THIMUN 2015

In January 2015, 22 outstanding young New Zealanders who have been chosen to represent New Zealand at the largest and most prestigious Model United Nations conference in the world will set out with their volunteer directors on a three-week whirlwind study tour. This tour will canvas world sites and diplomatic missions, immersing the students in various cultures.

UN Youth Aotearoa New Zealand, the organisation behind the trip, has been sending a delegation to The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) since 2000. The New Zealand Schools’ Delegation has built an outstanding reputation at the THIMUN conference as being one of the best delegations out of the 4000 students who attend the conference every year.

Many of the trip’s alumni have gone on to become leaders and change-makers in New Zealand. Many now work at top law firms, are active in other non-profit organisations, government institutions, or are current senior officeholders in our organisation. The alumni include a Rhodes Scholar, a Prime Minister’s Business Scholar, and a NZ Education and Scholarship Trust Top Scholar.

This is an unprecedented opportunity for your organisation to contribute towards the development and enrichment of New Zealand’s future generation of leaders, and to associate your business and brand with UN Youth Aotearoa New Zealand – one of New Zealand’s leading civic education organisations.

OVERVIEW

3

THIMUN 2015

UN Youth New Zealand is a youth led, volunteer-run charitable organisation that educates young New Zealanders about the United Nations and international affairs.

We believe that by educating young people about global issues and empowering them with the skills and knowledge to make a difference, we are inspiring the next generation of New Zealand’s leaders.

We achieve this by providing internationally recognised opportunities for youth to express themselves and provide solutions for future.

These opportunities are provided through running local, regional and national Model UN conferences – as well as our flagship to THIMUN.

THIMUN 2015

THE HAGUE INTERNATIONAL

MODEL UNITED NATIONSOur THIMUN tour condenses what it means to be a global citizen into a three-week study tour. Our delegates are given the opportunity to experience the value of cultural diversity and global connection.

BACKGROUND THIMUN is the largest and most prestigious Model UN conference in the world. Attended by over 4000 students from all over the world, the week long conference simulates United Nations institutions including the General Assembly. Delegates represent member states of the United Nations and debate resolutions based on the foreign policy and perspective of their particular state.

THE THIMUN CONFERENCE At the conference, delegates are given a taste of what it takes to forge solutions to global issues and negotiate and debate solutions to world issues with students of wide-ranging backgrounds, cultures and views.

THE EDUCATIONAL TOUR Through a significant number of visits to diplomatic missions and world heritage sites across North America and Europe, the delegates develop an understanding of the values, forces, and institutions at play in their communities. This allows our delegates to build the necessary skills to engage with their communities and make a difference. Many THIMUN alumni go on to become active in civic organisations, or become officeholders in UN Youth contributing to the organisation as volunteers.

THIMUN 2015

22 outstanding young leaders were chosen to be a part of the New Zealand delegation to THIMUN at the New Zealand Model United Nations conference in July 2014. They were selected after a rigorous application and interview process during the conference, and the calibre of the delegation truly reflects this. The 22 delegates represent the smartest and most brilliant minds of the youth we have in New Zealand.

SUKEY ALLEN (HEAD DELEGATE)I am a Year 13 at Mount Hutt College, which lies in Methven, a small town close to Mount Hutt Ski Area, located in Mid Canterbury. I am Deputy Head Girl, Head of the Ball Committee, and I am involved in many other aspects around my school and community. I have been participating in UN Youth for some time and enjoy engaging and debating with other like-minded students. I am honoured to have been selected as head of delegation for THIMUN 2015. I have always wanted to see the world and become immersed in other cultures; THIMUN will be a phenomenal experience in which I will meet new people and travel the world. I wish to study at Victoria University in Wellington and pursue a future career in diplomacy and the United Nations in which I feel I could make a positive impact on humanity.

MICHAEL BALL - DEPUTY HEAD DELEGATEI don’t have one singular passion, and I also have no idea what I want to do in the future. However I do have a collection of interests and involvements that I am truly passionate about. I love spanish debating, skiing, mathematics and traveling

to name a few. I am also a passionate academic and as Head of Academics for King’s College I am excited to learn as much as I can about just about everything, in this case to do with the global interconnectedness of the world. Lastly I enjoy everything to do with the UN sphere, especially anything to do with communication, global interaction and most importantly just meeting

such a breadth of unique yet like-minded individuals. This is something I find socially, intellectually and inspirationally

rewarding, and taking this to a global scale with THIMUN will be a life-changing experience for me.

