Multi BAFTA-award winning entertainment show The X Factor returns for a seventh series, exploding onto screens on Saturday 21 August at 7:30pm, now in high definition on ITV1 HD.

This year, a series of guest judges will join Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole as they audition thousands of hopefuls at arenas across the country in front of a live audience. Dannii Minogue will return to her judging duties at the Judges’ Houses stage of the competition.

Joining Simon, Louis and Cheryl at the auditions will be Geri Halliwell (Glasgow), Natalie Imbruglia (Birmingham), Pixie Lott (Cardiff), Katy Perry (Dublin) and Nicole Scherzinger (Manchester and Bootcamp).

Dermot O’Leary returns as host and will be on hand to celebrate with the successful acts and commiserate with those who don’t get through the various stages. Konnie Huq joins as the new host of The Xtra Factor on ITV2.

Once again, the contestants audition in four categories: Boys (16 - 24 years), Girls (16 - 24 years), Overs and the Groups. Each judge will ultimately mentor one of the categories.

With Cheryl triumphant for the last two series with Alexandra Burke and last year Joe McElderry, the pressure is on the other three to pick the act they hope will go on to win the series for them.

Elaine Bedell, ITV’s Director of Entertainment and Comedy says: “The X Factor returns to our screens and this time round viewers will be able to see all the glitz, glamour, tears and tantrums in high definition on ITV1 HD”.

Richard Holloway, Head of Entertainment at talkbackTHAMES and Executive Producer of The X Factor commented: “It’s incredible to think that there’s still so much new and untapped talent out there. Our guest judges have added a new dimension to auditions, and we’re delighted that such amazing acts continue to audition for their chance in the spotlight”.

The Xtra Factor returns to ITV2 for a seventh series with a brand new host, Konnie Huq, at the helm.

Konnie takes up her new role to bring viewers the inside scoop on everything X Factor related, chatting to the contestants, judges and ITV1 presenter, Dermot O’Leary. She is your very own eyes and ears behind the scenes of The X Factor.

With so many new girls on the judging panel this year, Konnie will be making sure she catches up with guest judges Geri, Natalie, Pixie, Katy and Nicole to see how they have found their X Factor experience and what they really think of Simon, Louis and Cheryl.

And after getting the girls’ own views of the auditions, judge veteran, Louis Walsh, will be playing ‘Come Judge With Me’ and giving each guest judge a mark out of ten…who will be his favourite?

During some bonding time with her fellow presenter, Konnie will be ‘Delving into Dermot’ and asking him burning questions posed by the singing hopefuls, such as ‘Who was your favourite winner?’

Moving onto the bootcamp stage, Konnie will be challenging the acts to a competition within the The X Factor competition with a prize for ‘most amazing amazingness at bootcamp’ up for grabs… as well as rummaging through the contestants suitcases as they arrive to really get to know the contenders battling it out for this year’s prize.

And as the show moves into the live finals, Konnie will be getting all the exclusive reactions from both the contestants and the judges. So tune into ITV2 for all the latest action from the juggernaut that is The X Factor!

sIMon CoWeLL Q&a

How have the guest judges worked out this year? Have they added a new dynamic to the show? They have been great - each of them have been different in their own way and bought different perspectives to the auditions.

We’ve been back to Dublin for the first time in a few years – what did you make of the talent there?I think Louis particularly enjoyed being there – given the chance he’d have put most of the auditionees straight through – probably even before they’d sung. I had no idea what to expect – Louis has told us for years there is more talent in Dublin than anywhere else in the world ….. so we went there because of him.

Have you had many memorable auditions this year and if so, can you tell us about them? There have been a lot of memorable ones this year for different reasons – you will know them when you see them. I don’t want to give away too much.

What are you looking for on this year’s show?Someone who stands out from the crowd. Someone who knows who they are and what they want to be - not people copying an artist who is already out there. I want them to be telling me what music we should be making for people their age – especially the younger ones. They have to be relevant.

Are there any things that auditionees do/say/sing which really annoy you?!There are certain songs we hear over and over again at auditions and it really puts you off. Jason Mraz, Paulo Nutini, Kings of Leon and a few others….. They can be great songs but when you have heard them 20 times already that day, its off putting. And also I like it when people are totally honest about why they have entered – if you’ve entered because you want to get rich and famous then that’s great.

The audition days are long. How do you maintain your energy throughout the day? Some days feel longer than others! Honestly though? - occasionally I’ll sleep for ten minutes! I do a lot of my work around 2am so sometimes work till 5am talking to America – or the UK if I’m over there.

Do you think sometimes there is a risk of the judges overshadowing contestants? That’s a really good point, sometimes we have gotten into the habit, and obviously I’m partly responsible for this, of the judges’ personalities being talked about more than the contestants. The judges are there for their opinions, so for me the most important criteria for sitting on a judging panel is, do you actually know what you are talking about?

Which category would you like to mentor this year and why? They each have their appeal - the winning one basically! Cheryl would be absolutely unbearable if she won again.

