Author's program note. Let's get something straight from the get-go. I am not just here to talk aboutsome woman of a "certain age" as the French whose elegant language she mangled would say.

I am not just here to talk about someone you hardly noticed and completely forgot before you everbothered to remember.

I am not just here to utter banalities of which said the faster the better and make-do superficialitieson an event which, after all, is our common lot and undeniable, bitter destiny. Oh, no!

I am here to talk about -- and make absolutely sure you fully understand --

... one of God's certifiable helpers, an energetic dynamo with an ingredient all we benighted humansneed... must have... and are always grateful to get... a smile. This was Erin's great gift... for herradiant smile was manna from heaven... balm in the desert... a ray of hope for better days on daysthat were dismal... and an unceasing benefit she took from deep within and shared with all... even ondays when it took courage to smile and when she could only dream that better days would surelycome. For in her smile there was the promise of tomorrow.... God gave her this undeniable powerand she used it all her too brief life for us all.

Her smile was mega-watt magic...

It made the lonely feel they had a friend in a world of isolation.

It gave even the most abject hope.

It assured the grieving they did not grieve alone.

It like so much brilliant light touched the unnumbered legion of the forgotten, the world-weary anddespairing as a pledge that they could persevere, they could still grow and flourish in that light, herlight.

Hers was a smile from which each took what he needed, from the reassurance it gave a fretful childto the resolution and courage bestowed on a fellow traveler down on his luck who saw in Erin'sbounteous gift the element he needed to try again. Erin had ample for all. And it was her great joyand honored privilege to give... and bestow the beatitude that was her smile.

I am talking of Erin Sims, our dear Erin, who gave so much to so many, her great gift as essential toour well being as the very air itself. Our Erin, now gone, her mission on Earth now done, but not itsgreat results, for they are as a stone that causes unending ripples in placid waters.

June 27, 1957 - September 17, 2012, her journey.

Any place may be a good place to be born, but some places are better than others, a place ofauspicious omens and propitious aspects. Surely one of the best of such places is the Golden State ofCalifornia, a place of light, air, calm waters and healthy living. To be born in such a place andbenefit from its near infinite resources is God's way of smiling on you and confirming His goodintentions for a journey packed with promise. Erin's began in Culver City, one of the several districts

part of America's great entertainment industry, a city where dreaming was not merely allowed butexpected, encouraged. And she did dream, first of education.

Erin recognized early that education was the vehicle that could turn her vivid dreams into valuedrealities. Thus, she made that most constructive of deals; to turn evanescent, fast fleeting time, intothe sinews and foundation of the well- planned life.

She graduated from California Polytechnic State University, Pomona and then proved her goodintentions and clear thinking by taking an MBA in 1980 in Management Information Systems; ashrewd move given the world's massive tilt to information technologies, then but newly underway. She was that "new woman" indeed, a woman fully equipped and determined to succeed in a "man'sworld", while never forgetting the special gifts and attributes a woman brings to the table; empathy, care, humanity, community. She never lost these or forgot how essential they are to the well livedlife, even in business. It was always about the people with Erin and their well being.

Everything changed... but the essentials.

Somewhere along the way of her dreams, her plans and her achievements, a physician's regularreport changed everything; everything that is but her deepest beliefs, for Erin was told of adebilitating heart condition, a condition which could and at any instant might take everything shehad worked for, enjoyed, and loved.

It was at this time of ardent and profound reflection, where one's relationship with God becomesintimate, intense, and personal that Erin made the greatest decision of her life: to live each day as ifit might be her last, for it might be; to find happiness and solace in all the good things around her,and above all, to love; for of life's great benefits the greatest of all is the power to love and sotransform the world. And Erin, our Erin, had this gift, no one more.

What's more, unimpeded by "what might have been", she awoke each day determined to use thisgift, with her special smile always at the ready... and a roiling world needing it so. Thus Erin smiledin the face of everything, a brave human being, courage to her fingertips, determination to carry onregardless her metier and benediction. And so this plucky woman of grace and resolution smiledthrough her troubles though there must have been despairing moments when resolution was sorelytested... and yet found deep within the constant power to love the world, especially her only child, onwhom she doted.

Cameron.

Cameron, I take this opportunity to address you personally and as your friend, though we have notyet met. For the last few months of your mother's abbreviated life I had the pleasure of knowing andworking with her in our unique Internet enterprise, Worldprofit. Because your mother was a volubletalker and as good a listener, our online talks were wide-ranging, humorous, always honest andrevealing in ways known only to aficiandos of the 'net.

Of the many topics we covered, sometimes irreverent, sometimes outrageous, sometimes analytical, sometimes discursive, always punctuated by laugher, there was one topic she consistently raised...and that topic was you and her abiding love for you, a love the more vibrant and enduring becauseyour mother was a notably lovable individual.

You were always her first priority; your welfare always her first objective. She was proud of you, telling me your attributes and achievements in detail, and always with love. We all smiled at herunbridled enthusiasm about you and everything you were doing; we liked her the better for it

Now your mother, our colleague and friend, is gone, as we all must go. As you think of her over themany years to come, remember today for this is a festival of remembrance, a time where grief must

give way to our collective and sincere gratitude that we had Erin in our lives, if only for a littlewhile.

