Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 27, 2019
Researched by Fr. Vijay Kiran, Assistant Pastor
Evolution of Announcement Books and Bulletins
1917 – 1944 The announcement books were readily available in the religious stationary stores. These blank books were bought and every weekend announcements were written in ink pens. This sample of the outer front cover and hand written page is displayed.
1945 – 1966 By the mid forties, a typewriter was used for most office chores. Some priests also started using the same for personal works. From 1945 onwards, all the announcements were typed and filed every Sunday in a readily available Annoucement Book as it is seen on the left.
1967 – 1997 In 1967, the Sunday bulletin was made available to the people, so that they could read at their convenience in the form of single sheet of paper, both sides typed and duplicated either in black or blue print. Copies were made to distribute to all parishioners. These were in A4 or legal size paper. This was done in the office, by the staff. Samples are on the left side.
1998 – Present In 1998, Msgr. John C. Halloran began printing them in the press with single color. The Pastor’s column appeared along with some ads to cover the cost. In November 2011, Fr. Marcel L. Taillon changed companies and this included full color printing, more ads and the number of pages was increased from 4 to 8 with J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. The present format is seen on the left. Also, bulletins became available online.

Men’s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 16 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It’s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall!

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Scripture has always held God’s law to be the path to human happiness. In today’s first reading, Ezra the priest reads the scroll of the law to the people returned from exile. They weep--then are joyful. Israel’s relationship with God had always been defined by how they kept and lived God’s law. The author of Psalm 96 likewise praises the law of God as the source of wisdom, joy and enlightenment, purity and justice. In his advice to the bickering Corinthians, Paul points out that, just as God has made all parts of a human body essential for the health of the whole, living as ¶ Christ%s body· requires that each member be recognized as necessary for the good of all. Finally, in Luke’s Gospel Jesus claims that the Spirit is sending him to relieve human suffering. Like Ezra, he is reading from a scroll, proclaiming God’s ¶ law· of mercy to those in need.