As a global citizen, a dedicated student, and a talented speaker, THIMUN 2015 is a logical

and exciting next step for myself, a 17-year-old student at St. Andrews College, in my journey through life. I have been an elected office holder for UN Youth for two years and have attended regional and national conferences since Year 11, demonstrating how important Model UN and sharing my love of it is to me. In addition, I am passionate about sport

and drama, striving to do my best when representing my school or region. I am particularly dedicated to debating, representing

my school, region, and New Zealand on the world stage. THIMUN has been my dream for a long time, something that will help me reach my goals and potential as a human being. I would love it if you helped me realise this dream.

As Deputy Head Girl at Westlake Girls High School, I work to serve students through encouragement and empowerment. Service is a great passion of mine, having supported many NGOs and charities throughout my high school years such as Amnesty International, World Vision and The New Zealand Heart Foundation. Other areas of school life I have been involved in include being a tutor in the Smart Swans programme, debating, Stage Challenge, Philosophy club, dragon boating and more. My involvement with UN Youth has provided me with unparalleled experiences, thus I have worked to give back to the organisation in my role as a High School Ambassador. I am thrilled and incredibly honoured to be taking my experiences to an international level, representing mighty New Zealand on the world stage. Attending THIMUN will provide me with insight into the importance of global citizenship, heighten my appreciation for diversity and allow me to establish lasting friendships with potential world leaders.

I am in my last year of high school at Mt Roskill Grammar, where I am a Prefect and High School Ambassador on behalf of UN

Youth New Zealand. Ever since my first immersion with the organisation in early 2013, I have never looked back and am so passionate about the life skills the organisation has given me and other aspiring young global citizens. I believe that where an opportunity arises or presents itself, one must grasp that opportunity with both hands. This is why I enjoy a wide range

of both sporting and extra-curricular activities both inside and outside of school – including being a pianist and badminton

player. I am so excited to see what opportunities THIMUN will offer me. I thoroughly believe that it will be the opportunity of a life

time where I will be able to make personal relationships with those who I can expect to find down similar career paths in the future.

In my final year in Rangitoto College at Auckland, I am currently a student representative in our cultural team. Involving myself in

a host of extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities, one of my main passions is music. I am part of the school’s chamber choir and recently performed as a lead in our school show. I have no idea what I am going to do at university and hope that my involvement in THIMUN will give me a better direction as to which path to take. However, what I look forward

to the most will be meeting likeminded people from all over the world.

I believe that the value of art comes from experiencing it, and that personally experiencing art is far more valuable than through photos and textbooks. Because of this, I am incredibly excited about having the opportunity to see and learn from some of the famous artistic and architectural landmarks throughout the world through the 2015 THIMUN Delegation. I am very passionate and involved with art and the arts, taking a lead creative role in Christ College’s production of Cats this year. Next year I hope to study Architecture at Victoria, and following that, Fine Arts at Elam. I am currently Year 13 at Christ’s College, and my favourite subjects are Physics, Art History and Painting.

I am a Year 13 student at Tauranga Girls’ College in the Bay of Plenty, and my biggest interests are science and debating.

As well as being the CEO of a Young Enterprise team, I am the environmental committee prefect at school and have been

passionate about sustainability from a young age. In the 17 years that make up my life, I have never left Australasia, so I am completely

blown away by the exciting prospects that the THIMUN trip has to offer, and am honoured to be able to represent New Zealand on the world stage. Given my passion for science and debating, I hope to pursue a career in scientific advisory for either the New Zealand government or the United Nations.

Just a girl from a small town nestled in the Eastern foothills of the Wairarapa; I am thrilled to be joining a long line of St. Matthew’s

Collegiate girls on the experience of a lifetime as part of the New Zealand Delegation to THIMUN 2015. Taking on the roles of Service Prefect and Cobham House Leader, at school I enjoy developing my leadership skills and pursuing a love of learning, while after hours I can be found at work writing a

monthly column for a local paper. I have always enjoyed the strong sense of community that small town living offers and

often pitch in with local fundraising efforts. However, I am equally excited to have been offered this wonderful opportunity to expand

my horizons and see what I can contribute to the rest of the world.

