MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of St. Mark’s Church is to embrace diversity,

practice hospitality, and make known Christ’s presence in Word and Deed.

21 January 2018 Third Sunday after Epiphany

VOLUNTARY Georg Frideric Handel

from MESSIAH, O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion LESLIE PROCTER, MEZZO SOPRANO

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion; arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. ANNOUNCEMENTS

-The Assembly will please stand-

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P. Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the

heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. C. Amen. P. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another.

Loving God, C. we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our

own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we may live again as your children. Amen.

P. Even when we have done wrong, your love, O God, leads us toward

what is right. Even when we mess up, your light brightens our darkness. Your compassion and mercy are everlasting. Therefore, I now declare: Your sins are forgiven, in the name of Jesus Christ + our Lord, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

THE HYMN

GREETING P. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C. And also with you. CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY P. Let us pray:

Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C. Amen.

-The Assembly will please sit-

FIRST READING: Jonah 3:1-5, 10

1The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. 10When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Lector: The word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 62:5-12

5For God alone I | wait in silence; truly, my hope | is in God. 6God alone is my rock and | my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall nev- | er be shaken. 7In God is my deliverance | and my honor; God is my strong rock | and my refuge. 8Put your trust in God al- | ways, O people, pour out your hearts before the one who | is our refuge. 9Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath; those of low estate can- | not be trusted. Placed on the scales together they weigh even less | than a breath. 10Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no | empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your | heart upon it. 11God has spoken once, twice | have I heard it, that power be- | longs to God. 12Steadfast love belongs to | you, O Lord, for you repay all according | to their deeds. SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

29Brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, 31and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Lector: The word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

-The Assembly will please stand-

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. Alleluia. (Mark 1:15)

GOSPEL: Mark 1:14-20 The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” 16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

THE HYMN

CREED We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Petition response: Have mercy, O God. PEACE

LAMB OF GOD

DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION MOTET T. Frederic Candlyn

Thee We Adore Thee we adore, O hidden Savior, Thee, Who in Thy sacrament dost deign to be; both flesh and spirit at Thy presence fail, yet here Thy presence we devoutly hail. O blest memorial of our dying Lord, Who living Bread to men doth here afford! O may our souls forever feed on Thee, and Thou, O Christ, forever precious be. Fountain of gladness, Jesu, Lord and God, cleanse us, unclean, with Thy most cleansing blood; increase our faith and love, that we may know the hope and peace which from Thy presence flow. O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see, may what we thirst for soon our portion be, to gaze on Thee unveiled, and see Thy face, the vision of Thy glory and Thy grace. (St. Thomas Aquinas, translated by James R. Woodford)

NUNC DIMITTIS

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A. Let us pray:

God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C. Amen. BLESSING

P. Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.

C. Amen. THE HYMN

Please refer to the following page. DISMISSAL A. Go in peace. Serve the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. VOLUNTARY

Improvisation on AN DIE FREUDE

Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling Tune: AN DIE FREUDE 1 Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, “Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting, who will bear the sheaves away?” Loud and long the master calls you; rich reward he offers free. Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I. Send me, send me”? 2 If you cannot speak like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, you can tell the love of Jesus; you can say he died for all. If you cannot rouse the wicked with the judgment’s dread alarms, you can lead the little children to the Savior’s waiting arms. 3 If you cannot be a watchman, standing high on Zion’s wall, pointing out the path to heaven, off’ring life and peace to all,

with your prayers and with your bounties you can do what God demands;

you can be like faithful Aaron, holding up the prophet’s hands. 4 Let none hear you idly saying, “There is nothing I can do,” while the multitudes are dying and the master calls for you. Take the task he gives you gladly; let his work your pleasure be. Answer quickly when he calls you, “Here am I. Send me, send me!”
