University of
Nevada, Reno message from the president
message from our ltg
Hello Reno! My name
is Erin Szelagowski and I am
your Capital Division Lieu-
tenant Governor for the 2011-
2012 year. Some of you may
not know what that means, so
in short it means I help all the
clubs within the Capital divi-
sion with any problems you
guys might have and I let you
know what is going on in the
district. The district is made
up of California, Nevada, and
Hawaii and we have that split
into 8 divisions. In Capital
division we have UN Reno,
UC Davis, Sacramento State,
TMCC, Sierra College, and
the University of the Pacific.
Some events we have
coming up as a division in-
clude; going to the chocolate
festival in San Francisco and
helping out at the San Francis-
co Zoo, and the last weekend
of September we will be go-
ing over to Sierra College and
helping them plant trees.
Since you won’t see
me as much this as in years
past here are a couple things
you need to know about me: I
graduated from UNR last
year, I am going to UC Davis
for my Masters degree in Fo-
rensic Science, I think choco-
late is a food group, I just re-
cently started reading Janet
Evanovich novels, my favor-
ite movie is Pay it Forward, I
love the song “All Star” by
Smash Mouth, I love to play
almost any sport, and I have
been in Circle K for 5 years
now. If you ever have any
questions about Circle K, or
just in general, feel free to
contact me at szela-
And just remember,
CAPITAL ROCKS!
Hi everybody, my name is Kaci Hartwick and I am the current Circle K President! Usually in these messages, peo-ple share things about them-selves, so here goes- I am a Pre-Nursing major, I was actually born in Kansas, and I love gi-raffes! As you will soon discov-er, Circle K is a great thing to be a part of. I hope you will take advantage of the numerous service events we have, along with our awesome leadership opportunities and fun social events as well. In case you did-n’t know, Circle K is the largest collegiate community service organization in the world! One thing that is so great about Cir-cle K is that anyone and every-
one is welcome to join, and by joining you will have so many great experiences and make countless friends. At this point I would also like to thank the entire Cir-cle K Board for all their hard work thus far (we’ve been at it since April!). Also, thank you to all of our returning members- don’t forget about our Member of the Month program by the way! I am so excited to meet everyone, and I truly hope that you will feel welcome when you come to Circle K. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, (anything!) please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thanks and here’s to a great year!

SACRAMENTO HOMELESS
By Erika Mettke
On June 11, 2011, Univer-sity of Nevada, Reno Circle K and TMCC Circle K went to the Sparks Kiwanis’s grand opening of their new bike shop. Upon arrival, we swept the floor to remove any excess dust and hung up signs to prepare for the big day. After-wards, we hung up balloons (which popped very often) next to the signs outside and out on the bordering fence. Our president, Kaci Hartwick, got interviewed by Channel 2, which was very inter-esting. When the day picked up a bit, Circle K and TMCC were put in charge of games and books. A nun chuck game, jump ropes, a bean bag toss game, and hula hoops were set up for the kids. I
had fun with the hula hoops game, but was surprised by the young girl who could manage 5 hula hoops at once. After a while, we tried to teach our Vice President of Service, Cynthia Uba, how to bike. It was managed success-fully haha. Overall, the event was successful, and the Sparks Kiwanis were excited to have us there. I would real-ly recommend this event for other volunteers since there are bikes that need to be
tested (as long as a helmet is worn).
On May 21, 2011 I had the opportunity to volunteer at Homeless Connect in Sacramento. My job was to assist the home-less to the Housing Stations that was provided for them. It felt good to see many of the homeless get temporary or permanent housing. Many of the homeless walked out of Housing Station with a big smile on their face. I received so many words of appre-ciation that I felt like I was making a huge difference. To me this was one of the most meaningful service projects I have participat-ed in. I felt I was improving so many lives and was able to reach out to the homeless and give them hope.

