yond. We have d01le weil s~far" b~t - we have not gone far , enough., We,must press on to otherfields, whose ripeness appeals 'for harvesters< " , " ' " ' , , , ' , ': With such a spirit as this' manifested in the ficldsabroad, of course, we are not surprised, to get 'the glad tidings that last year wE:! baptised 16,568. This is the largest ,number ever reported ou our foreign ,fields.

'This has 'been a year of great revivals. Think ofa revival experience like' this reported in A:frica by one of our missionaries, when 'a whole village came to Christ: "One of our Baptist pastors went there and haptised 1,444, and another thousand \ira's seeking

,baptism. ' They had left their idols and they; wanted a true and living God, but they did not know how to .go about finding Him."

, Will not' Southern Baptists ponder, prayerlully over the clos-,jng sentence used by this missionary: "They ,did not know how to go ab0l!t findini' Him?" There aremultitude.S, countless hosts, in all lands who "do, not h."!lOW how to find Him." We know how to find Him. What will happen to them and to us if we withdraw and withhold the blessed news from them? We have the secret that will fill all the world with joy, and cause it to ring with th:e praise of God. Shall we halt? Shall we turn our back on the wor)d? Shall we call home the messengers we have sent out; or shall we'maintain and reenforce them? '

"We are now confronted witll the most critical emergency the Board has ever faced. Our income 'always drops off ser;iouslyi:;l the summer and early fall months. In the past, during this lean period, we have gone to the banks and borrowed money to tide, UH aver. When our income revived, we repaid the banks. During the last two years our income has not picked up sufficiently to; enable us to repay the bankers, and 1O'e have be~n forced to add the bor-rowings for current expenses to our old debt, The bankers have notified us that we cannot borrow melre money, yet during the coming lean period we must he. prepared to meet promptly the authorized drafts which come in from our missionaries from / all over the world. If we should fail to, meet one of these drafts ,when it is presented, the credit of our Board will be ruined. What can we do?

In response to this statement of the Foreign Mission Board the recent Southern Baptist Convention appealed to th'3 Baptists of the South to raise $300,000.00 during June and July to relieve the disttessing emergency of the Home and Foreign Mission Boards. Of this sum $190,000.00 is for Foreign Mission Board and $110,000.00 for the Home Mission Board. This money is to be used to meet the regular expenses of the Foreign Mission Board such as salaries, of the missionaries, both native and foreign. The life' of this Board hangs ':n the balance of Southern Baptist devotion to this cause.

    THOMAS A. BELL, Chairmall, G. W. YOUNG. O. A. HENDERSON.

    ~. :MmuTESOF TRIRTY-THIRDANNUAL SESSION

In the Octob~r issue ~f "Royal S~rvice" :the W. M.U. Monthly" puhlhlhed in Binningham, Alabama" we found ,some interesting facts and figures in an article entitled "Bullets frm the Enemy's Guns" Many dangerous bullets fly from the guns of the ~iquor forces for the purpose of destroying prohibition, sentiment in our country. Many foolish assertions are made by people who can give no better proof of their V'Crity than that "they 'Say" thus and so. Le~ us examine some of the things, which "they say" to see:if they arewfIt f-aunded f~cts or merely "wet nonsense." " ~" " ' , ' ,', ,

"They say" that there is more 'drinking now' than before 'pro-hibition. Those who can remember conditions twelve, fifteen and twenty years ago know that this statement is absolutely false. Be-fore PI;ohibition, drunk ,men ~ere seen almost' every, day on the 'streets, while' now the public drunkard is a very unusual sight., Accordin~ to United States statistics there is 64 per cent less intox-icating drinks consumed today than before prohibition. Evangeline' Booth says: "In New York Cjty, under the old system from 1,200 to 1,300 dz:unks were brought into the Salvation Army's hOl'!'les!every

    'night. Today with prohibition, the number does' not average', more than seven or eight." In the old ,days liquor was shipped from big distilleries into the larger ,cities by railroads and in such quantities that the wholesalers' couldn't stor~ it in their'large warehouses; now liquor comes in at night in autqs. It is unreasonable to believe that cars can smuggle in as much as ,railroads carried openly;

With 'these facts before you decide for yourself whether or not mor;~ liquor is being, drunk today than ever before.

"They Bay" that more young people are drinking than before prohibition days. 'Contrary to this, educators in colleges and high schools of the country are almost unanimous in saying that behavior conditions are better and that th

The plan of financi~g the Service' a~d Annuity, department comes from three different sources. The members, the church, and contingent receipts." The pastor who becomes a member"of this Se:wice Annuity department cooperates with the church in paying re.gular .monthly installments a small percentage of his salary. 1. That our Sunday School and B. Y. P. U. forces give their time during the comirxg convention year to rural church'e~ or churches they have not served in the pa~t two years. The only ex· ception to this rule being for time ~pent in cDnventions, confer·,mce~, assDciatiDns and assemblies. . ,

    2. That the State Sunday SchoDl ,and B. Y., P. U. Secretary work through the associational executive committee or state board member in securing dateH in churches where their work is most needed.. _

    3. We believe that the work of this department has been infinitely useful in promoting the KingdDm work throughDut our great State and especially within the church~s where its workers have served. We believe that the department should be maintained in its entirety and that by its- assistance tD the rural churches our State missiDnary work will be greatly advanced.

,In a digest of ihe thirty-two letters from the churches of this assoCiation it is gratifying to ~note that twenty-six of 'them have had revival s2rnces during the yeat'. Two churches, New Hopeful and Pleasant Groye; ~report two revival services. The digest also revealed that there were, added to ,the thirty-two churches two hundred'2ighty-seven by baptism: one hundred twenty-six by letter, ap.d seYente€n by statement. A further study. reveals that four churches report not a single baptism. Some others but one or two.

