I’ll still cling to that old rugged cross.

I’ll still cling to that old rugged cross.

 In the cross

 In the cross

 Be by glory ever.

&Til my ra#tured soul shall find

 'est beyond the river.

 I believe

 I believe

 I believe

 In that old rugged cross

NARRATOR:  The old rugged cross. I think

I’ve probably sung that hymn a thousandtimes – especially at this time of year

when we think about the cross, what it

meant then, and what it still means today.

I am so thankful that the story of Easter

doesn’t end at the cross – that the story

of Easter continues all the way to the

empty tomb where Jesus raised from the

dead to offer you and me the promise of

eternal life with im.

I believe that the entire earth must have

celebrated the moment that the resurrected

!avior, the "ncient of #ays, the $reator

and %iver of &ife, triumphed over death

and rose from the tomb to walk among us

once more.

'ut at glorious as that picture is, itwouldn’t be complete without the shadow of

the old rugged cross – the place where

Jesus sacrificed imself for you and for

me. is resurrection is made all the more

glorious by the painful reality of the

cross.

I can’t imagine how confused is disciples

and followers must have been in those

terrible days of is trial, crucifi(ion

and death. )hat was it like for *eter, or

John, or James to know that Jesus – their

friend and teacher – had died such a

horrible death, and that all they had left

were the memories+

I think in they probably relived in their

minds every last moment they spent with

im, trying desperately to find meaning in

what had happened.

The last intimate gathering of Jesus and

is disciples took place in Jerusalem,

where they had gathered to celebrate

*assover – one of the most sacred of all

Jewish holidays. The event was a somber

one – the east of the *assover

commemorates the time when %od freed the

Israelites from bondage in Egypt. In the

last of a series of plagues %od rained on

the tyrannical *haraoh who had enslavedthe Israelites, %od sent death across the

face of Egypt to kill the first-born of

every household and every living thing.

The Israelites were spared only if they

smeared the blood of a spotless lamb on

the door posts of their homes. %od

promised that when #eath passed through

Egypt, e would see the blood of the lamb

and pass over the houses of is people.

It was then, and is now, one of the most

powerful symbols of %od’s mercy and grace.

"nd Jesus and is disciples had gathered

to share the *assover meal – a meal Jesus

knew would be is last with the twelve men

Peter , the big, impulsive fisherman. )henhe first met Jesus, his name was !imon –

but Jesus would change it to *eter, which

means 10ock2 and proclaim – 1/pon this

rock, I will build my kingdom.2 *eter and

John made the arrangements for this final

gathering of the &ord’s disciples.

Matthew , who is also called &evi, probably

seemed a strange choice for one of Jesus’

disciples. " ta(-collector, he served the0oman government, enforcing $aesar’s

revenue laws on the oppressed Jews. The

Jews hated and despised these servants of

the 0oman government, and believed they

were traitors and crooks. 'ut 3atthew

answered Jesus’ call to 1follow 3e,2 and

would later write the %ospel of 3atthew.

Nathaniel: )ho is also called 'atholomew

came from $ana of %alilee – where Jesus

performed is first miracle. e was a

follower of John the 'aptist, and it was

introduced to Jesus at 'ethany.

Thomas:  4ften called 1doubting Thomas2

because he needed to feel the nail prints

in Jesus’ hands before he could believe

Jesus had resurrected serves to remind us

all that Jesus calls us in spite of our

doubts and our shortcomings.

Andrew:  The brother of *eter, "ndrew was

also a fisherman by trade, and is known

for introducing people to Jesus. The

'ible says that the first thing "ndrew did

after meeting Jesus was to find *eter and

tell him he’d met the 3essiah.

Philip:  &ike "ndrew and *eter, *hilip wasfrom the town of 'ethsaida. Just as

"ndrew raced to tell his friends about

Jesus, so *hilip sped off to find

5athaniel and announce, 1)e have found the

5a7areth82

Simon:  !imon, a member of the 9ealot sect

of Israelites who favored a military

insurrection against the 0oman government,!imon is one of the most unlikely members

of Jesus’ inner circle. ow could the

former 9ealot serve a 3aster who taught of

walking the e(tra mile and loving our

enemies+ *erhaps he first followed Jesus

because he believed that Jesus would lead

the revolt against 0ome and establish

%od’s kingdom on earth – but along the

way, he would learn that Jesus came to

establish a heavenly kingdom with eternal

value.

John:  The beloved disciple. John was one

him to the %arden of %ethsemane. e would

James:  The son of "lpheus, was present

when John the 'aptist bapti7ed Jesus in

the Jordan river – when %od’s spirit

descended from eaven in the form of a

dove to announce, 1This is my !on, in whom

I am well pleased.2

James= The son of 9ebedee. James was the

brother of John the beloved, and was also

among Jesus’ closest friends. Jesusreferred to these two as 1the sons of

thunder,2 because of their impulsive

natures.

Thaddeus:  &ittle is known about this

member of the disciples. e moved in the

shadows at the edge of the group, yet he,

along with the others, is chosen to gather

here to share the &ord’s last meal on

earth.

And Judas: The traitor.

