Which Size of Ukulele?

The most common size for a beginner’s Ukulele is called a ‘Soprano’ Ukulele. This size is

suitable for most children. Prices start around £15 to £20.

The next size up is a ‘Concert’ Ukulele which has a bigger body and a longer neck. We would

suggest that you visit a shop and see which size feels best. Alternatively come along to our

‘Singalong a Uke’ evening on the last Monday of each month at 6.30pm – see

http://www.visitthorntonledale.co.uk/assets/cabinet/Sing_along_a_Uke_poster_Sept_16.p

df . If you arrive a little earlier we can have a chat and let you try different sizes of

instruments.

There are smaller and larger Ukuleles but the Soprano and Concert sizes are most popular.

Tuning:

The strings are tuned to GCEA – note: on Soprano and Concert Ukuleles the G is a high G.

If you are tuning using a piano this is a link to doing so http://www.get-tuned.com/ukulele-

tuning-piano.php

If you have a smartphone, you can download an App – most of these are free

of charge. These are fine for use in a quiet room. They use the microphone of

the smartphone and so if there is any other sound, the tuning becomes almost

impossible. You pluck each string in turn until the desired tuning is reached,

which is typically indicated by a letter that turns green when the tuning is

correct.

Most players use a clip on tuner which works using the vibration of the

ukulele’s neck. These are not affected by extraneous noise and cost from

about £5. When you reach the correct note they typically turn green. Start

with string 4 (G) and then 3, 2, 1. Pluck the string with your thumb of one

hand whilst turning the string adjusters. There are lots of tutorials on the

internet e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSa3oIQSgCA

Some tuners have a button for individual instruments and simply tell you the

string number

Page 16: Thornton le Dale Ukuleles - Yorkshire's Little Gem ... · PDF fileThornton le Dale Ukuleles ... 5 Lion Sleeps tonight 6 Happy Birthday 7 Amazing Grace ... You'll never know dear, how

Appendix 3: Chords and strumming

Chords are a collection of notes that give nice harmonious sound when you strum the four

strings. They sound nicest if you strum near to the sound hole or slightly higher up the neck

of the ukulele. Ideally wear a short sleved shirt/blouse or roll your sleve up.

The songs in this book are chosen as they are easy to play – initially with just one finger on

your left hand.

On a right handed ukulele your left hand holds the string(s) whilst your right hand strums

downward. Most players use the back of their first finger to strum the strings but other

fingers are ok as is the thumb if you prefer. A strum is a gentle downward motion – as you

get more exerience the strumming pattern can change rythmn and includes up and down

strokes.

Chords are shown by little diagrams like this:

Your finger should go just above the fret. Try to avoid touching the

adjacent strings. Try plucking each string individually. They should

make a nice note free from rattle. This chord F (easy version) has a

finger on string 2. If string 2 is ‘rattley’ then try pressing a bit harder. If

strings 4, 3, & 1 are ‘Rattley’ then it is likely to be the position of your

finger. Try to get a right angle bend in your knuckle … if it will let you!

Appendix 4 has a simple song using F and C7 chords. Strum some downward strokes then

start to sing the tune. The songs in the main part of the music book have a ‘Talking

Songbook’ to follow. As you play the songbook we talk you though each song whist playing

and singing. See
