THE FIRST HOUR OF THE THEOPHANY Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen. Priest: Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, Who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of Life; come, and dwell in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

People: Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. (THRICE) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy God visit and heal our infirmities for Thy Name’s sake. Lord, have mercy. (THRICE) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen. Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Come, let us worship and fall down before God our King. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God.

PSALM 5 Reader: Give ear to my words, O Lord; give heed to my groaning. Hearken to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to Thee do I pray. O Lord, in the morning Thou dost hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for Thee, and watch. For Thou art not a God Who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with Thee. The boastful may not stand before Thy eyes; Thou hatest all evildoers. Thou destroyest those who speak lies; the Lord abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men. But I through the abundance of Thy steadfast love will enter Thy house, I will worship toward Thy holy temple in the fear of Thee. Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is no truth in

their mouth; their heart is destruction, their throat is an open sepulcher, they flatter with their tongue. Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of their many transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against Thee. But let all who take refuge in Thee rejoice, let them ever sing for joy; and do Thou defend them, that those who love Thy Name may exult in Thee. For Thou dost bless the righteous, O Lord; Thou dost cover him with favor as with a shield.

PSALM 23 (22) Reader: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

PSALM 27 (26) Reader: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me, uttering slanders against me, my adversaries and foes, they shall stumble and fall. Though a host encamps against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arises against me, yet I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple. For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent, He will set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies round about me; and I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! Thou hast said, “Seek ye my face.” My heart says to Thee, “Thy face, Lord, do I seek.” Hide not Thy face from me. Turn not Thy servant away in anger, Thou Who hast been my help. Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation! My father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me up. Teach me Thy way, O Lord; and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yea, wait for the Lord! Choir: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Glory to Thee, O God. (THRICE) Lord, have mercy. (THRICE)

TROPARION FOR THE EVE OF THEOPHANY IN TONE FOUR Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; The River Jordan receded of old by the mantle of Elisha when Elijah ascended into heaven; and the water was separated to this side and that, the wet element turning into a dry path for Him, being truly a symbol of Baptism, by which we cross the path of transient age. Christ appeared in the Jordan to sanctify its waters.

THEOTOKION FOR THE FIRST HOUR IN TONE FOUR Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. What shall we call thee, O full of grace? Shall we call thee heaven because thou didst give rise to the Son of righteousness? Or, shall we call thee paradise because thou didst bring forth the Flower of incorruption? Or, a Virgin because thou didst remain without defilement? Or a pure Mother because thou didst carry in thy holy arms as a son the God of all? Therefore, plead with Him that He may save our souls.

THE IDIOMELA OF THE FIRST HOUR In Tone Eight

Today the nature of water is sanctified, and the Jordan is cloven, and its waters shall be withheld from flowing; the Master being shown washed therein. Verse: Therefore will I remember Thee from the land of the Jordan. Thou didst come to the river like a man, O Christ King. Thou dost hasten, O good One, to receive baptism as a servant at the hands of the Forerunner, for our sins, O Lover of mankind. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Toward the voice in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord. Thou didst come taking the likeness of a servant, seeking baptism, O Thou Who knowest no sin. The waters saw Thee and were afraid, and the Forerunner trembled and cried, saying, How shall the Light seek to be lighted for the lamp? How shall the servant place His hand upon the Master? Wherefore, sanctify me and the waters, O Savior, carrying the sin of the world.

THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: The voice of the Lord is upon many waters. I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength.

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the prophecy of Isaiah. (35:1-10)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: These things doth the Lord say: the wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the lily. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, and fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a hart, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

THE EPISTLE Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Acts of the Apostles. (13:25-33)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: And it came to pass that when John was finishing his course, he said, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. No, but after me One is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.” Brethren, children of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize Him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. Though they could charge Him with nothing deserving death, yet they asked Pilate to have Him killed. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of Him, they took Him down from the tree, and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead; and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now His witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this He has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, “Thou art My Son, today I have begotten Thee.” Priest: Peace be to thee that readest!

Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL Deacon: Wisdom! Attend! Let us hear the Holy Gospel.

