Theophany (Theophania - "Appearance of God") is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church and is joyfully celebrated on 6 January.

It is the Great Feast that reveals the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the Baptism

of our Lord Jesus Christ. (MATTHEW 3 : 13 - 17; MARK 1 : 9 - 11; LUKE 3 : 21 - 22) We hereby commemorate Christ's Baptism by St John the Baptist & Forerunner in the

Jordan River, and the beginning of our Saviour’s earthly Ministry. Theophany is the culmination of the Nativity Season, which begins with Christ’s Nativity

on 25 December and ends with His Baptism on 6 January. The Holy Service of the Great Blessing of Water is performed on Theophany and the

Sanctified Water is used by the Parish Priests to Bless the homes of the Faithful,

who also receive small bottles of Blessed Water for their personal use. At Theophany the Holy Trinity appeared clearly to mankind for the first time when God

the Father's Voice was heard from Heaven, the Son of God Incarnate (in His human Nature) stood in the Jordan River, and God the Holy Spirit hovered above Him “like

a dove.” “Epiphany” is a reference to the Western Christian Feast that occurs the same day,

which commemorates the Adoration of the Magi of the New Born King – their worship of the Child Jesus, at the Holy Family’s new home in Bethlehem, some

time after the Nativity of Christ, although the term "Epiphany" does appear in the Services for this Feast. (THEIR VALUABLE GIFTS WERE USED AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF CHRIST’S LIFE)

Originally, there was just one Christian Feast of “The Shining Forth of God” to the world in the human Nature of God Incarnate – our Lord Jesus of Nazareth. It included the

celebration of Christ’s Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi and all the early childhood Events of the Infant Christ - such as His Circumcision and Presentation at the

Temple - as well as His Baptism thirty years later by St John the Baptist and Forerunner in the Jordan River – the beginning of His Public Ministry.

This Great Feast, like that of Holy Pascha and Pentecost, was the fulfillment of a

previous Jewish Festival, in this case - the Feast of Lights. The Holy Services of Theophany are set up exactly like those of the Feast of the

Nativity, which, historically were established only later. The Royal Hours are read and the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great is served with

Vespers on the Eve of the Feast. The All Night Vigil consists of the Holy Services of Great Compline and Matins.

The Divine Liturgy of the Theophany begins with Psalms of Glorification and Praise instead of the usual three Antiphons. The Baptismal Verse mentioned in St Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians 3:27 once again replaces the Thrice-Holy “ For as many as

have been Baptised into Christ, have put on Christ! Alleluia!”

The Holy Gospel Lessons of all the Services describe our Lord's Baptism by St John the Baptist in the Jordan River and the Epistles explain the consequences of the Divine Epiphany, which is the Incarnation of Christ – the coming to earth of the Word and

Son of God. Since the main Feature of the Feast is the Blessing of Water, it is prescribed to follow

both the Divine Liturgy of the Forefeast or Eve of Theophany and the Divine Liturgy the following day.

All Faithful Christians should attend these significant Holy Services because the Blessing of the Waters verifies that all mankind, and all Creation, were created to

be filled with the Sanctifying Presence of Almighty God.

O Thou Who accepts as a Sacrifice of

Praise and Worship pleasing to Thee, this reasonable and bloodless Sacrifice, from those who call upon Thee with their whole heart, O Christ our God, O Lamb and Son of God, Who takes away the sin of the world: the Blameless Calf, not bearing the yoke of sin, and yet of Thine own Will was Sacrificed for us; Who, being Broken, yet is not divided; Who is eaten but never consumed, but Sanctifies those who eat thereof.

Who, in Remembrance of Thy

Voluntary Passion and Thy Life-giving Resurrection on the Third Day hast rendered us to be Partakers of Thine Ineffable and Heavenly and Dread Mysteries - Thy Holy Body and Thy Precious Blood.

Preserve us, Thy servants - the

Diaconate, those in authority over us, Faithful Armed Forces, and all the people here present - in Thy Holiness.

And grant us at all times and at every

moment to meditate on Thy Righteousness, that being guided towards Thy Will and having done that which is well pleasing to Thee, we may be accounted worthy to stand at Thy right Hand when Thou comes to Judge both the living and the dead.

