AKRON WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

JAMES A. RHODES ARENAJames A. Rhodes Arena provides the Zips with a home-court advantage that rivals any facility in the Mid-American Conference. Also known as Rhodes Arena and the JAR, the facility is home to the women’s volleyball team, as well as the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

During the summer of 2015, the JAR received a new floor design that features a giant Blue and White “Z” at center court, a two-tone “Fear the Roo” kangaroo head under each basket and two shades of wood stain, with a darker shade surrounding the bas-ketball court. Additional features include the words “Akron Zips” along each baseline, as well as GoZips.com by the visitor bench and #ZipsGameday on the sideline near-est the home bench. The privately-funded resurfacing project was completed by The Ohio Floor Company (Shreve, Ohio).

All 5,500 seats in the arena are retractable to facilitate the use of the 18,000-square-foot floor for physical education activities, concerts, conventions and other special events.

Armchair seating is available on the lower level (1,323) and on the west-side upper level (773), while the remaining seats are bleacher style.

The main scoreboard, also called Zips Vision, features four Opto Tech 7.5’ x 10’ LED displays which showcase replays of the action on the floor plus other programming before, during and after the game. Opto Tech is one of the industry leaders in large-scale video displays, whose sports clients include Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks, Ohio State University, the University of Nebraska, and the Georgia Dome, home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

The arena is comprised of two floors. In addition to the court, the first level features locker rooms, a sports medicine and training facility, a ticket office, a fan team shop and meeting rooms.

The ground level is also home to the school’s hall of fame, which features photos and information on each inductee. The second floor offers a jogging track and four special multi-purpose labs – suitable for archery, golf, badminton and dancing.

The 2,600-square-foot Tommy Evans Memorial Lounge, used for pre- and post-game receptions and department functions, is housed on the south end of the second floor.

The 125,538-square-foot building also includes an office wing that houses the bulk of The University’s athletics department staff.

During the summer of 2011, the JAR saw the addition of team lounges for the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as a 1,850-foot weight room. The weight room services the volleyball squad, both basketball programs and the women’s ten-nis team.Improved locker rooms were added to the Rhodes Arena complex in the fall of 1992. The new team facilities were funded through private contributions to the Z-Fund.

Rhodes Arena has played host to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Wine and Gold intrasquad scrimmage in the past, along with the LeBron James Skills Academy (showcase for the nation’s best high school players) and the LeBron James King’s Academy (youth camp). The King James Shooting Stars Classic (AAU tournament) also called James A. Rhodes Arena home at one point.

The volleyball program plays host to a number of camps throughout the summer, including the Zips Volleyball Skills Camp, with instruction focused on the fundamen-tals of all six basic volleyball skills in a structured drill environment. Additional camps include the Competition camp, Advance Camp and Scholastic Prep Camps.

The facility became the new home of The University of Akron’s athletics teams on Dec. 3, 1983. Opened prior to the 1983-84 season, the facility gave the Zips basketball and volleyball teams a modern indoor athletics complex.

Rhodes Arena was the first phase of a three-part $20.5 million project, which includ-ed the $6.5 million Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium, a $2.5 million renovation of Me-morial Hall (demolished in 2010) and completion of the 6,000-square-foot Clifford Skeen Varsity Weight Room, which was located inside Memorial Hall.

Prior to the 2002-03 season, Rhodes Arena received a $1.1 million renovation. The project included the addition of a new playing surface and several fan-based capital improvements.

The first phase of the facelift took place during the summer of 2002 when a new hardwood floor was installed. The cost of the project, which was funded by private donations, was $202,500 and was completed in late August. The new floor replaced a surface that was installed when the facility was built in 1983.

Phase two of the project was one which Zips fans have benefited from most, provid-ing a new state-of-the-art video display and scoreboard system – installed in October 2002.

