great food, cold drinks and amazing people. There might have even been a brush with the law. Then again, when isn’t there tomfoolery when Pinky and I gather?

Jones County is of average size and came to be in 1837. They have 20,000ish residents and is named after an early Senator/

Congressmen George Wallace Jones.

We came into the town from the southeast corner on X64 and flowed right into Oxford Junction. They have had some intense flooding over the years but they also have a really cool old DX Station that now doubles as the town hall.

We followed Hwy136 north to Cascade which technically only grazes Jones County so we quickly jumped onto Hwy151 and headed

south to Monticello. What we

found in

Monticello

would be worth the trip even if you weren’t on a bike! We

were “Welcomed to tummy heaven” at Darrell’s, a family tradition. We walked

in like we owned the place and were lucky enough to be charmed by Darrell the owner, his daughter in law Nicole (our server), and Bill who is retired, a biker, and one heck of a bowler! People like them are why we live in Iowa, and the food isn’t half bad either.

Our thirst was getting the better of us so we did what any two ladies on the loose would do; we flagged down the long arm of the law to see where we could find a drink at such an early hour. We were guided just down the road to the east to Whiskey River. This place is under relatively new ownership and strangely also has camping and a twenty-four hour fitness center, now that’s full service!

The day was young so we headed southeast on Hwy38 to Pictured Rocks Park, which is breathtaking, then onto CO Road E23 to get thru Amber. One of my favorite people in the world is named Amber so we had to drive through. We quickly jagged south X44 to connect with Hwy 64 west to bring us into Anamosa.

If you haven’t been, you really need to check Anamosa out. Right on Main Street you will find the National

Motorcycle Museum. You could spend the day looking at the history of what was, and what is the motorcycling world! After checking out the museum you can stride across the road and swing into Knuckleheads tavern where there is never a dull moment. Dawn the manager will keep you entertained and Larry the owner just might let his bird sit on your

shoulder! If that isn’t enough for you then head on out to J&P Cycle and they will fix you up with whatever products, supplies or parts you need!

After of full afternoon of motorcycle fun in Anamosa our time was drawing to an end. We wanted to make a few recommended last stops so we found E28 and took it into Stone City and then followed X28 to Wapsipinicon State Park which I highly recommend! We then reversed our route a bit and again took X28 out to E34 south, which turns into Hwy 1 south to Martelle in the southwest corner of the county.

It was a really great day with old and new friends accompanied by beautiful scenery! I am looking forward to getting over there again while the leaves are changing.

Keokuk County will occupy my time for the November issue. If you are from there or have a great recommendation of a can’t miss stop then by all means drop me a line! Happy riding!

If you have ever met my Boss-man Vernon you may have picked up his keen eye for certain things. He has had this idea for a while to add to the magazine’s already intoxicating line-up. It all started with a call by Vernon asking me my thoughts on a Bloody Mary Review to be added to our content. I stalled a bit muttering to myself to regain my thoughts, and figure out how to sink my mouth into this chilly tangy spicy mug of goodness! I assured Vernon that we would have a couple others join in, we would be safe and responsible, and that seemed to hook him on letting us take on the challenge.

So after the glow of this accomplishment of manipulation had worn off, I acquired quite a thirst. This seemed like a good time to have a frosty and plan our Sunday Bloody Funday. We decided on the closest Sunday on the calendar, as that was barely soon enough. In picking our wonderful destinations we wanted to incorporate the splendor of the northern beauty to kick our senses up a few notches. Wesettled on Clayton county because of their scenic hills, kick ass corners, and gorgeous green views.

When the day finally arrived, our chance to get out of the regular ho hum of kids, church, day to day routine was exciting. We were ready to roar down the highway in little time at all. This happened to be the earliest my wife had ridden all year and I could tell the morning air was a bit nippy for her. Nothing like a chilly ride to make a couple snuggle closer!