How do you know when you’ve found someone with that rare star quality - X Factor.Tastes change all the time and I think it can actually change over time. If you look at the pop music world today, it’s completely influenced by Lady Gaga, Glee, Katy Perry. Two years ago it was a very different landscape. And the reason we call the show The X Factor is it’s more than just a singing voice, because if it were only a singing voice we could just as easily make a show where contestants send in tapes and we listen to the voices. All great artists are relevant. They have that steel in their eyes - it’s charisma, personality, being unique, entertaining, all those things rolled into one.

How would you sum up this year’s show?I’m excited about it. It’s different in a lot of ways. Things have moved on and the show will reflect that.

Are you pleased with Joe McElderry’s progress for his new album?Really pleased, yes. He’s grown in confidence. Some of the music is quite different to what you heard from him last year on the show and I’m really happy for him.

Do we have more surprises to come with the live shows?Of course, there are new things happening all the time and we change things on a weekly, no, actually, daily basis.

How are you feeling to be embarking on the seventh series of The X Factor?I am really excited because this show just gets bigger and better every year. It is so unpredictable and you never know what is going to happen, unlike on some other shows! The X Factor is definitely one of the best shows on TV.

How have you found working with the guest judges this year?It was great, I was a bit nervous and apprehensive to start with as I didn’t know them all but, Geri was very professional and it was great to be back on a panel with her after our days on Pop Stars The Rivals. Pixie was like the new girl at school and very enthusiastic. Katy Perry was fun and Simon couldn’t control her which really made me laugh. She reminded me of Sharon Osbourne so I loved her! Natalie was great and really got it and had a great experience of music, she was a real all rounder. My favourite though was Nicole who I had never met before. This girl has the X Factor in every way. She just got it, was incredibly impressive and ticked every box.

Have you been pleased with Jedward’s progress since last year’s show ended?I’ve been delighted at the response the twins have had. They haven’t stopped working since they left the show and in less than a year they have had two sell out Irish tours a No.1 album in Ireland and top 20 in UK, they have their own reality show coming up and they have been signed up by a modelling agency. Not bad for two kids who we took a chance on and it’s worked for them. They are growing up and learning their craft in public eye and have grown a lot from it.

What do you look for in an audition? We look for that someone who walks onto the stage and makes you feel excited. Someone that makes you think ‘yes, this person could have a career in music’. And that is the best thing about the job - discovering and unearthing new talent.

Are there any things that auditionees do/say/sing which really annoy you?!Yes! There are about 10 predictable songs that I hate, anything by Alicia Keys or Mariah as no one is ever going to be able to do any of their songs justice. I hate cliché’s too “this is all I ever wanted to do” etc. Artists have to learn their craft, you have to be different and stand out from the crowd. We see people with great voices but you forget about them, so they need to be able to stand out and be memorable.

The audition days are long. How do you maintain your energy throughout the day?We are really well looked after, we have lots of breaks, and Cheryl, Simon and I would always have a good banter in between filming which makes the day go quicker, as does a supply of coffee and the odd Red Bull. But if the talent is good then you don’t need the caffeine to stay awake.

What would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?I would sing something very easy like Patsy Cline’s Crazy as it’s an easy one to sing and a great country song, one of my all time favourites.

What has been the most memorable audition for you this year and why?I don’t want to give too much away but there are two people who really stood out for me, a woman who reminds me of Sinitta – I won’t say any more but they are definitely ones to keep an eye on.

What was it like returning to Dublin for the first time in a few years? It was great that the show returned to Ireland, for a small island there is some great talent. Dublin never lets me down and there was some great characters there this year.

Which city came up with the most talented singers this year?Birmingham really surprised us this year and London, as always delivered.

Which category would you like to mentor this year and why?I’d like to get the groups or the boys, because they are always easier to work with.

In your view, what is The X Factor? The X Factor is when someone walks into a room sings and they have something unique, the attitude, personality and presentation all rolled into one and you watch them perform and think immediately you could sell records. David Bowie, Elton - people like that have the X Factor.

Do you have any pets?! No I don’t have any as I think it is cruel to keep animals inside!

Louis Walsh is the undisputed king of the Irish pop scene. He is the man behind some of the most successful bands in pop history, masterminding the careers of Boyzone, Westlife, Samantha Mumba, Girls Aloud, Shayne Ward and of course Jedward. The fact that he has achieved over a staggering 28 No.1 hits is a testament to his success and is one of the reasons why Louis Walsh is one of the most respected names in the music industry today.

Louis’ first taste of success came when he spotted an artist called Johnny Logan. Louis was convinced that Logan could be a big hit if he was given the right break and persuaded him to sing at The Eurovision Song Contest. His gamble paid off and in 1980 Johnny Logan won the 25th Eurovision Song Contest in front of 500 million viewers. Logan’s first album sold half a million copies within three days of its release, catapulting Logan to No. 1 in eleven European countries.