SERVICE VOLUME III, ISSUE 1
Slf weekend By Christine Bonuel
From June 3 to June 5, 2011, Circle K members from TMCC and from the University of Nevada, Reno attended the Service Leadership Fellowship weekend. It was three fun-filled days of events focused on the three tenants of Circle K. On the first day, we volunteered at the Special Olympics opening cere-mony and had a movie social. The second day, we timed the track & field events for the Spe-cial Olympics Summer Games at Mackay Stadium. Being a “time- stopper” was fun: waiting for the signal to start timing, watching for the exact time the athlete crossed the finish line, and cheer-ing for every single athlete. Two Circle K members, J.O. and Hay-
ley, even assisted a runner during the last lap of his two-mile run! The third day, we received lead-ership training from Lindsey, Carly, and Tom, advisors from the Kiwanis family. We did team-building exercises and brushed up on our knowledge of each board member’s duties. The Ki-wanis advisors also gave us ad-vice on how to deal with conflict within the club. Overall, SLF weekend was a great experience! I had a lot of fun, and it also pre-pared me for my chair position this upcoming year.
Corn dogs By Kaci Hartwick
How can I even begin to describe the Susanville Corndog event? Simply put, it is one of my favorite events, and I am so hap-py that it has become a yearly Circle K tradition. The event be-gins with a one and a half hour drive to Susanville, and from there we meet up at the Lassen County Fair. Once we enter the fair, we find the infamous corn-dog booth, which is run by the Kiwanis Club of Susanville.
The corndog booth is a small white trailer with two large windows and a few Kiwanis signs and logos. While the booth may be modest in appearance, the product that comes out of it cer-tainly is not. They don’t joke around on their sign that says, “World Famous Corndogs”. The-
se dogs are home made, and we got to learn the entire process.
F i r s t , you have to cook the hot dogs and m a k e
sure you stick them just right. After that, they are rolled in some dry batter and then dipped into the secret recipe batter. From there, it’s straight to the fryer, and then the little holders called boats.
As we mastered the cooking technique, we also had to become expert cashiers and soda fillers. Some people would come up to the window and order six corndogs to go, so there was-n’t much time to rest. The night
flew by as we served count l es s people and fried up an insane amount of corndogs.
I love this event because it defi-nitely keeps you on your toes, but I also love how we all worked together as a team. As “corny” as it sounds, you real-ly count on every single person in that tiny trailer to do their job right; other-wise you’re going to run into trouble. Even though it was stressful, it was great to hear the cooks in the back say good job to one another, or “I need five corndogs!” followed by, “Thanks, you’re awesome!” In conclusion, the Susanville Corndog event is definitely an event you cannot miss!

District summer service social (dsss) By Kristen VanCitters, Cynthia Uba, and Christine Bonuel
My favorite part about DSSS was meeting a ton of new Circle
K'ers! We rarely get to see the southern schools at events, pretty
much only at FTC and DCON, so meeting all of them was awesome!
DSSS was filled with opportunity to bond with other members over
service projects, laser tag, workshops, board games, and so much
more. We represented Nevada and Capital well and everyone was
very impressed that we made the trek down to So Cal!
My favorite part of DSSS was all of the social aspects of it.
One day we did a photo scavenger hunt at the Fashion Valley Mall.
My team, „Team Woo!”, won the first part of the challenge, but we
were unable to complete the second part: finding our District Gov.
Brett Butler who was hiding somewhere in the mall. Another one
of my favorite parts? Singing “I‟ll Make a Man out of You” to pass
the time during the service project in the Mission Valley Preserve.
The most shocking thing that happened, though? My ranking 3rd
out of 39 Circle K‟ers in laser tag, haha! It was lots of fun; I‟m
looking forward to our next district event!
We woke up pretty early on Saturday and all headed out
to an awesome service event, where we helped clear the path
leading to a preserve. This event demonstrated how amazing
at teamwork Circle K‟ers can really be. The most memorable
part of this day for me was presenting a workshop; it was
about being healthy and being a hardworking member of Cir-
cle K. It had a great turnout, people loved it! DSSS is one of my
favorite events ever.

Gloria and I share a lot of characteristics, she and I are strong featured

We have a lot of style and pride that sometimes we let them get the best
of us. We like things to go our way and always have a way to manipulate
things to be in our favor. We also have some awesome dance moves that
can literally shake a setting. Most of all, we can have fun regardless of

Well, I am Alex the Lion! While in the movie he's cocky...I'd like to say I'm confident!
Plus-we have the same first name, which just makes things even cooler. He also ends
up liking sushi...which coincidentally my favorite food! But in all seriousness, we
share the same love of our own comfort zones but have the
ability to adapt to whatever is given to us.