The Cincinnati Floor Company installed the new floor, which was manufactured by Robbins Sports Surfaces. The company is no stranger to the basketball world, hav-ing installed the floor at Indiana University’s Assembly Hall and Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, home of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

The surface also saw the addition of the school’s new logo and word marks, which were unveiled in July 2002. In fall 2008, new courtside tables with LED display capa-bilities were purchased for the venue. In 2013, a new lighting project was completed inside the arena, as well as the lobby, of Rhodes Arena.

On Aug. 24, 2011, the athletics departments at The University of Akron and Kent State University today an-nounced participation in a new competition, celebrat-ing an intercollegiate athletics rivalry dating back more than a half-century between the two schools. On Sept. 27, 2016, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center became the title sponsor for the 14-sport rival series which is now be called “The Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.”

The Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge is based on a time-honored competition for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded orig-inally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Since the 2011-12 academic year, the rivalry was broadened to include 14 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings.

Fans can learn more about the rivalry and follow the re-sults and standings via

www.WagonWheelChallenge.com.

“Sponsoring the Wagon Wheel Challenge with the University of Akron and Kent State University is a great honor,” said Ronald Suntken, EdD, FACMPE, president and CEO of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center. “We are excited to be a part of this traditional rivalry for the next five years.”

In keeping with tradition, the annual winner of the foot-ball contest will gain possession of the historic wooden Wagon Wheel trophy, while the school that accumulates the most total points in all varsity match-ups for that aca-demic year will receive an overall series trophy.

“We are excited to join the Crystal Clinic and Kent State in our promotion of the Wagon Wheel Challenge once again,” said Larry Williams, Akron Director of Athletics. “We are grateful to Dr. Ray Acus and Dr. Tim Myer, and all of the doctors at the Crystal Clinic who have taken great care of our student-athletes over the years. We are proud to sup-port this historic tradition with our rivals at Kent State.”

According to legend, the “Wagon Wheel” trophy traces its beginnings to the spring of 1870 when Akron industrial-ist John R. Buchtel set out for the town of Kent in search of a site to establish a college. In the muddy Ohio fields, however, his wagon became bogged down in the area

where Kent State University is currently located. When horses pulled the wagon, a wheel came loose and be-came buried until it was discovered in 1902 during the construction of a pipeline along the Western Reserve Trail.

The wheel eventually fell into the possession of Dr. Ray-mond Manchester, who as the Kent State Dean of Men in 1945, suggested the local historic artifact be offered as the trophy to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game.

“We are proud to partner with Crystal Clinic and the Uni-versity of Akron to extend the Wagon Wheel Challenge,” said Joel Nielsen, Kent State Director of Athletics. “The doctors at Crystal Clinic have been assisting our stu-dent-athletes for years; they are a great fit as the title sponsor for a rivalry series that incorporates 14 sports.”

IMG College, the sponsorship and multi-media rights holder for both Akron and Kent State athletics, negotiat-ed The Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic CenterWagon Wheel ChallengeRules & Qualifying Sports

• Each of the 14 sports will be worth one (1) point. For a school to be the winner of The Crystal Clinic Orthopae-dic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge, it must accumulate at least seven-and-a-half (7.5) points.

• The point is awarded to the team that wins the sea-son series in the head-to-head competition.

• If the teams play head-to-head once in a given sea-son (e.g. football), then the school that wins will receive the point.

• All regular-season games count toward the sea-son series tally (including if non-conference games are played) with the school that wins more games (e.g., win-ning two of three in softball) receiving the point. If teams split the regular season match-ups (e.g., in basketball), then each team receives a one-half (½) point for that sport.

• For men’s and women’s cross country, golf and indoor/outdoor track and field, one point is awarded to whichever school finishes higher in the MAC Champion-ship for each of those sports. (For these sports, no other competitions – in-season or post-season – will count to-ward the series).

• MAC and/or NCAA Tournament games can count toward determining the season series winner (e.g., the schools split the two regular season meetings in basket-ball and then meet in the MAC Tournament, whichever school wins that game is awarded the point).

• In the event of a 14-sports season tie, the school that won the trophy the previous year will retain possession.