With a No.1 artist already under his belt, Louis was ready for his next challenge. Relying on his instincts, Louis knew that his next hit would be with a band to rival the success of Take That. A series of auditions followed and five unknown artists were plucked from obscurity. Ronan Keating, the late and great Stephen Gately, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham made up the band and Boyzone was born. They achieved 16 top three singles, six of which were No.1s and four No.1 albums, selling over 12 million copies worldwide. When Ronan Keating announced he wanted to take a break from Boyzone, Louis continued to manage his career, helping him to score a No.1 hit with ‘Life is a Rollercoaster’ in 2000. Ronan’s solo album shot to No.1 and a further two hit singles were released from the album, which went on to sell over 4.4 million copies. Just before Stephen Gately’s untimely death in 2009, Louis and Boyzone were working together on their comeback tour and album. Following Stephen’s death Boyzone released Boyzone Brother in memory of Stephen.

Louis’ next discovery, Westlife, proved a hit from the start. Record companies were falling over themselves to sign the band and in 1998 Simon Cowell, then of RCA signed them up in a multi-million pound deal. Their first single ‘Swear it Again’ reached No.1 and since 1998 they have achieved 14 No.1 hits and six No.1 albums in the UK the third highest in UK history tying with Cliff Richard and just trailing behind the Beatles and Elvis.

Louis was also the mastermind behind Lulu’s duet album featuring stars such as Paul McCartney, Sting and Elton John and the album was Lulu’s most successful release to date, reaching No. 4 in the Charts.

In 2001, Louis made his first foray into television on the Irish version of Popstars. The show made Louis a household name in both Ireland and the UK. The following year, Louis appeared as a judge on Popstars: The Rivals, along with Pete Waterman and Geri Halliwell. Louis went head to head with Pete Waterman on the show, with his all girl band Girls Aloud battling it out with Pete’s boy band, One True Voice. Girls Aloud won hands down and their debut single achieved the coveted UK Christmas No. 1.

In 2004 Louis first appeared as a judge on The X Factor, and found chart success with G4, who went on to have two chart topping platinum selling albums.

In 2005 he found success again as mentor to Shayne Ward who went on to win The X Factor that year. Shayne’s debut single That’s My Goal spent four weeks at number and his debut album has sold over 3 million copies to date.

JLS, who were mentored by Louis in 2008 have gone on to have huge UK chart success. And in 2009, Louis once again mentored one of The X Factor’s most controversial acts, John and Edward Grimes, aka Jedward. Since leaving The X Factor Louis has managed Jedward who have gone on to have a No.2 selling single with Vanilla Ice and a Top 20 album in the UK. In Ireland the twins have had two No.1 singles and their album has become the highest selling album in Ireland of 2010 to date.

How are you feeling to be embarking on the seventh series of The X Factor?I’m more excited than ever. This show is incredible and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. I’ve been sent tapes of the auditions and I have to say that every year I’ve worked on the show I’m amazed by the high standard of talent. The show gives budding performers a platform to shine and when they see others like them succeed, the new contestants fill with confidence and that is why there is never a shortage of talent. This year is no different and everyone, from judges to crew, are saying the talent is off the scale. Of course, there are some exciting characters in the mix too!

What have you missed since being on maternity leave?Top of the list has to be Simon’s bad hair! I’ve almost given up trying to freshen him up. Towards the end of last year Cheryl and I decided we would gaffa-tape Simon to his throne in his dressing room and give him a new look. We never did manage to find an appropriate moment, and as much as Louis said he was keen to help us, I don’t think he would have on the day! We would have got into so much trouble. But really, I’ve missed not being at auditions and it’s been so strange not seeing Simon, Cheryl and Louis for months, but we’ve kept in touch. I am looking forward to reclaiming my judging chair too!

Have you remained in contact with any of last year’s contestants ?I became so close with all my girls last year. I went to see The X Factor Tour at Wembley Arena in February. It’s the first year that I’ve been in the country and been able to attend. I felt so proud seeing all the final 10 acts up on stage doing their own thing and looking like true performers. Rachel and Lucie came to support me when I hosted ‘Ultimate Movie Toons’ (for ITV1) and Stacey and I have never lost touch either. She was a complete inspiration juggling motherhood and work last year – not once did she ever lose the smile on her face. I can’t wait to catch up with them all on my return.

DannII MInoGueQ&a

What are you looking for in this years contestants? Every year the competition gets tougher for the contestants as they have big shoes to fill from the previous year. There is no formula for being a pop star, you just have to have that special ingredient...the X factor… that sets you apart from everyone else. I want to see longevity potential, a sparkle in the eye, outstanding vocal ability and effortless stage presence – nothing much!

Will ‘Team Minogue’ win this year ?The X Factor is about giving someone that big chance and a rare but huge opportunity to shine in front of the nation. To be involved in this amazing process and offer as much support of encouragement to new budding superstars is just incredible. Of course, I would love ‘Team Minogue’ to win this year, but sometimes being a part of the competition is just as rewarding, look at the amazing success stories of JLS and Diana Vickers.

Are you looking forward to coming back for Judges’ Houses?I’ve been keeping up-to-date on all the audition gossip from the fans via twitter over the past couple of months. I love that 8 acts will be joining me at Judges’ Houses, although this will make it so much harder to choose the 3 acts who will make the live shows! It’s one of the hardest decisions to make as so much is determined by the final decisions made at Judges’ Houses. It’s such an exciting time as well because it’s where it all begins in a way… next it’s the live shows where everyone has to shape up or ship out!

