A: The Talmud (Sukkot 38b) teaches us that there is a concept of Shomeah K'Oneh (listening is tantamount to speaking) in Jewish law. Meaning, if a person listens to someone else reciting a prayer, the individual who heard the prayer is considered as if he/she has said the prayer himself/herself. This principal is obviously very powerful for those unable to make a blessing on their own. However, there are important rules to keep in mind. Rav Yosef Karo writes in Shulchan Aruch (O”C 219/5) that in order for Shomeah K'Oneh to work, the one physically making the Brakha and the one hearing the Brakha must have the correct intention in mind. The individual actually reciting the blessing must have the intention of making the Brakha on behalf of the other. Additionally, the individual listening to the Brakha must have the intention of fulfilling his or her obligation through listening. Additionally, the Shulchan Aruch (O”C 213/3) records that in order for Shomeah K'Oneh to work, the individual hearing the Brakha has to clearly hear every single word from the one making the Brakha. If either of these two conditions is not met, Shomeah K'Oneh does not work. DAVENING AT HOME

Minhagim and Halakhot Shabbat Parashat Korach ~ June 26, 2020 – July 3, 2020

By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

During the Covid-19 crisis, the following guide should be followed if you are davening

without a Minyan.

FRIDAY JUNE 26TH

• Early Mincha is at 6:30 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:39 PM. A full Kabbalat

Shabbat and Maariv should be recited starting only after 6:39 PM. After the Maariv

Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and Elohenu V’Elohei Avotenu. They are

only said when davening with a permanent Minyan.

• When starting Shabbat early remember to repeat the full Shema after 8:54 PM.

• Candles can be lit between 6:39 - 7:51 PM

• If one accepts Shabbat before Shkiah (8:09 PM), Mincha should begin no later than 8:00

PM.

SHABBAT JUNE 27TH – KORACH

• Shacharit is a regular Shabbat Shacharit.

• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited when davening with a Minyan.

• The Torah reading from a Chumash is Parashat Korach. The Haftorah is from Shmuel

Aleph (11:14-12:22).

• Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only when

davening with a Minyan.

• Recite the Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael.

• Recite Av HaRachamim followed by Ashrei.

• Mincha can be said as early as 1:34 PM but no later than 7:55 PM.

• During Mincha recite the sentence V’Ani Tefilati right after U’va L’Tziyon.

• Recite Tzidkatcha Tzedek at Mincha.

• Maariv is the regular weekday Maariv.

• Recite V’he Noam and V’yeeten Lecha.

• Recite Kiddush Levanah. Look up at the moon and then turn east to say Kiddush

Levanah. If you have no family member with you say the phrase Shalom Alechem –

Alechem Shalom to yourself three times. Say Aleynu at the conclusion of Kiddush

Levanah.

• Shabbat ends 8:54 PM. Say a complete Havdalah.

SUNDAY JUNE 28TH - FRIDAY JULY 3RD

• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha.

• On Monday and Thursday recite the longer version of Tachanun just like we do if we had

a Minyan and were reading the Torah.

• Rabbi Soloveitchik Z”L was of the opinion that when saying Tachanun even when a

Sefer Torah isn’t present, one should still fall on one’s arm and recite the opening

chapter just like the way we do when davening inside a Shul.