"s the disciples gathered in the upper

room, the image of Jesus’ triumphal entry

into Jerusalem fresh in their minds, I

imagine they were eagerly awaiting Jesus’

arrival and remembering the many things

they had shared with im during the past

will betray im+ The apostles are

horrified. The painter, &eonardo #a>inci

captured this moment in his famous

painting of the &ord’s !upper.

!ee how the wave of shock and disbelief

radiates outward from $hrist. Jesus, in

the center, is isolated. is face full of

sorrow.

To his left, *hilip has risen to his feet,

leaning closer to Jesus, demanding an

answer.

James has thrown his hands out in horror, while Thomas, behind him, raises a

?uestioning hand. 3atthew leans toward

Thaddeus and !imon, his hands stretched

toward the &ord in disbelief. Thaddeus,

too, looks to !imon for confirmation,

while the 9ealot indicates his frustration

to his two friends.

4n Jesus’ right, John the 'eloved turns

his face away in horror. *eter, ready asalways for action, grasps his knife in one

hand, and John’s shoulder with the other.

Judas, leans as far from $hrist as

possible, grasping his purse of silver

coins – the thirty pieces of silver he

accepted to betray Jesus. In the

painting, a tipped cellar of salt rests at

his right elbow as a symbol of his

treachery.

"ndrew holds his hands up in horror and

looks to Jesus for confirmation, while

James the &ess reaches out to *eter.

5athaniel has leapt to his feet and leans

forward, straining to hear the

conversation of the other twelve.

or centuries, #a>inci’s painting of the

&ord’s !upper has offered a glimpse of one

of the most tragic moments of the &ord’s

life. There in the upper room, among is

Jesus has ust told them that e will be

betrayed by one of them – one of the inner

hesitant, but Jesus insisted, saying, 1It

must be so.2 I watched intently as Jesus

humbled imself. "nd then, to my

ama7ement, and the ama7ement of the entire

crowd, I saw the eaven’s open and the

oly !pirit, in the form of a dove descend

and land on Jesus’ shoulder. "nd then we

heard a voice out of eaven say, 1This is

my 'eloved !on, in who I am well pleased.2

"nd I knew then, as I have known during

the last three years I’ve spent with im –

that e is truly %od’s !on.

'ut everything changed for me that day.

It was a royal occasion for me to

entertain Jesus and is followers in my

complained about Jesus eating with

publicans and sinners, e said, 1Those who

are well have no need of a physician, only

those who are sick.2 "nd e reminded them

I want to record the magnificent sermon epreached about the good news of the

delivered on the mountain in %alilee three

T&ADDE(S: I am Thaddeus, one of the

twelve disciples Jesus called to serve

with im. There are twelve of us whom

Jesus chose to become the cornerstones of

the new kingdom – the %odly kingdom – e

is establishing, ust as the twelve tribes

of Israel were the cornerstones of the old

Jewish kingdom.

I feel so unworthy to be named among the

apostles, but e selected me. I well

remember the day. "fter a night ofprayer, e called us to im and gave us

authority over unclean spirits and the

power to heal every kind of disease and

infirmity. e then commissioned us to go

forth and preach that the Aingdom of

eaven is at hand.

I was in Jerusalem when e gave the great

invitation to 1$ome unto 3e, all you who

labor and are heavy-laden and I will giveyou rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn

of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.

@ou will find rest for your souls, for my

yoke is easy and my burden is light.2

Earlier this week, when 3ary anointed the

&ord’s feet with perfume, I know some

thought it was wasteful, but I remember

thinking that Jesus imself has done that

for each of us. e left eaven to come

here – to be with us, to teach us what it

means to truly love.

$A+ES T&E GREATER: That is why I know in

my heart that Jesus is the true 3essiah –

that e will establish is kingdom.

!ometimes, I have grown frustrated that e

won’t e(ercise the power I know e holds.

4nce, when people in !amaria did not

receive Jesus as I though e should, mybrother and I asked im to call down fire

from heaven to destroy them. e rebuked

us as only e could, and taught us that

%od’s way was always one of love. Is it

any wonder that e sometimes calls us the

1!ons of Thunder.2 )e are both hotheaded

and strong-willed, and sometimes I marvel

that e puts up with us at all.

@et, e is the 4ne who taught me the true

meaning of love – and now, e is about to

be betrayed by one of those whom he loves.

)ho can it be+ )hy should one of us do

such a thing+ I keep thinking, deep in my

own heart, Is it I+ Is it I+

.ETER:  I am *eter. The others sometimes

refer to me as the big fisherman. 3y

brother, "ndrew, and I were fishing on the!ea of %alilee one afternoon, casting our

nets into the water, when Jesus walked by

and said, 1ollow me, and I will make you

fishers of men.2 )e immediately left our

4ne morning e told me to put out into the

deep and let down the nets for a catch.

5ow, I had been fishing all night, and

caught nothing. I have fished the waters

my entire life and know that there are no

fish to be netted once the sun is up. I

tried to e(plain that to Jesus. 13aster,2

I said, 1we have toiled all night and have

caught nothing, but at your word, I will

let down the nets.2

I couldn’t believe what happened ne(t. )e

caught so many fish that we had to summon

other nearby boats to help us contain the

catch. )hen we reached the shore, I fellat Jesus’ feet, and cried out, 1#epart

from me, 4 &ord, for I am a sinful man.2

'ut e took hold of me and called me to be

godliness and ungodliness. 'ut I want to