2016-17 ResultsFor the second consecutive year, Akron won the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge, claiming a 7.5 to 6.5 victory over Kent State. Akron’s football team started the scoring for the Zips on Oct. 1 with a 31-27 victory at Dix Stadium. The football squad earned one point for the win, and women’s volleyball added a half point to the cause on Oct. 28. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each added a point at the MAC Championship meet on Oct. 29 to round out the fall scoring.

The intense Akron-Kent State rivalry came down to the final Mid-American Conference Championship week-end as the Zips men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams claimed the final two points for the Wagon Wheel title win. In addition, it was the seventh outdoor MAC track and field championship for both the men and the women, but first time in program history in which the Zips have swept the men’s and women’s team championships during both the indoor and outdoor campaigns, earn-ing four points towards the rivalry challenge.

Kent State earned points for volleyball (0.5), women’s soccer (1.0), women’s basketball (1.0), men’s basketball (1.0), softball (1.0), women’s golf (1.0), and men’s golf (1.0).

TOM

HANNAHead CoachThird season at Akron12th season overallMarist (1992)

Tom Hanna, who guided Marist to back-to-back regular-season conference championships while earning Conference Coach of the Year honors twice, was named the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Akron on Jan-uary 28, 2015.

The third year coach has a combined (8-41) record leading the Zips n his first two season. In his first season as Akron head coach, Hanna led the squad to a 8-21 overall record and 2-14 mark in the MAC. UA set a school record for aces in a match with 18 against Morehead State on Sept. 18. The team performed off the court as well, with eight Zips chosen as Academic All-MAC honorees and four picked as MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.

Hanna joined the Zips after nine seasons as the head coach at Marist College where he amassed a 139-134 overall record, including an 89-73 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The two-time MAAC Coach of the Year guided his student-athletes to 16 All-MAAC selections, six All-Championship selections, 61 Academic All-MAAC honors, and 10 Academic All-District acco-lades. His squads earned AVCA Team Academic Awards for eight consecutive seasons.

In 2014, Hanna led the Red Foxes to their second consecutive MAAC regu-lar-season title and tournament final appearance. Marist finished at 25-6 over-all and 17-4 in MAAC play, both single-season records for wins in program history. Two players earned first-team All-Conference honors, including Setter of the Year, and seven were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Hanna was named the MAAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

In 2013, Marist shared the regular season MAAC Championship for the first time in program history, finishing 21-9 overall, 14-4 in the conference. The Red Foxes entered the MAAC Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed, and made it to the final round before falling to Fairfield. Hanna reached his 100th career victory on Sept. 22 in the Red Foxes’ 3-0 victory over Iona. He was named the MAAC Coach of the Year, while Brooke Zywick was the MAAC Libero of the Year and Mackenzie Stephens was the MAAC Player of the Year.

In 2011, Marist finished the season at 10-8 in the MAAC, Hanna’s third sea-sonwith a .500 MAAC record or better, and a tie for fourth place. Canisius won the third tie-breaker, by virtue of the point differential in the teams’ two head-to-head meetings in the regular season, and received the final spot in the MAAC Tournament.

In 2009, Hanna coached Marist to its then-best MAAC finish in program histo-ry when they advanced to the conference championship. They defeated Fair-

field in a thrilling five-set match in the MAAC Semifinals. The Red Foxes finished that season at 18-13 overall and 11-7 in the conference.

In Hanna’s tenure at Marist, the Red Foxes have excelled in the classroom. Ten Red Foxes earned CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors. Marist earned AVCA Team Academic Awards every year since 2006, and received NCAA Public Recognition Awards in both 2013 and 2014.

During his time as an undergraduate at Marist, Hanna served as an assistant coach for the Red Foxes, helping direct recruitment strategies for the newly schol-arship-enhanced program. He served as interim head coach from November 1990 to May 1991. In addition to his responsibilities with the varsity women’s team, Hanna also founded and served as head coach for the men’s club team.