Our first endeavor was to head out on Hwy 3 to Edgewood, where the road is filled with open curves and scenery that even high speeds couldn’t dissipate. Our first stop left us empty and even more determined to quench our thirst as they were closed on Sundays. So dedicated to our mission

we hopped right back on and proceeded to the next stop. Lacking patience, our second stop was in the very next town; Rod and Cal’s Party Haven in Strawberry Point. The aroma of the first course ofthe day finally let me release some angst of the anticipation of our fun. Anne helped with her organization skills, by taking notes on the methods to their madness of putting our drinks together. The

mix was Tabasco brand which had good flavor, an abundance of seasonings and garnishments of olives, pickles, and the nice irregular touch of pickled asparagus. The sweetness of the bartender

seemedto calm my nerves from the week. The Mary’s went down in a couple good gulps, munches, and smiles. This was a Double Double! Thumbs up for the ride there and two thumbs up for the Bloody Mary’s!

Our next stop mapped out quite a distance and so to keep our energies focused we stopped quickly for a Cold One at a favorite of mine, Genes Place in Elkader; a nice little tavern with “God Damn Cold Beer”!!

Our next review was at the Irish Shanti in Gunder, Iowa. In our opinion, one of the best kept secrets in Iowa. Our task of slurping another red concoction that delighted the taste buds was the result again. The mix was similar to the previous Tabasco blend we enjoyed, but we noticed something a bit different ;the blend of flavors was consistently fluid to the last drop, all from their extra effort of shaking the drinktogether and not just stirring. This was our lunch spot too, as we ordered the world famous “Gunder

Burger.” Anyone who has ever tried it will NOT forget it! Super tasty delicious! Kevin the owner/bartender was super interesting to boot, his wisdom and knowledge on a multitude of things kept us both intrigued. Particularly their selection of Irish Whiskey! Yes, most certainly another Double Thumbs Up X Deuce!!

Next stop we ventured to was Pocket City Pub In McGregor, Iowa. Here we enjoyed a homemade mix with Sacramenti brand as the base. The different flavors were well received with a full blend needed to savor the Third Bloody, and still have your taste buds slapping grins on your face from the inside. With this being our last review stop we were able to mark the day down as a complete success. We finished with a perfect score 3 for 3 on Double Doubles. The day to ride the Clayton County area was one for the memory books. The Mississippi River roads, scenery and plethora of things and places to see, brought out the extra kudos. The Pocket City Pub is a Bucket List must or at the very least the town ofMcGregor is something every biker should experience!

I am feeling pretty good about all of our sacrifices to accomplish the extra workload Vernon bestowed upon us. I hope this brief review will spark an interest in your own “Sunday Bloody Funday”. Total bliss was easy to attain hanging with these kind, courteous, entertaining, Bloody Mary Slingers. Till our next Bloody Experience, “Rite On, Ride On”

“It’s coming”. By the time this article gets published it will be too late for the bikers to band together to attempt to stop it. But I figure it’s my duty to send out a warning to bikers across the state.

I was out racing down one of my favorite Iowa highways the other day and suddenly noticed that there was a very large patch of Sumac trees growing wildly in the ditch. I have ridden this highway countless times throughout the summer but never seemed to notice those damn trees before. My first indication that “its coming” was when I realized that those trees had suddenly transformed from green to a variety of shades of red. I was just starting to recover from the shock of those stupid trees when I rolled past an orchard and noticed that the branches were weighted down with bright red apples. That made me realize that “it’s coming” and just thinking about it makes me see red.

I looked to the sky, shook my fist and screamed “NO, this can’t be happening again! Not yet! I’m not ready”. As I rolled down the road I realized that seeing red had stirred up a bad case of road rage. This time the rage wasn’t aimed at a driver that had cut me off, a moron that had crossed the center line or an idiot who valued their phone call more than my life. My rage was aimed toward Mother Nature. I then quickly realized that my rage was useless because the bitch is deaf.