Deliver our Brethren in captivity, Visit

the sick, Direct from all danger those at sea, and grant Rest to the souls of those who have departed before us in the Hope of Life Everlasting, where the Light of Thy Countenance watches over them, and hears all those who pray for Thy Help.

THE PRIEST PARTAKES OF THE HOLY COMMUNION: BEFORE EATING A PIECE OF THE BODY OF CHRIST – THE SECOND

QUARTER WITH THE LETTER XC [CHRIST] HE PRAYS:

To me ... [name]... the unworthy Priest, is given the Most Holy and Precious Body of our Lord

and God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the remission of my sins, and for Eternal Life.

AND BEFORE HE DRINKS FROM THE HOLY CHALIC…

The Most Holy and Precious Blood of our Lord, and God and Saviour, Jesus Christ is granted

to me ...[name], the unworthy Priest : for the Remission of my sins, and for Eternal Life.

... AFTER WHICH HE KISSES THE CHALICE AND WIPING THE LIP OF THE CHALICE HE REPEATS THE WORDS OF ST ISAIAH

WHO HEARD THEM FROM THE SERAPHIM :

This has touched my lips, and shall take away mine iniquities, and purge away my sins.

THE PRIEST PLACES THE REMAINING PORTIONS OF THE LAMB INTO THE CHALICE:

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus - the only Sinless

One. We venerate Thy Cross, O Christ, and we praise and Glorify Thy Holy Resurrection.

Thou art our God. We know no other than Thee, and we call upon Thy Name. Come, all

ye Faithful: let us venerate the Holy Resurrection of Christ. For behold: through the Cross

Joy has come to all the world. Blessing the Lord always, let us praise His Resurrection.

For enduring the Cross for us, He destroyed Death by Death.

Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem, for the Glory of the Lord has Risen upon Thee, celebrate now

and be glad, O Zion. And do Thou, O Pure Mother of God, rejoice in the rising of Thy

Child.

O Divine! O Beloved! O Sweetness of Thy Voice! For Thou, O Christ, hast truly proised to be

with us until the end of time. Wherefore, we, the Faithful rejoice,

holding these Thy Wrds as an Anchor of Hope.

O Christ, O Great and Most Sacred Passover! O Wisdom, and Word of

God, and Power! Grant that we may more truly have

Communion with Thee in the Day of Thy Kingdom, which knows

Wash away, O Lord, the sins of those who have been remembered

READER In the beginning God created Heaven and earth.

And the earth was invisible and

unfinished - and darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the water.

And God said: “Let there be light!” and

there was light.

And God saw the light, for it was good.

And God divided the light from the

darkness.

And God called the light ‘Day’ and the

darkness He called ‘Night.’

And there was evening and morning –

one day.

And God said: “Let there be a

firmament in the midst of the water, and let it divide the water from the water.”

And it was so.

And God made the firmament.

And God divided the water under the

firmament from the water above the firmament.

And the water under the firmament

was separated from the water above the firmament.

And God called the firmament ‘Heaven’

and God saw that it was Good.

And there was evening and morning –

the second day.

READER Moses led Israel from the Red

Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur.

They went three days in the wilderness

and found no water to drink.

When they arrived at Marah, they could

not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore he named that place “Bitterness.”

And the people murmured against

Moses, saying: “What shall we drink?”

Moses cried to the Lord; and the Lord

showed him a Tree1, and he threw it into the water, and it became sweet.

1 “A TREE” REFERS TO THE HOLY CROSS OF CHRIST AND HOLY BAPTISM. - FOR THE CROSS IS HOLY BAPTISM AND VICE VERSA. THE CROSS IS IN

THE BAPTISMAL WATER AND THE BAPTISMAL WATER IS IN THE CROSS. FOR THAT EXACT REASON, WE ARE SAVED BY HOLY BAPTISM –

THE BEGINNING - AND THE HOLY CROSS OF CHRIST – OUR LIFELONG STRIVING TO LIVE IN CHRIST AND THUS ATTAIN ETERNAL LIFE..

READER The Lord said to Joshua the Son of Nun: “Today I shall begin to exalt you in the sight of all the Sons of Israel, for they will know that I shall be with you as I was with Moses.