Priest: Peace be to all.

Choir: And to thy spirit.

Priest: The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (3:1-6)

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Priest: Let us attend! At that time, John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.” Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and the entire region about the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Reader: Order my steps according to Thy words; and let not every iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the oppression of man; so will I keep Thy precepts. Make Thy face to shine upon Thy servant; and teach me Thy statutes. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, O Lord, that I may praise Thy glory all the day long for the greatness of Thy splendor.

KONTAKION OF THE FOREFEAST OF THEOPHANY IN TONE FOUR Today hath the Lord appeared in the courses of the Jordan, crying to John and saying, Be not dismayed at my Baptism; for I have verily come to save Adam, the first to be created. Choir: Lord, have mercy. (40 times) Priest: O Christ our God, Who art worshipped and glorified at all times at every hour both in heaven and on earth; Who art long-suffering and plenteous in mercy and compassion; Who lovest the just man and showest mercy upon the sinner; and Who callest all men to repentance through the promise of blessings to come; receive, O Lord, at this very hour our supplications, and direct our lives in the way of Thy commandments: sanctify our souls, purify our bodies, set our minds aright, cleanse our thoughts; deliver us from all affliction, trouble, and distress; compass us about with Thy holy angels, that, guided and guarded by them, we may attain unto the unity of the Faith, and to the knowledge of Thine unapproachable glory; for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen Lord, have mercy. (THRICE)

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Choir: More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the

Seraphim. Thou who without stain bearest God the Word; and art truly Theotokos: we magnify thee.

Choir: Bless, Father, in the Name of the Lord.

Priest: God be merciful unto us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, and be merciful unto us.

Choir: Amen.

Priest: O Christ, true Light that lighteth and sanctifieth every man that cometh into the world: may the light of Thy countenance be impressed on our faces, that we may see therewith the unapproachable Light. Order our steps after Thy commandments, by the intercessions of Thine all-pure Mother and all the saints.

Choir: Amen.

THE THIRD HOUR OF THE THEOPHANY Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

PSALM 29 (28) Reader: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His Name; worship the Lord in holy array. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, upon many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful, the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Si’rion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forests bare; and in His temple all cry, “Glory!” The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever. May the Lord give strength to His people! May the Lord bless His people with peace!

PSALM 42 (41) Reader: As a hart longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me continually, “Where is your God?” These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I went with the throng, and led them in procession to the

Page 8: Theophany Royal Hoursww1.antiochian.org/sites/default/files/assets/asset...Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is

house of God, with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my help and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember Thee from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep at the thunder of Thy cataracts; all Thy waves and Thy billows have gone over me. By day the Lord commands His steadfast love; and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. I say to God, my rock: “Why hast Thou forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” As with a deadly wound in my body, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me continually, “Where is your God?” Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my help and my God.

PSALM 51 (50) Reader: Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy great mercy: according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out mine iniquity. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge mine iniquity: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done evil in Thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I was shapen in iniquity: and in sin did my mother conceive me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth: the unclear and hidden things of Thy wisdom Thou hast made clear to me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness: the bones which Thou hast broken shall rejoice. Turn away Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation: and steady me with a guiding spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways: and the impious shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness. O Lord, open Thou my lips: and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For hadst Thou desired sacrifice, I would have given it Thee: Thou delightest not in burnt offerings. Sacrifices to God are a contrite spirit: a contrite and humble heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good will unto Zion: that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offerings: then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

THEOTOKION FOR THE THIRD HOUR IN TONE FOUR Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Thou art the true vine, O Theotokos, bearing the Fruit of life. Thee do we implore. Wherefore, O Lady, intercede thou together with the Apostles and the saints, for the salvation of our souls.

THE IDIOMELA OF THE THIRD HOUR In Tone Eight

Verily, the right hand of the Forerunner, Baptizer, and Prophet, exceeding all Prophets in honor, did tremble when he beheld Thee, O Lamb of God that beareth the sins of the world. And being encompassed with fear, shouted, saying, I dare not touch Thy head, O Word. Sanctify Thou me and enlighten me, O compassionate One; for Thou art the Life, the Light, and the Safety of the world.