I am in my final year at Rangitoto College in Auckland. During my time here, I have had the honour of representing the school in a variety of activities including debating, orienteering and dance. In future, I would like to pursue studies in law and another area that I hope this trip will aid in making clearer. I have been involved with UN Youth since the beginning of 2013, attending regional and national events, as well as being appointed one of the two High School Ambassadors at my college this year. In this role, it has been my absolute pleasure to facilitate events where fellow students could experience all that UN Youth has to offer. I am truly looking forward to THIMUN 2015 and the life-changing experience I am sure it will be. I hope this amazing opportunity will equip me to make a real and profound difference in this world – all with the added bonus of meeting other incredible young people from around the world.

I am a Year 13 student at Westlake Boys High School on Auckland’s North Shore. I have a passion

for school and community service, taking on roles as a prefect, a local council youth representative, a peer

tutor, and a member of the Students Against Driving Drunk committee. My academic pursuits are centered primarily around commerce, as the managing director of a Young Enterprise company, and a former New Zealand representative to the International Trade Challenge. I am an avid reader, and I am constantly keeping up to date with the latest in global current affairs. THIMUN 2015 is set to be a fantastic experience, and I look forward to representing New Zealand at both a professional and personal level.

THIMUN 2015

I am unbelievably excited to have been selected to represent New Zealand at THIMUN 2015. I am currently in Year 13 at Lincoln High School in the Selwyn District, where I am the Student Head of Debating and an active member of school life. I am self-motivated and dedicated,

striving to succeed in everything I do. I attended my first Model UN event in Year 8 and haven’t looked back since. I am a UN Youth High

School Ambassador and take pride in my role of spreading the fantastic things the organisation offers. I am looking forward to visiting the UN Headquarters in New York, where I hope to learn extensively about what could possibly be my future career.

I am currently a Year 13 study at Albany Senior High School in the good old City of Sails – Auckland. I am one of seven Head Students, with sport as my portfolio. Though my interests are in sport (in particular tennis and volleyball), I have been know to stretch into other facets of life including visual arts and design, music, and of course, Model UN. In spite of the fact that I have only been involved with UN Youth for a year and a half, I have attended seven events and have loved every single moment of them. To be selected to represent New Zealand as a part of the delegation to THIMUN 2015 is an incredible honour and privilege. I hope that this trip will help me get a better perspective of the world – something that I believe the only way to obtain is by experiencing first hand. I am also looking forward to meeting all different kinds of people from all walks of life. I first found out about THIMUN almost two years ago and to finally have the opportunity to go is something that I will treasure forever.

I am from Windy ‘no place better on a good day’ Wellington. I am a Year 13 prefect at Scots College, a school at which I have had

many opportunities such as being part of a national winning Underwater Hockey side. I also enjoy the arts having taken part in several productions, most notably the musical FAME; and being a part of several musical performances either singing or drumming. I study International Baccalaureate, which among other things, has taught me how to spell Baccalaureate! My

journey to THIMUN has been a two year love affair with UN Youth. Having participated in several events both regionally

and nationally, I am excited to take my Model UN skills to the international stage. I also think it will be a great way to move into

the next stage of my life which will hopefully be studying politics, economics and philosophy overseas.

THIMUN 2015

I am a High School Ambassador for my school in Christchurch – Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, where I am passionately involved in all

aspects of the community and hold a number of leadership positions. Outside of school, I am widely immersed in volunteer work and pride myself on involvement and engagement, having recently attained my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. As I intend to pursue a career in international or humanitarian

law, I am extremely grateful to have been selected for THIMUN, which I believe will provide me with a myriad of opportunities

to get closer to my ultimate goal of one day working for the International Court of Justice, as well as allowing me to continue my avid passion for model diplomacy and

debate. I am also very excited to meet like-minded people from all around the globe and to create life-long friendships with my

fellow delegates.

I am a Year 13 student at Rongotai College in Wellington. I have been involved in UN Youth for

two years and serve as a UN Youth High School Ambassador at my college where I am a prefect. A debater, cellist and photographer, I am passionate about the Model United Nations

environment and the understanding of world issues it develops. I intend to study law and international relations at university next year. I am honoured to have been selected for the 2015 THIMUN delegation and am incredibly excited about the opportunities the trip offers both in being able to gain insight into pressing global issues and the chance to meet other like-minded students and people from around the world.

