It’s time to elect new deacons for the church. Deacon nomination forms are at the wel-
come centers. Each form lists the biblical and church qualifications for a deacon. If you
would like to nominate someone, please pray about it, ask the person you’re considering if
he would be willing to serve if elected, and go for it as God leads. In short, deacons’ lives
should be marked by spirituality, service, and devotion to Christ and the church. A deacon
should be a good example for the rest of us. Thanks for your prayerful attention to this matter.
We’ve got a very exciting thing happening for our parents this coming Sunday. Bill Newton is lead-
ing a Parent Toolbox Seminar. You will learn much about how to be a Christian mom or dad in the
pagan culture in which we live. You are raising your children on a different playing field than when
you grew up. So please come to the seminar. You will gain tools that will help you fulfill God’s
purpose for your life as you raise the children God has given you. I wish I’d have had something like
this when my kids were at home. I can’t encourage you enough to make time for this seminar this
Sunday. You’ll find the details elsewhere in the Messenger.
Is That Really in the Bible? This week we ask that question of the phrase, “Cleanliness is next to
godliness.” Old slogan or Bible? We’ll check it out on Sunday. And as we do, we’ll come to the
Lord’s Table. So let’s gather to worship together then. There’s not one thing better you can do this
Sunday.

Miley, Macklemore & Lewis How to Talk with Your Kids About
Culture & Media (Led by Bill Newton)
Sunday, October 6 5:00-6:00 PM Media has a massive influence upon us. Nowhere is this more evident than with children
and teens. As they are growing, their minds are being shaped by the messages they are
exposed to. As Christian parents we can’t (nor should we) put a protective bubble around
our kids regarding culture and media. Instead, we have a responsibility to teach them how
to correctly engage media & culture. This leads to some interesting questions:
How do we as parents talk with our kids about what they see and hear in the media?
How do we as parents use culture and media as a tool to teach them and shape them
into deeper followers of Christ instead of being affected negatively by those messages
and ideas?
How do we as parents help our kids navigate through the mixed messages they re-
ceive?
Using current culture events from artists like Miley Cyrus and Macklemore & Lewis, this
Family Toolbox Seminar will answer these questions and help to equip parents in how to
engage and discuss culture with their kids.