In Tone Four Verse: Therefore will I remember Thee from the land of the Jordan. Our God the Trinity hath revealed Himself to us today as free from division; for the Father uttered the clear testimony to His Son, and the Spirit descended from heaven in the likeness of a dove, and the Son bowed His pure head to the Forerunner, and being baptized did save mankind from captivity, since He is the Lover of mankind.

In Tone Five Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. O Life-giving Lord, when Thou didst come to the Jordan in the flesh, in the likeness of man, willing to be baptized to lighten us who have erred, delivering us from all the wiles of the dragon and his gins, since Thou art compassionate, the Father testified of Thee, and the divine Spirit did come to Thee in the likeness of a dove. Dwell Thou, therefore, in our souls, O Lover of mankind.

THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: The waters saw Thee, O God. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters.

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the prophecy of Isaiah. (1:16-20)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: These things doth the Lord say: Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

THE EPISTLE Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Acts of the Apostles. (19:1-8)

Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: And it came to pass, while Apol’los was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to

Page 10: Theophany Royal Hoursww1.antiochian.org/sites/default/files/assets/asset...Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is

believe in the One who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve of them in all. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God.

Priest: Peace be to thee that readest.

Mark. (1:1-8)

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Priest: Let us attend! The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes He Who is mightier than I, the strap of Whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Reader: Blessed is the Lord God. Blessed is the Lord day by day. May God order our salvation.

Our God is a God of salvation.

THE SIXTH HOUR OF THE THEOPHANY Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

PSALM 73 (72) Reader: O God, why dost Thou cast us off for ever? Why does Thy anger smoke against the sheep of Thy pasture? Remember Thy congregation, which Thou hast gotten of old, which Thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of Thy heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where Thou hast dwelt. Direct Thy steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary! Thy foes have roared in the midst of Thy holy place; they set up their own signs for signs. At the upper entrance they hacked the wooden trellis with axes. And then all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers. They set Thy sanctuary on fire; to the ground they desecrated the dwelling place of Thy Name. They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land. We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile Thy Name forever? Why dost Thou hold back Thy hand, why dost Thou keep Thy right hand in Thy bosom? Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. Thou didst divide the sea by Thy might; Thou didst break the heads of the dragons on the waters. Thou didst crush the heads of Leviathan; Thou didst give him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. Thou didst cleave open springs and brooks; Thou didst dry up ever-flowing streams. Thine is the day, Thine also the night; Thou hast established the luminaries

Page 13: Theophany Royal Hoursww1.antiochian.org/sites/default/files/assets/asset...Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is

and the sun. Thou hast fixed all the bounds of the earth; Thou hast made summer and winter. Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs, and an impious people reviles Thy Name. Do not deliver the soul of Thy dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of Thy poor for ever. Have regard for Thy covenant; for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. Let not the downtrodden be put to shame; let the poor and needy praise Thy Name. Arise, O God, plead Thy cause; remember how the impious scoff at Thee all the day! Do not forget the clamor of Thy foes, the uproar of Thy adversaries which goes up continually!

PSALM 77 (76) Reader: I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, that He may hear me. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. I think of God, and I moan; I meditate, and my spirit faints. Thou dost hold my eyelids from closing; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. I consider the days of old, I remember the years long ago. I commune with my heart in the night; I meditate and search my spirit: “Will the Lord spurn for ever, and never again be favorable? Has His steadfast love forever ceased? Are His promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His compassion?” And I say, “It is my grief that the right hand of the Most High has changed.” I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; yea, I will remember Thy wonders of old. I will meditate on all Thy work, and muse on Thy mighty deeds. Thy way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? Thou art the God Who workest wonders, Who hast manifested Thy might among the peoples. Thou didst with Thy arm redeem Thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. When the waters saw Thee, O God, when the waters saw Thee, they were afraid, yea, the deep trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; Thy arrows flashed on every side. The crash of Thy thunder was in the whirlwind; Thy lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Thy way was through the sea, Thy path through the great waters; yet Thy footprints were unseen. Thou didst lead Thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

PSALM 91 (90) Reader: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in Whom I trust.” For He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your habitation, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For He will give His angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. Because he cleaves to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation. Choir: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Glory to Thee, O God. (THRICE) Lord, have mercy.