Born and bred Indonesian, I am now a Year 13 student at Macleans College in Auckland. My passion lies in developmental work, advocacy and commerce. I have been

involved in various NGOs such as being a Youth Ambassador for UNICEF NZ and am a strong public speaker through both

speeches and debating. I am heavily involved in service activities at my school and partake in business-related competitions. I strive

to challenge myself and take initiative in my life, with THIMUN being a prime example of this. The trip correlates with my goal of working for the

United Nations as it fuels my curiosity about the power dynamics of the world.

They say the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in the culture, and similarly, I hope to learn the ‘language’ of the United Nations through THIMUN 2015. As the Service Prefect at Westlake Girls High School, I have a deep passion for contributing to the community. I have been actively involved in debating and Model UN since 2012, winning the Rotary Model United Nations Assembly this year as the delegate of North Korea. I believe THIMUN will be an incredible opportunity to both meet thousands of students around the world with the same interests as me, and form strong bonds with the wonderful people in the New Zealand Delegation. I look forward to where my experiences will take

me in the future.

As a student in my final year of college, attending THIMUN in 2015 will allow me to begin branching out into the ‘real-world’ before continuing my studies at a tertiary level. As a student with a keen devotion to English and the Social Sciences, and the motivation to

become a lawyer or a diplomat, attending this prestigious event is a chance for me to further develop and learn on a personal

and educational scale. I am currently completing the International Baccalaureate programme at my college, with my strengths lying in

English and film studies, as well as having an interest in areas such as philosophy. I am the deputy head of my house, have helped run the junior Model UN programme at my school, and have a strong involvement with Wellington Regional Debating.

I believe THIMUN will be a life changing event for me. It is the culmination of two years, seven model UN events and countless new things learned. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to develop my skills on a global level. Currently I am in Year 13 at Scots College in Wellington. At school, I enjoy a range of things from academics to music and cultural pursuits. I am a member of the Scots College Pipe Band and have participated extensively in both regional and national competitions. I excel academically, achieving NCEA level one and two at excellence as well as Scholarship Statistics in Year 12. I love learning new languages, and I study French at school whilst also participating in the Wellington Alliance Française organisation. The experiences and friendships I will gain from attending THIMUN will be invaluable in launching my dream of a global career.

Hailing originally from cultural hotpot Singapore, I’m currently an international boarder at Christ’s College in Christchurch finishing up Year 13 after four and a half fantastic years in

New Zealand. At school, I am actively involved in choir and drama and am a school prefect. I have been a member of UN

Youth since Year 9 with the Canterbury General Assembly, and I have not looked back since; the whole experience culminating in

representing America and the Russian Federation at a national level, and of course being selected for the THIMUN delegation. I await the trip with

barely contained excitement – a chance to bring my favourite extra-curricular activity to an international level, alongside the awesome people I have met over the years at the conferences.

I am finishing my time in Christ’s College this year and am incredibly excited to end my tuition as part of the New Zealand Delegation to THIMUN 2015. I am heavily involved in debating and am part of the team which won the Canterbury Regional Debating Championships. I have been involved with UN Youth for two years, beginning in the Canterbury Model UN and hopefully continuing into the future. I am hoping to work overseas and believe that this experience will thoroughly assist me in my endeavour to be a worldlier person. I also hope that the friendships I make will last a lifetime.

The delegate fee for THIMUN 2015 is $7,600. Since the THIMUN trip is entirely organised and staffed by volunteers, this fee is almost entirely comprised of the actual costs incurred on the trip, and the volunteer staff personally contribute towards their portion of the costs.

By providing financial assistance, you will enable us to reduce the financial barriers of the tour to promising young New Zealanders and help make the trip a more enriching experience for the delegates. We ask your organisation to stand alongside UN Youth in providing development opportunities for New Zealand’s emerging leaders and encourage them to be passionate, intelligent, well-informed, and confident global citizens.

An OECD paper was conducted to see how helping an organisation like UN Youth could benefit a business:

• 94 per cent of New Zealanders think it is a good idea for companies to support a charity ororganisation

• 84 per cent continue to think more highly of companies that support charities or organisa-tions

• 57 per cent would buy from a company that supports a worthy cause even if they areslightly more expensive

• 62 per cent say they actually have bought from company that supports a worthy causeeven if they are slightly more expensive!