“And you shall command the Priests who carry the Ark of the Covenant, saying: ‘As soon as you enter a part of the water of the Jordan River, you shall stand in the Jordan.’

When the Priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord arrived at the River Jordan, and the feet of the Priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant dipped in part of the waters of the Jordan (which had overflowed all its banks about the time of wheat harvest,) the upstream waters stopped flowing downstream.

A solid wall of water formed over a very great distance, as far are the region of Adam.

The lower part went down to the Sea of Arab, the Salt Sea, until it came to a complete stop.

And the people stood opposite Jericho.

And the Priests who bore the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan River; and all the Sons of Israel crossed on dry ground until all the people had crossed the Jordan.

READER Elijah said to Elisha: “Tarry here, I beseech Thee for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan.”

And Elisha said: “As the Lord lives, and

as Thy soul lives, I will not leave Thee!”

And they went on.

And Fifty men - the sons of the

Prophets – went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Joran.

And Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up,

and struck the water, and the water divided this way and that, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

And it was during the time as they

crossed over that Elijah said to Elisha: “Ask what I may do for Thee, before I am taken away from Thee.”

And Elisha said: “Let a double portion

of Thy Spirit be upon me.”

And Elijah said: “Thou has asked for

something difficult. If Thou sees me when I am taken up from Thee, it shall be so for Thee; and if not, it shall not be so.”

And it came to be: as they walked and

continued to talk, behold! A Chariot of Fire appeared with Horses of Fire, and the Fire separated them one from the other; and Elijah was taken up into Heaven by a whirlwind!

And Elisha beheld it and cried aloud:

“Father! Father! The Chariot of Israel and its Horsemen!”

And he saw Elijah no more, and he took

hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

And he raised Elijah’s mantle, which

had fallen from Elijah and upon Elisha, and he returned and stood on the bank of the River Jordan.

And he took Elijah’s mantle, which had

fallen upon him, and struck the water, but it did not divide.

PEOPLE > Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Hosts,

Heaven and Earth art full of Thy Glory.

of the Lord.

Hosanna in the Highest!

WHILE THE HYMNS ARE BEING CHANTED , THE PRIEST QUIETLY PRAYS:

And with these Blessed Powers, O Master and Lover of mankind, we also cry aloud and say:

Holy indeed and Most Holy art Thou, and no bounds are there to the Majesty of Thy

Holiness; and Just art Thou in all Thy Works, for in Righteousness and True Judgement

hast Thou ordered all things for us. For after Thou had formed man of the clay of the

earth, and honoured him, O God, with Thine own Image, Thou set him in the Paradise of

Delight, and promised him Immortal Life and the enjoyment of Eternal Good Things in the

keeping of Thy Commandments. And when he disobeyed Thee, His True God, Who had

created him, and was allured by the deceit of the serpent, and slain by his own trespasses,

Thou, O Lord, in Righteous Judgement casted him out of Paradise into this world, and

returned him to the earth from whence he was taken: dispensing for him Salvation by

Regeneration, which is in Thy Christ Himself.

For Thou, O Good One, did not wholly forsake Thy creature, which Thou had made, neither

did Thou forget the Works of Thy Hands, but because of Thy Tender Mercy in diverse

manners, visited him.

Prophets Thou sent, Mighty Works Thou hast performed through Thy Saints, Who have been

well-pleasing to Thee in every generation: Thou hast spoken to us by the mouth of Thy

servants, the Prophets, foretelling us of the Salvation to come.

The Law Thou granted to help us, Angels Thou appointed to Guard us. And when the Fullness

of the time came, Thou spoke to us dy Thy Son Himself, by Whom also Thou created the

worlds – Who, being the Brightness of Thy Glory, and the express Image of Thy Person,

and upholding all things by the Word of His Power, thought it not robbery to be Eqyal with

Thee, God and Father. And being God Pre-Eternal, He showed Himself upon earth, and

conversed with mankind: and being Incarnate of the Holy Virgin, He emptied Himself and

took upon Himself the form of a servant, becoming the likeness of the body of our

humility that He might fashion us like the Image of His Glory.