THEOTOKION FOR THE SIXTH HOUR IN TONE FOUR Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. For verily, we have no favor for the multitude of our sins. Therefore, O virgin Theotokos, plead with Him that was born of thee; for the pleadings of the Mother are very effective in seeking the favor of the Master.Turn thou not away, therefore, from the pleadings of sinners, O most venerable one; for He Who was willing to suffer for our sins is merciful and able to save us.

THE IDIOMELA FOR THE SIXTH HOUR In Tone Eight

Thus sayeth the Lord to John, Come, O Prophet, and baptize me, Who have created Thee, the Illuminator and Purifier of all by grace. Touch my divine head and falter not, O Prophet. Let be now; for I have come to fulfill all justice. Be not doubtful, therefore, at all; for verily, I have come to destroy Archon of darkness, the Contender, who hideth in the waters, now rescuing the world from his traps, and granting eternal life, since I am the Lover of mankind.

In Tone Six Verse: Therefore will I remember Thee from the land of the Jordan. Today it is the time for the prophecy of the Psalms to take effect; for it sayeth that the sea beheld and ran away; and Jordan turned back from the face of the Lord, from the face of the God of Jacob, Who cometh to accept baptism from a servant, so that having been washed from abominable idolatry, our souls may be illuminated by Him.

In Tone Five Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Why are thy waters troubled, O Jordan, and why turnest thou backward, not proceeding forward according to thy natural flow? It shall answer, saying, I cannot bear a consuming fire. Therefore, do I marvel and tremble at Thy exceeding condescension; for I am not accustomed to wash the Pure; I have not learned to purify the sinless One, but to purify impure vessels. Christ, who baptized in me, doth teach me to burn the thorns of sins. And John, the voice of the Word, doth testify with me, crying, Behold the Lamb of God Who heareth the sin of the world. Let us believers therefore cry unto Him, saying, O God that hath appeared for our salvation, glory to Thee.

THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: The voice of the Lord is upon the waters. Ascribe to the Lord, O ye children of God.

Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the prophecy of Isaiah. (12:3-6)

Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: These things the Lord doth say: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His Name; make known His deeds among the nations, proclaim that His Name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for He has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

THE EPISTLE Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. (6:3-11)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: Brethren, do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For He Who has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him. For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; Death no longer has dominion over him. In the death he died, he died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives, He lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Priest: Peace be to thee that readest.

Mark. (1:9-11)

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Priest: Let us attend! It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when He came up out of the water, immediately He saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “Thou art my beloved Son; with Thee I am well pleased.” Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Reader: Swiftly let Thy compassion apprehend us, O Lord; for we are greatly impoverished. Help us, O God our Savior, for Thy Name’s glory. Lord, deliver us and forgive us our sins for Thy Name’s sake. People: Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. Nail the fear of Thee in our bodies, and turn not our hearts to evil speech or thoughts. Nay, by Thy longing, wound our souls that, beholding Thee always, and being guided by the light coming from Thee, and observing Thee, O unapproachable eternal Light, we may address to Thee ceaselessly our thanksgiving and confession; O Father without beginning, with Thine only Son, and Thy most Holy Spirit, the Giver of life, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. THE NINTH HOUR OF THE THEOPHANY Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

PSALM 93 (92) Reader: The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, He is girded with strength. Yea, the world is established; it shall never be moved; Thy throne is established from of old; Thou art from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice, and the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty! Thy decrees are very sure; holiness befits Thy house, O Lord, for evermore.

PSALM 114-115 (113) Reader: When Israel went forth from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion. The sea looked and fled, Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, Who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water. Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Thy Name give glory, for the sake of Thy steadfast love and Thy faithfulness! Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them. O Israel, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, put your trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield. You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield. The Lord has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron; He will bless those who fear the Lord, both small and great. May the Lord give you increase, you and your children! May you be blessed by the Lord, Who made heaven and earth! The heavens are the Lord’s heavens, but the earth he has given to the sons of men. The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any that go down into silence. But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and for evermore.