Which category would you like to mentor this year and why?By the law of averages I should get the groups this year, I’ve never had them! However, you never know what’s going to happen. Whichever category I receive, all they need to know is that I’ll support them every step of the way. I’m really excited to arrive at Judges’ Houses to find out which category I have, the suspense!

What would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?I’d sing ‘You’re So Vain’ as it’s one of Simon’s favourite songs, whilst wearing a Shamrock and doing a Girls Aloud dance routine – and you wonder why I’m on this side of the desk!

Dannii Minogue’s CV is as long as she is tall (5ft 2in to be exact!). Having a natural affinity with performing, Danielle Jane Minogue has crossed television, stage, theatre and film since the age of seven, performing professionally for over 31 years. Of course, she can now add motherhood to her list of achievements, giving birth to her first child, Ethan Edward, with partner Kris Smith back in July.

In the last 12 months alone Dannii has been named ‘TV Personality of the Year’ and ‘Ultimate TV Personality’. A cover star of Sunday Times’ Style, she has also been crowned one of the world’s most impeccably dressed women by British Vogue, among the best-dressed in the world by readers of UK Glamour and the second most glamorous celeb in the world (beaten only by Victoria Beckham) by Max Factor. Likewise, in February of this year, Dannii was bestowed with the ‘Best TV Star’ accolade at the prestigious Elle Style Awards in London - chosen by readers and presented to her by sister Kylie.

There is no disputing this Australian icon really does have an eye for spotting new talent across the world; with Dannii currently holding judging panel positions on two of the world’s most successful TV shows. In June Dannii completed her fourth series on the smash-hit Australia’s Got Talent, alongside Brian McFadden and Kyle Sandilands. Dannii remained the show’s only original judge and the show topped the ratings for its most successful series ever. Dannii will also return to her judging seat for her fourth series of The X Factor, alongside Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole this October, rejoining from the Judges’ Houses stage.

It was in 2007 that Dannii first decided to flip the coin and step off the stage and into the judge’s chair, launching Australia’s Got Talent. It wasn’t long before Simon Cowell snapped her up to judge and mentor on UK’s The X Factor. Last year’s sixth series went on to become the most successful year ever. With an incredible final audience peaking at 19.2 million viewers, The X Factor maintained its ‘most popular show’ crown and won a National TV Award for ‘Best Entertainment Show’ in January 2010.

Dannii is thrilled to have become part of the Marks and Spencer family – appearing in their TV and print advertising campaigns. Dannii joins one of her idols, Twiggy alongside Lisa Snowdon, Ana Beatriz

Barros and VV Brown. Most recently Dannii has launched her own fashion label - Project D - lovingly co-designed with British talent Tabitha Somerset-Webb. Their world debut capsule collection, inspired by a mutual friendship and love of fashion, is stocked nationwide in Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and selected boutiques. Dannii’s first fragrance, also named Project D, will be in stores in September.

With her background in live family entertainment TV, some of Dannii’s favourite career moments are recently hosting ITV1’s prime-time special Ultimate Movie Toons (2010) presenting The Lion King special for Disney (1995) and hosting the most recent UK Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards (2008). The KCAs received rave reviews and a 60% increase in audience figures. Following the ‘soggy-celebrity-footsteps’ of Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz, Dannii survived and giggled her way through the shower of slime. So impressed was the President of Nickelodeon U.S., Cyma Zarghami, that she requested Dannii lecture with her at a members only event at the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA).

Very few experience the success and longevity in the entertainment industry that Dannii Minogue has. Thirty-one years ago she began her career on the iconic Australian television drama series Skyways and The Sullivan’s, but became a house-hold-name for her role in the most loved prime-time variety show Young Talent Time – the Australian equivalent of Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club. Her popularity, combined with six years of prime time live TV every week, paved the way to a successful solo recording career. Dannii continued to star in Australian network dramas before joining the internationally successful soap opera Home and Away, where she played the rebellious Emma Jackson throughout 1989 and 1990. This was followed by the feature film Secrets (1992) opposite Shine’s Noah Taylor, and UK short film, The Porter (2005) with Max Beesley and Brian Ferry.

Dannii’s theatre and musical credits include her all time favourite movie character ‘Rizzo’ in Australia’s production of Grease - The Arena Spectacular, playing to more than 450,000 in its first season. Next came the role of Lady Macbeth in a special outdoors adaptation of Macbeth for the Edinburgh Festival. Another triumph saw Dannii play leading role ‘Esmeralda’ for five sell-out months in Notre Dame De Paris at London’s prestigious Dominion Theatre. It was here that Dannii picked up the award for ‘Best Stage Performance,’ playing to a 2,000 strong audience, seven times a week.