I decided if I was going to get any satisfaction from the ride I better just let go of the road rage and enjoy the scenery. So, I spent the rest of the ride observing how quickly my beloved routes were changing. Not only was I seeing red but I was also seeing a lot of yellow. Not the yellow dotted line that has guided my two wheels through countless miles or the yellow rays of the hot sun beating down on the roads that I love to travel. No, I managed to find an entire field of sunflowers that seemed to have suddenly sprung up since the last time I traveled this route. There is something super cool about a field full of sunflowers and the way that their vibrant yellow round heads resemble the sunshine that bikers worship. I found it rather odd that someone had purposefully planted sunflowers in Iowa. And as I cruised past that field, I noticed every single one of them was hanging their heads in shame, I figure they know “its coming” too.

I then realized that there small patches of yellow appearing in every corn field, it is slowly spreading to the bean fields and has even managed to infect

the leaves on a few trees. Bikers

everywhere know “it’s coming”, don’t know about the rest of

you, but I’m not ready for that yellow to spread through the state like an STD at an orgy.

Further down the road I noticed a field of pumpkins. The big green leaves were starting to shrivel up just enough to reveal glimpses of the big, fat pumpkins that have been hiding from the sun all summer long, just laying there green with Biker envy. This time as I rode past, I realized I’m seeing orange, now I know “its coming”. The pumpkins know “its coming” too but they are clueless about what’s in store for them. It won’t be long and those damn jack-o-lanterns will be sitting everywhere with their cocky, crooked, one tooth smiles, too stupid to realize that they lost the knife fight.

I then came upon a vast number of large patches of cat tails growing in the ditch. They too seem to have popped up out of nowhere. There they are standing so erect, firm and looking like a Shish Kabob wiener. I chuckled to myself thinking about the list of people I would like to see that done to.

Everything will soon be brown because “it’s coming”, the bambies have lost their spots, the bucks are about to get horny, and even the relentless Iowa ditch weed will soon turn brown and disappear into the landscape. And when the weed is gone, the party’s over.

Summer is on full throttle out of this great state and Fall is about to have its way with us. The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are dropping but there is still time to get out and enjoy the ever changing landscape and colors of Iowa on two wheels.

Ride them like you stole them, our riding days are numbered “its coming”.

“Autumn Riding Rules”

Yes, Autumn riding does rule. Temperatures

are cooler, bugs have died off, and the scenery can be spectacular. Autumn riding truly does rule. But said another way, there are also rules for riding in Autumn. For example- the sun is a lot lower in the sky. Have you ever looked down a paved road and seen nothing but bright sunshine glaring back at you, refl ecting off the surface of the road? Of course we all have. This phenomenon varies throughout the year, and at certain times of the year due to the sun traveling lower in the sky, the sun can line up directly with the alignment of the road. In Iowa with a lot of East/West roads, this can be a statewide condition. And it’s an awful time of day to ride. Think about it, if you can’t see anything but blinding light looking down the road, how on earth do you expect a motorist to see you? Often, it’s a simple solution, just wait a bit to head out or head home until the sun is not in direct alignment with the road surface. But choosing to ride in the center of a blow torch virtually assures no motorist can see you, when a simple delay could make your ride a lot safer.

The next condition that changes drastically is the presence of a lot of farm equipment on the roads. We all know this, and we have all shared the road with a lot of Ag equipment living and riding in Iowa. But one simple thing that can be added to your riding habits in autumn is slowing down a bit before cresting a blind hilltop on a bike. It’s no fun to crest a hill at 60 mph only to fi nd out that your lane is completely fi lled with John Deere Green going 11 mph. Backing off a touch before you pop over the top is a simple trick that can buy you a lot of feet of roadway in a pinch.

Also, it just got a lot cooler out, which means your tires cooled off a lot too. Which means they need air. Even if you just checked pressures last month, it’s time to do it again. Put the magazine down and go do that now, we’ll wait for you.

Finally, let’s talk about wildlife, specifi cally the White-tailed deer, (aka the “North American Ditch Donkey”). Deer have a lot on their agenda in autumn. Their cover is disappearing daily thanks to the harvest. The rut is approaching. Winter is coming, and they know it. Long story short, you and your

motorbike aren’t very high on their list.

