Telenor Satellite Broadcasting – THOR 7 3

Demand for reliable connections con-tinues to grow rapidly due to the in-creased use of IP applications such as broadband internet access, VOIP, video streaming, email and improved access to corporate networks, so that those at sea can stay in touch with business operations, as well as to improve the quality of life for crew working aboard offshore vessels.

Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc) provides high powered satellite capa- city to facilitate ever increasing industry demands for both bandwidth and reliability.

From its long established 1˚West orbital location, TSBc delivers solutions to the main providers of connectivity for the maritime and offshore markets.

Our existing Ku band beams deliver strong signals and provide optimal cov-erage in busy shipping lanes, including the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Barents Sea.

With the launch of THOR 7, TSBc will also provide High Throughput Satellite (HTS) Ka band services, delivering the highest performing satellite payload designed for the maritime market.

Telenor Satellite Broadcasting’s (TSBc) THOR 7 Ka-band High Throughput Satellite (HTS) payload offers 6-9 Gbps throughput with up to 25 simultaneously active spot beams. We will offer services with download speeds in the tens of Mbps, even from small antennas and deliver uplink speeds anywhere from 2Mbps to 6Mbps (depending upon antenna size). Service reliability is key, with TSBc implementing a package of solutions to mitigate rain-fade on Ka band.

THOR 7A HIGH PERFORMANCE SATELLITE PROVIDING SEAMLESS COVERAGE THROUGHOUT EUROPE

Owing to the configuration of an HTS payload which uses more concentrated spots, delivering a higher performance than a conventional beam- TSBc is able to deliver cost-effective solutions, supporting higher speeds for users with smaller antennas.

Reliability is crucial to support mission critical communication applications. To ensure teleport availability exceeding 99.5%, TSBc has implemented a variety of techniques to mitigate rain fade, including a new secondary uplink site located in Norway to provide antenna site diversity.

Once THOR 7 is launched, TSBc will continue to offer both Ku band and HTS/Ka band solutions to satisfy the specific requirements of individual customers.

Supported by the iDirect next gener- ation Velocity© platform, TSBc is able to offer VNO service solutions on its fixed beams, similar to those that we pro-vide on our Ku band iDirect platform. The iDirect platform offers automatic and seamless spot beam hand over, a necessity for a market that relies upon continuous connectivity.

The iDirect platform also allows service plans to be designed for large VSAT ser-vice providers, as well as smaller resellers and includes sophisticated bandwidth management of all the THOR 7 spot beams, allowing bandwidth spread across multiple beams to be treated as a single large capacity pool.

Cobham SATCOM and Intellian became the first two antenna vendors approved for TSBc’s THOR 7 satellite. Several other maritime VSAT antennas are presently being evaluated and aim to be approved ahead of the THOR 7 launch.

THOR 7 KA BAND SERVICE FEATURES

• Achieving uplink speeds anywhere between 2Mbps to 6Mbps (depending on an antenna size)

• Seamless spot beam handover

• Cobham SATCOM and Intellian antennas approved with more antenna manufacturers to follow
