THE PRESIDENT’S KEY NOTES

The time to start our year is exciting! Our theme for the next two years is “Reach for the

stars”. Each member is a star. You have reached out to your community to be part of The

Fuquay-Varina Woman’s Club. Thank you for being a part of a wonderful constellation.

When you think of F-V WC think of STAR. S is for service. From national to state Woman’s

Club, service is the first and primary point of this organization. So service begins our star. T

stands for teaching or training which is often done in our CSP – community service

programs. Our meetings provide programs that will teach and enrich our lives. A stands for

associations. Through our club and our members, we become aware of town and state

organizations and the many talents that each member shares through: Arts, Conservation,

Education, Home Life, International Outreach, and Public Issues. Each star – member - will

radiate the talents of others, helping to build the R of the star- relationships and resources.

The final point of the five-pointed star is the constellation that each member of this club

helps to create. So if we use the S – service lessons, T – teaching & training, A – associations,

R – relationships and resources; our club can continue to build and radiate positive lights. I

look forward to serving you in the wonderful experiences that Fuquay-Varina Woman’s

Club offers. We continue to create our constellation by “Reaching for the stars”.

I thank you for letting me serve you as president. I ask that each of you pray for me to do

this job and to radiate your own star. May God bless our year and constellation.

Patty

Membership - Third Vice-President: Anna Campbell

Welcome back to our first meeting of the year! We are very excited to be welcoming new

members into our organization and providing wonderful membership benefits for all

members.

We will be enjoying a fun bingo game during our social time from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at

our September meeting. This will give us the opportunity to socialize and get to know more

about other members!

Throughout each month our Membership committee will be corresponding with each of

our committees to showcase fun events our members and committees will be participating

in. We encourage each of you to share with us what you enjoy doing most within our local

and surrounding areas, so that we may share this information with our entire membership.

If you are interested in being a member mentor (sharing your club experiences with new

members, being an encourager for new members or simply want to help welcome visitors

at our monthly meetings) please let Anna Campbell know! We are always looking for fun

ways to build relationships while serving!

House & Grounds - Shirley Simmons

Fortune has smiled upon our Clubhouse and we are now in the “black” with rental income. Regular monthly groups are: Library Book Club Scouts, GFWC Junior Woman’s Club, FV Garden Club, and New Harvest Church. The Clubhouse is still available for rent by individuals and groups. Call Dot Mays: 919-552-6434. Most Saturdays, all Sundays, and some Friday’s are already booked. If you are planning an event, let us get it on the calendar as soon as possible. House & Grounds will need to plan a “fall clean up” and will appreciate participation by the membership about the time we have LEAVES to rake and some inside spruce up due.

Arts – CHAIR: Martha Smallwood; co-chair: Donna MacDonald

The Arts CSP Committee is excited about a new season and invites you to "Save the Date." Our local Arts Festival will be held at Windsor Pointe January 14-15. You know what this means! If you haven't started an art project to enter this year, we highly encourage each Clubwoman to consider participating. And don't forget that Clubwomen may perform as well -- there are categories for public speaking and drama. For writers, there's literature, and for photographers, portraits and scenic landscapes. If you have an inquiry, contact Martha at [email protected].

PLEASE NOTE: Updates to State Arts Guidelines have been uploaded on the website.

Conservation – Chair: Bev McDougall & Vickie Cardin

The Conservation CSP met to plan the year ahead. We would like to invite the WC members to a road trip at a future date to see raptors and other rescued wildlife. We will continue to collect can tabs every month and donate to Fuquay-Varina Elementary School. We will also collect plastic grocery bags in November to donate to SPCA. We plan to purchase books for the public library to teach children how to be caretakers of our planet to support GFWC Read Green partnership. Here's to a great year!

Home Life – Chair: Barbara Kennedy & Peggy Reynaud

Committee met and set up projects for the next year. We will start with Bingo on Monday, September 5th at Elderly Home. Committee Members will assist in this event. We will do this on a monthly basis. Please donate any shampoos and soaps to Barb Kennedy to assist in this event and future events with the Elderly Home.

Education – Chair: Dot Mays & Shirley Simmons IF YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO VOLUNTEER AT A LOCAL SCHOOL ONE DAY A WEEK, the Library at Fuquay-Varina Elementary needs people to shelve books, help students with check outs and check ins, and generally assist the librarian. Contact: Sherron Hornaday [email protected] 919-557-2566 ext. 20726. ESO is the GFWC Reading Program to encourage Women to engage a variety of topics. The book club will continue on the 4th Monday nights except for Dec. 26 (vacation). Members are urged to consider participating in this program as a fun, social, and discussion time. We will have a handout for the club women this month to provide details.

International Outreach – Chair: Patty Byrne & Sandy Allen

The emphasis for September is our Shot@Life project. We have two ways for you to

participate.

First, Join Shot@Life today for Race to Erase, Shot@Life’s fall coast-to-coast activation. Starting September 1 through World Polio Day on October 24, 2016, Race to Erase will challenge supporters to stand up to help protect kids from polio and eradicate this debilitating disease by fundraising and advocating to your members of Congress.

What’s Race to Erase? It is a 5K Run or Walk (or any other activity you desire) during the countdown to World Polio Day on October 24, 2016. Starting today, we’re challenging you to be part of our race to erase this disease once and for all.

Second, Walgreens and United Nations Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign have teamed

up since 2013 for Get a Shot. Give a Shot®, a campaign that has helped to provide 15

million lifesaving vaccines to children in developing countries. From September 1,

2016 - August 31, 2017 get your flu shot or any immunization at Walgreens and help

provide a vaccine for a child in need.

UNICEF boxes will be distributed at our September meeting

so you can start collecting your loose change from September through October.

NEWS FROM THE WOMAN’S JUNIOR’S CLUB

Tickets for the 27th annual Charity Ball are on sale. Join us November 18 at Bentwinds

Country Club as we "Party Like Gatsby" and raise money for local projects and causes. The

Ball allows us the financial ability to do things in our community such as donating the ADA

accessible swing at South Park, waterproof wheelchair at the Splash Pad and several

donations to local schools. Tickets are $65 through Oct. 15 and $75 after.

The club recently donated an ADA accessible swing at South Park. We are excited to see this

project come to fruition after saving for it for several years. Thanks to Commissioners

Massengill and Wunsch and Parks and Recreation Director Jonathan Cox for attending the

dedication ceremony.