Let’s review some facts:White-tailed deer are primarily crepuscular (active at twilight) in the spring, but are active during the hours of daylight as well in the summer, including midday. By late autumn at the onset of the rut and throughout this period, bouts of activity occur equally at all times during a 24-hour period. Winter activity, mainly foraging, is more likely in late afternoon. Storms at any time of year may reduce activity, with slightly more movement taking place before and after inclement weather. General levels of activity increase with day length in late winter and spring, decline in summer and then peak again in late autumn. Deer have dichromatic (two-color) vision with blue and yellow primaries; humans have trichromatic vision. Thus deer poorly distinguish the oranges and reds that stand out so well to humans. The Associated Press reported in 2005 that estimates put the deer population in the United States at around 30 million. Conservation practices have proved so successful that, in parts of their range, the white-tailed deer populations currently far exceed their cultural carrying capacity and the animal may be considered a nuisance. A reduction in natural predators (which normally cull young, sick or infi rm specimens) has undoubtedly contributed to locally abundant populations.

Deer are excellent fence-jumpers, and their fear of motion and sounds meant to scare them away is soon dulled. (1)

To sum it up, the deer population is large. They are largely driven by their sense of smell, particularly this time of year. You don’t smell like a date to them, so you don’t matter. They are used to all kinds of activity and noises, so the little deer whistles (which fi ll up with bugs in a week or two anyhow) aren’t of much value. In the spring, it’s best to avoid riding right at twilight. In the fall,

about anything goes, as they are active virtually around the clock. How many people have told you they swear the deer jumped out in front of them on purpose? You have to wonder sometimes, I’ve seen it too. I don’t have a solution for safe riding around deer other than to suggest that you expect the unexpected. I personally favor secondary roads during deer season for one simple reason- I can adjust my rate of travel to the 35-55mph range. I’m out for a ride to enjoy myself anyhow, what’s the rush? If I’m on a state highway and everybody (including the minivan right behind me) is traveling 55-65mph, my window of opportunity to react to and avoid that deer is just that much shorter. Bikes seldom come out on the winning side of a deer collision, and the age old adage of “you’re better off to just hit them” as the cage drivers say isn’t great advice to a motorcyclist. Bucks can weigh 150-300+ lbs., Doe weights can be up to 200 lbs. Not a great thing to hit on purpose in my opinion. Best advice I can offer is to reduce speeds as quickly as possible when a collision seems imminent, and do your best to avoid the animal without veering into oncoming traffi c.So enjoy your autumn riding, remember the rules, and we’ll see you next month. Bike Honors The Fallen

By Dick Tremain

The History Channel show I was

involved in has aired so my non-disclosure contract has expired. I can now talk about my small role in the fi lming and the dramatic “reveal” of a custom motorcycle built by Danny “The Count” Koker and his “Counting Cars” crew.

Mark Angle and I are friends and shipmates. We served together in the Navy aboard USS BELKNAP (DLG/CG-26) in the early 70s. He now lives in Virginia and I live in Des Moines.

A year ago, Mark contacted the Counting Cars production company asking if The Count would be willing to build a custom chopper for him to honor eight sailors killed in a tragic accident on the high seas.

That accident happened 39 years ago. Mark and I were both off of active duty and stateside the night of November 22, 1975. That was when our ship, fi lled with friends and former coworkers, collided with the aircraft carrier USS KENNEDY in the Lonian Sea. BELKNAP, the much smaller ship, suffered severe damage from the impact, fi re, and explosions that followed. Seven men were killed immediately while an eighth died two weeks later in a U.S. military hospital in Germany.

After the last fi re was put out and the ship towed back to the U.S. for rebuilding, life went on for the survivors, but, for Mark, the memory of that night turned into a white-hot desire to honor the lost. That’s why he called the Count.

The Count gave Mark an enthusiastic, “Yes!” In late 2013 Mark met with Danny Koker and his crew and design plans were discussed. Mark made a deposit to build the bike and with specifi cs entrusted to the builders.

