Fall General Meeting
The Fall General meeting was held on Thursday, October
18, 2018. There were twenty-five in attendance including
four scholarship recipients and three guests. The guests
enjoyed an excellent dinner from Belleria in Kent.
The scholarship recipients included Cheyenne Oechsle,
Macey Martin, Rachel Cartee, and Haley Corey. Each of the
students provided a brief bio during their introduction.
Denise Beck, Vice President and Program Chair, presented
the “Ghosts of Akron” program. She shared talks about
ghosts along the various locks and canals, as well as stories
from the Akron Civic Theater, Perkins Mansion, and Stan
Hywett.
After the program, members participated in the scheduled
business meeting.
A special thanks to Jane Gwinn for providing the summary
and sharing photos from the program.

A rain-snow mix did not keep the WC Tour Group from
enjoying a visit to the National First Ladies’ Library in
Canton, OH, on November 15. Lunch came first at
Bender’s Tavern, established in 1902 and said to be
Canton’s oldest and finest restaurant. If you like historic
buildings, here’s one for you with its marble and oak-
paneled walls and tin ceilings. Our lunch--good food and
good service.
Then we went to the Library/Museum, a repository for
First Ladies’ materials housed in a restored 1895 bank
building, which is a short walk away. The one-hour self-
guided tour allowed us to view a video about Ohio’s First
Ladies, exhibits with extensive explanations, and a
Christmas tree decorated with miniature First Lady dolls
in period dress.
Our umbrellas saved us as we walked a block for a guid-
ed tour of the Saxton McKinley House, ancestral home of
Ida Saxton McKinley, wife of William McKinley, 25th presi-
dent of the U.S. Our docent told us about the house’s
history and its furnishings, but more importantly, about
the people who lived in it. Despite the weather, it was a
fine outing!

A Note from our UAWC President
I am honored and privileged to be the president of this pres-
tigious organization that has a multitude of opportunities to
grow intellectually and culturally, as well as develop com-
panionship’s lasting a lifetime.
Although I have only been involved in The University of
Akron Women’s Club for 13 years, I treasure the relation-
ships and interactions with people, places, and events...and
I hope to do so for many years to come. This organization
is in its 95 year. May it continue to bring enlightenment.
I ask each of you to consider extending
an offer to invite a colleague or friend to
experience our group, so that we can
grow in numbers, allowing more ladies
to experience these wonderful opportu-
nities...for another 95 years and beyond.
With sincerity,
Carrie Ann Tomko
