PARSHA SUMMARY First Torah Reading - Exodus 6.2-9.35
The Sidrah is the second in a series of three Shabbat Torah portions that tell of the encounters between Moses and Pharaoh. The Israelites have been a slave people in Egypt for four hundred years. At the end of this period of slavery, G-d instructs Moses to go down from Midian to negotiate with Pharaoh for the freeing of the Israelites. Moses, joined by his brother Aaron, follows G-d’s instructions. They come before Pharaoh to propose a three-day holiday for the Israelites. Pharaoh angrily rejects their proposal. He makes the Israelites work harder than ever. Moses and Aaron are deeply disappointed.
In the Sidrah, Moses is instructed to go with Aaron once again. At this second appearance to plead for the Israelites, Pharaoh demands evidence of Moses and Aaron that they are truly G-d’s messengers. They perform a remarkable act with a magical rod but Pharaoh is not impressed. His magicians can match the performance. They leave the palace once again disappointed with their mission.
The time for talking with Pharaoh is now at an end and a period of action begins. A series of terrible plagues come upon Egypt. But Pharaoh remains stubborn and he will not release the Israelite slaves.
Haftarah Reading - Ezekiel 28.25-29.21 The Haftarah is from the Book of Ezekiel. The Prophet Ezekiel was
among the exiles who were taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylonia in 598 B.C.E. Along with some of his fellow-exiles, Ezekiel settled in Tel Aviv on the Chebar Canal. It was a difficult period for his people. Ezekiel keeps his faith in G-d strong and he shares that faith with the exiles. Ezekiel assures them that G-d will yet bring about their return to Jerusalem.
In the meanwhile, in addition to helping the exiled Israelites in Babylonia, Ezekiel also sends messages to those Hebrews who have remained in the Holy Land. They have made a political alliance with Egypt because they think that Egypt will save them from Babylonian conquest. But Ezekiel warns them strongly to stay away from Egyptian connections. Egypt is not a dependable ally, Ezekiel predicts, too, that Egypt will eventually be conquered by Babylonia as well.
The theme link between the Sidrah and the Haftarah is that of Egypt, an undependable land in its dealings with the Hebrews in Moses’ time and again in Ezekiel’s day.