It was now June 13, 2014. The bike was ready for unveiling. My wife, Maureen, and I traveled to the Los

Angeles area and stood at our appointed spot: beneath the rear-facing 16-inch gun barrels of USS IOWA’s turret three.

Finally, Danny Koker, Mark, the build team, and the History Channel camera crew arrived.

The Count had a lot of surprises for Mark that day and he sprung them on him in rapid fi re. First, was the location. He brought Mark back to his Navy roots by staging the reveal aboard a 60,000-ton battleship. Then the Count asked Mark’s shipmates to join him. Mark knew I was coming to the reveal, but he had no clue there would be ten other BELKNAP sailors attending; including a revered former commanding offi cer. Finally the Count gave the order and bike builder, Shannon Aikau, fi red up Mark’s new motorcycle from behind turret three. We could clearly hear the bike’s throaty roar over the wind. It sounded very good! Then Shannon rode it into view. The applause started and grew. Shannon stopped the bike, shut it off and Mark could, at long last, examine it. People gathered around the motorcycle to admire it. The bike was beautiful and it was a hit. We all joined in and studied this masterful work of art.

Mark was very pleased, to say the least, and the History Channel captured many of the details of the build and reveal

for all of us to see in the Counting Cars episode titled Power and Glory.

The BELKNAP Bike, as it is now called, is with Mark at his home in Virginia. The bike has been featured on television, in newspaper articles and at local events. This fall, Mark will trailer it to the annual USS BELKNAP Association meeting in Portland, Maine, for the rest of his shipmates to see.

It is good to have the non-disclosure gag off. I really like being able to talk about Mark Angle and the BELKNAP Bike. To me this proves that dreams do come true and anyone can honor our fallen in their own special way. All it takes is a dream, a plan, and a little perseverance.

Let’s talk food... that may seem like a kind of silly statement to make in an article that has “Eat” in its title. But this month that’s ex-actly what I want to start out the article by doing. For this month’s review we visited

the Metro Buffet in Perry. This is a Chinese buffet that has been one of our favorites for years. (I just never considered review-ing it before... DUH!!!!) Now here is where I want to talk about food. You see I like Chinese food, just not ALL Chinese food. When I visit a Chinese restaurant I need someone to go with me to decipher for me what I’m looking at on the menu! It’s like this, when I go to a burger joint I know I’m getting a burger with various toppings of my choosing on it. When I go to a steak house I know I’m getting a steak with some sides of my choosing. When I go to a Chinese place I have to ask my wife “What is it I like here again?” (My biggest fear comes from the “and” vs. “or” commercials they aired a while back... sweet OR sour sauce.... “It’s good, right?” AHHHHHHH-HHH!!!!!!) It’s exactly this dilemma that makes Metro Buffet one of my favorite places. Here YOU pick the food you want from what you see! And what you see will blow you away!!!!! They have a salad bar with all the usual’s including some of my favorites like Jello cubes, hard-boiled egg halves and chocolate pudding. They usually have at least one variety of soup offering. They have a variety of seafood choic-es. The day we were there I saw shrimp, salmon, two or three different crab meat dishes, and oysters (I’m told the oysters are delicious but I’ve never had them myself... maybe someday!). They put out an impressive spread of what I would consider appetizers or side dishes. Some of these include, barbecued chicken pieces, Chinese donuts, crab rangoon, spinach balls, egg rolls, and something

I had never tried before... chicken chunks deep fried in some kind of peanut butter coating... THEM BAD BOYS WAS AWESOME!!!!!!! Now keep in mind these lists I’m giving you are by no means compre-hensive! These are just the items I can remember!!! When it comes to what I consider the main course I start out hitting the big white cooker of rice (I could make a meal right there!!!! My grandmother used to make a quick snack from rice with some sugar sprinkled on top... I still have that as a snack from time to time to this day!!!!!). Once my plate is covered with rice I head to the entree island. One of the best things about a buffet over ordering from a menu is you can select different entrees on the same plate, I usually go with two or three at a time. On this trip my first selection was the General Tso Chicken (did my wife have to remind me that I liked this???? NOOOO!! I chose this all by myself