For inasmuch as by one man sin entered our world, and Death by sin, so it seemed good to

Thine Only Begotten Son, Who is in the Bosom of Thee, O God and Father, made of a

Woman, the Holy Mother of God and Ever Virgin Mary, made under the Law, to condemn

sin in His Flesh, that they who die in Adam may be quickened in Thy Christ Himself, Who,

dwelling in this world granted Saving Commandments and having turned us from the

deceits of idols, brought us to the Knowledge of Thee, the True God and Father, having

possessed us to Himself for a Chosen People, a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation; Who has

Cleansed us with Water and Sanctified us by the Holy Spirit, giving Himself as a Ransom to

Death, wherein we were held – sold under sin. And by the Cross having descended into

Hades that He might fill all things with Himself, He loosened the the pains of Death; and

being Resurrected the Third Day, He made way for all flesh unto the Resurrection of the

dead, for since it was not possible that the Author of Life should be held by corruption, He

beame the First-fruit of those who had fallen asleep - the Firstborn from the dead – that in

all things He might have pre-eminence.

READER Thus says the Lord: “In an

acceptable time, I heard Thee, and in the Day of Salvation I helped Thee.

“And I give Thee as a Covenant to the

Gentiles, to establish the earth, and to inherit the Inheritance of the desert, saying to those in bonds: ‘Go forth!’ - and to those in Darkness: ‘Reveal yourselves!’

“Along all their roads they shall feed,

and their Pasture shall be along all the Paths.

“They shall not hunger, neither shall

they thirst, nor shall the burning heat of of the sun strike them – for He Who has Mercy on them, will Comfort them.

“And He shall lead them by the

Fountains of Waters.

“And He will make every mountain

like a road, and every path, as a pasture for them.

“Behold! These come from afar – these

from the North and these from the sea, and the others from the land of the Persians!”

Be glad, O Heavens, and rejoice

exceedingly, O Earth!

Let the mountains break out in

Gladness, and the hills in Righteousness!

For the Lord has Mercy on His People, and Comforts the humble of His People.

Zion said: “The Lord forsook me, and

the Lord forgot me!”

“Will a woman forget her child, so as

not to have mercy on the offspring of her womb?

“Yet even if a woman should forget these things, I shall not forget you!” says the Lord Almighty.

O Holy God, Who rests among Thy Saints, Who art glorified by the Cherubim, and praised by

the Seraphim with a Thrice-Holy Voice, and worshipped by all the Hosts of Heaven; Thou

Who has brought all things out of nothingness into being; Thou Who has created man in

Thine Own Image and Likeness, and has adorned him with all Thy Favours; Thou Who

grant to the suppliant Wisdom and Prudence, and does not neglect the sinner, but has set

forth the Way of Repentance unto Salvation; Thou Who has accounted us, Thy humble and

unworthy servants, worthy to stand at this time before the Glory of Thy Holy Altar, and to

bring to Thee due adoration and praise; do Thou, O Master, accept even from the mouth

of us sinners, the Thrice-Holy Hymn and visit us in Thy Righteousness; forgive us all our

transgressions, voluntary and involuntary; Sanctify our souls and bodies; and grant, that

we may worship Thee in Holiness all the days of our life, through the Intercessions of the

Holy Theotokos and all the Saints, who from the beginning of time have pleased Thee; for

Thou, our God, art Holy, and to Thee we ascribe Glory, > to the Father, and to the Son, and

PRIESTLet us attend

READER: Brethren, although I am free from

all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more.

And to the Jews I was Jewish, that I

might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as being under the Law, that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without Law, as though without Law (not being without Law towards God, but under the Law towards Christ), that I might win those who are without Law.

To the weak, I became weak, that I

might win the weak.

I have become all things to all men, that

I might - by all means - Save some.

This I do for the Gospel’s sake – that I

may be partaker of It with you.

Do you not know that those who

compete in a stadium, all run, but one receives the Prize?

Run in such a manner that you may

obtain it!

Everyone who competes for the Prize is

temperate in all things.

They do it to obtain a perishable crown,

but we do it for an Imperishable Crown.

And he went into all the region around

the Jordan River, preaching a Baptism of Repentance for the Remission of sins, as it is written in the Book of the words of Isaiah, the Prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the Way of the Lord! Make His Paths straight!

‘Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill brought low, and the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the Salvation of God.’”