As one of Australia’s biggest female exports, Dannii is no stranger to the music charts. A million-selling artist, Minogue owns an anthology of 21 smash-hit singles and five studio albums. In 1990 the then pop starlet released her Top 10 debut single Love and Kisses and Top 10 debut album. A string of Top 10 chart hits followed internationally including Jump To The Beat, This Is It, Put The Needle On It, I Begin To Wonder and You Won’t Forget About Me. Dannii proudly holds the music title ‘Queen of the Clubs’ after scoring a record-breaking 11 Number One club hits in the UK; more than any other female artist in the world, ever. This achievement began in 1997 with the Xenomania chart-topper All I Wanna Do. The dance music hits continued when the legendary Pete Tong approached Ms Minogue to record the international hit Who Do You Love Now? in 2001. Madonna then sealed Dannii’s place at the top in 2003 with Don’t Wanna Lose This Groove; a bootleg of Into The Groove and Don’t Wanna Lose This

Feeling. This was the first time Madonna had ever given permission to any artist to use her material. In total, Dannii’s music has earned her more than 200 weeks – virtually four years – on the official UK sales chart.

From cutting individual and iconic sounds for our dance-floors, Dannii sliced up British radio by creating her own music show called Neon Nights for London’s Capital Radio. Her show followed the official chart show and was the first radio show to ever be sold by the Radio network internationally. She expanded her radio skills last year by co-hosting the Kyle & Jackie Breakfast Show for two weeks on Sydney’s top rating breakfast show on 2DayFM.

Outside the world of showbiz, Dannii continues her charity work as ‘Ambassador for Young People’ with the Terrance Higgins Trust; the UK’s leading HIV and AIDS charity. She also accepted Olivia Newton-John’s personal invitation to become an Ambassador for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal. The charity is raising money to replace the old cancer wards of the Austin Hospital in Melbourne with a brand new building to be named the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.

Following Dannii’s appearance on Pier’s Morgan Life Stories, her long awaited debut autobiography ‘My Story’ will be published by Simon and Schuster on Wednesday 29th September. Personal, contemplative and passionate, it marks a brave and exciting phase for both artist and audience.

What do you look for in the contestants? The best people that walk on stage are always the people that know what they want to be and already know what style of music they want, and have an image. That’s always when I know I’ve got something good to work with. All I’m looking for is somebody that is new, that is unique, that is different, that you look at and think, ‘you have got it, you’ve got the X Factor’.

Does it get any easier saying ‘No’ to auditionees? No, it doesn’t get easier. These kids have been preparing and rehearsing at home, and this day is like the biggest day of their lives. It’s horrible. You can see their faces and they’re saying ‘Please’ to you sometimes. I just have to keep telling myself it’s not fair to patronise them, to keep something alive that’s not working. That’s one of the hardest parts actually, because there is always someone there that reminds you that this is their dream and it’s a big deal for them. Those few minutes are massive, and telling them ‘No’ is tough.

Every time you start a new audition, do you always think this could be the place where you might find the winner? You never know where you’re going to find just that one person who could be the potential winner, so it’s always exciting when you start at a new place. Even though sometimes the days are really long and you think there’s just nobody, there’s always that one person who pops out and you think, ‘I’ve found a star today’. And it’s exciting when you start a new day, because you just hope this is the day you find that one person you need.

How have you found siting alongside the guest judges this year? It’s exciting having guest judges, actually more exciting because everybody sees things through fresh eyes and they give you a new buzz. You see new things and it’s just nice to have somebody different on the panel.

And with Dannii being away for auditions, it’s probably nice to still have some fellow females? It’s lovely for me that there are other women on the panel because I couldn’t be sitting between those two miserable so and so’s on my own! I love having other women with us. I don’t think I could cope with three men on the panel. Three male opinions, it would just drive me nuts!

At the London auditions, it was you on your own with Simon and Louis. How was that?I’ll tell you what I have realised more so, is that without a girl - without Dannii or without a girl substitute - it’s actually hard work with those two because once they get on one, or they back each other up, I’ve pretty much had it. I’m in the middle of Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee!

How does it feel to be starting on your fourth series as the host of The X Factor?I’m over the moon. The auditions have been great and I’m loving Boot Camp. It’s my fourth series now so I really feel like I’m part of the team.

How have the guest judges worked out? Do you have a favourite?!Having guest judges has worked really well. Nicole from the Pussy Cat Dolls has just been extraordinary, she finds it almost impossible to say no to anyone, the other day she told someone ‘no, but it’s even better than a yes’. She also keeps getting up and dancing, stopping acts to offer advice like ‘sing like this’ and then she actually sings - she’s got a great voice too.

Which contestants have stood out for you and why? It’s been a great year for bands. JLS were by far the best band we’ve had, but this year the groups have started to do something different. In fact, we owe a lot to Glee as we’re not seeing your typical girl and boy bands this year.

Any memorable moments from the auditions? I don’t want to give too much away. There is an ex husband and wife who did one of my favourite auditions, but that’s all I’m going to say! Oh and a couple of girls that didn’t get on so well, even though they were supposed to be best friends.

What would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?Definitely not Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ – I’ve heard it too many times in auditions!

What is your favourite part of the show – auditions/Judges’ Houses, live shows etc? I love the early stages of auditions and when we kick off the live shows.