because I recognized it as something I’d had before and liked. Oh... and also because the tag that tells what it is had the word “HOT” in red letters beside it... maybe that was the MAIN reason I chose it LOL) and my second selection was the Mongolian Beef (this one was solely be-cause I recognized it from before!). Being a buffet the portions are only limited by the size of your plate and your own appe-tite. By the time we were done I had eaten so much that I couldn’t even consider the ice cream or some of the cake squares

that they have for desert!!!!! I know, I know... I need to plan these things better!!!

I may have missed the cake and ice cream this trip but there’s always next time... and

there WILL be many more “next times”!!! Check out the Metro Buffet in Perry and I’m sure that it will become one of your favorites as well!!!

Until next month, ride safe and eat hearty!Craig [email protected] If you have someplace you think we should check out in your neck of the woods, shoot me an email

Three girls go into the doctors offi ce. The fi rst takes off her shirt and the doctor notices that

she has a blue ‘Y’ on her chest. He asks “How did you get that?” She answers “Well my boyfriend goes to Yale and he leaves his Yale sweatshirt on even when we make love.” The next girl comes in and has

a red ‘H’ on her chest. She explains “Well my boyfriend goes to Harvard and he leaves his sweatshirt on even when we make love.” The fi nal girl comes in and has a ‘W’ on her

chest. The doctor asks “Let me guess, you have a boyfriend that goes to Wisconsin?” She answers “No, a girlfriend at Michigan. Why?”

Tom and Jenna have been having problems in bed so Jenna confi des in one of her friends, Sally. Sally tells Jenna, “You should go see my sex therapist. Me and John were having issues and he told us to buy donuts and grapes. I eat the doughnut off of John’s penis and he uses his tongue to eat the grapes out of me. Ever since, our sex life has been better than ever.” So Tom and Jenna go to see the sex therapist. When they arrive the secretary tells them to strip down and wait in his offi ce. When the therapist arrives he turns around and tells them, “I can’t help you.” Jenna yells back, “Wait! Can’t you just give us the same advice you gave John and Sally?” He says, “Okay, on your way home buy some life savers and a coconut.”

Mrs. Smith, a fi rst grade teacher, is trying to teach her kids how to identify various animals. First is a cheetah so she tells them “This cat has lots of spots.” One of the kids guesses “A cheetah!” Next is an elephant so she tells them “This animal is huge and has a trunk.” One of the kids says “A elephant!” The fi nal animal is a deer but she can’t think of any clues. Finally she tells them “This is what your mommy might call your daddy.” One of the kids says “Horny bastard!”

A 100-year-old man enters a Catholic confessional and admits “Father, last night I had sex with a couple of 18-year-old girls for hours.” The priest sternly replies “That is a sin, I’m going to give you a penance.” The old man laughs “That won’t be necessary father, I’m Jewish.” The father, confused, asks “Why are you telling me this?” “I’m telling everyone!”

A man walks into the bank and walks up to the teller. She asks him “Can I help you sir?” The man replies “Yeah, I want to open up a fucking bank account.” She tells him “Sir, we don’t tolerate that sort of language here.” She then gets the manager, who agrees that she should not put up with the man’s language. The manager approaches the man and asks “Sir, do we have an issue here?” The man replies “No! I just want to put this motherfucking 100 million dollars I won in the goddamn lottery into a bank account.” “Oh,” says the manager, “was this bitch giving you trouble, sir?”

A small boy asks his Dad, “Daddy, what is politics?” Dad says, “Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I’m the breadwinner of the family, so let’s call me Capitalism. Your mom, she’s the administrator of the money, so we’ll call her the Government. We’re here to take care of your needs, so we’ll call you the People. The nanny, we’ll consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we’ll call him the Future. Now, think about that and see if that makes sense.” So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He fi nds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. The little boy goes to his parents’ room and fi nds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny’s room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father having sex with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed. The next morning, the little boy says to his father, “Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.” The father says, “Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.” The little boy replies, “Well, while Capitalism is screwing the Working Class, the Government is sound asleep, the People are being ignored and the Future is in Deep Shit.

