Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 21, 2019
Summer This and That… It was been an active and lively summer here so far in our parish. The parish festival was a huge success. Thanks to all who supported, donated and came. It was a great opportunity for evangelization too. Two new families are now in the parish. I encourage you all to attend our first ever “summer art mission” where Fr. Brendan Thomas, Benedictine will offer three nights at St. Thomas More Church, about three artists and their search for God and its effect on their work. This is a first of its kind, as I share my friend from Wales who will present. Be on the lookout for him at the Masses on the 27th and 28th. Plan to attend the Blood Drive on August 4th at Msgr. Halloran Hall and give the gift of life. Please note the reduction in regular office hours at the parish. I know we can continue to serve you within this new schedule. Try to call between 9 am and 2 pm to schedule masses. I also wanted to make you aware of our staff changes here too. Scott is leaving for Louisiana in a new campus ministry position at LSU. We wish him well. I know this is his parish home and he will often come back to us. We welcome MaryTheresa among us! She will bring her amazing background in education, Catholic school teaching and catechetical formation to our community. Perhaps the biggest change in our staff is that Bishop Tobin has told me that there is no other priest to send to us, meaning I will be the only formally assigned priest here. Of course, the priestly ministry of Msgr. Halloran and Fr. Henry is not only valued, but central to our sacramental life. With no other assistant at this time, I did reduce summer Sunday liturgies by two and daily masses by five. I am concerned for the future. We should remain open to flexibility in the Mass schedule, which will allow for our high standard of liturgy and worship. The Eucharist and Mass are the source and summit of our life as Catholics. I would ask you pray for priestly vocations and pray for us your priests, that we may serve you with zeal and joy.
Fr. Taillon Pastor

Men’s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 16 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It’s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall!
Prayer Chain Ministry If you know someone who would like extra needed prayers , please call Jean at 783-3403 and express your request. Volunteers are needed for this important ministry. Please call Jean, if you can volunteer to pray.
Thank you to Our Lady’s Guild and parishioners of St. Thomas More Parish for sponsoring and
supporting the Mother of Life Rose Sale. $1,850.00 was raised and will be used to help our clients with housing in a safe environment, parenting and supportive classes. As members of our Mother of Life Center’s family, please be assured of our prayers for all of you.
Blessings, Colleen Earnshaw Counselor/Client Advocate

July 23rd: Book of Job, Chs. ~ 6-11; Dialogue continues Our topic this summer will be the Theology of Suffering: the Book of Job. We will locate this important book within the development of Wisdom literature in the Old Testament. We will also read excepts from St. John Paul II’s apostolic letter, Salvifici Doloris (On the Saving Nature of Suffering). We will find out that Job was anything but patient! So what was he? We will find out! Group meets every Tuesday in July and August following the 9AM Mass in the parish hall. Hope to see you there. Just come with a Bible.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
How do we bring balance and joy to our lives of prayer and service to our loving God? In the Gospel today, Jesus tells Martha that her concern about doing the right thing as dictated by Jewish tradition might not be the best use of her energies. Her sister, Mary, who sits in rapt attention at Jesus’ feet, should not be rebuked. Is Jesus trying to show Martha that she needs to make time for her spiritual nourishment? Abraham and Sarah in the first reading seem to be just like Martha. And yet Abraham’s eager welcome and joyful serving of his “visitors” seems almost spiritual. How like Paul, in the second reading, rejoicing in his service to the gospel! We hear in the psalm that those who do justice will live in the Lord’s presence. Prayer and service--what greater joy could there be?