Konnie Huq is the new host of The Xtra Factor. Have you enjoyed working with someone new?Konnie’s a brilliant new host, terrific. Obviously, I miss working with Holly though, she feels like a TV sister!

KonnIe huQQ&a

You are the new presenter of The Xtra Factor. Is it a daunting prospect or have you enjoyed the experience?I guess the first day was quite daunting because it’s like moving to a different school where you’re the new girl and everyone knows each other. There are so many people on the team, and after getting introduced to everyone on the first day, you realise the next day you don’t have a clue who anyone is, but then slowly you make friends and a couple of weeks later, it’s like you’ve been there for years. Am totally loving every minute of the experience, it’s such a buzz! The crowds have been great too. On The Xtra Factor, we’re with them most of the day and we have had such a laugh. What was it like travelling the country to attend the auditions? It’s a bit like touring, you’re kind of living out of a suitcase and waking up in hotel rooms thinking where am I today? It’s great for team bonding though because you’re with everyone first thing and last thing! It’s interesting seeing how people are different place to place! Which contestants stood out for you and why? Often the contestants that stand out to me aren’t necessarily the best singers but the quirky ones or the ones that I have a laugh with! I can’t count the number of times we’ve bursts into hysterics while filming just from goofing around.

What is the thing you most enjoy about hosting The Xtra Factor? When I am having a laugh with some good contestants or with the judges it can be such fun! I love it when I meet people in the queue I really gel with and then we have a laugh over something and run with it. The crew often join in too so it ends up being a big group thing. We‘ve had so many jokes and giggles over the course of the auditions, it’s been great! Are you looking forward to getting into the live shows? Yeah, I can’t wait for the live shows! I love live telly, there’s an energy about it that you can’t beat. Having done Blue Peter for so long, I got a bit spoilt with the luxury of live tv so I‘m chuffed that I’ll be a part of the live experience again. Have you agreed with the decisions the judges have made? Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

What is your favourite part of the show – auditions/Judges’ Houses, live shows etc?I can’t really answer that one yet, but I am really looking forward to the live shows as I love live presenting.

In 2007 Konnie Huq saw out her tenth and final year in Blue Peter after becoming their 26th presenter on 1 December 1997. Konnie started her presenting career when she was just 17, fronting a number of children’s programmes on The Children’s Channel including CBBC Channel’s UK Top 40 and GMTV, whilst completing an Economics degree from Cambridge. She also appeared on Newsround as a child, when she interviewed Neil Kinnock before the General Election in 1992.

Konnie’s years on Blue Peter have taken her to the far corners of the world, and among her many Blue Peter highlights are learning to scuba dive; visiting Mozambique to open one of the schools paid for by money raised during the Blue Peter New Future Appeal in 1999; a trip to the village in Bangladesh that her family originate from; and learning how to be a rally driver. In addition to this she has also interviewed Tony Blair and Gordon Brown as well as music and film stars.

Music has been a passion of Konnie’s where she has had the opportunity to present such iconic music shows as Top Of The Pops and The Tube broadcast on Channel 4 Radio . Acting has been another of Konnie’s passions where she trained at the National Youth Music Theatre

along side Jude Law and Jonny Lee Miller. Recent cameos have included a servant (called Konnie) on the last episode of the second series of Robin Hood.

Konnie hosted ‘London Talking’ - a topical debate show transmitting on ITV1 on Thursday evenings - the highlight of the series being Konnie hosting the animated Major debate between Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. Konnie has many feathers to her bow and her versatile presenting style enables her to lend her experience to a wide range of topics, from covering New York and London Fashion Week for LK today to presenting major sporting and fashion programmes over the summer. She has been presenting Zoo Days for Channel 5, jetting around the world as the presenter for the Red Bull Air Race on Channel 4 as well as presenting for GMTV. She presented the prime time series ‘Guinness World Record’s Smashed’ on Sky One and then headed straight to Canada to film Adrenalin Junkie with Jack Osborne for ITV2.

In 2010 Konnie was signed to host ITV2’s coverage of The Xtra Factor and viewers will also see Konnie on ITV1’s new show 71 Degrees North, in which she takes part in a variety of Arctic challenges against other celebrities.

GerI haLLIWeLLQ&a

How did you feel when you were invited to become a judge for The X Factor? I felt really excited. I love the fact it gives everyone a chance to be a star and I absolutely love empowering people. Also, I have history with all three judges. With Cheryl, I picked her for Popstars: The Rivals so I’m really proud of her and just thrilled with her success. Again, the Popstars connection is there with Louis, he’s just like a comfy uncle I’ve bickered with. Then there’s Simon! We have a different kind of history, so it was really nice to have the opportunity to get to know him a little better. I still can’t decide whether I want to slap him or kiss him (don’t tell him I said that!). To their credit, everyone made me welcome and by the end of the day it very much felt like a warm family.

What qualities do you feel you bring to the Judging panel?I made a promise to myself just to be honest and to be of service to the contestants (regardless of what everyone thought of me). I did my best to give constructive feedback and go with my gut instinct. I wanted to share my experience and give direction with compassion. It’s not easy to audition, but equally I wouldn’t want to be dishonest to anyone so I tried to be kind but authentic.

