As the weeks fly by I can't help but feelsuper  optimistic  about  InAkron.  Notonly do  I work with a great group ofpeople who put a lot of effort into thismagazine,  but  from  the  amazing  re-sponse it is getting from readers. I can'ttell you the feedback via e-mail or my-space  that  we  have  received,  alongwith the unfathomed support from busi-ness owners who make our magazinepossible.  I'd like to thank a close friendof mine, Preston Holmes, for being a

rock of support and thoughtfulness (and for writing a damn col-umn every week).  Oh yeah, did I mention he also gives the bestblow-dry this side of Toledo and forever will be my stylist, andbff.  Kisses bitch!

Anywho, this past week I have tirelessly walked, in fourinch heels, (now when I say walked, I mean from the car to thefront door)  into bars, restaurants and diners, bowling alleys, youname it… to work on finding great entertainment  for you, thereaders.  I met David, the owner of The Nut House, and talked alittle bit about their amazing special. Free f-ing food!! That's everynight too! I will definitely be there.  I also met Charlie, an ownerof The Getaway Pub in the valley. I'll be hitting up the Getawaytoo, for all of their live music and all day happy hour until 7pm.

Moving forward to look at the future of the magazine Iam going to be adding more interesting editorials hopefully frommany people with different views on things then mine.  Let's faceit not everyone thinks like I do about the entertainment through-out Akron, and I'd like to hear all opinions.  I am interviewingsome  writers  as  we  speak  so  look  for  more  articles  soon.Peace Bitches.

Even given our nations high unemployment  rate, supris-ingly we still have office parties to go to. I'm going to showyou how to have fun, and look fabulous, while maintainingthe little dignity you're hanging onto this holiday season.Most of you don't know how to handle yourselves at a zoo,let alone  in an enviroment with drinks, dancing, and col-leages. Here are my tried and true tips for surviving an of-fice party.

Now  is your chance  to show your personal stylewhile still being appropriate. Girls listen up, no stripper orhoe  gear,  save  that  for  your weekend  job  ladies! Makesure the girls are covered, although some cleavage is ok,remember we are here to turn heads, not tricks. Remem-ber no pantyhose with open toes shoes, save that for yourfamily reunion at the trailer park. Skirts above the kneeswill  require  you  to wear underwear. No  reinactments ofBritney and Paris please. Now is a great  time to  let yourhair down. Change it from that 9-5 skintight poney tail thatyou've been sporting all  year. Maybe now  they can seeyour real hair color. I suggest you schedule that $20 blowout that we've been talking about with your favorite hair-stylist  to  the stars. Here  is my number 330.835.4510.  Itonly takes about 30 minutes to have yourself party readyand  confident.  Most  office  parties  are  after  5pm,  so  amakeup touch-up is required. That means a fresh coat ofmascara or at least combing out those taranchula lashes.Also make  sure  you  clean up  that  oil  spill  that  occuredsometime between breakfast and now with a fresh sweepof your favorite  pressed powder. Don't  just reapply yourlips, start fresh. Although I'm sure your $2.00 lipstick hasheld  its own all day, don't  forget  to use your  favorite   50cent lip liner as well to finish off your perfect look so youdont  look  like  you  just  stumbled  off  the  set  of“DeepThroat” the sequal!

Hey boys!  You've probably been behind your deskall day so wrinkles will be obvious. Keep a clean shirt andfresh pants  in your car  the day of  the party. Now  is your

chance to let that inner frat boy out to play, but make sureyou keep your mind in reality... we are not in college any-more. So here are my tips  for you  to  look your best withthe least effort possible.

Don't wait  till  the day of  to get your haircut. Thisisn't  picture  day  at  high  school.  You  dont  want  to  lookscalped, so allow a day or two of growth. By now most ofyou  should've  hit  puberty  and  have  some  sort  of  facialhair, so a 5 o'clock shadow will occur. Make sure to get afresh shave in the morning and bring the tools needed toclean up  rough  trade stubble. Most offices have a bath-room with a sink and water so use  them! Hopefully youshowered  the morning of,  but  you may have  to  reapplyyour deoderant and cologne. Remember, a  little goes along way with  the cologne, no one will enjoy gagging onyour Axe spray. Also, be sure  to clean under your  fingernails. You're an office assistant not an auto mechanic orfarm hand.

We are here to have fun and celebrate, not pickupfrom the secretary pool! Office romances are alright, butnot office HOE-mances, so play it smart, if she works withyou.... dont try and work on her, if you know what I mean.

For the last and best tip...alcohol is not your friend.DO NOT get all wasted and puke at your holiday party. Tomany times you have office ”rumors” floating around, butfor it to be true is another thing entirely. Keep it to two andat  least  you  can participate  in  talking about  the personwho downed a bottle of Jim Beam,  instead of being  thatperson.

Listen to my few simple rules and you wont be thelaughing  stock  of  your  office.  Keepreading  for  more  great  tips  and  re-member... my number is 330-835-4510!

TECH TALK

Rember when your computer ran as fast as the day youbought it? Most people run thier computers into the ground within3 months of normal use. This isn’t really thier fault. The advancesin the technology field of software are constantly demanding big-ger proccessors, more memory, and a larger harddrive. If youdont want to have to upgrade your system every few months, orbuy a new one read these few tips below.

1. Run MSconfig. To do this, select Start>Run and type msconfiginto the space. Select the Startup tab and get rid of all unneces-sary programs. The way to determine this is to go to ProcessLi-brary.com and check it against their database.