PSALM 86 (85) Reader: Incline thy ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am godly; save Thy servant who trusts in Thee. Thou art my God; be gracious to me, O Lord, for to Thee do I cry all the day. Gladden the soul of Thy servant, for to Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, O Lord, art good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on Thee. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; hearken to my cry of supplication. In the day of my trouble I call on Thee, for Thou dost answer me. There is none like Thee among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like Thine. All the nations Thou hast made shall come and bow down before Thee, O Lord, and shall glorify Thy name. For Thou art great and doest wondrous things, Thou alone art God. Teach me thy way, O Lord, that I may walk in Thy truth; unite my heart to fear Thy name. I give thanks to Thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify Thy Name for ever. For great is Thy steadfast love toward me; Thou hast delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. O God, insolent men have risen up against me; a band of ruthless men seek my life, and they do not set Thee before them. But Thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Turn to me and take pity on me; give Thy strength to Thy servant, and save the son of Thy handmaid. Show me a sign of Thy favor that those who hate me may see and be put to shame because Thou, Lord, hast helped me and comforted me. Choir: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

THEOTOKION FOR THE RESURRECTION IN TONE EIGHT Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. accept the intercession of Thy Mother, the Theotokos, for us; and save Thy despairing people, O our Savior.

THE IDIOMELA FOR THE NINTH HOUR In Tone Seven

It is an astonishing thing how the Maker of heaven and earth is seen naked in the river, accepting like a servant baptism from a servant for our salvation. Therefore, the ranks of the angels were astonished in fear and rejoicing. With them therefore, we worship Thee. Save us, O Lord.

In Tone Two Verse: Therefore will I remember Thee from the land of the Jordan. Verily, the Forerunner, seeing the Lord of glory coming towards him, cried, saying, Behold the Redeemer of the world cometh from corruption. Behold, He rescueth us from sorrow. Behold, He Who granteth forgiveness of sins hath come to the earth from a pure Virgin, of His own mercy. Wherefore, He maketh us sons of God instead of servants; and instead of darkness He illuminateth mankind with the water of His divine baptism. Let us, therefore, glorify Him in unison with the Father and the Holy Spirit. NOTE: The following is done slowly from the center of the church.

In Tone Five Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. + Thy hand which touched the head of the Master, free of corruption… (THRICE) the same with which thou didst point Him to us by the pointing of the finger, raise thou it to Him for our sakes, O Forerunner. Thou hast attained great favor, since it was testified of thee by Him that thou art the greatest of all the Prophets. And thine eyes also, which did behold the All-holy Spirit descending in the likeness of a dove, raise to Him, O Baptizer, granting mercy for us. + Come, thou, and stand with us… (THRICE) concluding our praise and beginning the celebration of the Feast.

THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY Deacon: Let us attend!

Reader: And of the mother Zion, it shall be said, this and that man is born in her and the Highest Himself hath founded her.

Deacon: Wisdom.

Reader: The reading is from the prophecy of Isaiah. (49:8-15)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: Thus says the Lord: “In a time of favor I have answered you, in a day of salvation I have helped you; I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages; saying to the prisoners, ‘Come forth,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’ They shall feed along the ways, on all bare heights shall be their pasture;

they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall smite them, for He who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be raised up. Lo, these shall come from afar, and lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Syene.” Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted His people, and will have compassion on His afflicted. But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me.” Saith the Lord: “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.”

THE EPISTLE Deacon: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to Titus. (2:11-15; 3:4-7)

Deacon: Let us attend! Reader: My son Titus, the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world; awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for Himself a people of His own who are zealous for good deeds. Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by His grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. Priest: Peace be to thee that readest.