Which of the judges did you find you mostly agreed with?I would say it was an even split. Sometimes I shared a female view point with Cheryl, I can also have a mad cheesy taste which I would say Louis relates to whereas Simon and I had our moments of agreeing which felt good but also moments of disagreeing (we’re either completely opposite or very similar, so I’m confused!) Sometimes though I was out on a limb and I was the only one saying no and I felt like a total bad guy, but equally on occasion I was the only one saying yes. It made me question my own judgment but sometimes it’s just a taste thing.

What do you look for in an audition performance?Raw talent, a sparkle in the eyes, originality. The bottom line is this: I won’t remember what you sang or what you said, but how you made me feel....Ifthat person makes me feel good, if they connect with me AND with the audience then it’s a good audition. I love it when someone surprises me; when I get a preconception of how they look & then suddenly I’m blown away when they start to perform.

Have you had many memorable auditions this year and if so, can you tell us about them?I have to be honest I was impressed with the calibre of the Scottish auditions. There was a lot of young talent. There was a blonde girl aged about 16, she was very raw but when she started to sing she had a Christina Aguilera vibe. She went through so I’m going to be tuning in and will be interested to watch her grow and to see how she would develop with some direction.

What song would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?I wouldn’t do it! You’ve got a better chance seeing Halliwell & Cowell doing a duet! Maybe ‘Especially for you’ by Kylie & Jason.

How do you know when you’ve found the ‘one’?I just get that feeling. It’s a bit like falling in love. It’s not a head choice, it is pure heart.

In your view, what is The X Factor?Being a star is beyond having a great talent...It’s one step further. I believe it’s someone who has a mixture of strength and vulnerability. They communicate with their eyes, the vocal, the smile. I would use Leona Lewis as a prime example. You also need a mix of humility and ego. You can’t manufacture it, you either have it you don’t, it’s that likeability that people just want you to win. Most importantly, if someone has the X Factor you think about them after they’ve left the building.

nataLIe IMBruGLIaQ&a

How did you feel when you were invited to become a judge for The X Factor?I was over the moon about it because I’m a huge fan of the show. Dannii’s a friend of mine so I was happy to step in while she was off having a baby.

What qualities do you feel you bring to the Judging panel? I’ve been on stage since I was 5 years old so even before my music career, I was performing in one way or another. I think that I will be incredibly honest but I’m certainly not going to be mean in how I deliver my answers. It’s important not to break someone’s spirit but there are a lot of people out there who have an unrealistic view of their tallent and it’s important to tell them the truth.

Which of the judges did you find you mostly agreed with?I agreed and disagreed with all of them at one point or another. It’s all down to taste and that’s why there are four judges.

What do you look for in an audition performance?I am looking for something fresh and original, someone who moves me when they sing, and has a star quality as opposed to being just a technically good singer.

Have you had many memorable auditions this year and if so, can you tell us about them? There was a guy who Simon, Louis and Cheryl didn’t want to put through, and I felt strongly they’d made a mistake. I championed him, so they invited him to come back out and eventually put him through. It felt good that I’d been a part of helping get him through to the next round. What song would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?Something current because we’re looking for a pop star to compete in the current market so I’d choose something from one of the artists who are doing well in the charts at the moment.

How do you know when you’ve found the ‘one’?The audience lets you know but you also just feel it, there’s something about them, and the crowd has a massive reaction to them. That’s the most exciting thing about being a judge on the panel.

In your view, what is The X Factor?Somebody that brings the magic – that has an undeniable quality about them. A star quality that you can’t quite describe what it is.

Page 21: The X Factor Press Pack 2010 FINAL

PIXIe LottQ&a

Were you excited about being one of the guest judges?I was very excited. I’d never done anything like this before so I was excited to watch the singers and find some talent – it’s a completely different experience being ‘the other side of the fence’! It is different to what I usually do, I’m used to being on the other side and performing, so to actually be judging other people was a very new experience for me, but I didn’t really feel nervous, I just felt really excited.

What were you hoping to get out of your day in Cardiff?I was just hoping to find someone who really made me feel excited. I love watching people with voices that really make you feel drawn to them. I also loved to see the characters, because I always really enjoy watching the earlier auditions of The X Factor because you do get some individual characters. I wanted to see some young talent, people who have something special, where you can hear some kind of soul in their voice or something different.

What was it like sitting with an audience of thousands behind you?I think having a big audience in the room just adds to the excitement because you get to hear how the audience responds, what the public think, and I think it just creates a better vibe.

A band has never won The X Factor although JLS have done very well. Do you think this could be the year?I think JLS have definitely paved the way with bands because they’re doing really, really well but I also think that we need a male artist, because they’re always my favourites.

Are you a fan of The X Factor?I am, and my favourite part is always the early auditions, when you get to see all the different characters. So many classic moments. I love it!