A guy walks into the bar of a restaurant and goes to the bartender and asks “how much for a beer?” The bartender replies “$1”. The customer completely amazed, orders a beer then asks the bartender “Well then how much for a NY sirloin, with side of mashed potatoes and salad, and an entire cheesecake for desert?” The Bartender reply’s “$5”. The guy still amazed then orders everything and after he is done eating his meal then says “Wow, this place is amazing, I really wish I could meet the owner of this place”. The bartender then says “Oh well, he’s upstairs in his offi ce with my wife”. The guy looks all confused then asks “What is he doing upstairs in his offi ce with your wife?” The bartender then says “The same thing I’m doing to his business”.

A man goes to a restaurant where he sees a sign on the wall that says: “If we can’t fi ll your order, we’ll give you $500.”So when the waitress comes to his table he orders, “I’ll have rye toast with elephant dung.” The waitress writes down his order and calmly walks to the kitchen. About ten minutes later the manager storms out of the kitchen and lays out $500 on the man’s table. Angry, the manager says, “Are you happy? This is the fi rst time in ten years we haven’t had rye bread!”

Paddy and his two friends are talking at a bar. His fi rst friend says, “I think my wife is having an affair with our electrician. Last week I came home and found wire cutters under our bed and they weren’t mine.” His second friend says, “I think my wife is having an affair with the plumber. This week I found a wrench under the bed and it wasn’t mine.” Paddy says, “I think my wife is having an affair with a horse.” Both his friends look at him with utter disbelief. “No I’m serious. Yesterday I came home and found a jockey under our bed.”

What is a Biker?I’ve seen several articles that have tried to defi ne what it is to be a biker. It seems like lots of them think that it’s all about beer, God, country, and objectifying women. I thought I’d like to take a stab at defi ning ‘biker’ too. To me a biker is a free thinking individual motorcyclist who doesn’t agree with being governed by others. So, in other words, someone who is willing to do what it takes to maintain and enhance his or her liberty.

It’s not about ‘the uniform’, you know, the black t-shirt with jeans, leather or denim vest, and boots. It’s not about the phonies participating in the heavily scripted so called biker reality TV shows or even the make-believe B.S. on shows such as the “Anarchists”. It’s about living to ride, not buying the next chrome thingamajig. Real bikers show up. We show up at lobby day, Election day, and we show up often enough to make sure that the people elected to represent us know who we are and what we think. That is what a biker is.

Some information for my biker readers, and for those who want to join; we are approaching another legislative session. Keep in mind that all legislation exists only to limit someone’s freedom to do what they want to do. The only way to expand freedom is to eliminate some old rules and really limit any new restrictions to liberty. Once again here in Iowa we’ll be facing another attempt to regulate our wardrobe. For some reason people who don’t ride want to tell us what we should wear when we do.

On the federal level, in the Senate we need support for SB2078 which would stop federal funding for “motorcycle only checkpoints”. In the House its counterpart is called HB1861. Also in the House of Representatives is

HR875 which would provide funding for a comprehensive assessment of the scientifi c and technical research on the implications of the use of midlevel ethanol blends in all types of internal combustion engines, including lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc. – not just cars and trucks. I would think that all the farmers who want more money for their corn would really like to prove that E85 is good so then we might actually buy it. In addition, the House

has HR2414 which seeks to regulate black boxes in motorcycles, and to clarify that the owner of the vehicle owns the recorded data.

The “fi ght” goes on all the time. Think about it. Total up the number of elected folks we each have. In addition to 500+ folks in Washington D.C., add all of the state legislatures, governors, judges, etc. Then add up your local city hall, board of supervisors and school boards. There are a lot of folks to keep track of. I’ve never met a biker who wouldn’t do whatever he could to resist their freedom being taken away, not just his or her own.

I encourage you to contact me, whether you agree or [email protected]