Before becoming Marist’s head coach, Hanna served as the assistant men’s coach at Rutgers-Newark, helping his squad to the EIVA Tournament Semifinals in 2000. He has four years of Division I women’s experience as an assistant at Bowling Green, serving as director of recruiting, scouting, film exchange, and camps.

Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the women’s assistant at Ferris State Uni-versity and three years assisting both the men’s and women’s programs at East Stroudsburg State. Hanna spent his second post-graduate season at Alaska-An-chorage, helping the nationally ranked Seawolves to the 1992 Pacific Conference Co-Championship.

On the national level, Hanna worked with the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team in the summers of 1994 and 1995. He completed studies of the team’s play in World League competition that were used to evaluate its performance and assist in the development of its future training and match plans. He has assisted at nu-merous national team program tryouts at various levels, and also assisted in a variety of responsibilities with the USA Volleyball National Team Training Center in San Diego.

Hanna graduated from Marist with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a New York State Coaches Certificate minor in 1991. He continued his education at East Stroudsburg, earning a Masters of Education with a concentration in sports management in 1994.

Hanna and his wife, Kristin, have two children, Caroline and Jillian.

Kacie Ehinger (pronounced en-ger), who worked with Hanna at Marist for three seasons, enters her third season at Akron in 2017. She has more than 13 years of experience in collegiate volleyball. She joined Akron after spending the 2014 season at Lamar University.

Ehinger served as an assistant coach at Marist College for three seasons. While at Marist, she worked specifically with defensive specialists and primary passers. In 2013, she played a major role in the development of MAAC Libero of the Year Brooke Zywick and MAAC Player of the Year Mackenzie Stephens as the Red Foxes went onto claim a share of the con-ference regular-season championship.

Following her playing career, Ehinger accepted an assistant coaching po-sition at Defiance College, where she helped the Lady Jackets to a massive turn around, improving from 6-27 her first season to conference finalists a year later.

After returning to her alma mater for the 2009 season, Ehinger coached for Siena Heights in 2010 before joining the staff at Marist in 2011.

Ehinger worked the Premier Academy for five years as a head coach and an assistant coach.

An Adrian, Mich., native, Ehinger played volleyball at Adrian College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health, physical educa-tion, and recreation in 2006. She was a four-time All-Conference honoree and team captain, earning the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 2003. Ehinger earned a master’s of education from Defiance in 2009..

He also operated as the point per-son for team travel and assisted with team administration.

Last season, Armstrong spent his time as the Volunteer Assistant Coach at the Uni-versity of Kentucky where he assisted in the development and training of setters, middle blockers and opposites. He was also responsible for preparing scouting reports and charting the team’s offense.

During his tenure at these universities, Armstrong coached a total of four AVCA All- American Honorable Mention Selections. Prior to UK and IPFW, Armstrong served as a coach with Lakeside Volleyball Club in Burnt Hills, NY in 2012. He became an IMPACT Certified Coach by USA Volleyball in 2011 while also becoming a USA Volleyball Certified Official in 2011.

He has served as a camp counselor at the Union College Volleyball Camp (2011-14) and at the University of Kentucky Volleyball Camp (2015), as well as being the camp director for high school team camps back in his home state of New York.

A four-year letterwinner for Indiana University - Purdue University, Fort Wayne (IPFW), playing for AVCA Hall of Fame Coach Arnie Ball, Armstrong set a career-high with 59 assists and five digs at Belmont Abbey as a senior. As a setter for the Mast-odons, Armstrong was on a team that ranked as high as No. 9 in the AVCA rankings and was a four-year MIVA Academic All-Conference selection.

In addition to competing on the varsity volleyball team at IPFW, Armstrong served as an assistant to the Assistant Athletic Director for Outdoor Events and Equipment from 2012-15. He helped maintain and organize team equipment and assisted in the game day operations for outdoor events. His experience in event management also allowed him to serve as an intern during Conference Championship events including the 2013 Summit League Track and Field Championships and the 2013 Summit League Women’s Soccer Championship.