Luke. (3:1-18)

Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Priest: Let us attend! In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiber’i-us Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturae’a and Trachoni’tis, and Lysa’ni-as tetrarch of Abile’ne, in the high-priesthood of Annas and Ca’iaphas, the Word of God came to John the son of Zechari’ah in the wilderness; and He went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “You

Page 22: Theophany Royal Hoursww1.antiochian.org/sites/default/files/assets/asset...Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is

brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” And the multitudes asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Collect no more than is appointed you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.” As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but He Who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, to clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.” So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people. Choir: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee. Reader: Forsake us not utterly, for Thy holy Name’s sake, and destroy not Thy covenant. Take not Thy mercies from us, for the sake of Abraham beloved of Thee, and for the sake of Isaac Thy servant, and of Israel Thy holy one.

(40 times) Priest: O Christ our God, Who art worshipped and glorified at all times at every hour both in heaven and on earth; Who art long-suffering and plenteous in mercy and compassion; Who lovest the just man and showest mercy upon the sinner; and Who callest all men to repentance

through the promise of blessings to come; receive, O Lord, at this very hour our supplications, and direct our lives in the way of Thy commandments: sanctify our souls, purify our bodies, set our minds aright, cleanse our thoughts; deliver us from all affliction, trouble, and distress; compass us about with Thy holy angels, that, guided and guarded by them, we may attain unto the unity of the Faith, and to the knowledge of Thine unapproachable glory; for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages.

Priest: God be merciful unto us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, and be

merciful unto us.

Choir: Amen. Priest: O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, Who art patient with our sins, and Who hast brought us even to the present hour, in which, as Thou didst hang upon the life-giving Tree Thou didst make a way into paradise for the penitent thief, and by Death didst destroy death, cleanse us sinners, Thine unworthy servants; for we have sinned and have dealt iniquitously, and we are not worthy to lift up our eyes and look upon the heights of heaven, inasmuch as we have departed from the path of Thy righteousness, and have walked after the desires of our own hearts. But we implore Thy boundless goodness. Spare us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Thy mercies, and save us, for Thy holy Name’s sake; for our days have passed away in vanity. Wrest us from the hand of the adversary, and forgive us our sins, and mortify in us carnal imagination; that, putting off the old man, we may be clothed upon the new man, and may live unto Thee, our Master and Benefactor; that, following after Thy commandments, we may attain unto rest eternal, where is the abode of all those who rejoice; for Thou art in verity the true Joy and Exultation of those who love Thee, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with the Father, Who is without beginning, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen.

THE TYPICA OF THE THEOPHANY PSALM 103 (102)

Reader: Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that Thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. He made known His ways unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide:

Page 24: Theophany Royal Hoursww1.antiochian.org/sites/default/files/assets/asset...Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness because of my enemies; make Thy way straight before me. For there is

neither will He keep His anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us. Like a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children’s children; to such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all. Bless the Lord, ye His angels that excel in strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His word. Bless ye the Lord, all ye His hosts; ye ministers of His, that do His pleasure. Bless the Lord, all His works in all places of His dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul.

PSALM 146 (145) Reader: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have being. Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help. When his breath departs he returns to his earth; on that very day his plans perish. Happy is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith for ever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the sojourners, He upholds the widow and the fatherless; but the way of the wicked He brings to ruin. The Lord will reign for ever, thy God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord! Reader: Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. O Only-begotten Son and Word of God, Who art immortal and Who didst deign for our salvation to be incarnate of the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, and without change wast made man, and was crucified, O Christ our God, and didst trample death by Death, being yet one of the holy Trinity, glorified together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us.

Choir: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Remember us, O Lord, when thou comest into Thy kingdom (THRICE). The heavenly rank praiseth Thee and saith, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Verse: Come ye before Him and be lighted, and let not your faces be ashamed. The heavenly rank praiseth Thee and saith, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. The heavenly rank praiseth Thee and saith, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

THE NICENE CREED People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten before all worlds: Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, of one essence with the Father by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And on the third day rose again according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead, Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, Who procedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Priest: Pardon, remit and forgive, O God, our intentional and unintentional falls, by word or deed, wittingly or unwittingly, those by night and those by day, those of the mind or those of the senses, and forgive us all; for Thou art good and the Lover or mankind.

THE LORD’S PRAYER People: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen.
