most of the Hebrew Prophets both before and after, brings two kinds of messages to the people: One kind is critical and the other is comforting. In the Haftarah there are examples of both.

Isaiah, in the first part of the Haftarah, comforts them and gives the people hope for a better future. They are now suffering for the wrongs which they have done against G-d’s teachings. But in time to come, Israel will have changed its ways for the better. They will be forgiven by G-d and once more will the people return to its beloved Jerusalem.

In the second part of the Haftarah, the Prophet Isaiah criticizes the Israelites of the Northern Kingdom. They are interested only in a life of luxury and dishonesty. They will suffer punishment for their foolish selfishness.

Finally, Isaiah returns again to a message of hope for a better future in the life of Israel. G-d will remember his promise made long ago to the Patriarchs, Abraham and Jacob, and He will carry out the blessings promised.

The theme link between the Sidrah and the Haftarah is Israel’s suffering as a slave people in Egypt and G-d’s concern for their freedom and Israel’s suffering in the time of Isaiah with a parallel future redemption for them.

We are looking for a few volunteer Bubbies and Zadies

PARSHA SUMMARY First Torah Reading - Exodus 1-6.1

The Sidrah tells of the experiences of the Israelites about four centuries after they had come down to Egypt from Canaan. They had arrived in Egypt in the period when Joseph was Pharaoh’s prime minister, about 1600 B.C.E. The Sidrah deals with events that take place around 1200 B.C.E., four hundred years later.

During this period the Israelites had grown from a small clan into a large, powerful people. The Egyptian kings considered them to be a threat, although they had been a productive people who had helped Egypt greatly over the centuries. But a new group of Pharaohs came to power, “who knew not Joseph,” and began to persecute the Hebrews.

The Pharaoh in the Sidrah, sets out a planned program to break the spirit of the Israelites. Firstly, he enslaves them giving them the hardest kind of labor to do. Next, he orders the killing of all boy children; they are to be drowned in the Nile at birth. These orders were not always carried out. Soon after the orders were issued a Hebrew child, Moses, is born and his mother is eager to save him from death. She takes a wicker basket and makes it watertight with tar, puts the child into it and sets the little boat on the river. A princess, the daughter of Pharaoh, happens to discover the baby in the Nile and saves him from drowning. Moses grows under the care of his own mother, who serves as his nurse. When he is old enough to return to Pharaoh’s palace, he is given the education of a prince and he could easily have spent his lifetime in wonderful luxury. But Moses always remembered his childhood with his Hebrew mother.

Somehow, he is attracted to the Hebrew slaves. He has great pity for their unhappy condition and suffering. Moses becomes more involved with them when he kills an Egyptian, in defense of a Hebrew slave. Word comes to Pharaoh about Moses’ effort to help the Hebrews and he is angered. But before the Egyptian ruler can punish him, Moses escapes. He finds refuge in Midian, in the Sinai Peninsula. There, Moses becomes a simple shepherd. He marries and leads a peaceful life for a number of years.

Suddenly, Moses has a vision. He is tending his flock one day near Mount Horeb. A voice speaks to him out of a burning bush. Moses is given a mission: He must return to Egypt to liberate the Israelite slaves. Moses is at first reluctant to take on this dangerous assignment because he is a modest man and questions, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, that anyone should listen to me?” But he is assured that it is G-d’s wish that the Israelites be freed and that his mission will be successful with the assistance of G-d.

Moses returns to Egypt where he meets his older brother Aaron becomes Moses’ partner in the effort to free the unfortunate slave people. The two men come before Pharaoh and they make a request. Let the Israelites rest from their work and celebrate a festival. Pharaoh is angered. He considers Moses and Aaron to be trouble makers and he orders them to stop meddling. To prove his point, Pharaoh orders harder labor to be demanded of the Israelite slaves. Moses, disappointed over the first frustrating meeting with Pharaoh, complains to G-d. G-d assures Moses that Pharaoh will yet be more than eager to let the Israelites go free.

Haftarah Reading - Isaiah 27.6-28;13, 29.22, 23 The Haftarah is from the Book of Isaiah. The Prophet Isaiah, like

Through music, Shabbat Shira helps create,

sustain and solidify community.

The Jewish collective voice is most powerful and

expressive when joined as one in synagogue

prayer and music.