He said to the multitudes who went out

to be Baptised by him: “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the Wrath to come?

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of

Repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves: ‘We have Abraham as our Father.’ For I say to you: God is able to raise up from these stones children for Abraham!

“Behold! Even now, the axe is laid at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

And the people asked him, saying:

“What shall we do then?”

He answered and said to them: “He who

has two tunics – let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”

Tax Collectors also went to be Baptised

and said to him: “Teacher, what shall we do?”

He said to them: “Collect no more than

what is appointed for you.”

Likewise, the soldiers asked him,

saying: “And what shall we do?”

And he said to them: “Do not intimidate

anyone nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

As the people were in expectation, and

all reasoned in their hearts about John – whether he was the Christ or not – John answered, saying to all: “I

indeed Baptise you with water; but One Mightier than me is coming -Whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loosen.

“He will Baptise you with the Holy Spirit

and Fire.

“His winnowing fan is in His Hand, and

He will thoroughly clean out His Threshing Floor, and gather the Wheat into His Barn - but the chaff He will burn with Unquenchable Fire.”

With many other exhortations he

preached to the people.

PRIESTPRIESTPRIESTPRIEST For being always guarded by Thy Power, to Thee we ascribe Glory: > to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the Ages of Ages.

P r a y e r o f t h e C h e r u b i c H y m n WHILE THE CHERUBIC HYMN IS CHANTED , THE PRIEST BOWS HIS HEAD AND RECITES THE FOLLOWING PRAYER ON BEHALF

OF HIMSELF .

THIS PRAYER SHOULD ALSO BE READ BY THE CONGREGATION FOR THEIR ENLIGHTENMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE

GREAT SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST THAT FOLLOWS SHORTLY.

None is worthy among those who are held fast in fleshly desires and pleasures to approach,

to to draw nigh, or to minister to Thee, O King of Glory, for to minister to Thee is a great

and fearful thing, even for the Heavenly Powers themselves. Notwithstanding, through

Thine Ineffable and Immeasurable Love for mankind, Thou became Man, suffering no

change nor altering, and art our High Priest and has Thyself bestowed upon us the

Ministry of this Divine Office and Bloodless Sacrifice as Master of all. For Thou only, O

Lord our God, hast Dominion over all things in Heaven and on earth, Who art borne upon

a Throne of Cherubim, Who art Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel; Who alone art

Holy and rest in the Holies. Therefore, I beseech Thee, Who alone art Good and ready to

hear: look down upon me, Thy sinful and unprofitable servants, and Cleanse my soul and

my heart from an evil conscience. And by the Power of the Holy Spirit, enable me, who

am invested with the Grace of Priesthood, to stand before this Thy Holy Table, and to

administer Thy Most Pure and Sacred Body and Thy Precious Blood. For unto Thee I

come, to Thee I bow my head, and I beseech Thee: turn not Thy Sight from me, neither

reject me from among Thy servants, but account it fitting for these Gifts to be offered to

Thee by me, Thy sinful and unworthy servant. For Thou art He Who Offers and He Who is

Offered, and He Who receives and Who is given, O Christ our God, > and to Thee we

ascribe Glory, together with Thine Eternal Father, and Thine All Holy, Good and Life-giving

Spirit, now and forever, and to the Ages of Ages. Amen.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to

Thy Great Mercy. And according to the abundance of Thy Compassion blot

out my transgression.

Wash me thoroughly from my

lawlessness, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and

my sin is always before me.

Against Thee only have I sinned, and done evil in Thy Sight: that Thou may

be Justified in Thy Words, and may overcome when Thou art judged.

For behold I was conceived in

transgressions; and in sins my mother bore me.

Behold: Thou Love Truth. Thou showed

me the unknown and secret things of

Thy Wisdom.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with Hyssop, and

I will be cleansed - Thou shalt wash me, and I will be made whiter than

snow.

Thou shalt make me hear Joy and

Gladness – my bones that were

humbled shalt greatly Rejoice.

Turn Thy Sight away from my sins, and

blot out all my transgressions.

A clean heart create in me, O God, and

Do not cast me away from Thy Presence,

and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the Joy of Thy Salvation,

and Uphold me with Thy Guiding Spirit.