Lloyd 'George said, "Now it is either Ohrist or chaos,2ithe)' the Kingdom of God or world revolution." We know the chaotic conditions of the world and we know that unly Christ can quiet and bring peace to the throbbing hearts of the nations.

Dtring the past ~nonths of financial difficulties in home and business and church W2 have again learried how to be good neighbors. We nave learned how to divide our meagre earnings with th03e less fortunate. 'But being good neighbors is not all that God wants. He wants us to come back to our first love, even Christ Jesus. \Vh'2n we d'o come liuck to Him it will be marked by a new day in evangelis,m. When one loves he serves and when we com2 with loving hearts to our Christ we will serve Him. '

, We face the future. 'We mus-t face it,with mor'e than ,a cup of 'cold water and'a bit of br2ad for the unfortunate. We must face it with an earnest desire to give to every lo,:t soul the story of Him who is the Water of Life and the Bread of Life. V'ie must give to a lost world ~he Name of Him who can bring p'~ace to tr(lubled hearts.

"We kn'ow of a world that is sunk in 5]un11e, Of hearts that faint and tire. We know a Name, a Name, a Name, That can set such worl d on fire."

We must, be evangelistic in telling the old old story or our day of usefulD'2ss is over and His blessing cannot be' given.

We love to talk -about missions. Have we forgotten tllat mis-sions be,gin at hom-e? A man or woman will give ,money to send missionaries to foreign ,fields and yet that same person will never tak2 the time to talk to a lost soul about God's gift and plan in redemption. Is it not time to call fol' more home mis3ions at home? Is it not time fOl'everyone who knows Jesus as a personal Savior to be busy telling the story to the lost about us?

, Two thousand years ago the Teach2r gave unto us a divine example in evangelism, that is, the personal touch. It is the touch needed now by every preacher, by' every d'2acon, by every church of-ficer, and every Sunday School teacher, and evel'y person who 1ll'0-fesses to know Him in Salvation.

, Your committee calls this assembled body, representing the thirty-eight churches of the Association, to a new da.y in evallgelism.

REPORT ON PERIODICALS' Baptists' have learned the power of the printed page and in

the -effort to keep o,ur 'peopl'2 infonned and inspired our Denomination has placed its periodicals within the reach of every church m!ffllbel'.

It is of tremendous ~mportance to keep b2fore our people'the right ,kind of literature and to encourage them to read it, for the-ch:lracter, of literature' influences and largely detennines the chat:ac-tJer and the mind of the person who reads it:

The Holy Bible contains a, store of treasures and in it will always be found a message from God to all mankind. It tells of the plan of salvation and gives the rule of life and practice. It is the

. inspired Word of God to man and we prayerfully commend a careful and systematic study of the Bible that We may be "wise unto salvation." , .

The literature from our Sunday School Board and our own Florida Baptist Witness contains infonnation and inspiration that' is needed by every Baptist. We ,believe that every member should be an infonned member and this cannot be accomplished unJ.'2ss one reads these periodicals. We suggest that churches that do not have our Baptist State paper in its budget appoint some rasponsible mem-ber of that church to enlist more subscribers in the effort to keep our ,people better infonned as to kingdom affairs in OUl' State and Southln1)d. Some that we will talk about, and more, I hope, that we will not know about until we' ll1eet our Lord face to, face. ' , ,

Through prayer 'the lost have h2en s~'led and 'the saved have' been trained that our W. M. U. work may go on. Tlll'ough study the great need. of the mi SSiOI] fields lIa ve been o]wned to us in :1

There is an increase in the number of "visits in His Name," in the distri-bution of Bibles and good ,literature. What is personal, service but loving and giving, sympathy, kindly deeds and service to those about -us. Stewardship has been stre$sed throughout the year and our women are realizing more than ever before that they are stewards Df all, that God has given them. '

In the association we have 13 missionary societies and 20 'young people's organization,s. It is our greatest' ambition to enlist evel'~' church in the association in the :Missional'Y Union. To lJave a full graded union ill 'every church. SillCE jJlE, futul'e of OUl" churches depends entirely upon our young' people and the children of today will he the leaders of tomorrow, we can realize how essential it is that they be trained for the work. ;What task could be more impor-tant than training our, boys and girls through the graded organizations of the W. They arc taught Bible study, mission study, illld how to be good slcwards of personality, time, talents and money. As we mould life today and tomorrow and the day after, we shape dGstinies that are Jellthless.

Another ambition is that more of our womell take our mis-si9nary, magazineS, that as a whole we might be bette]' informed.-That we may increase our spiritual knowledge and give us a greater passion for lost souls. That we might be so k;ldelJ that. we would say with the poet - '

Without our educational institutions we should soon be without a leadership trained in sympathy with our doctl'ineH, ideals and policies, and, without such leadership our denomination would inevitably lo~e its prestige and power.

The Baptist~ of the past have left us a noble heritage in the system of schools 'and colleges that they have founded, operated and endowed. Several of their efforts on the surface, seem to have failed, but as we look a bit more carefully into, Christian development we discover that even those schools whiCh have ceased to be, have written their, history indelibly in the records of' Christian progress.

Just a little glimpse into what Southern Baptists are now doing in the field of Christian Education.

We have five Theological ,schools, with an attendance last year of 882, a faculty of '73 440 ministerial stud'€nts and 260 student voluntee~s, property valUe of $5,000,000 and endowment of $2,500,000.

We have 29 senior colleges and universities with an em'oli-ment last year of 12,012 in regular sessions and 6,10'7 in summer se~sions with faculties of 858, ministerial student!! '789, student volun-