Now I ask you to fix an image in your mind, an image to last you for life, of your mother, ourfriend, with a great overblown rose in her hair, radiant, talking a mile a minute... and smilingbroadly. Close your eyes and see her... and in the background play a tune that could have been hertheme song, "Smile"; understand she is singing this song for all of us, but always and foreverespecially for you, whom she loved the best of all.

"Smile, Cameron, though your heart is aching/ Smile even though it's breaking"

And remember....

The author dedicates this work to Cameron Sims, son, and Johan Willems, friend and colleague. When Cameron went online to find help, Johan assisted then and has worked with him since. Johanhas also been in touch with Erin's sister Adrian Sims, without whose help this article and tributewould not have been possible. Thank you, all of you.

As for me, it was my privilege to write this appreciation, for I did appreciate Erin, feisty, a woman ofher own mind and opinions, we liked and respected each other. and looked forward to our almostdaily encounters.

Now, go to any search engine and find Charlie Chaplin's magnetic song "Smile"; the music used inthe 1936 classic "Modern Times"; the words and title written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsonsin 1954. Sung originally by Nat King Cole, I like the version by Michael Jackson. He left us toosoon, too.

Author's program note. This is the story of a man I knew who died. It is our story, for in learningabout that man you will learn about this man... and you will learn about yourself, which is alwaysdifficult and always worth doing.

This article will make you think about what brings people together... and what drives them apart. Inthe next minutes, you will laugh... and you will cry. You will want to have known Michael... andyou will be glad you didn't... then sorry you missed him all over again.

Human relationships are like that. They are never about just one thing, they are about everything, and as fast as you can boil asparagus they can jump from one thing to another... and back again. That's how it was with Michael... that's how it is with me... and, if you're honest, it's how it is withyou.

So, let's have some music, the kind he liked, soaring, lyric, so beautiful you can hardly bear it.

Mike, Michael.

For openers, you'll never understand Michael Pachuta unless you understand that he started as Mikeand ended as Michael. He was always Michael to me, and he liked it that way. You see, calling himMichael gave him just a hint of the class he had sought for a lifetime, but so rarely got.

No, you will never understand Michael if you don't know how much he wanted that class and easyacceptance, that recognition, how hard he worked to get it (for he was a prodigious worker), yet howseldom he got it. Well, that buck stops here.

I was his CEO, goad, colleague, and I was always glad to compliment his performance... just as Inever hesitated to tell him when it needed this or that, thereby moving closer to perfection.

The music is Rodgers and Hammerstein's breathtakiing "Carousel Waltz" from the 1945 Broadwaymusical, "Carousel". Find it now in any search engine. It conveys the magic, the beauty, the joy thatevery carnival must deliver... for the purpose of a carnival is to brighten burdened lives with color, happiness, elation, and a lifetime of brilliant, bittersweet memories and faded photographs, crumpled and priceless.

This is one part, the most visible part of a carnival, where you spin forever on the most captivatingpart of this experience, the carousel. No one has ever captured this aspect of the carnival with greateraccuracy and joy than Rodgers and Hammerstein.

But there is another aspect of the carnival that is not so joyous and alluring... and that is the backstage "keep it out of sight so the happy customers will not see" drudgery... and from his early daysyoung Mike Pachuta, carney, knew this. This part of the life was rootless, uncertain, here today, gonetomorrow, a life without stability or security, the purveyors of magic so desperately needing some ofthis magic to lighten their own lives and make their burdens bearable... and here Michael needed allthe help he could get.

Thoughts on Michael. Michael P. Pachuta, March 9, 1955-December 18, 2013 Special Tribute and others who havebeen brought to the Lord

He never mentioned his mother Bonnie Ellen to me, but he would talk about his carney fatherMichael Richard Pachuta. And what he said was often disquieting, saddening, deeply disturbing, always distressing; the kind of thing no one ever wants to hear and which we too often flee. Therewere the sharp, hurtful words, and the sharper, hurtful miseries, physical, mental, always painful, thestuff of torment and heartbreak.

It was all there, too frequent, the ironic backdrop to the entrancing elegance of the always circulatingcarousel, an object of sublime beauty and floating splendor, a glorious thing that reminded Michaelthat there was beauty and joy in the world; he just needed to find and grasp them with all his mightwhen he did. This became the quest of his often rocky life. On this quest, he answered an ad on theInternet for a business opportunity, an ad that lead him to Worldprofit... and to me.

By this time in his life he had done all the foolish things we do to hurt ourselves. This included apunishing schedule as a school bus driver, a thankless task that might well make you despair giventhe simian behaviors of the young people we are afraid to call our future. Michael cracked the whip, barked orders, took the worst perpetrators aside for blunt chats and stern admonitions. He also droveathletic teams to their games; to quell their overabundant enthusiasms when they won... and toexhort them to greater efforts when they lost. He gave, early and late, more than he had to give. Hegave because giving was Michael's metier, the person he was, the person he had to be. And now thisperson entered my sphere...