2.Stop  using  Internet  Expolorer.  Install  Firefox  by  going  towww.GetFireFox.com. After installing Firefox, type about:configin the address bar. Right click in the window and click New andInteger. In the first box, type privacy.popups.disable_from_plug-ins. In the second box, type 2. This will prevent Flash popups.

3. This is where it gets a little crazy. Open Regedit by clickingStart>Run and type in regedit. Once Regedit is open, click theplus symbol next  to  the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder,  theplus symbol next to Control Panel, and then click the Desktopfolder icon to display its contents. In the right pane, double-clickMenuShowDelay to change its value. (This Registry location isreferred to as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL\PANEL\DESKTOP\MENUSHOWDELAY.) The default Value Data is 400,or 4/10 of a second. Change the Value Data to 0 for the leastdelay, and click OK. This will make menus appear instantly onyour computer instead of having a delay.

4.    Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER,  expand Control Panel,and click Desktop. Double-click the AutoEndTasks string andchange the value to 1. This causes all of the components of theexplorer to run in one process, making your computer faster.

5. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER,  expand Control Panel,click Desktop, and double-click the MenuShowDelay string in theright-hand pane. Change the value to 100. This will cause Desk-top menus to appear almost instantly.

6. Defrag at all costs: Run a defragmenter application regularly.Data in a hard disk is not necessarily stored in a contiguous man-ner. This means that when your hard disks read data, it has tojump from platter to platter, sector to sector just to get a file in itsentirety. As a result of this effort, your computer could experiencefaster disk reads and an improvement in computer speeds from30% up to 100%.

If you use all the tweaks above and are still unhappy with thespeed that your computer is preforming at, you can call CertifiedNerds (see thier ad to the right). They are located in the Merri-man Valley and have the most competitive rates out of any com-puter “fix it” store IN Akron.

DRINKING GAME: FLIP CUP

The Game of Flip CupWhen keg stands aren’t an option...Two teams race to consumetheir drinks the fastest.

You will need One plastic16 oz. cup per player, Largetable everyone can stand at,beer  or  mixed  drink  ofchoice.

Players are divided  intotwo  even  numbered  teamsand stand on opposite sidesof a table. The 1st racers areat the front of the table facingeach other, 2nd racers nextto them, 3rd racers next themetc, and the last players areknown as the "anchors".

Once everyone is seatedwith their drink the judge will start the race with "Drinkers ready!3-2-1 Drink!"  When the race has begun, the first racer on eachteam begins to drink his or her beer. When the first racer hascompletely finished his or her beer, the cup is placed right-sideup at the edge of the table, and the person who drank it tries toflip it upside down onto the table using one hand (meaning thelip of the cup would be on the table). If he or she is not successfulon the first try, the cup must be reset and re-flipped.  If two handsare used the flip is not counted and the cup must be reset rightside up.   Only after the first teammate has successfully flippedtheir cup upside down, can the next person proceed. Whicheverteam finishes drinking and flipping all its cups first is the winner.If the last two players' cups hit the table at the same time the firstcup that comes to rest is the winner.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK

Ryan HumbertAmazing Raw Local Talent

Since 2004,  pop/rock  singer-songwriter Ryan Humberthas been wowing audiences all over Northeastern Ohio. Play-ing over 400 shows, he has opened for Chrissie Hynde, ElvisCostello, The Gin Blossoms, Foreigner,  and more.

Humbert is never one to shy away from showing his ver-satility as an artist and performer. In 2006 Ryan and his bandhad the honor of playing for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame'sAmerican Music Masters Series in honor of Roy Orbison. Theywere the only band from N.E. Ohio asked to participate, per-forming a 12-song "Roy" set. More recently, Ryan was the fea-tured artist at the ribbon cutting ceremony of VegiTerrenean,the Akron restaurant of Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde.In  September  of  2007, Ryan  portrayed Hank Williams  in  athree-night run of the Canton Cabarets "Hank Williams: TheConcert That Never Was" performing 22 Hank Williams songs.Demand for the sold-out performances was overwhelming andtwo more encore performances were added.

In 2005 The Canton Repository called Humbert's debut self-released record "Nothing to Lose" one of the Essential CDs ofthe year. Humbert has also been nominated for numerous awards, including The Cleveland Scene Music Awards, Cleveland FreeTimes Music Awards, and The Akron Area Arts Alliance Rising Star Award.

In the Spring of 2008, Humbert moved to Nashville, TN to record a pop/rock record with producer Lij (The Living Things, TheSpinto Band, Jill Sobule). The resulting 14-song album,"Old Souls, New Shoes", features Humbert's bandmates Emily Bates andBen Evans as well as former members of Third Eye Blind, The Jayhawks, The Counting Crows, The Black Crowes and more.

Everything about Ryan appeals to numerous demographics of eager listeners. There is not one song on his new CD thatleaves you wanting more. Of course, my favorite song "Keeps Me Coming Back for More" he played Nov. 14th on WKYC channel 3to an overwhelming positive response. Looking at Ryan he has everything needed to be an amazing singer/songwriter, as well asbeing super good-looking. :)  There is nothing cocky or fake about Ryan, he's a great guy who embodies the American dream hadby so many to be great at their craft, and he is.

You can go to his website www.ryanhumbert.com to listen to his new CD as well as his old ones, and to find out where youcan purchase "Old Souls, New Shoes".  You can also look up his upcoming show schedule and see pictures from his concerts. Don'tforget to sign up to be a part of his fanclub. This next show at Musica in Akron not only is a full band show, but also is a party forRyans birthday! I encourage you to go to the show. If you have ever wanted to see a real, up and coming star, this is your chance. Iknow I'll be there.