What do you think you brought to the panel?I think it was great to include guest judges with different opinions and I think, hopefully, I was able to bring something to the table in the fact that I’m actually out there doing the whole artist thing at the moment so I know how it feels to get on a stage and sing to people, to a big crowd. Before that, I went through the whole audition process and I know how scary it can be. I hope I made them feel at ease because I know exactly how it feels. So I definitely empathised with them.

What song would you sing if you were to audition for The X Factor?‘One Moment in Time’ by Whitney Houston

Page 22: The X Factor Press Pack 2010 FINAL

page 22

Katy PerryQ&a

What were you looking for in the contestants? I wanted to find someone that has a spark that is different and unlike anything that is already out there in the industry. The industry is really competitive and so I was looking for someone not only with a voice, but maybe with a distinct voice to them. Just someone that has a curve, the curveball. I can’t wait to see, some kind of diamond in the rough. It would be so fantastic!

What kind of judge will people see you as?I’m definitely not going to be a sugar-coated judge, just because there are people that need advice and they need criticism and sometimes they need to hear the truth. If it’s obviously not going to work out for them, ever, and they haven’t figured that out, they need to aspire to something else. It’s a bit of a hard thing to do, to tell someone that hard truth but hopefully I can say it in a way that isn’t a mean way, but just a helpful way. Because I want people to fulfil their life and their dreams and their goals, but, you know, if you can’t dance, don’t dance! I’ve only been in the industry - in public - for about two or three years but I’ve been working at it for a long time and I can’t wait to spot a star.

What do you think it takes to survive the audition? I think you just have to breathe before you go on to those auditions and realise that we’re just looking for something genuine and real talent. Sometimes people get so dressed up or they get so crazy, and they have all these moves, but you can’t just have all the bells and whistles and not have the actual talent.

You took part in the Dublin auditions, do you think Ireland is well known for its talent?Yes - in general and with Ireland and everywhere else, they have a lot to offer for the music scene. I usually get my music from y’all, first and then I kind of re-introduce it to my friends in the States. So you guys always have a bit of a jump-start.

Were you pleased to be working with the rest of the panel?I love Simon, I’ve met him a few times before on different chat shows and he’s very confident and very sarcastic, which is definitely my cup of tea. I love Cheryl, she’s a fashion inspiration, of course and, I want those dimples, right there. And, Louis, I had never met, but I was excited to meet him in his hometown. I’m just excited to be in that great company.

Did you enjoy being on the panel? I did enjoy being on the panel. Simon just tells you like it is, and he always has some kind of rhyme or riddle, that goes along with it “You sound like blah blah blah”. It’s like you should make t-shirts out of sayings that he says. And Cheryl’s just so sweet and she’s not just a pushover which is good because I think sometimes women, in judging things can be too sweet and it gets annoying. And Louis was just fun, he’s really funny. You can tell what he’s looking for - that’s a boy band.

Do you think you found any talent in Dublin? I think that there is one act in Dublin that can go all the way.

Tell us about your experience of auditioning for a talent show.I got my first break from ‘American Popstars’ which was at the forefront of this whole pop reality phenonmenon. I drove 12 hours to attend my audition, which was held in the nearest city to where I grew up. I grew up in a small town in the States, in Kentucky actually, I didn’t have the means to be able to go out to Hollywood California for someone to discover me. So I found this popstar audtion, and I went to the closest city. I waited till 4 in the morning in a long line of people, and I sang in front of the judges and the rest is history. What people don’t realise, is that even after the opportunity of being on that show I still had to work to continue my career. So it’s like a never ending work but it’s really good and it’s worth it. I just wanted to make sure I put a lot of my heart and thoughts into the auditions, not only as an artist but as someone who has been there and has done it professionally.

What were you looking for in the contestants?Well, because I am a singer first, I was looking for amazing voices. But I think for me what the X Factor is, is the star quality that these artists and performers bring to the stage. Ultimately I just want to be moved, and I want to feel something from them.

As being part of the Pussy Cat Dolls, were you looking out for girl groups?Actually no, because my passion and my love is for music so was looking for the voice. You don’t have to

have the greatest voice ever...you don’t have to try to do too much as long as you have some control and your own quality sound. For me, its if you believe it as a performer, as a singer, if you believe the music and you believe in your singing, then I’m going to believe it.

How did you enjoy your X Factor experience? It’s been amazing; it’s been a really wide ride. I’ve had a lot more fun than I even anticipated. I loved it. I just think the whole thing is quite a phenomenon. I’m definitely an X Factor fan!

How did you find dong the auditions in front of a live audience?I really enjoyed it, there’s a lot of great energy out there. It’s an amazing setup; it’s beyond an audition - it’s like the ultimate audition. I feel like I’m in a constant concert and there’s not only us three judges up there, there are thousands of people behind us, so the good thing is, when I get stuck, the audience has been helping me!

How did you find the Manchester auditions?I was really excited about how great the personalities were; how people were so witty and genuinely happy to be there. A lot of them were a little scared and timid but a lot of them were just really funny. They’re really witty and really on it. I’m so lucky that I got to be a part of the Manchester tour because everybody in Manchester has the biggest hearts. They have great instincts.