Michael and me, the scruffy bearded ying; the decadent, effete yang (or so he thought).

For the last 8 years or so, I have been using Worldprofit's Live Business Center at Worldprofit to docutting-edge video marketing. The site is unique, not least because it is manned 24 hours a day bydedicated volunteers called Monitors. These dedicated folks answer questions and generally do amagnificent job of getting people worldwide started in a home-based business of their own.Thousands have already successfully done so.

Michael saw the LBC, and it was love at first sight. He made it clear to me, the Worldprofit officerfor recruiting, training and working with Monitors, that he was ready, willing and able to berecruited, trained and worked with. I confess I was skeptical. I had grave doubts that he could pull itoff, becoming a productive member of the team.

He, after all, was self-educated. I was Harvard. He slaughtered the language I loved, irritated that Icorrected him over and over again. We met almost daily in mortal combat. He liked coming up onthe screen. He had the undoubted gift of gab and could sling the linguistic hash with almostanyone... but me... and I was the boss.

However I knew as soon as I saw his screen test that he was not only talented but that he was real, exuding sincerity, integrity, credibility. He thought that would be enough... but I wanted theperfection I knew he could give. Good enough just wasn't good enough. And on this basis theskirmishes of our unending war took place, with me always having the last word. Rank, after all, hath its privileges. That infuriated him... and ensured he did his best to trip me up. It was acompetition that thrilled us both... and kept his nose in the dictionary, a book with which he hadpreviously had but scant acquaintance.

Of course, he thought of quitting. That, after all, is always a possibility, although for winners nothingmore than that. However, Michael loved the people, loved the interaction with all the peopleworldwide he was helping, and knew he couldn't get it anywhere else. There had to be a way ofkeeping what he loved while putting that pesky know-it-all (that would be me) in his place. Andthere was... it was called understanding what that know-it-all had in mind. Thus Michael slowly butsurely embraced cooperation. Its results were exhibited in a most memorable way...

Michael and The Grinch.

In December of 2012, I began working on a story that became an immediate classic, "Christmasfrom another point of view. The Grinch has his day... astonishing revelations from his first-everinterview exclusive to me exclusively here." As usual Michael asked me what I was working on,what he could read aloud from my current work in progress. And so he came to meet The Grinch. And though I didn't recognize the perfect partnership instantly, Michael most assuredly did. Yousee, every great actor knows which role is his to fly with... and there was no doubt this pairing wasinspired.

Imagine if you will the background music provided by Eric Clapton, "After Midnight", and thistrenchant description, " 'Ask me anything...' and he grinned broadly, the kind of grin of ribaldremarks, very dry martinis perfectly made, and bottoms pinched just so. Thus I learned that TheGrinch liked the good life."

And so Michael brought voice to my already irrepressible character and made the world smile, especially at Christmas, like another jolly old elf, whom he so distinctly resembled.

One day he had the nerve to shave off his luxurious growth. I was horrified and said so. "You don'ttamper with perfection!" He got the point and never made that mistake again. He was learning...andloving the results. I'd captured my man...

As he perfected himself so he paid closer attention to my objectives, to the extent that he becameone of my most effective readers, a man who could move the heart of the world... and did.

Michael Pachuta had found a home and a community of people who valued him and knew exactlyhow big his big heart was. Yes, he was home with us... and was fair enough to compliment me,something he told me with characteristic bluntness he never thought he'd ever do. Like I said, he washonest to a fault. And we all loved and treasured him accordingly, for he was the best of us.

Now he is gone, but not alone for he has taken a part of each of us on his eternal journeyaccompanied by the celestial touch of another masterpiece by Rodgers and Hammerstein from"Carousel", "You'll Never Walk Alone". Go now to any search engine and listen carefully for thereis peace for us all.

"Walk on through the wind/Walk on through the rain/ Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown/ Walkon, walk on/ With hope in your heart/ And you'll never walk alone/ You'll never walk alone."

No, Michael you will never walk alone.

Envoi.

The character of Billy Bigelow, male lead in "Carousel', was made famous by John Raitt(1917-2005). As it happened his son Steve was sports editor on the high school newspaper, "TheWarrior". I was editor-in-chief. Steve's little sister was Bonnie Raitt, and we treated her with theoffhand nonchalance that distinguishes the relations of older brothers and younger sisters. I saw Mr.Raitt often but never in his role as heart throb singer and movie star. No, he was just Steve andBonnie's dad. Sadly, just recently I learned that Steve, once so handsome, vibrant and mischievoushad passed (April 2009, just 61) and a wave of sadness and nostalgia overcame me. But I knew thathe, too, would never walk alone...

Dedication.

The author takes this opportunity to dedicate this very personal story about Michael Pachuta to histwo daughters Dianna Sandora and Darcia Mason and Darcia's four children Gage, CaraMia,Mathew and Aiden. It is my pleasure to have shown you all a side of Michael you may not have
